The South African players have left the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had asked the Cricket South Africa (CSA) to extend their stay till at least May 15 (by when the league stage would be over) but the CSA stuck to its original deadline of May 7. The CSA’s refusal to pay heed to the BCCI request comes at a time when the Indian board’s influence at the international level is at an all-time low.

As is well known, the BCCI’s word did not prevail in the International Cricket Council (ICC) fora where it was outvoted 1-9 and recently Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sent a legal notice to the BCCI. There were 10 South Africans in the IPL 10 -- Chris Morris (DD), Kagiso Rabada (DD), Hashim Amla (KXIP), David Miller (KXIP), Faf du Plessis (RPS), Imran Tahir (RPS), AB de Villiers (RCB) and Tabraiz Shamsi (RCB) -- and among the sides, Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) would, perhaps, be the worst affected by the South Africans’ exit.

Tahir was Pune’s best bowler and his absence could be badly felt by the Supergiants, who would feel further pinch when Ben Stokes, the team’s other key player, would have to leave after May 14. There was apparently requests from a few teams, including Mumbai Indians, to allow the English players to play the play-offs but the English media reported that Andrew Strauss, the director of England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), declined permission.

Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils too will miss the South Africans. Amla was Mohali side’s batting mainstay and their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs could take a jolt just as Delhi’s, whose key players – Morris and Rabada – have left. AB de Villiers has always been a top draw in the IPL but with Royal Challengers Bangalore out of reckoning, there won’s be much damage to the Bangalore side.

So, the play-offs, which start on May 16, will be without the South Africans and the English players but the Australians, Kiwis, West Indians and the Afghans will be available till the end of the league. The final will be played on May 21 in Hyderabad.

I guess national duty does come before the "lallu panju leagues" haha

CSA should have allowed their players to earn some extra cash, they gonna choke in CT anyways...

:))) fall?

Every year cricketers have to leave ipl for international duties.

This is like when english players left psl1 for international duties. Does that mean psl 1 was a failiure?

Exactly. I am also disappointed to not see these players revolting against their own boards to play in the biggest pyjama league of all time.

No but there was possibility that CSA could have extended it but they didn't, who knows previously they might have been flexible in doing so, cos I'm sure the players won't mind.

So when the players are going back to their international sides, does the BCCI ask for extended deadlines every year?

It seems you are unaware of the hottest topic of this month.

Few of the BCCI spokesperson claimed here that players will choose IPL over internationals because this is the richest cricket league in the world. So it is quite surprising to see players leaving just to play for their national teams where they will not be payed as much as IPL do for playing 2 months of pyjama cricket. Good to see they know their priorities.

Anyhow the future of IPL is dependent on young local Indian talents (who may or may not get chance to play international cricket, as international cricket is anyhow occupied by at least 6-10 prominent seniors! Also some discarded guys like Gambhir, Raina, Harbhajan do more than well in IPL!) And further more players from remote nations like Afghanistan, Ireland, etc, may feature in IPL, because they anyhow may not get much of proper International Cricket, even if they do - it will not even be Pyjama cricket, it is underwear/langoti cricket - ICC qualifier world cups watched by insects from where they (some of them) go on to make guest/thorn appearance in World Cups once in a while!

This is how IPL is trending and I am sure it will be a sure success on its own solely dependent on Indian Players (and the players I mentioned above) International Cricketers do make impact (but not decisive), actually hardly any South African Cricketer made significant impact in the ongoing season, so its not going to affect much! (Definitely lower teams like West Indies, Sri Lanka, etc. are definitely going to continue supplying players to IPL by adjusting their calendars accordingly. Sri Lanka is due for long time in producing good number of cricketing talents again!)

You are one of those rare Indians who doesn't support IPL, it seems.

lmao, this happens every year and this was known from before. Some of you guys - smh.

You were strangely absent during the recent BCCI threats of boycott and intimidation when they wanted more money. I missed your moral lectures regarding blackmail and greed - the same ones you used to dish to Pak fans. So disappointing.

All of this is normal. Why are some geniuses celebrating and acting as if something strange as happened?

Didnt ipl start ages ago? Why is it so long? Surely they would look to complete the tournament before international stars need to return home?

Or are they so concerned with money that the quality of the final stage can drop if it means more games and more money for the league

This was known before the tournament that England, South Africa, and New Zealand players would be leaving earlier.

Don't know what the victory laps are for. It literally happens 'every' year.

Not sure why though some boards did not grant the extension to their players.

Maybe it is a political battle right now with everyone vs. the BCCI.

https://thefield.scroll.in/837166/b...-threat-to-pull-its-players-out-of-ipl-report

Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive of Cricket South Africa (CSA), wrote a letter to Rahul Johri, the CEO at Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), "requesting" the latter to confirm India's tour of South Africa starting with the Boxing Day Test later this year, following which he would agree to South African cricketers continuing to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Johri confirmed receiving the communication from Lorgat and added that he had chosen to "ignore" the request. "I didn't even bother to communicate. We will communicate when the time is right," Johri told TOI.

In what seems to be a clear case of CSA trying to arm-twist the BCCI by "dangling the carrot" of IPL participation, Lorgat took a defiant stand and decided not to extend the window for South African cricketers playing in the IPL. The deadline for South Africans partaking in the IPL 2017 came to an end on May 8, following which they have now left their respective franchises.

CSA, for the record, expects India to make the tour of South Africa in December this year, keeping the Boxing Day Test in mind whereas the BCCI hasn't confirmed anything yet. Sources in the know of things say "India could tour South Africa starting January".

CSA's stand on matters involving India, say industry sources, is clearly "an unfair one" and comes in the wake of a "weak" Indian board not being able to assert itself in the ICC.

Haha.. At the end this was it all about.

LOL.

Good on Johri for being competent for once and completely ignoring Lorgat.

So Lorgat was trying to secure an Indian series by using the CSA players release to IPL as a bargaining chip. And this series is to happen when India is supposed to be playing Pakistan towards the end of the year.

South African and England players were supposed to leave early for their national duties and that was announced long ago:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/indian-premier-league-2017/content/story/1082426.html

quoting from the above article which was posted in February:

South African players are likely to leave IPL 2017 after May 7 while the England players are scheduled to depart the tournament in two batches - a few after May 1 and the rest after May 14.

so it happened as expected... nothing new here to be read as something else

So why did BCCI ask the deadline to be moved?

So much for the BCCI not needing the ICC. Not one star player will play in their league over their country.

Everything is now twisted to suggest how BCCI has fallen and how its the end of Indian cricket.

Well let them have their time in the sun. BCCI will rise :srini

BCCI will rise back again. Its entangled in internal mess at the moment. Once that is sorted its time for some entertainment.Revenge would be bitter for most boards. Enjoy while it lasts.
