Sri Lanka's lead crossed the 300-run mark after an excellent performance from Ramesh Mendis with the ball and some handy contributions from their batters.

Yasir Shah and Hasan Ali did put up a resistance in the morning of day three, but once the stand was broken, Sri Lanka cleaned up the tail relatively quickly. The pair established a 32-run stand, which was ended by Prabath Jayasuriya, who bowled Ali for 21. Nauman Ali was the next to walk, getting stumped off the bowling of Ramesh Mendis for 1. Mendis would scalp his fifth wicket, trapping Yasir for 26, as Pakistan's innings ended on 231, with the hosts taking a 147-run lead.

A new opening pair fails to pay dividends

With skipper Dimuth Karunaratne suffering from back spasms, out walked a new opening pair of Oshada Fernando and wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella. The latter played a couple of cracking shots to get going, but could not stay in for the long haul. The opening stand between the pair would only last for 27 runs, with Dickewella being dismissed on 145 by a beauty from Naseem Shah.

Fernando would be the next one to depart, with Yasir Shah striking off his very first delivery, trapping him in front for 19. A similar story to the first innings was again playing out, as all the Sri Lankan batters got starts, but failed to convert it into a substantial score. Kusal Mendis (15), Angelo Mathews (35), and Dinesh Chandimal (21), all failed to punish the Pakistan bowlers.

For the visitors though, their bowlers were bowling with great discipline that the hosts were not running away with the scoring.

Karunaratne, de Silva steady the ship before bad light plays spoilsport

A partnership finally took shape for Sri Lanka, as their lead crossed the 300-run mark. Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne walked out to bat at No.6 and was joined by Dhananjaya de Silva. The pair embarked on a solid unbeaten 59-run stand, which helped their target of fattening up the lead.

Karunaratne was unbeaten on 27, while de Silva was batting on 30*, as the Sri Lanka lead had reached the 323-run mark. Bad light would then intervene to lead to an early end to the contest, but Sri Lanka would be happy with a solid day of play.

What can you expect from someone who focuses more on his comedy skills than bowling? Pakistan's pace bowling is at its worst times when it is being led by the likes of Hasan Ali who resorts to cross seam in his 2 over. It reminds me of the days when Anwar Ali used to lead our attack. Lol

It is amazing to see likes of Hasan Ali, Azhar, Nauman and Yasir can't even perform against this SL side. Time to dump these players and show faith in new guys. After all we were saved by a youngster in the last game. Get these oldies out of team. At least with young blood we will have something different to look up to.

Pakistan pulled things back a bit as it could've been worse.

Pakistan should keep the target to below 380. They can chase it down maybe.

It's Sri Lanka at home, I guess you missed the Aussie series a few weeks ago?

Naseem Shah presser:

"For a fast-bowler, the new ball moves around a bit for the first 2 overs but after that; I feel that this pitch is not an easy one for fast-bowlers and all we can do is to try and bowl in the right areas as there is no help from the pitch such as swing or seam"

"As a fast-bowler you have to play the match regardless of what pitch is there, you can't use the pitch as an excuse; For me it's important to bowl in the right areas, especially when there is no help available from the pitch"

"This is cricket and it can happen, we chased 350+ in the first Test and our batting did not do well in the first innings in the first game and the same has happened in this match as well"

"I am hopeful that we will play well in the second innings in this game because the pitch does not have so much 'break' this time around as it did in the previous game; So I feel we will bat much better in the second innings, God Willing"

"We will look to limit the lead to 350-360 mark and basically look to get them out as soon as possible and to go for the chase in a positive manner"

"I can't say how much turn it will have in the last day but all I can say is that the ball was turning much more in the first Test and this pitch is also not that quick"

"I have some great conversations with Shaun Tait about bowling and he gives some positive advice to us bowlers; The best part is that he motivates us really well; When we are making mistakes or are not bowling well, he always picks out the positives which is what you need as a fast-bowler because it helps you relax and makes you think about doing better"

"I have said this before that when I started off, the bowling action that I liked the most was that of Shane Bond and I wanted to bowl like him; Once I understood cricket a bit more, I also got influenced by our fast-bowlers by watching their YouTube videos"

:)) Youtube ftw.

Pakistan have been so timid and lacklustre in this match.

Really poor approach.

Negative mindset from the outset, as if they wanted to escape with a draw.

Pakistan must have the most overrated Test bowling lineup.

Without Shaheen Afridi its a who's who of ineptitude and not being good enough at the highest level.

The continued theory that Nauman Ali is good enough is mind-boggling.

Then you have a kid in Naseem trying to play the longer format and continues to look raw and undercooked.

Hasan Ali has been been better in Tests than the shorter format but isn't reliable enough to lead an attack on his own.

Yasir Shah's best was 5-6 years ago. He's nowhere near good enough, or even is optimum physical condition.

The point of organising a squad in this format is to help with the bowling side as well as the batting. It seems like whoever picks the squads doesn't see the need to pick one that can take 20 wickets, but have Yasir Shah over owl and hope for some magic by Shaheen.

They seriously need a rethink in their tactics and squad picks.
