Sports minister: South Africa teams too white

Cape Town - Minister of Sport and Recreation Thulas Nxesi has expressed his concern on transformation in relation to teams that represent South Africa at international sporting events.

Nxesi was speaking after the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee’s (SASCOC) general meeting at Olympic House in Johannesburg this past weekend.

“Let us remind ourselves that the transformation of sport is a national priority to promote social cohesion and nation building. Whilst we have seen real progress in some codes - most spectacularly with Rugby 7s - progress appears to be slow in relation to our participation in multi-coded international events,” Nxesi said via a press statement.

“For the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Team South Africa was more than 70% white. At Rio the representation was 60% white. I hope we will see further improvement in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"This is about the national image of the country and the credibility of Team South Africa. It is about the political impact of the optics: people see an overwhelmingly white delegation to an international event, and questions are asked in Parliament - and we have to explain why development and transformation is so slow.”

Nxesi in his address also highlighted the challenges sport bodies face.

“We need to discuss the proposition that we may well be delivering sport in an ill-defined environment characterised by inaccessibility, inequality and low participation rates,” said Nxesi.

“SASCOC performs crucial functions for sport in the country bestowed and delegated to it in terms of the National Sport and Recreation Amendment Act no. 18 of 2007. SRSA and SASCOC have a joint interest in the well-being of sport.”

Whatever happened to merit

Quotas are unfair to an athlete who has worked his whole life to represent their country.

If the South African doesnt want them to play because of their colour why cant they be allowed to setup another team. Its not as if they want to but why should they suffer after all their hard work.

I have no ill will towards the whites but if their ancestors had shown even 10% sympathy and fairness towards others in the past we won't be in this mess. If all the whites had sat in their own country Africans(and India, middle east, just about every part of the world) won't be in this mess. So, no sir, there is not much sympathy for a whites now in the rest of the world, though honestly it is the white race and not every individual who has brought upon us this day.

It's same as Shashi Tharoor mugging up 11th grade NCERT Economics textbook and whining about the reparations that Britain owes to India. Why should present day native Brits (not @Cpt Rishwat ) made to pay for something in which they had no role to play to begin with?

Not sure how much white privilege exists in South Africa, but exists a lot in US/UK. I have been beneficiary of caste privilege myself, often unknown to me.

However its most keenly felt in Saffer domestic cricket where really the game is destroyed. If you see a domestic game its 6-7 minimum colored on one side most of the times. And quite a few are substandard colored players getting in the team. More importantly any talented white kid would stay away unless he is certain star of the future

Interested to see what are the guidelines for players that fit the "quota" spots. Do they have arbitrary cutoffs for how dark the pigment of the skin can be to qualify for the quotas. You can't just look at a player's skin color and say "this guy belongs to a line of people who were racially targeted during the apartheid" just because of a darker skin killer than most white players. What if you are brown? What if the mother of the player was white but father was white? That would not yield a definitive black/white skin colour.

If the South African govt said we are going to have a quota system then it maybe stupid in this day and age but why dont they just say to the white guys we dont need you, you can create your own teams.
