Sri Lanka have more talent than most countries playing cricket. The fact that so many match-winners have emerged over the past decade (only to fade away later on...) is proof to the fact that talent is in abundance and only needs to be garnered properly, and once identified, these players need to be kept under scrutiny.
If you look at their batting:
- Kusal Mendis
- Kusal Perera
- Dickwella
- Gunathilaka
These are all good, young batsmen who - from what I've seen of them - are supremely talented. Now Sri Lankan cricket needs to take care of them properly.
1) First of all, it needs to be made sure that cricketers are working hard and have amazing fitness levels in order to avoid injuries because as we've seen over the recent years, one of the major problems for Sri Lankan cricket has been their mainstays getting injured and replaced.
2) Secondly, Sri Lanka need to appoint a good, STABLE and young captain ASAP! I don't know what they when they appointed a specialist batsman who averages 20 over the course of a 100 games as captain. Mathews is clearly not fit enough for the role, Malinga needs to be thrown out of the team, let alone be given captaincy! And Chandimal, Thiramane aren't able to justify their position in the team so they can't be captain either.
I would suggest that Kusal Mendis be appointed captain. Not only is he a matured cricketer now, but he will be to Sri Lanka what Sarfraz Ahmed was to Pakistan. A good, aggressive cricketer with a never-say-die attitude.
3) GET RID OFF DEAD-WEIGHT ASAP! I think its pretty clear that Sri Lanka needs to stop trying to polish old metal because its never going to become new again. There's no point in playing Malinga, Thisara Perera, Kulasekra, Kapugedra and Tharanga anymore. They must be dropped. And if Chandimal, Thiramane and even Mathews can't get their fitness levels, performances and strike rates up to notch, then they must suffer the same fate.
I think Sri Lanka can form a pretty decent XI from the players they have even if they drop the useless, non-performing vets.
