So the series rests on the final session. All 4 results possible.

From Indian POV the positives are that:
New ball is available
A short break (may unsettle Mathews just a little)
Into the tail

Btw SL have prolly the worst tail in international cricket

for a side which has a very ordinary top order you need all you can get from your tail. The new ball is due too so it might be all be over soon

Still reached 201 from a miserable 49/6 in the 1st innings. so cant say they have the worst tail.

LOL. Good way of learning the art of sledging, then #TrialAndError

This kind of behavior reminds me of constant embarrassment (to the team/captain) brought on by Sreesanth and his petulant attempt at sledging (even MSD hated it :P ) at opposition players (sometimes at his own team mates in extreme cases even umpires, have happened in IPL games)

Nothing succeeds like success. If India go on to win this series this whole "new" approach (especially in tests in comparison to Dhoni's "sit and wait" method) all of these shenanigans will be validated. Some of these guys will cop a fine after this test match.
Hopefully the lesson they will take away is that sledging fine...now how do it next time without coping a fine.
Lara used to go out of his way to pick a confrontation when batting - it strengthened his resolve

The was such a retarded shot by Perera.

The only thing which can save SL now is bad light - no chance we get the full overs in today. We'll probably see another 20-25 overs max.

This is such a good innings by Mathews though given the circumstances.

Tail against the new ball would be different I guess. If not then a SL tailender needs to open in place of Tharanga.

True but they still have matthews, who know how to play with tail. India is in the driver seat for sure!

It would be fun to end this match on a controversial note with the umps offering the last pair bad light.
reams of articles post that for a week or two basis petulant press conferences that will follow

think Kohli might explode and hit somebody if that happens lol..

Indians have beahaved appalingly in this series, the new "brash" India. More like the new moronic Jock india! i Dont remember Pakistan vs lanka being like this. Or NZ vs Eng, or even the ashes..such bad sportsmanship, they could learn from Pakistan and NZ.

Did Indians lecture on how not to bite the ball or not preaching on the cricket ground. Its brash behaviour and we don't need to learn anything from any other team but from our players from just 5 years ago like Dravid,Laxman.

The damage that the new ball has done in this match puts Pujara's knock in perspective. Negotiated 2 new balls in that innings when the pitch was at its most difficult.

Kohli pats Mathews on his back as he leaves, the dude wears his emotions on his sleeve needs to mature up.

no, no need to learn anything from others, they are looking fine in ugly moments

Ashwin with yet another wicket (20th of this series)

We are just 2 wickets away from a very special test win (series as well) at overseas.

I defn hate the the Kookaburra balls so much difference between the new and old.

then start learning since your current team has forgotten its lessons!!

IMHO, he underused the spinners and over used yadav in this test.

There hasnt been much for the spinners here and Yadav has picked up a wicket in his first spell in both the digs. Mathews was criticized for overusing spin in the first innings. I think Ashwin 2 strikes with the old ball were crucial.

Ashwin is a wicket away from having 5 wicket haul in each of the tests in a 3 test series (a record for him?)

Problem was when he was going for too many runs (in both the innings), Kohli persisted with him instead of giving bowling to spinners.

Yes he was bowling boundary balls every over but he was also bowling balls that were more threatening that the spinners. A real mixed bag.

What anti-climax in the final session. Took only 6 overs of new ball.

Toss-up between Pujara and Ishant for the MoM award. My choice is Pujara.

Was saying this all along. Have seen too many Tests over the years where a team looks like chasing down a mammoth score in the 4th innings, only for a wicket to fall & eventually collapses for much less.

If it was that easy to chase big scores on the 5th day, more teams would have done it.

Last 9 overs, SL lost five wickets. Ashwins wicket of Perera was the turning point after all.

That came totally out of nowhere. things were going so easy for SL till that time, it looked we were in for yet another heartbreak (from Indian POV). Besides these, It wasn't the best of the ball that Ashwin bowled this series, a moment of overconfidence/misjudgment(?) from Kusal brought India back into this game.

Yeah that was quite a brainfade by Perera. Our bowlers were looking absolutely clueless till then. But after that wicket and then Ishants new found new ball abilities, there was little hope for Lanka. But they still should've tried to defend IMO.

Anything other than win here would have put serious doubts on our team's abilities (bowlers in particular) and psyche of players. Thankfully it went in our favor.
