What's new

Starc, Pattinson, Cummins, Hazlewood - How good can this attack be if they stay fit?

Will still be beaten to all parts in a test match in UAE..

Hazelwood is the only one who worries me as a Pakistani fan. McGrath type, slightly pacier. His nagging line and length stuff will be an issue for our guys

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that they're going to form an ATG attack. I have Hazelwood nailed down as an ATG himself, while Starc and Patto can get there too if their bodies hold up.

Agreed all 4 bring something different as well
In the searing heat of Indian Summer Pattinson bowled a 149 kph delivery in his first over in a test vs India and got rid of Sehwag or Vijay.

Waqar & Shoaib have taken lots of wickets on dead pitches with pace and good record. Anybody who can consistently bowl between 142-154 kph with good control will still average between 20 - 35 on dead wickets.

Cummins is most exciting wrt Raw Pace

Yes Pattinson is very good has that nack of getting wickets hopefully he stays fit. Cummins has that extra pace could do well in Asia

Starc is only good in ODIs, Pattinson is ok in Tests, Cummins is overrated and Hazlewood has been decent so far in ODIs and Tests. Don't see them becoming a world class attack in tandem.

If Starc stays fit, he will be the best fast bowler in the world in Test cricket as well within 2-3 years.

He is already well ahead of his peers in Limited Overs.

Will do amazingly good. Starc is sheer pace. His yorkers are from hell. Hazlewood is all about line and length. Hard to get him away. Pattinson is a deadly bowler. Can bowl jaffas time to time. Cummins provides the x-factor. All in all, a well rounded and wonderful bowling attack. Be it tests or ODIs..

They'll remain good but not a great attack.

One dimensional and only suited to Au, NZ and SAF conditions.

Will be thrashed elsewhere. Hazlewood can be good in Tests.

If Starc can get reverse swing he could be dangerous

Are they fit now?

Were they all fit together at any given time in the past?

Did they ever play together? If yes, what was the result? ATG is not easy.

Still won't be better than Junaid, though.

:junaid

Yes, in bowing gun-barrel straight.

Junaid is the only pacer in the world who can make sure that he doesn't move the new ball an inch in the air, which is very difficult to achieve.

have to wait at moment for them to step in India/UAE/SL on regular basis to know how good they are .
At moment they are playing heavily in Aus/Eng/SA and been protected nicely by Cricket Australia (and for some injuries too )

Not in history but certainly in the top Aussies bowling attacks, hope they can all remain fit

On potential I think they can be. Not saying they will for sure. If they can put up massive numbers in todays game with flat wickets and heavy fat bats, it beats what yesteryears greats did on helpful tracks against batsmen who didnt even have helmets.

When u think of it like that your right they all bring something different as well

I always make sure to say "on potential" when talking about guys who are young. Some people are allergic to that term. Safe to say Pattinson and Hazelwood have proven to be world class. Others have the potential.

Pattinson has a good record so far in tests hazelwood bowls good lines and lengths but has struggled on flat decks so far

How good "can" this attack be? Amongst the very best.

But sadly they've had a lot of injuries and I highly doubt they will play a Test together.

They are all different bowlers and offer something to the team. If even 2-3 of them go on to have very successful Test careers, it will be great for Australian cricket. Plus there are more upcoming pacers in the country and they can be added into the mix as well.

"Cummins, Pattinson, Starc and Hazlewood in one side would be like the Windies of the 80s" : Lehmann

Pat Cummins could be set for an early Test return, with Australian coach Darren Lehmann tempted to take the exciting quick to India in February.

The injury-plagued 23-year-old hasn't played a Test since his sensational debut as an 18-year-old against South Africa in 2011.

But his impressive return to one-day cricket against New Zealand after a 15-month layoff has reminded Australia's selectors of his talent.

After a slow start in the series opener in Sydney, Cummins took 4-41 in Canberra on Tuesday to help Australia reclaim the Chappell-Hadlee trophy.

Cummins claimed the key wickets of Martin Guptill and captain Kane Williamson, while regularly hitting 150km/h.

Lehmann has long dreamed of having the luxury of playing Cummins and fellow injury-prone quick James Pattinson, who recently returned to grade cricket, alongside Mitch Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

And he says Cummins remains a chance of joining the Test side in India, despite having no opportunity to play in the Sheffield Shield before the tour.

"When you get someone like that who's coming back and just goes bang like that, with that performance in Canberra, you go 'wow, we just want him in'," Lehmann said on Thursday.

"So you've got to sit back and work out what the best way to go about it is.

"It's very difficult when they're young, fast bowlers but god, they're exciting to watch."

Cummins will play in Friday's final one-day international against New Zealand before turning his attention to the Big Bash League.

He is also likely to feature in January's one-day series against Pakistan before playing some form of four-day cricket, Lehmann said.

"We're slowly, slowly with him," he said.

"But it's just exciting to see. I think everyone's dream is to see Cummins, Pattinson, Starc and Hazlewood all in the one side. That would be fantastic. It would be like the West Indies of the '80s."

While the India tour may come too soon, the 2017-18 homes Ashes series is likely to present a golden opportunity for both Cummins and Pattinson to return to the Test side.

Australian selector Mark Waugh this week cautioned against rushing Cummins back too quickly, saying the the team had paid the price for doing so in the past.

"He hasn't played any four-day cricket," Waugh said.

"I think his program is Big Bash and then maybe a Shield match early next year."

Buddy Darren, you should keep low profile till the IND tour is over. That WI won 3-0 in IND (& 5-0 in ODI) ...............

Do whatever you want. Saday naal yaye masti na karee....

I've said the same thing. What a brilliant attack that would be.

Lol, don't take all four to India, please. They'll all end up on stretchers. However, yes, it would be a fearsome attack outside the subcontinent and especially at home, if the Australian pitches don't go back to becoming pancakes.

Pakistan better watch out.

I saw that 1983-84 series , only Gavaskar and Vengsarkar could bat again WI bowlers. Marshall was mostly unplayable in that series.

Holding as well - simply unplayable - and Garner didn't come. Those were the days, when you could have get away with time wasting, no make-up time for weather & no extension for slow over-rate - otherwise teams against that WI side would have drawn 1/2 Test per year max.

Hopefully Australia can tape them up and have them ready for the Ashes. Wanna see England get another 5-0 phainty.

Utter joke.
You should work on your comprehending skills. He said "like" not that Australia's attack is equivalent to WI's attack of the 80's. And I fully agree, much better than the rest of the worlds luloos (bar SA).

Comprehending what?

Starc is world class for sure, Hazlewood is decent while Cummins is the most overhyped cricketer after 1 performance.
Pattinson as well due to his one series against a aging Indian side.

Both Cummins and Pattinson are not only injury prone but overhyped to jupiter.

Still remember the clown Pattinson saying he wanted to extract revenge on the Poms for what they did to his brother... revenge as in get smacked around and then getting injured.

Pace like fire Cummins who at best is as fast as Dirk Nannes and even easier to get smacked out of the park.
Cummins is no Brett Lee.

Even if they field those 4 in one attack, they are just asking for the Emergency services to be on standby at all times when inevitably one of them breaks down.

ITs a very good pace attack no doubt, but nothing compared to the WI attack of the 80's.

Poor man's Ambrose, a one trick pony and 2 gun barrel straight bowling machines made of Teflon.

Sure I'm exaggerating but you get the idea?

What was Cummins Average Speed and Fastest Ball in last Odi ?

As per CI Fastest was 148.5.

Anynody who saw his first 5 overs ?

Glenn McGrath strongly believes this Australian fast-bowler is still not ready for Tests

Australian fast-bowling legend Glenn McGrath believes the selectors have made a correct decision in not opting to rush Pat Cummins back for the first Pakistan Test at Gabba, saying he is looking 'pretty good' in ODIs but still needs a bit of foundation to play the longest version of the game.

Cummins, who clinched his career-best figures of 4/41 against New Zealand in the second one-day international in Canberra this week, was in the minds of many a probable candidate for the first Test against the Misbah-ul-Haq-led side.

However, the Australian selectors named the same squad that won them the Adelaide Test against South Africa for the Gabba Test, starting December 15. "I'll put him in the Gabba side right now," former Test quick Brendon Julian said. "The Test match starts on the 15th, it's a day-nighter against Pakistan. He's not going to be bowling a lot of overs, it's not going to be hot. I reckon they'll be getting him in there. Could you imagine him bowling against Pakistan in a day-nighter'' he added.

However, McGrath feels Cummins needs more time to build his body for the rigours of Test match cricket. "I think in the shorter version of the game, which is pretty much what he's played, he can hold his action together and he's looking pretty good," McGrath told news.com.au. "To me, the true test will be how he goes in the longer version and how he goes coming back bowling later in a second spell or third spell, when he's a little bit tired, a little bit fatigued. You can't just go into a game and bowl forty overs, without having a bit of foundation there,' he added.

The Gabba Test will be followed by games at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (December 26-30) and the Sydney Cricket Ground (January 3-7, 2017).

Starc and Hazelwood looking a good combo, imagine adding a fully fit Pattinson and Cummins to the attack.

World Class.

These are extra ordinary talents. In fact I always felt that Starc was always the lesser of the three ( Starcm Pattinson, Cummins) yet he was the one who managed to stay fit and get better. Starc is now one of the better ones in the limited overs arena.

Pattinson might not be as good as he used to with his new action, but Cummins is still special. IF only he could stay fit for more than a month. Hazlewood has already shown to be very mature despite his age.

Cummins is fit now, don't you think he can stay fit?

Pattinson is hardly mentioned atm.

Pattinson relies too much on contraction to extract pace instead of driving through the crease.

Cummins is just too fragile and torques his torso in a quick snap which is always going to lead to side strains and lower back injuries.

It would make them almost as good as SA's;

Steyn, Philander, Abbott & Rabada

But not as good.

Perhaps the best in the world ahead of current SA crop as Steyn won't last too long.

Cummins and Pattinson are far too injury prone to play test cricket. But I think Starc and Hazlewood will do fine everywhere.

They can definitely become on of the best bowling attacks of all-time, especially if Mitchell Marsh acts as the fifth, holding bowler. It'll be like the 70s and 80s all over again.

I have no faith in either Pattinson or Cummins to be honest

Queensland have a young lad I've heard some nice things about. Xavier Bartlett

But imo there are a few guys that can be a good third quick if needed. Jackson Bird isn't as talented as Hazlewood and Starc but he complements the attack well. I rate Simon Mackin highly and imo Mitch Marsh is very underrated as a bowler (particularly by Smith).

Xavier Bartlett is rubbish, decent with new ball but utterly futile once the ball loses it's shine.

Not to mention he doesn't have the pace to play as a front line seamer.

Might be difficult to play all 4 in the same team but imagine at least 3 of them in the same team.

Cummins showing his talent .

Right up there with Steyn, Morkel, and Philander in their prime.

Hope we get to see it at least once.

So hard to tell who is the best between them quality wise (leaving injuries aside).

In Australia I see no need to play Nathan Lyon except at the SCG.

1 Warner
2 Renshaw
3 Khawaja
4 Smith
5 Handscomb
6 Maxwell
7 Whiteman
8 Starc
9 Cummins
10 Pattinson
11 Hazlewood

Maxwell has hardly bowled. Don't see him playing as a specialist spinner in tests.

I remember when they started their careers Pattinson and Cummins were rated more highly than Starc. Too bad we couldnt see more of them due to injuries.

Will we get to see all four of them in Ashes this year?

5 tests and if all four are fit enough then it would be a fun to watch.

We're not going to go into any tests in Australia with four specialist quicks.
