Sri Lanka to host India and Bangladesh for T20I Tri-Nation Series in March 2018

Colombo: Sri Lanka's limited-overs captain Angelo Mathews has been ruled out of next month's tri-nation Twenty20 tournament after failing to recover from a hamstring injury, the country`s cricket board said Tuesday.

The hosts will be led by Dinesh Chandimal in the series starting March 6 at Colombo's R Premadasa Stadium. India and Bangladesh are the other two teams.

Sri Lanka Cricket announced a 20-man preliminary squad that will be cropped to 15 on Wednesday.

"Angelo Mathews was not considered for selection as he is still recovering from the injury he suffered during the concluded tri-nation series in Bangladesh," the board said in a release.

Mathews, 30, was in January named Sri Lanka's captain in the shorter format until the 2019 World Cup.

But the all-rounder has been beset by injuries and has led the side in just a single one-day international, against Zimbabwe in Dhaka last month.

Sri Lanka recently swept their Bangladesh tour, winning both the Test and T20I series, after a come-from-behind win in the tri-series involving Zimbabwe.

CHANDIMAL SUSPENDED FOR TWO T20IS FOR A SERIOUS OVER-RATE OFFENCE

Bangladesh also fined for a minor over-rate offence in Saturday’s match

Dinesh Chandimal has been suspended from Sri Lanka’s upcoming two Twenty20 Internationals in the three-nation series after being found guilty of a serious over-rate offence in Saturday’s match against Bangladesh in Colombo.

Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees imposed the fine after Chandimal’s side was ruled to be four overs short of their target when time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.5.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel, which relates to serious over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for the first two overs and 20 per cent per additional over their side failed to bowl in the allotted time, while the captain receives two suspension points.

As two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player, Chandimal has been suspended from his side’s 12 and 16 March fixtures against India and Bangladesh respectively, while each of his players have received a fine of 60 per cent.

Chandimal pleaded not guilty to the offence, and, as such, Mr Broad announced his decision following a hearing that took place on Sunday afternoon. The hearing was attended by the match officials and the Sri Lanka cricket team management.

If Sri Lanka commit another serious over-rate breach in a T20I within 12 months of this offence with Chandimal as captain, it will be deemed as a second offence by Chandimal and he will receive between two and eight suspension points.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah has also received a 20 per cent fine of his match fee, while each of his players have received 10 per cent fines after their side was ruled to be one over short. This was as per Article 2.5.1, which deals with minor over-rate offences.

If Bangladesh commit another minor over-rate breach in a T20I within 12 months of this offence with Mahmudullah as captain, it will be deemed as a second offence by Mahmudullah and he will face suspension.

Mahmudullah pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Ranmore Martinez and Raveendra Wimalasiri, third umpire Lyndon Hannibal and fourth umpire Deepal Gunawardene
