Lahore, 9 December 2020:

Pakistan Cricket Board today announced details of the South Africa men’s cricket team’s first tour to Pakistan in 14 years. The tour will comprise two ICC World Test Championship fixtures and three Twenty20 Internationals.

South Africa will arrive in Karachi on 16 January and will play the first Test at the National Stadium in Karachi from 26-30 January. They will then travel to Rawalpindi where the second Test will be held from 4-8 February. The iconic Gaddafi Stadium, headquarters of Pakistan cricket, will be the venue of the three T20Is, which are scheduled for 11, 13, and 14 February.

Upon arrival in Karachi and in the lead up to the first Test, South Africa will observe an isolation period following which they will hold training sessions and play intra-squad practice matches.

This will be South Africa’s first visit to Pakistan since the 2007 tour when they won the Karachi Test by 160 runs to clinch the series 1-0. The subsequent series in 2010 and 2013 were played in the United Arab Emirates.

Since 1995, the two sides have played 11 Test series with South Africa winning seven and Pakistan one in 2003. In this background, Babar Azam’s side will be determined to end the 18-year series win drought and move up in the ICC World Test Championship ladder.

Separately, South Africa is ranked sixth in the ICC Test team rankings, while Pakistan is seventh.

As for the T20Is, this will be the first time the two sides will go head to head in Pakistan, having previously played the two series in the United Arab Emirates. South Africa won both the series.

PCB Director – International, Zakir Khan: “South Africa confirming a tour to Pakistan and playing matches at the three major centers is fabulous news for Pakistan cricket and its fans. South Africa is one of the most popular sides in Pakistan even though they last played here in 2007, but the fans have been following their performances closely and now look forward to welcoming them.

“Cricket South Africa and its players have a special bonding with Pakistan as a number of their star players visited Lahore with the ICC World XI in 2017 and have appeared in the HBL Pakistan Super League with Faf du Plessis being the latest addition after featuring in the playoffs in Karachi.

“2021 promises to be a bumper and most exciting year for Pakistan cricket fans after a very long time. After South Africa, we are scheduled to host New Zealand, England, and the West Indies, while our away series are against South Africa, Zimbabwe, England, Afghanistan, and the West Indies.

“If these high-profile and exciting series are topped up with the Asia Cup 2021 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, Pakistan cricket fans can brace themselves for an exciting and action-packed year.

“The home series against South Africa will complete the process for full resumption and restoration of international cricket in Pakistan, which started in 2015. However, the process got the real shot in the arm in the 2019-20 season when Pakistan hosted Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Marylebone Cricket Club as well as the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020.

“2020 has been a challenging year for the world sport, but the PCB has approached the season proactively and strategically while looking at the future. Consequently, we have been able to successfully deliver nearly 60 percent of matches in the 2020-21 season, including an international series against Zimbabwe, who returned home extremely happy and satisfied with the operational and logistical arrangements we had put in place.

“As has been the case in the ongoing season, we will leave no stone unturned in the health and safety of South Africa and Pakistan sides so that players from both sides can play their best cricket in the Test and T20I series, and entertain the fans across the globe with their skills.”

CSA Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith said: “It’s pleasing to see so many countries making a return to Pakistan – a proud, cricket-loving nation. Cricket South Africa is delighted to be counted among them.

“As someone who has toured the country on more than one occasion back in my playing days, I know how much passion the people of Pakistan have for the game as well as the love and support that the Proteas enjoy there as a team.

“I would like to thank the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the hospitality and transparency they showed our security contingent when they traveled over there a few weeks ago.

“The report on their findings and recommendations gives us confidence as an organization that all of our team’s security, playing, and accommodation needs will be met and that the wellbeing of the team will be the top priority. We look forward to embarking on this historical tour.”

Pakistan captain Babar Azam said: “I am delighted that South Africa have confirmed their tour to Pakistan and look forward to captaining my country for the first time in a home Test at a venue where we recently won our maiden HBL Pakistan Super League title.

“Looking at the calendar of international cricket in 2021, I am pleased we are playing more against the sides which are ranked above us. This is critical to not only our learning and development but also an opportunity to improve our rankings across all formats.

“With the amount of cricket that is lined up in 2021, I am excited that a number of promising and budding cricketers will get chances to break into the national side and cement their places. This is critical to Pakistan’s future in developing a strong and formidable nucleus of players who can step up and challenge any opposition anywhere in the world.”

Tour itinerary

Huge news for everyone. Fans, board members and obviously players. Congratulations to everyone. The return of elite test cricket. A quality side in South Africa. Pakistan will play 4 tests in the space of 1 month. That is shocking lol.

Tests and LOIs on the one trip. A full tour at last. It's coming home :root

Hope the COVID situation in Pakistan is kept in check and we don't have a disaster like South Africa themselves did.

This really is a massive news.

Lahore should have given 1 test the PCB headquarters haven't hosted a test match since 2009, bad idea to give pindi test match it might get affected by the rain.

I don't think Lahore can host a Test match in Januray. The weather won't allow it. Hopefully we can get some Test Matches scheduled in the Apirl-June window so Lahore can get its first test Match in a long time.

Lahore has had terrible pitches in the recent past, while Multan and Pindi have had great ones.
They really need to overhaul it and it is good that there is no test natch being played there.

Yeah I know but hosting a test in pindi in winters not a good idea first of all weather can interfere plus ground conditions especially the grass will look so bad during the winter season. Maybe they can arrange a test at multan if they can reach at some sort of stupid city govt who demanded 20 crore pkr for hosting 3 odi's.

Alhamdolillah

Now I hope to see Rabada, Nortje, DeQock, Van der Dussan, Miller, Faf and other big names of SA on this tour.

2 Tests, this is massive!

Really hope Junior Dala tours for the T20s, he could be an icon in Pakistan!

Great News!!!!

Hopefully its a full strength squad.

And someone please tell PCB to make good pitches.

It will be a wonderful series.

PCB should also arrange a tour game for SA in which top performers from QEA trophy& emerging youngsters can play although because of COVID-19 that is impossible.

This is really an awesome news. very excited for this one.I hope big names like kagiso rabada, faf,Quinton and other come here.It should be an exciting tour.

Great news

Not sure a good idea to have a test in Rawalpindi against Rabada and co.

Pak should prepare spinning (dust bowls) pitches and go with this line up

You need at least 3 spinners (all different types)

Imam(Abid will lose his place after NZ tour)
Azhar
Babar *
Haris
Rizwan +
A Salman(In excellent batting form, off-spinner)
Z Mehmood

A Shaifque (In for Abid)
S Shakeel (In for Fawad)
S Ahmed
S Khan (Shadab)
S Khan (off spinner)

This will be the 18 member squad (due to COVID)

I dont want us to prepare spin tracks. The pitches should be good and sporting. I dont care if we lose, provided that we get to see a high quality of cricket.

I also hope the Pindi test is better organised with start times and whatnot and we don't have a repeat of the bad light issues that were encountered in the Sri Lanka test a year ago.

Excellent news! I hope the pitches are prepared well for an exciting series.

Mubarikan every one this is huge and great news. Alhamdulillah COVID should not be an issue as vaccines etc are out now as well. Just hope everything goes smoothly.

If there are left handers in South Africa, then Sajid Khan(off spinner) comes in place of Nauman Ali as a second genuine spinner, and M Nawaz(who’s in great batting form, and can play a third spinner) comes in place of Agha Salman at #7

That will really be a breakthrough tour if it happens well.

Imagine ABDV also coming out of retirement to play T20I's

Will be like Wrestlemania 30! The rock of international cricket making a return to the grandest stage of them all!

excellent news

Just wish there were at least three test matches.
I was thinking the same. I really have enough of these two test match series we play but then I am ready to take it for another 2 years for Pakistan to become a regular host.

Great news. If the series can go through with no issues , it should encourage other bigger nations to tour.

Is there confirmation of no crowd?

no confirmation yet. If Covid is manageable by then they may allow a limited number of people. I hope we can have a tour with crowds by the time England and Aus tour in the next few years.

InshaAllah Pakistan will get a decent crowd in. The seats are usually 30-40% occupied anyways during non covid days. They can spread that group out.

Good news.
But I am not sure if hosting a test in Rawalpindi against South Africa is a very good idea. That wicket normally supports fast bowlers and South Africa is ahead of Pakistan in that department.
I am afraid Rabada & co. may destroy our batting lineup.

There should be no crowd, technically. But, may be families of players can be allowed for T20Is just to give the feeling of the crowd.

There will be 40+ members in Pak squad (players and management). If each person has ~5 members in his family, then it’ll be 200+ members.

So, I think about a crowd of 200 people(families of players and management) can be allowed. They should be well spread and players should not be allowed to meet their families.

Also, the good thing is the distance between the seats and the actual ground in Lahore is really huge.

Pakistan has decent pace bowlers as well, that should make for a competitive series which I would far prefer to dull cricket matches where both teams end up grinding out scores on lifeless wickets.

yah multan would have been a better choice , wonderful stadium as well. But i think the concern is of international standard accomodation near the stadium and thats available in khi and islamabad.

As for lahore , the smog is a big concern.

Our whole domestic is going on in khi

I think Wasim Khan did give indication of more 3 test series going forward but, I guess schedule is already created in advance to an extent so not much changes could have been made.

Brilliant news. Congratulations to all Pak fans.

If I remember correctly, many SAF players played in that world XI team that visited Pak a few years ago. Maybe that played a big role in this.

This is amazing!

Now I am just waiting for the wrist slitters and naysayers to come and tell us how doomed we are and we don’t deserve to be optimistic about cricket in Pakistan

On a side note, why is no team playing ODIs these days? Almost every tour I see these days is 2 Tests and 3 T20Is.

I understand there is a T20 world cup coming up but that doesn't mean you stop playing ODIs altogether.

Faf, Amla, Tahir, Morkel. The former 3 have all visited Pakistan as part of the PSL as well.

Surprised Morkel has not played any PSL, when he had no issues in visiting the country. Has not made himself available in drafts or what?

I agree, it seems to be overdoing of T20s. However, with ICC world cup super league every team will play same number of ODI matches and that is 12 home matches and 12 away matches in the period of Jul 2020 to Mar 2022, total of 8 ODI series.

Some series were postponed and rescheduled due to pandemic but target would be to complete 8 ODI series by Mar 2022.

Morkel since retirement hasnt played much in T20 leagues other the BBL and MSL, maybe he wanted to give his young family more time. Morkel has now become PR of Australia and will be representing Brisbane Heat in the coming BBL season. Not sure if he will make himself available for other leagues yet but, he will be back on the field again.

Fantastic development. We need to have regular cricket in Pakistan.

Credit to Shahryar Khan and Najam Sethi for laying the foundation from 2015 to 2018 and doing all the the hard work. This is a triumph for them.

Genuinely happy for Pakistani fans. Hope the cricket is awesome.

Credit to the pliopithecus, our distant evolutionary relative for laying the foundation 10-15 million years ago and allowing us to play cricket. This is a triumph for them. :14:

Wasim Khan has repeatedly shown why he has been brought in from England. The likes of Sethi were literally draining us out by offering each player $25,000 for visit to Pakistan.

What a win for Pakistan cricket, regardless of the actual cricketing results. Cannot wait for this.

MashaAllah, the British Pakistani import has done in 2-3 years what useless uncles in Pakistan couldn't do due to a lack of professionalism and class.

May Allah grant PCB more servants who are as professional as Wasim Khan! Warwick Business School Grad leading the way! This is called competency. Excellent appointment sir Imran Khan, a man who was a champion in his time as a cricketer and is now a champion off the field as well.

One of those rare events when Pakistanis/Indians/BDeshis/Afghans etc. all of them are happy.

Of course, the haters are humiliated

:yk

PCB wouldn’t be in this position today if Sethi wasn’t paying money for players to tour Pakistan.

Respect the persistence of Shahryar and Sethi. It was a lot harder to bring teams to Pakistan in 2015-18 than it is today.

With each year we made progress. Mani and Wasim today are capitalizing on their hard work by finding themselves in the right place at the right time.

Wow. Congrats to Pakistani fans. You guys have showed a lot of patience. Your players deserve to play at home against big teams and improve. :inti

Amazing that Babar's first home Test as captain will actually be a home Test

Start of a new era iA

I believe Azhar Ali's first home test as captain was also a home test as Shafiq took over captaincy when Sarfraz had to miss a game

You might be out of touch from Domestic cricket because Pakistan is terrible against spin and we don't have any big turners, to begin with. Dust bowls is not a Pakistani thing. We need decent Batting tracks with enough grass cover to let the ball grip the surface and extract a bit of Seam and Spin

Please show some class. Not everything you say has to be a bait.

To the english for bringing cricket in south Asia!

Please show some class. Not everything you say has to be a bait.

The only people who need to show class are the ones mocking Sethi for paying players money.

They don’t understand how hard it was to convince teams at the time.

Whether they accept it or not, the reality is that Wasim and Mani wouldn’t be able to convince big teams to tour in 2020 if it wasn’t for the efforts of Sethi and Shahryar.

Oh god here we go again. You’re goona be saying the same thing in 2030.. with this logic nobody should get any credit for anything except for Jinnah who laid the foundation for Pakistan!

I think, it’s a great day for PAK cricket and credit should go to everyone in the journey in last few years. Surely SAF isn’t coming after few months effort of current regime - the redemption started long back, probably even before Sethi, but he was instrumental in putting the efforts together towards a functional result.

Hope full SAF team comes and goes back without any incident.

Congratulations to Pakistan. Make sure it is a grand success.
