Suggest a modern day Pakistan ODI team

Hypothetically which players would you include in your team?

criteria : you cannot include Sarfaraz, Azhar, hafeez, Malik and Amir.

Before people jump on to me saying why i am dropping sarfaraz and all, i am not. We know these guys cannot be dropped but admittedly they are failing to play the modern game so just need to which better options these players are keeping out. The hardest call was to exclude Amir but he is just proving to be a nothing bowler.

So what are the options :

He failed in previous, let me think, maybe 15 games i guess? And at the number where he bats, yes he has failed to play the modern game in more than 70% of matches.

This is a hypothetical team anyways. Sarfaraz can play an anchor's role in the top order but babar and haris would do it better, they are younger and more talented, have a wider array of strokes. Hence i thought an explosive wicket keeper can replace Sarfaraz thats why i put it in the criteria.

This tells me that there is no good young wicket keeper batsman in Pakistan and that there is no one in Pakistan who can replace Amir as a LOI bowler.

Sad state of affairs because it means Pakistan is far far away from becoming an explosive LOI outfit.

Fakhar is the only modern day batsman we have. Hopefully Amin and him can make a good partnership. Excited about Talat... he is good at nudging it around and also finding the boundary.

Mostly what Pakistan needs to do is keep hitters at top to bat free and accumulators in the middle to consolidate if there's a collapse. This line-up has enough bowling, lot of depth in batting.

Pakistan's problems are mainly strategic and based on whether/when their batsman decide that they will just keep tuk-tuking. If that is avoided the team is basically very good.

Need Amir's new ball partner - Hasan is best used as first change. Also, in that midget bowling line-up, you need one to push batsmen on back foot. It's a big concern if combined height of BD pacers are more than PAK pacers. Sadaf could have been another one, guy is winning every individual bowling trophies in domestics, but I guess there is something more in the story - honest or corrupt, I don't know.

Besides, I was listening from Aussie commies during U19 tour - kid didn't grow from his U16 days, which actually gives me the clue I needed. Gavaskar wrote in Idols, that from 1971 tour to 1974 tour, Imran grew by couple of inches - hence guy became ranked one pacer at official 35, after 2 years of injury. It's now or never for the kid - he won't learn anything additional from bashing QeA batsmen, half of them don't have fundamental batting technique. Besides, he isn't a baby you know - Aaquib, Waquar, Ata, ARazzak, Nazir ..... all were "younger" than him at debut .... and retired before age Khan became no. 1 - I tend to put SSA in Waquar/Aaquib's group than Imran/Akram's group.

I don't have enough faith in these players that they can replicate that against bowlers of the pedigree of like Starc, Boult, Rabada, Cummins etc.

In order to compete with the best teams in the world, Pakistan need batsmen who can average 40+ at a SR of 90 against the best teams in the world, and not just be lions against SL and WI in the UAE like Babar, Hafeez, Malik etc.

I don't see that caliber in our young batsmen because the gulf in our domestic cricket and international is too big, and that is why I don't believe that a modern day Pakistan LOI team exists that can take on the world class teams.

Post Champions Trophy, the myth that anything above 250 is good enough for our bowlers to defend was peddled around frequently, but it only took a few months for it to shatter into pieces.

Fakhar Zaman averaged 50+ at a 90SR in domestics and so far he has almost replicated this at international level over a decent number of games.

Can drop the 3rd pacer (or Fahim) and play one of Amin or Saud to push the order one slot down from 3, but this is more balanced. Batsmen has to take responsibility and play for the team - this team has very good depth, which needs to be factored by top order. In NZ, PAK's start was like 40-5, 39-3, 16-6, 11-2 ....... 11 batsmen won't work with that start.

Talat is good, can be great and he can bowl medium pace - if he can improve bowling a little, easily can play as 4th pacer over Fahim, which'll allow to slot one more batsman - Saud, who is bowling well also. But, he won't be of any use if he has to wait for April 2023 - in the mean time Basit Alis get their magic hand on him .......

Can drop the 3rd pacer (or Fahim) and play one of Amin or Saud to push the order one slot down from 3, but this is more balanced. Batsmen has to take responsibility and play for the team - this team has very good depth, which needs to be factored by top order. In NZ, PAK's start was like 40-5, 39-3, 16-6, 11-2 ....... 11 batsmen won't work with that start.

Talat is good, can be great and he can bowl medium pace - if he can improve bowling a little, easily can play as 4th pacer over Fahim, which'll allow to slot one more batsman - Saud, who is bowling well also. But, he won't be of any use if he has to wait for April 2023 - in the mean time Basit Alis get their magic hand on him .......

Fakhar Zaman averaged 50+ at a 90SR in domestics and so far he has almost replicated this at international level over a decent number of games.

But of course, it’s a fluke bro.

He will not sustain that average the more he plays against the top teams. He will most probably end up with an average of 35, he is not good enough to sustain an average of 50. There are many flaws in his game.

Those numbers would put him in the category of openers like Warner and de Kock. He is nowhere near that league.

Hypothetically which players would you include in your team?

criteria : you cannot include Sarfaraz, Azhar, hafeez, Malik and Amir.

Before people jump on to me saying why i am dropping sarfaraz and all, i am not. We know these guys cannot be dropped but admittedly they are failing to play the modern game so just need to which better options these players are keeping out. The hardest call was to exclude Amir but he is just proving to be a nothing bowler.

Sarfraz is actually the only batsman who plays anything close to the modern game. SR of 110 in the last ODI, and has consistently been the fastest scoring Pakistani batsman for several years, faster than Ukmal or Hafeez. But he is a middle order batsman, not a finisher.

1) If Sarfaraz Ahmed takes one for the team and starts opening, he'll be a national hero in my eyes, at least. Our team is severely unbalanced if Sarfaraz plays anywhere else because he is not a finisher and not a better middle-order batsman than the other available options. He doesn't have to be an Amla to open for Pakistan, an average of around 35-38 at a SR of 82-85 is more than enough and better than anything out regular openers are doing (Fakhar included).

2) The batting strategy will be for Fakhar and Sarfaraz to bat out the first 15 overs at least, with a RR of around 5. Thereafter, the middle order comes into the picture and with enough big partnerships from one of the openers, Babar, Haris and Talat, the stage will be set for Sohaib Maqsood and Fahim Ashraf to finish the innings off in style. Shadab, Amir and Hasan are a pretty safe insurance policy if things go wrong at any stage that is not a full-blown, 30-6 collapse.

3) The bowling strategy is simple but verg effective. Amir and Junaid to do damage first up, Hasan to come in first change and set the fox among the chickens, Shadab to switch from an attacking role to a defending one depending on what the pitch is like and Fahim and Haris to fill out the fifth bowler's quota. At the death, Junaid and Hasan should be deadly, with Amir finishing his quota just before those two begin.

4) Such a team will at least make it to the semi-finals of the next World Cup. InshAllah. Most of the pieces are alreadg in place so the selectors need to keep up the good work and make the last three of four changes.

5) Alternatives can be dropping Talat and bringing in Sahibzada Farhan, with Sarfaraz batting at five. Some people might prefer Rumman over Junaid and Imad over Shadab. We can also have Malik in the mix given his vast experience and great performances in 2017.

His biggest problem is that he himself thinks he is a bowler first. That should tell you something about the coaches in Pakistan at grass root level. Surely somebody should have told him in so many years that his real talent is batting.
