Linde called up for Proteas ODI series in India

Monday, 02 March

Left-arm spinner, George Linde has received his maiden call-up into the Standard Bank Proteas’ One-Day International (ODI) team ahead of their short outbound tour to India from 12-17 March 2020. It will consist of a three-match ODI series taking place in Dharamsala, Lucknow and Kolkata.

The 15-man squad also sees the return of rested players, Faf du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen to bolster the batting line-up as well as the retention of newcomer, Kyle Verreynne who impressed selectors with his score of 48 off 64 on debut against Australia in Paarl on Saturday (29 February). Keshav Maharaj and Lutho Sipamla are also among the retained players, the latter having the added excitement of a maiden outbound international tour.

The selections are a continuation of Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) search for the next generation of Proteas who will potentially represent the country in the 2023 ICC World Cup in India as well as an extension of the organization’s bid to give opportunities to young, up and coming players who have been making waves in the franchise system. It is also a good opportunity for the players selected to put their hands up and show what they are capable of in the tough playing conditions of India.

Tabraiz Shamsi was not available for selection as he and his wife Khadija are anticipating the imminent birth of their first-born child.

The full squad is as follows:

Quinton de Kock (captain, wicketkeeper, Momentum Multiply Titans), Temba Bavuma (Imperial Lions), Rassie van der Dussen (Imperial Lions), Faf du Plessis (Momentum Multiply Titans), Kyle Verreynne (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Heinrich Klaasen (Momentum Multiply Titans), David Miller (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Jon-Jon Smuts (Warriors), Andile Phehlukwayo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Lundi Ngidi (Momentum Multiply Titans), Lutho Sipamla (Warriors), Beuran Hendricks (Imperial Lions), Anrich Nortje (Warriors), George Linde (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Keshav Maharaj (Hollywoodbets Dolphins).

CSA Independent Selector, Linda Zondi expressed the Selection Panel’s pleasure at their chosen team as they continue the team’s rebuild after the losses of several senior players over the last 18 months.

“It is exciting to see the amount of competition for spots that we have within the team and in the franchises, it’s a good headache for us as selectors to have,” he commented. “We are satisfied with our picks for what will certainly be a challenging tour of India. We saw some promising performances last year from the T20 squad that travelled there and we wanted to give a player like George Linde another crack at the conditions which seemed to really suit him

“We are also particularly pleased with the balance of youth and experience that we have achieved while our young leadership group continues to establish itself. We are looking forward to some good performances in this relatively short tour,” Zondi concluded.

CSA statement on the Proteas men’s tour to India

Friday, 06 March 2020

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is fully conscious of the risks presented in regard to the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and has engaged in a formal risk assessment process to ensure the health and safety of and duty of care to our players and staff. This risk assessment is informed by information provided by international experts, the US Centre for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organisation (WHO), the South African Department of Health and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD). We have also been liaising with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the South African embassy in India and Indian security and risk experts. The government of India has also provided the necessary assurances.

The Standard Bank Proteas will be traveling to India via Dubai and landing and spending a day in Delhi, then proceeding to play in Dharamshala, Lucknow and Kolkata. None of the playing venues have recorded positive cases and travel between these cities will be via chartered flights reducing the risk even further. The risks in Dubai and Delhi are considered low.

While the risk remains low, precautionary measures are necessary because of the highly infectious nature of the disease. The team has been appraised of hygiene precautions, avoidance measures, and symptom recognition in addition to being provided with travel kits.

CSA Chief Medical Officer, Dr Shuaib Manjra will be traveling with the team as Team Doctor and will keep abreast of developments in India and worldwide and advise CSA and team management accordingly.

pointless odi again. if there is no wc around then stop this rubbish bilaterals. just play t20 games as we have a t20 wc around and focus on test matches.

I don't care if we win or lose this series.

atleast for heaven sake play some youngsters.

Malan is selected. Common sense prevails. Don't expect South Africa to win the series but need to ensure they are competitive and run India close.

I think SA will win the series especially after drawing the t20 series in india last time and now whitewashed the Australians so they will be high on confidence, And also some indian players are out of form and some are injured and some will be rested. 3-0 or 2-1 to South Africa.

South Africa are weak against spin, Jadeja and the other spinner will run through the entire line up. 3 nil India

South Africa definitely have a chance. But I think India are favourites as they are at home.

Poor squad selected by India .No youngsters.Only Shaw to replace injured Rohit

They were backups for Pandya and Bhuvi anyway.

But this series should have been used to test bench strength.Doesnt really matter even if we lose 3-0

But for kohli & shastri It's bilateral series that are very very important!! They can test their bench strength in worldcup matches...

Good team selections.

South Africa are regrouping and should be an exciting series . Liking the new look SA team under DeCock. Should compete very well

All-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to play his first ODI in nearly seven months as he is among the 15 players named for the three-match series against South Africa.

Pandya's last ODI for India was the team's 18-run run semi-final loss to New Zealand in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019. Since then he has struggled with a lower-back injury and even undergone surgery, but is now ready to return to the setup.

He proved his fitness and match-readiness in a local T20 competition in Mumbai, making scores of 46, 105, 38 and 158*. He has also bowled in those games and looks set to contribute in full capacity during the series against South Africa, which starts on March 12 in Dharamsala.

Also returning to the squad are Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shubhman Gill. Dhawan had missed the New Zealand series through injury, but returns in place of Mayank Agarwal, who managed just 36 runs from three innings. Bhuvneshwar, who last featured in the home T20I series against West Indies in December, has recovered from his groin injury, and returns in place of Mohammed Shami who has been rested.

Kedar Jadhav, Shivam Dube and Shardul Thakur have been dropped from the 15-member contingent after poor returns in New Zealand. Meanwhile, opener Prithvi Shaw and right-arm quick Navdeep Saini have retained their places.

Rohit Sharma, the vice-captain continues to remain on the sidelines with a calf injury.

Squad: Virat Kohli (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Yadav, Shubman Gill.

It is a good squad from India.. South Africa has an uphill task here..I predict 3-0 in favor of India..

Always excited to see H.Pandya in Indian ODI setup! That will improve potential chances of winning in ODIs... Also Rohit is a must for ODIs (will win most of the matches) unfortunate he misses out. But we need to groom Prithvi Shaw pretty quickly (and even Gill hopefully!)

Rohit is not playing this series! South Africans can breath bit easily! Rahul should continue his form, this is his last chance to become a permanent member of the team!

Just like how NZ got their's boosted after Australian tour & WC humiliation

WC humiliation seriously? I think we should be the last ones making fun of NZ's WC campaign lol. And they are not the number 1 test team in the world. Nobody compares them with the old West Indian or Aus teams. :inti

I know Rohit and Shami are not playing in this series. I just made a full-strength side to just see how it would look when everyone will be fit.

Rahul is already a permanent member of the LO squad, he isn't going anywhere for next 1 year.

He is true to a lot of extent. That NZ series was a humiliation only for us.

NZ got humiliated in Australia but WC wasn't a humiliation for them. It was, the small margins, as Kane likes to say.

Proteas could avoid handshakes during India tour

Proteas coach Mark Boucher revealed that South Africa could avoid the customary handshakes ahead of their three-match ODI series against India.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed on Friday that the Proteas will continue their tour of India despite the ongoing concerns over the coronavirus.

According to India Today, as of 9 March, a total of 43 confirmed Covid-19 cases were reported in India.

However, none of the cities for the ODI series - Dharamshala, Lucknow and Kolkata - have recorded positive cases to date.

The global outbreak has forced multiple sporting events around the world to be either cancelled or played behind closed doors.

"If they feel it's too dangerous, they [will] pull us out. We've got a medical staff to look after that... We had a brief last Friday about the virus going around and obviously it's a major concern going around in the world," Boucher told reporters following their win over Australia in Potchefstroom over the weekend.

"We're not medical, we don't know medicine like they do, so we've taken their recommendations. We trust that they're putting stuff in place that can help us."
Joe Root's England became the first cricket team to ban handshakes for their current tour of Sri Lanka.

Boucher revealed on Saturday that the Proteas could do the same.

"With regards to handshakes and that type of stuff, it is a concern. You'll probably find that we'll do the same (as England)," said Boucher.

"It's just a way to stop anything from happening to the guys. I think it's also out of respect for the players around you, not to pass on something that you might have."

The Proteas come off a 3-0 whitewash ODI triumph over Australia - Boucher's first series win as head coach since his appointment in December last year.

"We've just beaten a very good team which certainly gives us a lot of confidence, but India is going to be a tough test in very different conditions... India is going to be a very tough challenge, we've got to keep climbing up," said Boucher.
The first of three ODIs is set to get underway on Thursday at 10:00 SA time.

It would be really nice if India lose this one as well.most of the so called are still arrogant it would be amazing if south Africa show them their place.
#guroor Ka sar neecha.

What WC humiliation? They were finalist and lost in a super over that too controversially.

That is the ultimate humiliation (super over). Ask Misbah & Pak Fans! Even Pak Fans keep reminding us about Miandad/Chetan Sharma! That's more humiliating! Pak fans were talking about CT humiliation for quite long time (because of crushing with big margin) but they seemed to have settled now! So even they have forgotten it finally! Its these delicate wins which bites us more often!

NZ didn't lose the finals though.Deciding the game on now extant rule was the problem

There were some mistakes from umpires too but if you call NZ final defeat a humiliation than what do you call indian test defeat to NZ? ;-)

De Kock wants senior players to ‘pass on knowledge to youngsters’

South Africa captain Quinton de Kock called for the senior members of the side, including himself, Faf du Plessis and David Miller, to shoulder greater responsibility and set an example for the youngsters.

De Kock also confirmed that du Plessis’s return for the three-match ODI series against India was very much a welcome one.

Du Plessis had been rested for the series against Australia, which South Africa won 3-0, and his return now will only further boost the side’s confidence for a tough series against a top side. “Obviously, Faf has come back. He plays a big role for us from the leadership point of view,” de Kock said on the eve of the first ODI in Dharamsala. “He is here to help out the younger guys in the team. He adds a lot of value for us. He also knows he has a lot of value to give to this team. His experience will be a big help for us this series.

“We understand that we are coming here with quite an inexperienced side in these conditions, but it’s important Faf, me and David Miller help out these guys, lead the way, pass on our knowledge to the youngsters.”

De Kock said that the team management is still in the process of figuring out a batting position for the former captain, and hoped his team can carry the confidence forward from their triumph against Australia. “Just glad to have him back with us,” de Kock said of du Plessis. We are undecided where he is going to bat at the moment, but we will come up with the decision later.

“India is an unbelievable team, they have got great balance, but I am sure we are also coming here with a lot of confidence.”

5-5? Lol.

tyron_woodley Please educate him about the importance of tests, odis and t20's. :inti

lol we got smashed period. having pannauti is like a curse.

test 2 0 loss. We did miss 2 key players for those conditions but loss is a loss.

odi apparently we don't care about this year rofl? I understand how important t20 is this year considering it's the world cup year but the loss in odi I suppose was excusable due to workload.

But test loss hurt us alot. Good thing is we get to displace some of our pannautis like pant for Rahul etc.

South Africa needs the money. It had to be done.

The remaining two one-dayers between India and South Africa will be played in empty stadiums in Lucknow and Kolkata due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The matches are scheduled to be held on March 15 (Lucknow) and March 18 (Kolkata).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in a statement released on Thursday said it "has been working closely with the Government of India along with Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) in the wake of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak."

"The World Health Organisation (WHO), on Wednesday, assessed that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic. The BCCI is making every effort for compliance with the regulatory bodies of the Government of India and ensure the safety of our athletes and valued fans," the release further added.

Earlier, Kiren Rijiju, the Union Sports Minister had said, "We are advising to the sporting bodies who are organising tournaments to ensure that the guidelines issued by the health ministry are maintained. They should ensure that mass gathering is avoided."

Empty stands

Statement from CAB: "We had a meeting with Mr. Rajiva Sinha, Chief Secretary, Government of West Bengal. He informed us about the Notifications issued by Government of India and that the same needs to be adhered to," said Avishek Dalmiya, CAB president.

Therefore, ticket sales for the 18th game have been put on hold for the time being. We would await further directions from the authorities and the BCCI in the matter. However, all other preparations for the game are on.”

Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association Secretary Yudhveer Singh said, “After the Government advisory, we did an inspection and also spoke to the BCCI officials. Now we have decided to hold the Lucknow match without spectators.”

Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) have agreed to postpone the balance of the current One-Day International tour of India due to the Novel Corona Virus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Both Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr Jacques Faul and Interim Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith have personally been in contact with the BCCI and have expressed their gratitude for their understanding and cooperation in arriving at this very responsible decision.

The two countries will now work together to find an appropriate window in the international cricket calendar for the three-match ODI series. The Proteas are currently preparing for their return to South Africa.

“Our view is that this decision is both necessary and a precaution that had to be taken in the interest of cricket and the sustainability of the game. We are monitoring the situation with the virus and are in constant consultation with medical and virology experts. We will apply our minds to the input of experts and act in a way that reflects our duty of caring for our players”, commented Dr Faul.

“We are currently doing a full risk assessment on the influence of the virus on our operations, including the current domestic season,” concluded Dr Faul.

Good news for India as they were coming up against Saffers in red hot form. After NZ the public couldn't have taken another phainty and Kohli's captaincy would have been under serious scrutiny.

n.z are only good in n.z and England. They would get a phainta everywhere. South Africa have never won a series in ndia apart from 2015.

We all know what happened when india last toured s.africa in odi. they lost 5 - 1

South Africa Cricketers Asked to Undergo 14-Day Self-Isolation After India Return

South African cricketers have been told they have to undergo self-isolation for two weeks after arriving home from the tour of India on Wednesday. The team, led by Quinton de Kock, was to play three ODIs in Dharamsala, Lucknow and Kolkata but the series was called off without a ball bowled due to the alarming rate at which coronavirus began spreading across the world.

While the first ODI was a washout, the second and third were to be played behind closed doors before being abandoned. The team was to leave home from Delhi but chose the safety of Kolkata which, till their departure, had reported not one case of coronavirus infection.

Cricket South Africa’s medical officer Dr. Shuaib Manjra was with the team during the entirety of their 10-day India sojourn, said the players have been educated about the pandemic.

“We’ve educated the players about the disease,” Manjra was quoted as saying by the AFP. “We’ve recommended that all players self-isolate and social-distance themselves for a minimum of 14 days to protect people around them and their communities.”

Manjra revealed the team decided for the tour to go ahead as earlier the risk was deemed to be very low.

“CSA had engaged in a risk assessment before the tour. We deemed the risk to be very low. While on tour the world became a different place and we had to take cognisance of the fact that there was a change in the global environment,” he said.

Midway through their stay, the situation changed rapidly with exponential rise in the spread of the virus and its victims. Ultimately, the fear of border closure and player’s mental state regarding their families contributed to their decision.

“Ultimately the players’ frame of mind was the determining factor,” he said.

The number of coronavirus cases in South Africa have gone up to 116 with their president already declaring the virus as a national disaster on Sunday.

The coronavirus pandemic was put international sporting calendar out of the window with all major tournaments either being cancelled or postoponed.
