Great chance for England to win the third test. Smith is the difference between the two sides. The rest of the Australia batting looks fragile so England should really be able to bowl Australia out much cheaper. As long as their batting clicks then England should win the next test

So Jofra has single handedly won them the next test.
Great news for England. Hope it's nothing serious though.

Steve Smith to miss third Ashes Test

Australia batting mainstay Steve Smith has been ruled out of the third Ashes Test at Headingley as he continues his recovery from concussion sustained during the previous Test.

The Australia batsman suffered a delayed concussion in the second Test between England and Australia at Lord’s last week, having been struck on the neck by a Jofra Archer delivery.

Smith was forced to retire hurt while unbeaten on 80 in Australia’s first innings on day four, but later returned to the crease having been cleared by medical staff. He was eventually dismissed for 92. It was his lowest score of the series, following on from the two centuries he hit at Edgbaston in the first Test.

The following morning, Smith woke up with a headache and was replaced by Marnus Labuschagne, marking the first instance of a concussion substitution in international cricket.

Labuschagne impressed in his maiden Ashes innings, recovering from a blow to the helmet from Archer early in his innings to go on and hit 59.

Cricket Australia stated after Smith was ruled out of the remainder of the Lord's Test that "the short turnaround to the next Test is not in his favour".

does seem to have a weakness against the short ball.. almost got hit in each innings on the head...

something other teams will be looking at .... interesting to see how he covers this out ...

Massive blow for the Aussies. I don't think they can win a Test in England without Smith.

really a curious situation.Jofra has given some serious ammunition to the rest of the cricketing world w.r.t countering Smith moving forward.

Sorry to say but archer needs to improve after labuschagne got hit on helmet he seemed very comfortable against him and australians are good against pace and bounce they will work him out

Is the injury very serious

Damn, Archer has taken over AKhtar in terms of pace bowling

Why was he not wearing the protectors under the helmet like others do after Phil Hughes incident?

Lol you are acting as if Archer is the first bowler ever to bowl a bouncer to smith.

It was just a combination of good pace, perfect short length and Smith misjudgement which led to this. Such hostile bowling isn’t easy to recreate. And Smith wasn’t wearing extra protection either

The wicket was 2 paced with variable bounce, a bowler of archers pace was always going to be very tricky to handle on that kind of surface, if the wicket was true with normal bounce I believe Smith would have no issues, remember he did get 92

Starc and Pattinson come in then they could match fire with fire as England batting also very weak

bolded part.... it is all that is very important. I don't think Smith with his weird technique is equipped to counter such deliveries. All he can do is bent backwards rather than duck under such bouncers.Bastmen with better techniques would duck under the ball in such situations.

Well that was a 2 paced surface with variable bounce, not easy to deal with short pitch bowling at all, some were climbing some werent

Fastest deck in England next. Like Oval used to be. Good bowlers will get wickets, good batters will get runs, everyone else will get exposed.

Absolutely, normally a true deck is easier to bat on than a wicket which has variable bounce and being 2 paced

Australia would like to rely on their pace battery for this match. Get in Pattinson back with Cummins, Lyon and Hazlewood. But who will score runs?? That's the problem for Australia.

might had been..... yet , Smith with this weird stance at the crease when the bowler is about to release the ball would find it much difficult
than normal when pitted with short pitch stuff even if the pitch is easy paced. So let us wait and see moving forward...Jofra has created the template for sure.

Big blow for Australia. Better to be safe than sorry. Sure he will be okay for the next game.

The only test England will have a chance at winning now unless Warner finds some form and goes ballistic.

That's a massive blow for Australia. Without Smith their batting is non-existent.

I think England knows that the third test is theirs.

IF Smith misses out on the last two tests as well then Archer already has won the Ashes for the English.

Write Australia off at your own peril, someone will stand up in Smith's absence, and this England side are not exactly a gun side

Hope Aussies play Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins and Pattinson. Reinvigorate past glories and memories, reminiscent of the brutal West Indians foursome in the 80's.

I am salivating over the fact that there is distinct possibility that they could all feature in the same test as each other.

The only way to make it happen is to drop Bancroft and open with Khawaja/Wade and bat Pattinson/Cummins at 7.

Australia To Win Easily. Aussies have too many cards in their stack. One of them will stand up on the given day. Labuschagne did that in lord tests. Australia needs to drop Bancroft already & get handscomb in.

That's not good, this series have been amazing so far and competitive. Smith would be a big loss, hopefully someone else steps up and we get a great game of cricket.

On side note, Archer is slowly becoming my favourite bowler. Good for cricket.

How big an impact will his absence make to the outcome of the 3rd Test?
