What's new

Why Steve Smith is still the undisputed second greatest Test batter of all time?

What's the Zimbabwe is a goat team nonsense?

Zimbabwe of the old are better then today but they still suck lol. And joe root nor Steve smith have played against much minnows to begin with.

Throughout their career they have faced superior attacks to any era Zimbabwe lol.

I cant stop laughing..according to India, zimbabwe was not a minnow loooll
Zimbabwe was never not a minnow. They were always a crap side that had at best one or 2 purple patch moments.

Their old side is > their current era side but its irrelevant.

People need to stop underestimating root and smith. Ironically their favourite team to bash has been India lol. Current India > Any era Zimbabwe.

Root and Smith have hardly played vs Zimbabwe, if they did their avg would be 60+ by now. Infact root and smith have hardly played vs Minnows to begin with.

These guys will go to any extent to justify their lunacy.
I still cant stop laughing that indians see Zimbabwe amongst a top cricket nation.

It's because @Narayana59 exposed 3 key stats.

No 1, bowling in this era is easier in test hence lower economy and lower rates of draws while batting is harder. Shahid Afridi a tulla avg 37 in test cricket in Sachin era lol.

No 2, Sachin avg 51 excluding minnows bashing, which is the same as root avg 51. Infact root avg 53 vs Non minnows and his 51 avg is due to those rubbish industrial fan tests vs Pakistan and Bangladesh.

No 3 Steve Smith has avg 57+ in 74 out of his 119 tests as compared to sachin avg 9x. Sachin avg 9x, but 6 of them were vs zimb and Bangladesh lol, while all 74 of smith's avg were achieved against england, nz, aus, sa, india, Pakistan, Wi, Sri Lanka.

The only team Steve smith failed was vs Bangladesh on doctored industrial fan pitches.

Chalo jee zimbabwe was not a minnow for india

So that means they were not a minnow. Zimbabwe beat Australia in wt20 2007, does that mean they were not minnow in 2007

Zimbabwe in the 90's wasn't a full-blown minnow. They were a solid #9 team.

They beat South Africa and India in 1999 WC, beat Pakistan in a Test series, beat NZ in an ODI series, and gave India a good fight in India.

Hold up, did someone actually claim that Tendulkar scored a century at Perth and WACA?

Perth Stadium opened up in 2018 so did he somehow time travel and score a century there?
He scored one at WACA on a difficult pitch.

Optus Stadium opened after his retirement.

Even though I want Australia to win Ashes. I still want root to score 517 runs.

I respect root as much as Steve Smith respects root. Both of these 2 dare I say are my favourite test players of all time.

For me my favourites are

1) Steve Smith
2) Ricky Ponting
3) Joe Root
4) Brian Lara
5) Younis Khan

In that specific order. I absolutely lobe watching these guys bat and I still havent forgotten the 750 run onslaught by Steve smith in Ashes.

Nothing would make me happier for Smith to tonk 700+ runs in Ashes and root to tonk 500+ runs in Ashes.

These 2 are terrific players and im glad both of them have the utmost respect for each other despite clueless Indians making propaganda claiming no aussie player wants root to succeed 🤣🤣.

I genuinely have a question, why do indians even go overseas if they are to perpetually remain as uneducated about the foreign world as they were back in India?

Steve Smith is the goat. He is no 2, end of story.

If only Tendulkar could win games rather then stat padding vs Bangladesh. Ultimate stat padder tenda :vk2

Root will make runs, I have the feeling
I think he will as well. 2021 Root =/= 2025 Root.

Root has been avg 58 post covid. These 6 years he's reinvented himself. He gets way too much hate from the 🤡 gang on this form aka the 11 guilty parties.

But he is a terrific batsmen only plagued by an earlier record where he use to avg 42 early on in his career.

Root is the best test batter in the world atm, and even now his Prime is on par with Ponting and Lara in their primes and slightly > Sachin.

His current prime is below Steve Smith however who avg 66 and was dominating everyone.

Currently he is > Current smith after smith fell off.

2 more series to go,

This will be way more impressive than Sachin considering the fact that Steve Smith is maintaining these numbers without zimbabwe and Bangladesh.

Sachin without zimbabwe and Bangladesh managed to maintain 55+ AVG for only 49/200 matches .

Smith has been a legendary player in red ball... The best of this era for sure..

Greatest test batsman of this era.

Bumrah and Siraj have his number though. Averages 30ish in matches where Bumrah played.

Man with 100 differnet techniques. Wont' travel miles to watch him bat. But will bet my house on him in crunch situation. Amazing cricketing brain. He is a better captain than Cummins. But i understand why he is not a regular captain.

wood, rabada, and a few others have gotten him out a few times too, given how much hes played a few cheap dismissals against certain bowlers doesnt really mean much tbh. you could find bowlers like that for every player. if u get 10+ dismissals against someone like broad did with warner, or starc with stokes, then u can say someone has someones number.

It was always going to be very difficult to maintain the 60 batting average. Think Sobers is still ahead of him.

Bradman is no.1.

If we are talking purely test cricket, it will be Smith at 2.

If we are talking all formats, Tendulkar will be no.2.

For Asian fans, all formats usually matter while for SENA fans, test cricket mostly matters.

In terms of technique, Williamson is better than Smith. That's right.

But, Smith has achieved more than Williamson.
agreed.... smith scores ugly runs due to his unusual technique but the thing that matters is runs and Smith has that... Kane might look classy but he is not close to smith here.

Yeah. Smith had a very good hand eye coordination which made up for his horrible techniques.

Anyway, Smith is no longer as effective as before. Age is catching up perhaps.

Smith can go down if he continues like this for a couple of years.
His record won’t be distinguishable from other greats at this rate.

For me the Best since bradman...irespective of whatever tally of runs joe root ends up with....

any pitch, any condition this guy will find a way to score and prosper.

- for me his best innings was the 100 at Poona 2017 against us, vs Ash and jadz at their peak. That pitch was an pathetic spin grenade (hoping as an indian we never see such pitches in the future) and to score a 100 there was true skill, eye hand co- ordination, he played late and on several occasions guided the ball out of the keeper's gloves, kept the ball on the ground, found the gaps, his footwork was electric - that innings has to be one of the ATG innings played in the history of the game.
i doubt if Sachin, virat or any of our home grown batsmen who are accustomed to spin can ever play an innings of that quality on that pitch...
Skills - this guys has SkillMaxUltra....has everything and should retire IMHO as the 2nd best after Sir D G B....

Surely, he has great hand eye coordination. Speaking of age, he is still doing very well in the ongoing Ashes. BTW, he is 36 which is not very old for a batter.

36 is old. Many players retire at that age. :inti

But, he is good enough to do well even at this age I guess.
