Coach Chris Silverwood said Sri Lanka would be doing their absolute best to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final during their two-match series in New Zealand to give the people back home something to cheer about.

Sri Lanka, who are third in the WTC rankings behind already-qualified Australia and India, will need to beat the reigning Test champions Black Caps 2-0 to have a chance of playing in June’s final at The Oval.

India could take matters out of Sri Lankan hands with a win in their fourth Test against Australia next week, but Silverwood said the team would be determined to take advantage of any slip up to raise the spirits of an embattled nation.

“It would mean everything to them,” he said in Christchurch ahead of a tour game against a New Zealand XI. “The country has been through a bit recently and we know the spirits are really lifted when the cricket team is doing well.

“The guys are very awa*re of that and take that responsibility very seriou*sly, so they’ll be desperate to give them something to smile about back at home.

“To get to the WTC Final would be unbelievable, but at the same time we know we’ve got a very good New Zealand team in front of us as well and we have to resp*ect that, work hard, and try and earn that right.”

Sri Lanka is grappling with its worst economic crisis since gaining independence from Britain in 1948, beset by inflation, a shortage of foreign exchange, a plummeting currency and a steep recession.

The tourists will play a youthful New Zealand XI over the weekend at Bert Sutcliffe Oval to prepare for the opening Test against New Zealand at Christ*church’s Hagley Oval starting next Thursday.

“We’re looking to get as ready as possible for the first Test match, we want to hit the road running and to do that we have to make sure that we prep well here,” Silverwood added.

“We want to make sure the batsmen get a good hit and get used to conditions and that bowlers get overs under their belts as well.”

New Zealand captain Tim Southee is hoping his side can build on their thrilling triumph over England last month when they host Sri Lanka in a two-Test series that commences in Christchurch on Thursday.

The Black Caps sent England tumbling to just their second Test loss under the watchful eye of new coach Brendon McCullum when they registered an exciting one-run triumph over the European side in Wellington last week, and the Kiwis now turn their attention to the visiting Sri Lanka for two red-ball contests in quick succession.

The series is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship period (2021-23) and Sri Lanka still have an outside chance of reaching June's decider should they complete a 2-0 scoreline, but Southee is aiming to make it as difficult as possible for the tourists to achieve.

Southee is instead focusing on his team's preparations and ensuring they take all the momentum from the England series into the visit of Sri Lanka.

"It has been great to have the amount of people who have been talking about Test cricket, to see the Basin Reserve filled for five days was great to be a part of," Southee said.

"I think, just in general, the guys are pleased to see people talking about Test cricket. And Test cricket being exciting. England have played their part in that, over the last year or so. The guys still see Test cricket as the pinnacle of the game.

"It is a match that will be talked about for a long time, but they are a very humble group. Now our focus will shift to Sri Lanka.

"We are obviously out of the Test Championship, and they have got plenty to play for over the next two weeks."

New Zealand's preparations for the series have not been entirely straight forward, with key quick Kyle Jamieson remaining sidelined due to the back injury he picked up in England last year.

Former skipper Kane Williamson has also been absent from training in Christchurch this week, with the veteran remaining with family in Tauranga in the lead-up to mourn the death of his late grandmother.

"On behalf of the team, I think everyone is feeling for Kane at the moment and he is in the best place he can be. And that is with, in and around, his family. It is a sad time for the Williamson family," Southee said.

"We are looking forward to Kane joining up. He has been able to train with the Northern Districts guys in Tauranga, so I am sure he will be hitting plenty of balls and making sure he is ready to go come Thursday."

Wagner ruled out of 2nd Dulux Test against Sri Lanka

Neil Wagner has been ruled out of the second Dulux Test against Sri Lanka at the Cello Basin Reserve after a scan today revealed he has a bulging disc in his back and a torn right hamstring.

Wagner felt pain in his right leg while bowling on Day three at Hagley Oval and the scan today revealed the extent of his injuries.

The injuries will require an estimated six weeks of recovery time.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead said the whole team were feeling for Wagner.

“We all know how much playing Test cricket for New Zealand means to Neil and we are all disappointed to see him side-lined like this.

“The fact he was still hoping to play on, carrying these injuries shows you just how determined he is to try and give his all for the team.”

If required, Wagner will be available to bat in the ongoing Test match in Christchurch.

Latham to lead New Zealand in ODI series against Sri Lanka

New Zealand have named a new-look side for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting March 25.

New Zealand will be without ODI regulars Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Devon Conway and Mitchell Santner. Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson and Glenn Phillips will also be released from the squad after the first ODI to travel to India for the IPL.

The three players will be replaced by Henry Nicholls, Mark Chapman and Ben Lister in the squad from the second ODI onwards. The series will also witness the returns of Will Young and Tom Blundell to the ODI setup.

Skipper Tom Latham will be able to bank on the presence of regulars like Daryl Mitchell, Ish Sodhi and Michael Bracewell for all the three ODIs.

New Zealand have also handed a call-up to Chad Bowes, who could be in line to make his international debut for his country.

On the selections, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said, "It’s always exciting as a coach to have new players in the environment and to have players putting their hands up to be selected again in a particular format.

"We are set to play 16 white ball matches between now and the start of May so there will be a number of chances for players to test themselves in familiar and unfamiliar conditions."

The three matches will be played between March 25 and 31 in Auckland, Christchurch and Hamilton.

All rounder Rachin Ravindra has been called into the BLACKCAPS ODI Squad to face Sri Lanka.

Ravindra has been called up to replace Michael Bracewell, who has been released from the white ball squad to join Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

Ravindra will assemble with the ODI squad in Auckland on Wednesday, ahead of the first match of the ANZ ODI Series at Eden Park on Saturday March 25.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead said the news provided opportunities for both players.

“Michael’s been a key contributor to our white ball teams since making his debut last year.

“It’s exciting he’ll get a chance to take up the learning opportunities the IPL provides - particularly as a spin bowling all-rounder.

“With a World Cup in India this year it’s great to have players getting more experience in those conditions.”

Stead said he had been impressed by the way Ravindra had continued to develop with bat and ball this season across all formats.

“This will be another good chance for him to spend time in the BLACKCAPS environment.”

Ravindra has played T20I and Test cricket for New Zealand but is uncapped in One Day Internationals.

Ex-South Africa Under-19 captain Chad Bowes and all-rounder Rachin Ravindra will make their one-day international debuts for New Zealand against Sri Lanka when the three-match series starts Saturday.

Bowes is set to open the batting for the Black Caps at Auckland's Eden Park more than a decade after skippering South Africa's juniors at the 2012 Under-19 World Cup before moving to New Zealand.

Ravindra has already played three Tests and six Twenty20s for New Zealand.

"Both guys have earned their spots through performances in the domestic white-ball arena, so we're really excited about the opportunity," said New Zealand captain Tom Latham.

After whitewashing Sri Lanka 2-0 in the Tests, New Zealand have released several stars including Kane Williamson, Tim Southee and Devon Conway to their Indian Premier League teams.

The sides are looking to break their ODI losing streaks -- New Zealand and Sri Lanka both lost all three ODIs on separate tours of India in January.

Sri Lanka head into the New Zealand series needing to win all three matches to claim a direct spot at the ODI World Cup in India later this year. New Zealand have already qualified.

Sri Lanka have included experienced former Test captain Angelo Mathews in their white-ball squad.

Captain Dasun Shanaka is confident that Sri Lanka can win in Auckland, Christchurch and Hamilton over the next week to avoid having to play in an ODI World Cup qualifying tournament.

"It's possible. It depends on the day. New Zealand is a good side and we aren't taking anything for granted. We need to do the hard work to win the series," the all-rounder added.

New Zealand won by 198 runs

Pathetic performance by Sri Lanka batters. Surely NZ bowler's aren't that good?

At Eden Park, Auckland: Black Caps 274 all out in 49.3 overs (Finn Allen 51 off 49, Rachin Ravindra 49 off 52, Daryl Mitchell 47 off 58; Chamika Karunaratne 4-43 off 9) beat Sri Lanka 76 all out in 19.5 overs (Henry Shipley 5-31 off 7) by 198 runs

Finn Allen made 51 after an early piece of luck and Henry Shipley took 5-31 as the Black Caps beat Sri Lanka by 198 runs in the first one-day international at Eden Park on Saturday.

Allen’s off stump was hit by a delivery from Kasun Rajitha in the third over of the match, when he was on nine, but the bails didn’t move and he went on to make 51 off 49 – his team’s highest score.

The Black Caps were ultimately dismissed for 274 with three balls remaining after being sent in by Dasun Shanaka, as Allen was followed by several of his team-mates in failing to kick on.

Henry Shipley then delivered his best ODI bowling performance as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 76 inside 20 overs, taking 5-31 from his seven overs to set up New Zealand’s seventh-largest ODI win in terms of runs.

Allen also avoided a close run-out shout when he got bogged down after his opening partner Chad Bowes was dismissed for 14 off 15 on debut.

He got going again in the 18th over, hitting leg-spinner Wanindu Harasinga for back-to-back sixes, then adding a four off Chamika Karunaratne in the 19th to bring up his fifth ODI half-century.

The powerful hitter then attempted one big swing too many off the next ball he faced and was caught at deep third for what turned out to be his team’s highest score.

Daryl Mitchell was the other top-four batter to make a start but not kick on, departing when Karunaratne leapt high at mid-on to take a catch and dismiss him for 47 off 58.

Rachin Ravindra marked his ODI debut with a crucial innings of 49 off 52 at No 7 that helped the Black Caps post a competitive total after they slumped to 152-5 in the 30th over following Mitchell’s dismissal.

The left-hander shared in a partnership of 66 with Glenn Phillips for the sixth wicket, which ended when Phillips was caught at deep mid-wicket for 39 off 42, having taken 12 balls to find his first run.

Karunaratne finished with 4-43, but only bowled nine overs, while fellow seamers Lahiru Kumar and Rajitha each picked up a pair of wickets.

The Black Caps’ total was short of where it could have been had one of their batters kicked on, but they got an early breakthrough when a mix-up led to Nuwanidu Fernando being run out in the third over.

Shipley then took charge and claimed his first four wickets in a six-over spell as Sri Lanka slumped to 31-5 in the 10th over, with Kusal Mendis making a 16-ball duck and Dasun bizarrely reviewing a catch at first slip.

Veteran Angelo Mathews was the last remaining recognised batter in his return to ODIs after a two-year absence, but he was then trapped LBW by Blair Tickner for 18 off 25.

At 46-6, Sri Lanka were in an almighty hole and they ultimately mustered just 76 – their fifth-lowest ODI total – with Mitchell taking 2-12 and Tickner 2-20.

The first ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka on Saturday witnessed a bizarre moment. The match at Eden Park, Auckland was won by New Zealand by a big margin but not before it saw a controversial decision being given by the umpire. On the fourth ball of the 18th over of Sri Lanka's innings, Chamika Karunaratne hit a Blair Tickner delivery towards mid-wicket region and tried to go for a double. Given a second run was not possible, Karunaratne tried to return to the non-striker's end but he failed to get there in time.

Ticker dislodged the bails but the bails didn't light up and to everyone's surprise, Karunaratne was given not out by the umpire.

It was later revealed that the bails didn't light up due to dead battery.

Talking about the match, Henry Shipley tore through Sri Lanka's batting line-up as New Zealand romped to a 198-run win in Auckland on Saturday.

Playing just his fourth match for the Black Caps, tall seamer Shipley took 5-31 as the tourists were skittled for 76 at Eden Park, their lowest ODI score against New Zealand and their fifth-lowest ever. Sri Lanka's capitulation in 19.5 overs made it their second shortest innings. The visitors never recovered after slumping to 31-5, with only three batters reaching double figures, including top scorer Angelo Mathews (18)

It comes just two months after Sri Lanka's world-record 317-run loss to India in Thiruvananthapuram -- when they were out for 73.

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI

Match abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain (no toss)

Sri Lanka picked up five crucial Super League points when their ODI against New Zealand was abandoned but their hopes of direct qualification to the Cricket World Cup 2023 remain hanging by a thread.

New Zealand's fickle weather has once again proven costly for Sri Lanka as the second ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League ODI between the two sides was abandoned without a ball bowled.

The frustrating outcome in the second ODI of the series has left Sri Lanka’s direct qualification hopes for this year's ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup hanging by a thread with one match to play.

Earlier this month the rain in Christchurch robbed Sri Lanka of valuable time on the fifth and final day of a thrilling Test match against the Kiwis, and the skies above New Zealand's third largest city again played spoilsport as persistent rain meant there was no play at all at Hagley Oval on Tuesday.

It meant Sri Lanka missed the chance to strengthen their claims of qualifying directly for this year's Cricket World Cup and now face the prospect of having to qualify via the Qualifier tournament set to be played in Zimbabwe during June and July.

Sri Lanka only have one match remaining in the Super League, with their clash against New Zealand in the third and final ODI in Hamilton on Friday their last chance to overtake the West Indies and into a critical top-eight place to qualify automatically for this year's tournament.

But even if Sri Lanka do win that final ODI against New Zealand to earn an extra 10 Super League points and rise into eighth spot on the standings, they could still be forced into the Qualifier in Zimbabwe as 10th placed South Africa have enough matches in hand to overtake them.

South Africa have two matches left of their postponed ODI series against the Netherlands and wins in both of those contests would see the Proteas jump in front of both Sri Lanka and the West Indies and into the pivotal eighth place.

Eleventh-placed Ireland could also still qualify automatically, given they have three matches remaining against Bangladesh in May.

New Zealand currently sit at the top of the Super League standings with 165 points and also have one match left to play in the series.

ICC

Sri Lanka have been fined 20 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against New Zealand in the first ODI in Auckland on Saturday.

Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Dasun Shanaka’s side was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

In addition, as per Article 16.12.2 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League Playing Conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, Sri Lanka will lose one point from their points tally during the Super League.

Shanaka pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Shaun Haig and Wayne Knights, third umpire Chris Brown and fourth umpire Cory Black leveled the charge.

Sri Lanka trails New Zealand 1-0 in the three-match series with the first game won by the hosts and the second a wash out. A win in Hamilton would give them 10 crucial points in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League.

The top eight sides in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League standings qualify directly for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The five remaining teams will participate in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, all set to be played in Zimbabwe in June-July 2023.

The Qualifier will be a ten-team event, which will feature the bottom five of the Super League, top three of the recently concluded ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 and the top two sides from the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off in Namibia.

Two out of these will make it to the World Cup in India.

The top seven sides in the Super League standings are in the clear of making it to the World Cup, while the bottom two, Zimbabwe (65) and Netherlands (35), are sure to play the Qualifier.

That means the eighth direct spot for the global event is a tussle between four sides. West Indies are presently at eighth with 88 points but having played all their games in the Super League cycle can only view the rest of the proceedings as a spectator.

Sri Lanka are currently placed ninth (81 points) with a game to go. South Africa (78 points) are one below with two to play, and Ireland (68 points) have three fixtures in hand.

South Africa are due to play two Super League matches against Netherlands on 31 March and 2 April respectively, while Ireland host Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series in May. Both teams would look to win all their remaining encounters, which will put them at 98 points each, above both West Indies and Sri Lanka, to ensure a direct entry.

For the Lions, a loss tomorrow would mean that they remain below West Indies in the Super League standings irrespective of other results. That would mean that the team will have to travel to Africa in June for the qualifiers to secure a direct spot.

Sri Lanka’s quest for direct Cricket World Cup qualification takes a hit after point loss
Hence a win, even if not a guarantee to a direct spot, would keep Lankan hopes alive for now.

Given New Zealand’s dominant display in the first game at Auckland, the Dasun Shanaka-led side will know that they have a tall task at hand.

Sri Lanka completely pulverised. If I am not mistaken they now are confirmed to play in the qualifier, maybe alongside South Africa?

May have a world cup without one of SL or SA as can see Zimbabwe springing a surprise at home

New Zealand win the ODI series 2-0 and Sri Lanka fails to secure direct qualification for ICC 2023 Cricket World Cup

Sri Lanka have failed to snatch the eight spot in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League table after succumbing to a defeat against New Zealand in the third ODI at Hamilton.

Calling it right at the toss, Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka opted to bat first in the crucial encounter. But the Sri Lankan batters failed to fire yet again, struggling against the pace and bounce of the New Zealand bowlers.

Matt Henry (3/14), Henry Shipley (3/32) and Daryl Mitchell (3/32) were all outstanding with the ball, as Sri Lanka huffed and puffed to cross the 150-run mark.

For Sri Lanka, Pathum Nissanka (57 off 64), Dasun Shanaka (31 off 36) and Chamika Karunaratne (24 off 42) were the only batters to show any form of resistance. The visitors were bowled out for 157 in 41.3 overs, with their bowlers now facing a herculean task of getting their side over the line.

In reply, New Zealand's chase got off to a rocky start as they lost three wickets within the first seven overs. Four of their batters – Chad Bowes, Tom Blundell, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham – failed to reach the double-digit mark.

But Will Young and Henry Nicholls played vital knocks to get the hosts over the line. The pair established a partnership of 100 runs with Young scoring 86* and Nicholls 44* to seal a six-wicket win for New Zealand.

With the victory in Hamilton, New Zealand secured a 2-0 win in the three-match ODI series.

With the defeat, Sri Lanka have failed to overtake West Indies (88 points) for the final direct qualification spot. Sri Lanka end their CWCSL campaign on 81 points. Sri Lanka will now travel to Zimbabwe in June to compete in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier and look to secure their place in the 2023 edition of the tournament later this year.

New Zealand end on the top spot of the CWCSL standings, accumulating 175 points in their campaign.

West Indies could still be pipped in the race for the eighth spot by South Africa (78 points) and Ireland (68 points). South Africa will play a two-match ODI series against Netherlands starting today, while Ireland have a three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in May.

Sri Lanka will have to go through a qualifying stage to reach October's 50-over World Cup after a six-wicket defeat by New Zealand in Hamilton.

The 1996 champions, who have featured in every 50-over World Cup, are now unable to qualify automatically.

They were bowled out for 157 after opting to bat, with Pathum Nissanka making 57 and Dasun Shanaka 31.

New Zealand were 59-4 but Will Young (86*) and Henry Nicholls (40*) shared an unbroken 100 to see the hosts home.

Matt Henry took 3-14 for the Kiwis as Sri Lanka were reduced to 18-3 before all-rounder Daryl Mitchell and fast bowler Henry Shipley both claimed 3-32.

The win sees New Zealand take the three-match series 2-0 after a 198-run win in the first game before a washout in the second.

It leaves West Indies in the eighth and final World Cup qualifying spot in the International Cricket Council's World Cup Super League table but they could be overtaken by South Africa and Ireland.

South Africa face Netherlands later on Friday and on Sunday, knowing at least one win and avoiding defeat in the second game would see them climb to eighth.

Two wins would see them to 98 points, which Ireland could match with three wins against Bangladesh in their series between 9 and 14 May.

If both have 98 points then net run-rate would decide who qualifies, with them also level on nine wins.

The World Cup qualifying tournament, which takes place in Zimbabwe between 18 June and 9 July, will see two sides qualify for the World Cup in India.

Sri Lanka, who are led by former head coach Chris Silverwood, will be joined by Netherlands, Zimbabwe, Nepal, Oman and Scotland.

Two of West Indies, South Africa and Ireland will also be in the qualifiers, alongside two other sides who are already competing in a qualifying tournament.

Sri Lanka have to play qualifiers. But, South Africa should qualify directly (they need to win the two games against Netherlands and hope Ireland don't win 3-0 against BD).

Lanka has batted pretty decently so far , 175 with 13 balls to spare , need to finish on a strong note here

The score is not par score , the ground is small , Kiwis should bank themselves here to chase this down ,Lanka need special bowling effort to win this.

Kiwis have recovered well after two early blows , 47 after 5 overs .

Lanka need to get more wickets here.

Sri Lanka won the Super over

==

April 2 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand via a Super Over in the opening Twenty20 international on Sunday for a 1-0 lead in the three-match series as Charith Asalanka hit a half-century before guiding them home in the tie-breaker.

The tourists comfortably chased down the nine runs needed for victory in the Super Over as Asalanka smashed a six and a four off Adam Milne, after Maheesh Theekshana's tight bowling restricted New Zealand.

"It was very exciting," said man-of-the-match Asalanka. "Two teams playing very nicely, but today was our day."

Sri Lanka, who were beaten in both the preceding test and one-day international series by 2-0 margins, earlier posted a commanding 196-5 after being asked to bat with Asalanka smashing a 41-ball 67 and Kusal Perera making an unbeaten 53.

After a shaky start, the hosts rode on Daryl Mitchell's 66 and Mark Chapman's 33 before some explosive hitting by Rachin Ravindra, who blasted 26 off 13 balls, took them close to the target.

Ish Sodhi then struck a final-ball six to level the scores and set up a Super Over but New Zealand lost two wickets in the tie-breaker, which hurt their chances of putting up a strong total.

A stroll in the park as New Zealand level the series at 1-1.

141 was never going to be a challenge, but Chad Bowes and Seifert came out firing, the former set the base with a 15-ball 31 and that let Seifert to settle down, he did and then began to show his explosive range of shots - cuts, pulls, drives, sweeps, slog-sweeps, reverse sweeps, switch hits and a reverse shovel as well, leaving Sri lanka helpless as he finished with a 43-ball 79*.

The visitors didn't help themselves with some missed chances, Rajitha shelling a sitter and a couple of half-chances not taken.

It was all set-up though by Adam Milne, whose 5-wicket haul earlier in the day put his team in the driving seat.

So, we're in for a series decider in Queenstown on the 8th. Everything to play for as the tour and the New Zealand home season winds up towards a close.

Kiwis were missing most of their key players and yet they performed like this.

Impressive.

Wow, NZ C team whooped SL quite bad. Hope they don't embarrass us like the English side did.

At Sir John Davies Oval, Queenstown: Sri Lanka 182-6 (Kusal Mendis 73 off 48, Kusal Perera 33 off 21; Ben Lister 2-37 off 4) lost to Black Caps 183-6 in 19.5 overs (Tim Seifert 88 off 48, Tom Latham 31 off 23) by four wickets.

Tim Seifert starred with the bat for the second match in a row as the Black Caps beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in the third and final Twenty20 international on Saturday.

The New Zealand opener made 88 off 48 as they chased down 183 to win at Sir John Davies Oval in Queenstown and take the three-match series 2-1.

Seifert hit 10 fours and three sixes as he followed up his unbeaten innings of 79 off 43 in the second match at University of Otago Oval in Dunedin on Wednesday.

There was some late drama as three wickets fell in the final over, but Rachin Ravindra ultimately got New Zealand over the line with a ball to spare.

Kusal Mendis was dropped twice on his way to making 73 off 48 for Sri Lanka, who were sent in by Black Caps captain Tom Latham.

The second spill, by Ravindra at deep backward point, wasn't costly, as it came when he was on 68, but the first, a tougher chance to Daryl Mitchell at first slip, came when he was only on 10 off 14.

Mendis brought up his half-century off 36 balls with a six in the 12th over, but was dismissed when he hit a slower ball by Ben Lister to Ish Sodhi at short third.

The left-arm seamer finished with 2-37 from his four overs, while Adam Milne and Sodhi each took 1-30 from their four.

Kusal Perera (33 off 21), Pathum Nissanka (25 off 25) and Dhananjaya de Silva (20 off 9) all made useful contributions as Sri Lanka posted 182-6.

But the visitors only added three runs off the final over, bowled by Matt Henry, which meant the Black Caps went out to bat chasing 10 or 15 fewer runs than they might have needed otherwise.

Chad Bowes was dropped early, but ultimately fell for 17 off 18, and at the halfway stage New Zealand were 95-1, needing 88 further runs off the final 10 overs.

Latham fell for 33 off 23 in the 15th over, bowled by Maheesh Theekshana who finished with 1-22 from his four overs.

With five overs to go, the equation was 43 off 30 and that became 29 off 24 as Mitchell arrived at the crease, but there was a slight setback when Seifert fell, overreaching and hitting a slower ball to short cover.

Mark Chapman joined Daryl Mitchell and they went into the final over, bowled by Lahiru Kumara, with 10 still needed.

Chapman hit the first ball for six over deep mid-wicket, but was caught skying the next, then Jimmy Neesham was run-out after Mitchell called him through on a wide.

Mitchell then became the third man to fall in the final over, caught after skying the ball, while Sri Lanka blew a run-out of Adam Milne off the next, making the maths two off two.

That put Ravindra on strike and he didn’t mess around, hitting Lahiru through point to score the decisive runs.
