Ah these NZ new ball bowlers are really doing some damages early on these days...

NZ must make sure that they get a lead here, this is a big opportunity for them , they need to keep things tight.

What is going on!?

I've liked the look of Southee and Boult all year. They've done very well together. Bracewell can be handy when conditions suit but not quite in the same league IMO. If Astle turns out to be any good you've got a nice young attack there.

Unfortunately for him (Astle), Vettori will prolly take up spinning duties for the summer versus the Poms, so he might have to wait until he's injured again, or for the next bunch of tours were we need two spinners, or for the ODI games.

If rain doesn't interfere a lot in the next few days, NZ should be in charge with the backbone of the Lankans in the pavilion.

NZ are well on top. SL have all to do to salvage the game. Another brilliant showing by Southee and Boult with the new ball. Samaraweera hasn't done much in recent times so now is the perfect opportunity to show his worth. Matthews will also need to make a big contribution here to get the innings back on track. First priority should be to avoid the follow-on and then chip away from there. Interesting days ahead.

wonderful to see NZL do so well, hope Bracewell and the spinners contnue to keep the pressure exerted by Boult and Southee.

Southee has been a star performer for NZL since last 3-4 games now, he did well in bangalore too, if he can bowl so well in the subcontinent, he is definitely going to do serious damage in more helpful conditions, what he needs is a good new ball partner, Boult appears to be good, but it's a bit too early to judge him.

Waiting for other shoe to fall. Knowing the team, they would find a way to lose from here too.

On a surface that even New Zealand's tail made seem friendly, three of Sri Lanka's big four batsmen could not manage better than single figures, and Kane Williamson said the value of those wickets could not be understated, given the pitch remained good for batting.

New Zealand amassed 412 on the P Sara surface, thanks in the main to a 262-run partnership between Ross Taylor and Williamson, which was almost chanceless beyond the first hour of their union. In reply, however, Sri Lanka were reduced to 12 for 3 inside the first six overs of their innings, with their most experienced men in the top order all falling to New Zealand's opening bowlers.

Angelo Mathews then joined Tharanga Paranavitana at the crease and the pair survived the remaining 11.5 overs until stumps, but two boundaries that Mathews ventured in one Tim Southee over suggested the wicket had plenty more runs to give. The New Zealand bowlers also had far less assistance from the conditions than in Galle, achieving only a fraction of the movement they had showed themselves capable of gaining in the first Test.

"It's great to finish the evening the way we did, getting those three wickets," Williamson said. "I guess that makes our first innings total look a lot better, and there is a lot of pressure going on the Sri Lankan side tomorrow. "But as Mathews showed towards the end when he started playing some shots, it is still a good wicket."

Patel needs to lift his game , he needs to get more wickets and move out of shadow of vettori

SL bat deep till the last man.. We all know what Kula and Herath can do. Even Shaminda Eranga has a first class 100 under his belt."
