Suranga Lakmal thread

Suranga 'Cobra' Lakmal: Finally fulfilling his talent as a deadly strike bowler?

Ive noticed this for some time now, the guy has been laid the responsibility to lead the Sri Lankan attack and has not been bad at all. Hitting the right spots with decent pace and swing, excellent exponent of swinging conditions. He is a very, very good bowler these days and not rated highly enough I think. This is considering his initial break stint where he was always considered 2nd, 3rd choice to Malinga, and maybe his haircuts in the past didnt do him much favor. But now, that swagger and flair seems to make sense.

Most Improved fast bowler after Hassan Ali in recent times

Yes absolutely. He uses helpful pitches to complete ability. But I wonder, at 31 years of age and a lanky structure, how many years does he have in him?

The bowlers to invest in are there. Chameera and Kumara. Will not be world beaters but if nurtured properly, they can be very, very good by Sri Lankan standards of fast bowling.

Under rated bowler.

I expect him to be a decent strike bowler for Srilanka for the next 3 years.

Former Sri Lanka Test Captain Suranga Lakmal has informed Sri Lanka Cricket that he will retire from all forms of International Cricket following the completion of the upcoming Sri Lanka Tour of India 2022.

“I’m indebted to Sri Lanka Cricket for giving me this astonishing opportunity and having faith in me to bring back my motherland’s honour as it has been absolute pleasure to be associated with the board that shaped my professional life and also enriched my personal development,” said Lakmal in his retirement letter submitted to Sri Lanka Cricket.

“I have nothing but the utmost respect for all my players, coaches, team managers, support staff, administrative staff and all other supportive staff,’’ Lakmal has said further.

Suranga Lakmal played for Sri Lanka across all international formats, making valuable contributions to the betterment of the national team.

“We take this opportunity to wish Lakmal the very best for his future endeavors, and looking forward to seeing him perform for the country during the Sri Lanka Tour of India, if the selectors consider him for the tour,’’ said Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket.

‘’Lakmal has been an excellent contributor for Sri Lanka Cricket and delivered some memorable spells during his national career, and his services will be remembered well.’’ added De Silva.

How do you rate Suranga Lakmal?

After making his international debut in India in 2009, Srilankan pacer Suranga Lakmal has decided to end his career in the same country.

Till now, Lakmal has played 68 tests for his country and took 168 wickets at an average of 36 and a strike rate of 72. He has also captained his side in few matches, notably captaining his side to whitewash over South Africa.

Though his career average seems to be bad, his returns in last 5 years has been outstanding. Since 2017, he took 89 wickets at good average of 28.

Lakmal has also took more than 100 ODI wickets.

With very few pace bowling options to choose from, I'll definitely pick him along with Chaminda Vaas in Srilankan All Time Test XI.

How do you rate Suranga Lakmal and what is your favourite Lakmal memory or performance ?

Derbyshire have signed experienced fast bowler Suranga Lakmal on a two-year contract.

Lakmal, 34, has enjoyed a long international career with Sri Lanka, taking 285 wickets across all formats for his national side, including 168 in Test cricket, the fourth-most in their history.

The right-arm quick will retire from international cricket after Sri Lanka’s two-Test away series against India, starting later this month. He will lead Derbyshire’s developing attack for the next two seasons, with the experienced seamer available for all formats, subject to visa and ECB approvals.

Quick and accurate, with the ability to generate big swing and seam movement, Lakmal established himself as the leader of Sri Lanka’s red ball attack between 2018 and 2021, picking up 72 wickets at an average of 24.73 during that period.

The fast bowler has taken four five-wicket hauls in Test cricket, with his best figures of 5-47 coming against West Indies in March of last year.

While many of Lakmal’s most notable moments have come in the longer formats, his record also boasts plenty of quality in the white ball game, with 235 List A wickets at an average of 28.56, 109 of which were taken in One-Day Internationals for Sri Lanka.

Lakmal also lifted the 2021 Lanka Premier League trophy in Twenty20 cricket and will now link up with new Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, with whom he worked between 2019-2021.

Arthur said: “Suranga is among Sri Lanka’s all-time greats with the ball and it’s brilliant to be able to bring him to Derbyshire for the next two seasons.

“We have big ambitions for the project at Derbyshire, and Suranga’s decision to retire from international cricket and commit to the club shows he’s as excited about those plans as the other players and coaches.

“He knows my standards and can set the example for our young players on and off the field, and to add his quality to our ranks gives us a whole new dimension with the ball.”

Lakmal added: “Experiencing county cricket is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and the chance to work with Mickey again was something I couldn’t turn down.

“I’ve loved every second of my international career, and I would like to thank Sri Lanka for giving me the opportunity to live my dream. Hopefully I can bring that experience into this new challenge, to help the young bowlers, who are already making an impact at Derbyshire.”

Suranga Lakmal has been ruled-out for the remainder of the 2022 season with a right elbow problem that needs reconstructive surgery.
The fast bowler, who claimed his maiden five-wicket haul for Derbyshire against last month, had been working through the problem, which he picked up against Leicestershire in April, but was ruled out of last week’s game against Nottinghamshire, as the issue worsened.

Lakmal, who has a two-year deal with Derbyshire, will continue to be assessed by the Club’s Medical Team, and he will work closely with them throughout his rehabilitation process.

A replacement will be announced in the coming days, ahead of Derbyshire’s Vitality Blast opener against Birmingham Bears on Friday.
Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, said: “It’s never nice to lose a player, and Suranga has made a positive start to his time with Derbyshire.

“The injury is quite severe, so now it’s about making sure it’s sorted out properly, so he will be primed to come back next year and do well for us.

“I can’t speak highly enough about what Suranga has brought to us, I think you could see in the game against Nottinghamshire the impact he’s had on our bowling attack.

“That’s a pity, but it gives an opportunity for another player to come in to the county of choice, and hopefully we can push ourselves to greater heights.
