Dean Smith has been rewarded for flying out to Egypt during the African Cup of Nations to personally run the rule over the 24-year-old and offer him Premier League football.

Aston Villa have beaten Saint Etienne to sign Egyptian winger Trezeguet
Reports in France had claimed Saint Etienne were set to hijack the move, using part of the proceeds of William Saliba’s proposed £30million transfer to Arsenal to fund a late swoop.

However, SunSport can reveal Villa expect to complete his signing in the next 48 hours after club CEO Christian Puslow brokered an £8m deal with the Turkish club.

The forward scored nine goals in 29 league games last season to attract serious interest from Galatasaray, Italian giants Inter Milan, Slavia Prague and latecomers Saint Etienne.

Trezeguet also showed his potential, beating Mo Salah to be voted the best player in Egypt’s AFCON Group A.

TREZ BIEN

He also completed the most dribbles in Turkish football last season with 112 successful attempts to go past opponents.

Trezeguet will become Smith’s ninth signing of a hectic summer spending spree.

Prior to the signing, Villa had already forked out £80m on new additions.

Smith’s men are expected to complete the signing of Man City midfielder Douglas Luiz over the weekend for £15m.

Manchester United have rejected a 60m euro (£53.9m) bid from Inter Milan for striker Romelu Lukaku.

The bid falls well below United's valuation of the 26-year-old Belgium international, who joined them from Everton two years ago for £75m.

Lukaku sat out Saturday's pre-season victory over Inter, whose manager Antonio Conte reiterated that the striker remains his number one target.

"I consider him a player who could improve our team," the Inter boss said.

"On one side it is my hope and my will, on my other side we will see what we find with the club.

"It's not right to speak about the player in this moment because he is a Manchester United player and for this reason we must show great respect for the club and at the same time for the player and for my players."

On Friday, Conte admitted he had tried to sign Lukaku while manager at Chelsea [from 2016 to 2018]. "You know I like this player," he added.

Inter's move for the Belgian is thought to hinge on the future of Mauro Icardi, who has not travelled on the club's pre-season tour of Asia amid reports he is to leave.

When asked about the Argentina striker, Conte replied: "The club was very clear that Icardi is out of Inter's project. This is the reality."

Lukaku missed both of United's tour matches in Australia because of injury before also sitting out Saturday's match in Singapore.

"If you're a player and don't manage to train for a week and he's missed three games now I think he'll be concerned," said Solskjaer. "He's working to get back on the pitch and let's see how long that takes. It's his ankle.

"I think we have done really well without Romelu but we all know he's one of the top, top strikers in the world."

Feels like a really dead summer window so far. Nothing too big from the top PL teams yet, barring the Spurs signing of Ndombele.

[MENTION=79064]MMHS[/MENTION], what happened to Klopp spending £450 million for the next 2 summers LOL? Not strengthening would be a big mistake by Liverpool.

Why surprised? And, why asking me? Didn't I tell you many, many times that our PLAN Alpha is to finish 4th in EPL, rest can wait.... :(

JK is a genius who would have won double this season with that squad, but only for probably the best ever team in EPL's history - and please recall my post, it still could have happened with out that January blow-up (as expected, one of the main reasons EPL is extremely physically demanding), that too for loaning Cline to save few quads - those 4 points lost against West Ham & Leicester were through that RB hole, where Klopp played Henderson as make shift!!!!!

Allison, Kieta, VVD, Mo, Fabinho & Mane cost roughly around 300mn ..... Staling, Suarez, Coutinho earned roughly around 250mn ......... you got your maths. I hope, by late August, VVD, Mo & Mane suddenly don't get "home sick" for Spain or Paris ............ FSG won't have enough time then to find a replacement that fits into Klopp's system :)

On a serious note, I think we are couple of players short for starting 14 - a winger and a CF to replace Stturrdige on bench. Klopp is backing on A Ox C (according to him, a new signing (sort of), and hoping that he'll enjoy another miraculous fortunate season with injury where his 3 forwards will play 50+ games non stop full season.

I knew Liverpool would never spend that 400 million you predicted lol. Klopp doesn’t really like the transfer market. He prefers developing a team.

Sir Alex was the master at strengthening after winning tittles. Just sticking with the same team whilst others will look to improve is a big mistake.

You missed the sarcasm bro - learn to read between lines from a poster's past..... Do you really thought that I believed Yanks will allow their Manager spending 400mn....after writing so many essays on FSG & Liverpool LOL? You can develop a team with calculative spending as well - at least no harm in spending big for a 21 years old CF like Warner or for a winger in his late teens/early 20s like Coman, Pepe.

Lyon’s Nabil Fekir completes bargain transfer to Real Betis

One year ago, Lyon forward Nabil Fekir was reportedly on the brink of a move to Liverpool from somewhere in the vicinity of $65 million. Now, he’s gone for around a third of that price.

Fekir has reportedly completed a transfer to Spanish side Real Betis for a reported $22 million plus add-ons, proving just how far a contract dispute and bad knee can torpedo a player’s value on the open market.

The 26-year-old came incredibly close to a switch to Anfield last summer worth somewhere in the vicinity of $65, with his now ex-agent stating that Fekir had even completed photos in a Liverpool jersey and passed a medical. Yet he never completed the transfer, as the Reds pulled out of the deal at the last minute for unknown reasons, thought to be potentially related to lingering effects from an ACL tear suffered early in the 2015/16 season.

Now, with one year left on his Lyon contract and a refusal to sign a new deal, the French club had no choice but to find a suitor, leaving Real Betis in a solid negotiating position and Lyon in no position to haggle.

The reports state Fekir’s cut-rate deal does come with a bit of a bright side for Lyon, as the add-ons are reportedly significant – up to $12 million worth – and the Ligue 1 side maintains a sell-on clause of around 20% should Fekir be moved by Betis. Still, the loss in value is significant from one summer to the next.

A dip in form could also be a contributing factor in the drop in value. While it’s not like the French international put up bad numbers last season – nine goals and seven assists to his name in 29 Ligue 1 appearances – it represented a serious step back from the 18 goals he racked up two seasons ago before piquing Liverpool’s interest.

For Betis, Fekir’s arrival represents an important replacement for Giovani Lo Celso who is rumored to be on his way out, with interest from Tottenham.

Ajax announce signing of De Ligt successor Edson Alvarez

Ajax have announced the signing of Edson Alvarez from Club America for a fee of £13.5m.

The 21-year-old Mexico international joins the Dutch champions on a five-year deal after ending a five-year association with boyhood club the Eagles, where he made 107 appearances, registering five goals and winning two major honours.

A multifunctional defender-cum-midfielder, capable of playing at right-back or as a defensive midfielder, Alvarez relocates to Amsterdam following the recent departure of prodigious centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, who joined Italian powerhouse Juventus after playing an instrumental role in the club’s most successful season this decade.

Alvarez – who helped Mexico lift their eighth CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer – is expected to play in central defence alongside Daley Blind, but manager Erik ten Hag has various options for the berth that includes Joel Veltman, Perr Schuurs and Lisandro Magallan.

His transfer will be seen as a coup for the Dutch champions as they beat off stiff competition from Premier League sides Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace and West Ham United as well as AS Roma for his signature.

“Even though I could go to the Premier League: I didn’t think for a second about going to a club other than Ajax,” he told De Telegraaf.

“The style of Ajax appeals to me. It’s a great team with a lot of talent. With their successes in the Champions League, they have made an impression not only in Europe, but also in Mexico.

“Being part of this club and this team is a great honour and a fantastic step in my career.”

#NUFC have broken their transfer record for a second time in 2019.

Forward Joelinton has joined from Hoffenheim for £40m.

Douglas Luiz: Aston Villa sign £15m Man City midfielder

Aston Villa have signed Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz from Manchester City for £15m - their 10th summer signing.

Luiz, 21, joined City from Vasco da Gama in 2017, but never played a game for the Premier League champions.

He spent the past two seasons on loan at Girona, making 46 appearances for the Spanish side.

His request for a work permit at City was rejected last August and he rejoined Girona for the 2018-19 season.

Villa says his transfer to the club is also subject to a work permit and it takes the spending for their Premier League return to more than £100m.

"Douglas is an extremely talented young player with an outstanding pedigree who I am sure will fit nicely into our style and system of play," said Villa boss Dean Smith.

Luiz was player of the tournament at the Toulon Tournament in June as Brazil Under-21s won the competition.

So I notice a few of you watch Italian football...

What can you tell me about Mattia Perin?...

Suggestions that he's on his way to Villa...

From the bits I've read he's out injured till November hence why the Benfica deal fell through... And he's had a few quite serious injuries...

Some say he's overrated while others say he's better than the Milan keeper...

We do need a keeper... Do you think he would do well in the Prem?

Everton are in talks to sign Wilfried Zaha and are set to bid £60m plus a player for the Crystal Palace forward, Sky Sports News understands.

Zaha wants to test himself at a new club after four-and-a-half years at Palace, who finished 12th in the Premier League last season.

His preference would be to remain in London, but he is understood to be willing to move back to the north-west, despite an unsuccessful two-year spell at Manchester United before he returned to Palace.

The south Londoners value Zaha at £80m and are under no financial pressure to sell having already seen Aaron Wan-Bissaka join United for £50m this summer.

The Ivory Coast international is understood to have informed Palace of his desire to leave Selhurst Park after returning from the African Cup of Nations.

Arsenal have had a £40m offer rejected for Zaha, after which his brother urged Palace to allow him to pursue a "dream" move to the Emirates.

Zaha has scored 53 goals in 323 games across two spells as Selhurst Park, but is believed to be keen to prove himself at the highest level after making just four appearances during his time with United.

Everton finished eighth in the Premier League last season, and have already strengthened their squad this summer with the signings of Jonas Lossl and Fabian Delph, as well as making Andre Gomes' loan deal permanent.

It didn’t seem sarcastic sorry.

One thing you always do is assume if Liverpool bid for a player it will happen. Werner will probably end up at Bayern.

Nicholas Pepe could end up at Liverpool if reports are to be believed. I don’t think he will want to join Arsenal, Napoli, or Inter Milan.

For any Arsenal fans, news is breaking we are ahead in the race for Nicholas Pepe. Seem to be reliable sources as well. Also hearing Tirney should be done soon. Haven’t read much about a CB which is what we badly need.

A lot of my posts regarding Liverpool transfer has double meaning :). I hope they do buy some player.

BREAKING: Juventus are preparing an offer for Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku and are willing to include Paulo Dybala as part of the deal, according to Sky Sources

MU have had a deal ready on the table for Bruno for a while now but they are stalling for some reason, i guess its because of Dybala, who would be the first choice.

Seems as though I was wrong on Pepe. Looks like he will be joining us. Sorry bro. Our yanks didn't let us down. :yk

Thats crazy with pepe going to arsenal, if it happens and they allow them to pay in instalments it makes me belive the rest were never really in for him

Sky Sports News understands Juventus are preparing to make an offer for Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku and had been willing to include the Argentina striker as part of the deal.

But Sky in Italy say Dybala wants to remain in Turin and could return from his summer break early in order to start learning Sarri's methods.

Dybala is currently due back at Juventus on August 5 having been given extra time off by the Serie A champions after featuring for Argentina in the Copa America this summer.

United have been negotiating with Inter Milan for Lukaku but the clubs remain far apart in their valuation of the Belgium international.

Romelu Lukaku is attracting interest from Juventus and Inter Milan
Romelu Lukaku is attracting interest from Juventus and Inter Milan

Inter made a bid of £53.9m upfront for Lukaku with no add-ons earlier this week which was rejected by United.

It is understood United would want in excess of the £75m they paid to sign Lukaku from Everton in 2017 if they are to allow him to leave Old Trafford.

maguire is english, youll have to pay a premium

i think de ligt will join us, barc are in financial ruin and juve and psg dont need him, only man utd have put in an offical bid with ajax the rest is his agent trying to raise his valuation, those are just riola games.

English players always go for a premium, that's how its always been in this country.

as for de ligt, ajax have accepted our bid of £80m for him, we are just waiting on his agent, who is always going to be a dick and delay deals to push for more money.

so its not valid for 2 years if that article is correct?

Well thats what i said, juve will just develop him to make reach his peak, then he will sign for RM in 2022, so you can weep when you see him head to spain in a couple years after you develop him.

Official: Manolas joins Napoli

Kostas Manolas is a new Napoli player after undergoing his medical today, completing the €36m transfer from Roma.

The Greek centre-back was in Rome today at the Villa Stuart clinic for his medical tests with the Napoli club doctor.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis then welcomed the centre-back on Twitter with the message: ‘”Welcome Kostas!’

The centre-back just turned 28 years old and has been in Italy since leaving Olympiacos for Roma in 2014 for €15m.

I don't think we're in for lukaku as we have higuain and he is not leaving. Inter are only in for him.

If I was man utd I would try to get neymar - swapping lukaku in process, but I don't think he wants to go to UEFA cup level

Everton have made a £55m bid to sign Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace, Sky Sports News understands.

The offer for the Ivory Coast winger is cash-only and does not include the possibility of any Everton players moving in the opposite direction.

Arsenal had previously appeared to be favourites to sign Zaha, but the London club are now close to completing a deal for Lille winger Nicolas Pepe.

Zaha's preference was for a move that would keep him in London, but he is understood to be willing to move back to the north west, despite an unsuccessful two-year spell at Manchester United before he returned to Palace.

The 26-year-old scored a career-best 10 Premier League goals last season to help Palace to a 12th-placed finish, but now wants to prove himself at a higher level.

Everton are also in talks to sign Juventus striker Moise Kean, with the Toffees looking set to continue the aggressive transfer policy they have pursued since majority owner Farhad Moshiri invested in the club in 2016.

Sky Sports is reputable and they have said you enquired about Lukaku, Dybala was added to the deal at MU's request. However Inter are more desperate for Lukaku but they need to get rid of Icaradi first.

Paris St-Germain have signed Everton and Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gueye for a fee in the region of £30m.

The 29-year-old joined Everton from Aston Villa for around £7m in 2016 and played 108 times for the Toffees.

He has signed a four-year deal with the French champions.

Gueye's exit from Goodison Park follows the sale of winger Ademola Lookman to RB Leipzig. Everton have signed midfielders Andre Gomes and Fabian Delph, and goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

Manager Marco Silva has said he hopes to recruit in another five positions before the transfer deadline on 8 August.

Gueye said of his move to France: "I will do everything to justify the faith [PSG] have shown in me and to integrate into this talented squad."

The Senegal international thanked Everton fans for their "love" and "support" in an Instagram post.

He wrote: "As you know I am about to start a new journey, a journey that I have dreamed about since a kid and when this opportunity presented itself I couldn't turn it down."

Will Everton miss Gueye?

No player in the Premier League attempted more tackles than Gueye last season. He won 89 of his 142 tackles.
Leicester's Wilfred Ndidi also attempted 142 tackles and won 99, but he played five more league games.
Gueye therefore won more tackles per game (2.7) than any player in the Premier League.
Gueye completed 75 interceptions in his 33 league games, the sixth-highest in the Premier League.

Patrick Cutrone joins Wolves from AC Milan for £16m

Wolves have signed Italy striker Patrick Cutrone from AC Milan for £16m.

The 21-year-old, who scored 27 goals in 90 appearances for Milan after making his first-team debut in 2017, has signed a four-year deal at Molineux.

His international debut came in March 2018 and he recently made three appearances at the European Under-21 Championships.

"The club really wanted me and being able to play in the Premier League for Wolves is fantastic," said Cutrone.

"I'm very happy and want to give my all for the team."

Wolves sporting director Kevin Thelwell said: "Patrick is an exciting signing at a very exciting period for this football club.

"We have a strong philosophy under the leadership of Nuno [Espirito Santo, Wolves boss] of bringing in the right type of people and developing young talent while staying humble and grounded as individuals, and we feel Patrick perfectly fits into our philosophy.

"We are very pleased to have a player of Patrick's ability join the club and look forward to him being a part of Nuno's squad in another historic season for Wolves."

AC Milan confirm €35m Leao signing from Lille

The 20-year-old replaces Patrick Cutrone in the Rossoneri squad after spending just one season in Ligue 1 with Lille
AC Milan have signed Rafael Leao from Lille for a reported €35 million (£32m/$39m) fee.

The 20-year-old striker, who can also play on the wing, arrived in Italy on Wednesday to undergo a medical and subsequently signed a five-year deal with the Serie A side.

The Rossoneri had been linked to the Portugal Under-21 international for weeks and reports suggested they would send Tiago Djalo to France as part of the deal, but the 19-year-old centre-back has not been included.

maguire is english, youll have to pay a premium

i think de ligt will join us, barc are in financial ruin and juve and psg dont need him, only man utd have put in an offical bid with ajax the rest is his agent trying to raise his valuation, those are just riola games.

BREAKING: Juventus are preparing an offer for Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku and are willing to include Paulo Dybala as part of the deal, according to Sky Sources

Looks like Lukaku to Juve is done and dybala coming to MU - This is daylight robbery, cant believe someone so incompetent like Woodward pulled this off.

Have Juve even seen Lukaku play football, moise kean was better.

A lot of reports stating that dybala keeps stalling the contracts,
I have no idea why we sold moise- he looks great, however hats of to Everton to reject our buy back clause.

I really do not want lukaku - especially his salary 9.5m euros a season, way too much,.

We need to get rig of higuain - as his salary too high, but Ronaldo wants a big guy up fron to lay it off for him

I dont think he is stalling, he's on holiday and will try to get as much as a higher wage as possible, we will offer him lukakus salary which is a big upgrade on his current deal anyway.

Official: Barcelona sign Junior Firpo

Barcelona have added depth at the left-back position by signing Junior Firpo from Real Betis. The 22-year-old has signed a five-year deal and has a release clause of 200 million euros.

"Barcelona and Real Betis have reached an agreement for the transfer of Junior Firpo for an amount of 18 million euros, plus 12m euros in variables," a club statement read.He is the club's fourth signing of the summer after the arrivals of Frenkie de Jong, Antoine Griezmann and Neto.Ernesto Valverde now has multiple options on the left of defence, having settled on a player to compete with Jordi Alba.

There wasn't depth in that position last season following Lucas Digne's move to Everton, with youngster Juan Miranda not trusted enough and with Marc Cucurella shipped out on loan to Getafe this summer despite impressing at Eibar last year.Real Betis, meanwhile, were prepared for this and have already signed left-back Alfonso Pedraza from Villarreal.

Crystal Palace have signed former England and Chelsea defender Gary Cahill.

The 33-year-old was released by Chelsea at the end of last season after seven years with the club that saw him win eight major honours.

The former Bolton and Aston Villa defender won 61 caps for England before "stepping aside" from international football in August 2018.

Palace have also signed Stephen Henderson and Jordan Ayew this summer.

Thank God, he's been a liability for over 3 years now.

Told ya, he stalled the contracts at every opportunity, he wants to stay with us and play under sarriball.

Lukaku wanted to leave, pogba wanted out, paul ince desperate letter- man utd in shambles

I think it was the other way round, we refused his demands, dont know why he would want to stay at a club who completely disrespected him and put him on sale without his knowledge...and yes sarriball, we all saw how far that took Chelsea last season.

Lukaku doesnt want to leave, we are selling him thats why hes going, but you still seem desperate to sign him, this whole deal with Dybala was because you suddenly got desperate for Lukaku, now i hear you are offering other players in the deal. Lets see because Inter are coming back with a bigger bid, but Juve seem like they become more desperate for him.

OK.... :29:

Tottenham have ended their interest in Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

Spurs had been considering a loan move for the 27-year-old Brazilian, who joined Barca from Liverpool in a deal worth £142m in January 2018.

Coutinho worked with Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino during a loan spell with Espanyol in 2012.

He has scored 21 goals in 76 appearances for Barcelona but has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the Nou Camp this summer.

Arsenal, Paris St-Germain and former employers Liverpool were among the clubs linked with a move for the playmaker.

Spurs could be set to lose midfielder Christian Eriksen as the 27-year-old Denmark international is understood to want a fresh challenge after six years at White Hart Lane.

Eriksen was linked with a move to Manchester United but the Old Trafford club have ended their pursuit of him.

The Premier League transfer window closes at 17:00 BST on Thursday.

Great bed time story, know prove the above with any report. He can go to inter with a bigger bid, hes good enough for them, but hes not good enough for us.

Man utd finishing 6th this yr.

Report? its all over the media, juve dont want Dybala, you should know that its your club, no need to be emotional because you got a second class manager and your club is killing one of your most exciting prospects in years.

As for Lukaku if hes not good enough for you why did you get desperate for, its was only because of Dybala wage demands that this deal had to fall apart and we were not interested in mandzukic or any other players you offered otherwise Lukaku would be yours and your statement would be different from hes not good enoughh for us to hes the best striker.

But it doesnt matter now as looks like he is signing for Inter, that was his first choice club to play for in Series A, not Juve which was second back up option.

Looks like Spurs have bidded for Lo Celso, Bruno and Dybala, they obviously wont get all and just one, probably Lo Celso which means Erikson is leaving.

MU have sold Lukaku to Inter, now if woodward doesnt sign a MF or an attacker he must be replaced, he cant sell Lukaku and not get a backup, we should ideally sign 2 players because we sold one

Transfer window closes at 17:00 BST
Tottenham miss out on Dybala, Sessegnon and Lo Celso set to join
Arsenal agree £8m fee for Chelsea defender Luiz
Man Utd agree 80m Euro Lukaku fee with Inter

A late flurry of deadline-day signings took Premier League spending for the summer up to £1.41bn, just short of the £1.43bn record set in 2017.

Deadline day spending alone by English top-flight clubs was £170m - but on just 17 deals, the joint fewest number of transfers on the last day of the summer window since 2009.

Everton's £34m signing of forward Alex Iwobi from Arsenal was the biggest incoming Premier League deal, while the largest transfer saw Romelu Lukaku leave Manchester United for Inter Milan for £74m - a loss of £1m on the fee they paid Everton.

Arsenal were the biggest spenders in England during the window, splashing out £155m. On deadline day, they bought £25m Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney and £8m Chelsea centre-back David Luiz.

Tottenham recruited Real Betis midfielder Giovani lo Celso on loan and signed Fulham winger Ryan Sessegnon for £25m. Their pursuit of Juventus forward Paulo Dybala was one of the big stories earlier in the day but the deal fell through.

Watford spent a club record, reported to be £25m, on Rennes winger Ismaila Sarr and Leicester bought Sampdoria's attacking midfielder Dennis Praet for a reported £18m.

Three former England internationals made moves - Burnley signing Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater and Manchester City bringing in Derby goalkeeper Scott Carson, both on loan, while Newcastle re-signed free agent striker Andy Carroll.

A busy day in the Championship was headlined by West Brom spending £4m on Southampton striker Charlie Austin.

This was the second year in a row when Premier League clubs could only sign players until the day before the season started, instead of the end of August.

The deadline has also now passed for Championship clubs, but teams from Scotland, Leagues One and Two and all of Europe's major leagues can bring in players until 2 September.

The total number of Premier League signings in the summer fell for the sixth year in a row.

What deals happened in the summer?

Eleven of the 20 Premier League clubs broke their transfer record this summer, with Sheffield United smashing theirs four times. Arsenal, Aston Villa, Leicester (twice), Manchester City, Newcastle, Southampton, Tottenham, Watford - on deadline day - West Ham and Wolves are the other 10.

Harry Maguire's £80m switch from Leicester to Manchester United was the biggest Premier League signing of the summer, followed by Arsenal's £72m purchase of Lille winger Nicolas Pepe.

Champions Manchester City bought Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri for £62.8m and Juventus right-back Joao Cancelo for £60m.

Spurs spent £53.8m on Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele - their first first-team signing since January 2018.

The 10 biggest signings by Premier League clubs this summer

_108249283_bbcsport_top_ten_2019_summer_final_v2.png

Most expensive Premier League signings this summer

Villa spent £125m, the second promoted club to hit nine figures after Fulham, who did so last summer, only to be relegated in April.

The other biggest transfers were Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£50m from Crystal Palace), West Ham striker Sebastien Haller (£45m from Eintracht Frankfurt), Newcastle striker Joelinton (£40m from Hoffenheim) and Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans (reported £40m from Monaco).

Chelsea also spent £40m on Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic despite having a transfer embargo. The Croat was already there on loan, so Frank Lampard's side were allowed to sign him permanently as he was already registered. Their sale of Eden Hazard to Real for a fee of £89m, which could rise to £150m, was one of the biggest deals in the world.

La Liga could overtake Premier League - Deloitte analysis

This was the second highest total spend since the introduction of the transfer window system in 2003, according to analysis from Deloitte's Sports Business Group. It is the fourth consecutive summer that Premier League clubs have spent over £1bn.

But Premier League clubs' net expenditure (purchases minus sales) was £625m - the lowest in a summer since 2015, helped by Hazard and Lukaku's big-money moves.

Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: "With this level of net spend, combined with a more modest increase in Premier League broadcast rights values for the coming season than we have seen previously, we would expect wages to increase at a greater rate than revenue, returning to a wages to revenue ratio of over 60%.

"However, this does not signal major financial concerns as Premier League clubs collectively generated pre-tax profits of £426m in 2017-18, while net spend as a proportion of revenue of 12% is at its lowest since 2012."

Here are some of Deloitte's other findings...

La Liga clubs could still overtake the Premier League's total. Spain's top-flight clubs have spent £1.1bn, with Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona accounting for two thirds of that alone. That number will increase with their deadline not until 2 September.
Championship clubs spent £160m on transfers, an increase from the £155m spent last summer.
Chelsea (who had a transfer embargo), Crystal Palace and Liverpool were the three clubs to make a profit on transfers this summer.
Benfica (£170m) and Ajax (£165m) were among the sides to make the most in player sales this summer.

What could still happen?

The deadline for La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and other European leagues is on 2 September so their clubs can sign Premier League players until then.

Real Madrid have been linked with United midfielder Paul Pogba all summer, but it seems unlikely United would let the France international go now without being able to bring in a replacement.

Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen is another who could leave the Premier League. The Denmark international, who has one year left on his contract, is interested in a move abroad. But could their failure to sign Dybala make a move less likely?

Manchester City winger Leroy Sane is a long-term Bayern Munich target but the cruciate ligament damage suffered in Sunday's Community Shield could see him stay at Etihad Stadium.

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale was never really linked to any English clubs before the deadline. He has got three-and-a-half weeks to find a European club, or else face a season out of the team, with the Welshman seemingly not in Zinedine Zidane's plans.

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar continues to be linked to Real Madrid and former club Barcelona, while Real attacking midfielder James Rodriguez - like Bale - may have to move away for first-team football.

The Premier League deadline closing could spark a flurry of signings elsewhere. Some managers in Leagues One and Two have been waiting for this stage, with Premier League and Championship clubs now more likely to know who they will be willing to loan or sell.

Neymar: Paris St-Germain reject Barcelona & Real Madrid bids for Brazil forward

Barcelona and Real Madrid have made unsuccessful offers for Paris St-Germain forward Neymar, says BBC Radio 5 Live's Guillem Balague.

Neymar's former club Barcelona are believed to have offered 100m euros (£92.4m) plus Philippe Coutinho.

Ivan Rakitic was also discussed with the French club as part of the deal for the 27-year-old Brazil international.

Real have put forward a deal that includes money as well as Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez.

PSG asked for Vinicius Junior but Real did not put his name in the frame.

Neither bid has been accepted, but it is thought PSG would prefer to sell to Real.

Neymar became the world's most expensive player in 2017 when PSG paid him 222m (£205m) so that he could buy himself out of his contract at Barcelona.

The striker has scored 34 league goals in two seasons for the French champions, although injuries interrupted both of those campaigns.

PSG fans held up a banner telling Neymar to "go away" on Sunday as he missed his side's Ligue 1 opener against Nimes after sporting director Leonardo said on the eve of the game that talks about the Brazilian's exit were "more advanced than before".

I want to cry after hearing Navas has left Real Madrid.

It is official I’m no more Madridista...

Why Real Madrid?

First Ronaldo and now Navas?

Mauro Icardi: Argentina striker joins Paris St-Germain on season-long loan from Inter

Argentina striker Mauro Icardi has joined Paris St-Germain on a season-long loan from Inter Milan.

The 26-year-old has also signed a two-year contract extension at Inter but PSG have the option to make the move permanent for a reported fee of 65m euros (£59m).

Icardi spent six years at Inter, scoring 124 goals in 219 appearances.

"I will give everything to help my new team go as far as possible in all competitions," Icardi said.

"Paris St-Germain has become an international football powerhouse, attracting some of the greatest players in recent years.

"The momentum is strong in Paris, ambitions are high and I am sure that we have everything here to go even further."

The arrival of Icardi follows the signing of goalkeeper Keylor Navas from Real Madrid.

Costa Rica international Navas, 32, has joined the French champions on a four-year deal.

The top five leagues in Europe spent a combined record £5bn in the 2019 summer transfer window, an increase of £800m on the previous record set in 2018, according to Deloitte.

Premier League clubs spent £1.41bn, following a flurry of signings on their deadline day on 8 August.

Spanish top flight clubs paid £1.24bn in 2019, doubling spending from 2017.

Clubs in Italy's Serie A, Germany's Bundesliga and France's Ligue 1 all set new transfer records in their leagues.

La Liga sides spent a combined total of more than £1bn for the first time, with Antoine Griezmann moving from Atletico Madrid to Barcelona for £108m, Joao Felix switching from Benfica to Atletico for £113m and Eden Hazard transferring from Chelsea to Real Madrid for £90m.

Scottish Premiership sides spent an estimated £25m, with Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers making up the majority of that total, while other top teams utilised loan and free transfer methods for players.

Dan Jones, head of Deloitte's sport business group, says the record spending is "unprecedented" and has been driven by a number of factors, including additional money from new television contracts, and squad revamps resulting from managerial changes.

"The improved financial performance of European football clubs has also reduced the need for clubs to sell their best players," Jones said.

He added, though, that Premier League spending has fallen.

"Looking to the Premier League, this summer's player transfer expenditure fell narrowly short of record levels, and net spend was at its lowest level since summer 2015," he said.

"While this level of net spend as a proportion of revenue of 11% is the lowest since summer 2011, we still expect wages to increase at a greater rate than revenue in the next couple of seasons."

The European transfer window closed on 2 September.

What Europe's top five leagues spent
Competition Total spend Biggest single purchase
Premier League £1.41bn Harry Maguire (Man Utd, £80m)
La Liga £1.24bn Joao Felix (Atletico Madrid, £113m)
Serie A £1.06bn Romelu Lukaku (Inter Milan, £74m)
Bundesliga £670m Lucas Hernandez (Bayern Munich, £68m)
Ligue 1 £605m Wissam Ben Yedder (Monaco, £36m)

Fifa has announced a series of measures to restrict fees paid to players' agents and the amount of international loan deals clubs can be involved in.

They will see agents of the selling club receive a maximum of 10% of the transfer fee.

In addition, the cap will be 3% of the player's fee and 3% of the player's fee for agents of a buying club.

The recommendations from the Football Stakeholders Committee will go to the Fifa Council meeting on 24 October.

The Premier League paid out more than £260m to agents during 2018-19 - an increase of £49m on the previous 12 months.

The restriction on international loans is designed to "prevent player hoarding and ensure that loans have a valid sporting purpose for youth development as opposed to commercial purposes".

For players aged 22 and over, from next season clubs will be limited to eight international loans in and out, with that number dropping to six by 2022-23.

There will also be a maximum of three loans in and three out by the same two clubs.

The new guidelines are part of Fifa's ongoing process to reform the transfer system, in order to protect its integrity and prevent abuses.
