I think srilankan cricket team is going back to minnow level, it's just a matter of time that they will slip behind west indies in odi and Tests ....
There bowling is ordinary and batting is not clicking enough,
any suggestion for over all improvement..??

We will love to see strong Srilankan cricket team.

Remove political interference from the Board. The Sports Minister should not be involved in selection matters.

Reform the domestic structure by introducing a smaller, provincial-based FC tournament which SLC have promised for years but not delivered.

Kick out players who don't meet fitness standards and insert fitness clauses in central contracts.

Invest in grassroots coaching and pitch preparation - too many spin-friendly pitches are being made in SL.

Sri Lanka has players that can be world-class and match-winners but I am not sure if they have the right setup to reach the potential and become competitive again.

SL need a world class coaching staff that is given complete autonomy. But also to keep producing world-class players SL need to fix their domestic setup. You don't always get a Murali or Sangakkara.

Most importantly 14 team domestic is overkill they need 6 teams and that's it for domestic, more importantly work ethics need to be given priority, of course politics is an issue, but u can't take politics out of Asian Cricket.

This alone should be enough for SL. Let their Cricket pundits take care of their cricket. They have Mahela, Sangga, Sanath, Ranatunga's to base their cricket on.

They've got idiots running the team. That needs to be improved. There's a lot of potential in the current crop more so than the previous one where it was just Sanga and Mahela carrying the team.

Somehow get the players to perform.

Chandimal for example has been playing for ages but his performance is woeful. His strike rate is around the 60s usually. You can't win matches if top order Batsman plays so slowly

Traditionally the more successful teams from subcontinent notably India and Pakistan have a certain consistent pedigree to them, India batting and Pakistan bowling. This has remained constant over the years even in the worst cricketing phases for these nations.

The problem with Sri Lanka is that this pedigree in either of the departments is absent. They have had some amazing individual talents but the culture has not really developed. They had Murali & Vaas but and now Herath but you've to think really long and hard to think any other notable bowler. I mean the Zoysa's, Ratnayake's, and Dilhara Fernando's were never really good enough to carry the bowling. The same goes for batting where a few greats have overseen mostly very average players. De Silva, Sanga, Jayasuria, and Jayawardene aside, there's hardly a really well-known Sri Lankan batsman.

The problem with them now is that they are short of a talisman - a genuine leader in field who can raise the standard of their overall play. Malinga can't be one as he is too old to lead, neither Mathews who remains a peripheral figure, and from the evidence so far definitely not Chandimal.

They need someone who can help them rally around and hide the average performers at the world stage. They are not as bad as India is making them look but they are also not really good enough to compete. Come the UAE tour and they will be able to show improved performances. India just has become a way too professional for Asian teams and they can make them look absolutely terrible.

Sri Lanka have more talent than most countries playing cricket. The fact that so many match-winners have emerged over the past decade (only to fade away later on...) is proof to the fact that talent is in abundance and only needs to be garnered properly, and once identified, these players need to be kept under scrutiny.

If you look at their batting:
- Kusal Mendis
- Kusal Perera
- Dickwella
- Gunathilaka

These are all good, young batsmen who - from what I've seen of them - are supremely talented. Now Sri Lankan cricket needs to take care of them properly.

1) First of all, it needs to be made sure that cricketers are working hard and have amazing fitness levels in order to avoid injuries because as we've seen over the recent years, one of the major problems for Sri Lankan cricket has been their mainstays getting injured and replaced.

2) Secondly, Sri Lanka need to appoint a good, STABLE and young captain ASAP! I don't know what they when they appointed a specialist batsman who averages 20 over the course of a 100 games as captain. Mathews is clearly not fit enough for the role, Malinga needs to be thrown out of the team, let alone be given captaincy! And Chandimal, Thiramane aren't able to justify their position in the team so they can't be captain either.

I would suggest that Kusal Mendis be appointed captain. Not only is he a matured cricketer now, but he will be to Sri Lanka what Sarfraz Ahmed was to Pakistan. A good, aggressive cricketer with a never-say-die attitude.

3) GET RID OFF DEAD-WEIGHT ASAP! I think its pretty clear that Sri Lanka needs to stop trying to polish old metal because its never going to become new again. There's no point in playing Malinga, Thisara Perera, Kulasekra, Kapugedra and Tharanga anymore. They must be dropped. And if Chandimal, Thiramane and even Mathews can't get their fitness levels, performances and strike rates up to notch, then they must suffer the same fate.

I think Sri Lanka can form a pretty decent XI from the players they have even if they drop the useless, non-performing vets.

I like their batsmen actually, They need to persist with right players.

Past it players should be removed, Their morale also seems low.

If I do remember correctly, SL used to be the best Asian fielding side but now their fitness levels are atrocious. They need to do the same thing as what Pak are doing with regards to fitness and be really strict with it. Also they've had too many spin bowling allrounders that are extremely ordinary and are just not good enough. Their batting can shape up nicely with good fast scoring players but their bowling needs a complete overhaul, they should stick with Danajaya since he can bowl both Offbreaks and legbreaks. Matthews needs to bat at number 3 I think and should take full responsibility with being the backbone of the batting lineup. Malinga can be lethal again if his fitness levels are good again.

They have sme young batters who have potential, they should be give a lon run in the team. I think they need to improve pitches and coaching at grassroots level.

Don't select a new guya match and then drop him and bring in another new guy and repeat the same. Wonder how many will debut against Pakistan.

Don't think the Sri Lankan players and officials have any lofty goals for the side. The side itself is bereft of many super star players
