What's new

Starc, Pattinson, Cummins, Hazlewood - How good can this attack be if they stay fit?

What a return by Cummins.

It certainly would be a frightening prospect but I don't think they'll ever play a Test together.

Cricket has changed a lot. Playing conditions are not what these were in 80s. And attitude of batsmen is much different. I can't see a Pace Quartet in Tests for next decade.

Occasionally may be in one off ODI with smaller boundaries there is a role for Pace Quartet but a huge tactical risk in Tests.

Having said that, together, even 3 of these 4 are good enough to take 20 wickets in 6 sessions 7 times out of 10.

If fit , an extremely potent attack. All are tall, very young and express, except Hazelwood, who is lively and the most consistent one.

Awesome and well-balanced attack but the issue is can they stay fit. When one gets fit another gets injured.

Aussie pace quartet to prove pivotal in Ashes, claims Lee

MUMBAI: Australia’s pace attack, emboldened by the return of “once in a generation” bowler Pat Cummins, could prove the difference between the sides in this year’s Ashes series against England, former paceman Brett Lee told Reuters.

Steve Smith’s side already boasts tearaway paceman Mitchell Starc along with the precision of Josh Hazlewood.

Cummins returned to Test cricket in India after more than five years in the wilderness, replacing injured spearhead Starc and taking eight wickets from the final two matches in Ranchi and Dharamsala.
His successful comeback has only bolstered Australia’s already formidable pace resources.

“What Pat Cummins can bring is pace, aggression, control and anything between that. He is a once in a generation bowler and you have got to harness that amazing talent,” said Lee in an interview at a Mumbai hotel overlooking the Arabian Sea.

The 23-year-old right-armer showed good control and generated enough pace even on the docile surfaces in India to trouble the hosts’ batsmen.

James Pattinson has also been in stellar form in domestic cricket since returning from a 12-month injury layoff in February and the 26-year-old could complete a dream pace quartet for the five-match Ashes series starting in November.

Lee, an ambassador for Bowling Master, said he would struggle to summon the courage to face such a pace battery.

“I would be [scared], absolutely,” said Lee after launching the cricket training kit which will be sold on Amazon’s India portal. “It’s a pretty serious pace barrage that you’ve got. Australian bowling stocks now are pretty healthy.

“Hazlewood is more of hitting the good length, day in and day out. With Starc you will be full, short, good length, yorkers, the whole thing. Two completely different bowlers but complementing each other because they are building pressure from each end.

“Then you throw in someone like a Pat Cummins. It’s a pretty handy attack.”

Less than six months ago, Australia were still reeling from their 3-0 whitewash in Sri Lanka when they were beaten in the home series by South Africa with a match to spare.

The axe fell on some players and a revamped side gained a consolation win at Adelaide Oval before going on to blank Pakistan 3-0 in the following series.

They impressed one and all in India, going down 2-1 after a closely-fought four-match series against the world’s top ranked Test side.

Lee said Smith now had the players to build a team around for the long-term. “After [former captain] Michael Clarke, you got Steve Smith taking over, and I think he’s building his own team, which is a terrific team,” said the 40-year-old.

“It’s a team that are very close and a team that’s going to be around for a long time now. You have got some young guys coming. [Matt] Renshaw is just 21 years old. [Peter] Handscomb has come on and just taken to Test cricket like a duck to water.

“You throw in Pat Cummins, he’s back in the mix after five and half years in absence of not playing Test cricket. You got some people that are injecting in some youth, some experience. Australia is in a very good spot.”

Lee was also looking forward to seeing how Joe Root, who replaced long-serving Alastair Cook as Test captain, would lead England Down Under. “He’s a class act … His stats back it up and proved that he is such an amazing talent,” said Lee.

“He’s ranked among the top four-five batsmen in the world. And you throw in the captaincy with that. I am actually looking forward to seeing how he goes on the Australian wickets.”

Has the potential to be the best quartet ever. Factor in pitch conditions and bat quality, they might rank higher than Garner-Roberts-Holding-Croft even.

James Pattinson stars again for Nottinghamshire

NOTTINGHAM: Australian paceman James Pattinson has continued his strong pre-Ashes form with three top-order wickets for Nottinghamshire against Kent in England's County Championship.

Pattinson removed South African Sean Dickson and Englishmen Joe Denly and Sam Northeast for ducks as Nottinghamshire dismissed Kent for 180 inside two sessions on day one at Trent Bridge.

Pattinson finished with 3-30 on Monday, claiming his wickets in the space of eight deliveries to leave the visitors 3-6 early.

The Victorian has taken 31 wickets from five matches this county season at an average of 10.45.

Nottingham, the county competition's unbeaten division two leader, were 3-135 in reply at stumps on Monday.

Pattinson's performance against Kent follows an eight-wicket match haul against Leicestershire last week.

The 27-year-old will join Australia in August for the two-Test tour of Bangladesh.

He is set to play his first match since February 2016 after spearhead Mitchell Starc was not selected for the tour due to injury.

Really hope to see them play at least a test each; against South Africa next year and in the Ashes before that. England and South Africa are tough to bat in, in tests, at least occasionally even now.

Can't believe he's 27 now and still seems to have hardly started his career- just cameos between injury.

The attack named in this thread will remain a "dream" attack- they'll never play more than 2 series together over their careers at a maximum.

But having any 3 on deck at any one time will make for a fearsome attack with good variety any which way you stack them. Hazlewood & Starc have proven themselves with the red ball to some extent, but none have yet really lived up to their potential. It's like having 4 Bruce Reids or Mohammad Zahids emerge at the same time- tantalising but never quite getting it together.

Australia has never had more fast bowling depth.

On potential, the current attack has the ability to surpass whatever is considered Australia's best.

Looks like Pattinson won't be apart of the attack. Cummins,Starc, and Hazelwood is a scary attack. Hopefully they stay fit.

Starc, Cummins, Hazelwood and Lyon plus Mitch Marsh will be a good combination.

Yes, and unlike 80s captains won't be allowed to get away with bowling 75-80 overs in a day on regular basis.

Australia attack ovverated eh [MENTION=131701]Mamoon[/MENTION]? Only one team looks ovverated right now. :root

we will be losing both tests in three days later this year. ecstatic to be proven wrong.

I saw nothing special in Australia’s bowling yesterday. All the dismissals were self-inflicted by indisciplined batting. They kept slashing at wide deliveries with planted feet.

I have to say this with great disgust that even a team like Pakistan would have scored 300 here, effectively batting Australia out of the game.

be careful abt the words u use for pakistan .. or any country for tht matter ....

Its a solid attack. But they have to be injury-free to make a long term career for themselves.

Cummins
Pattinson
Hazlewood
Starc

But they will need break to come good. Hazlewood looked awful some time ago. He has come back fresh in this series. Same has been done with Starc now.

Great analysis.

Your batting held up well last time you toured Down under. It's the bowling I'd be concerned about. Cannot have medium fast bowlers and Yasir Shah in Australia. It's a recipe for disaster with Warner cantering to a hundred in the very first session.

Yes when it's a team not named India and England, it's never nothing special.

We had the highest batting aggregates for well over 20 years of touring Australia, but our we lost the series when we were dismissed in a session and half in Melbourne. Agree regarding bowling.
