A Swiss couple have been attacked at Fatehpur Sikri, a monument 44km (27 miles) from the Taj Mahal, Indian police say.

A senior police officer told BBC Hindi that four men attacked Quentin Jeremy Clerc and Marie Droz after an argument on Sunday in Agra district.

Local media reported on Wednesday that Mr Clerc had suffered a fractured skull and Ms Droz had fractures to her hand.

They are being treated at a hospital in Delhi. No arrests have been made.
Mr Clerc told The Times of India newspaper that the argument started after the men started taking pictures of them.

The report quoted police as saying they had forced Ms Droz to take selfies with them, and continued to follow them for an hour, before attacking them with sticks.

Agra's Superintendent of Police, Amit Pathak, said the suspects had been identified and would be arrested soon.

"The couple came to the police station and we took them to a hospital for treatment. They did not want to file a report, but we have still registered a case against four men," he said.

India's Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday asked the government in Uttar Pradesh state to submit a report in the case.

Sorry state of affairs.

I hope this isn't related to the extremists who want to get rid of the Taj, trying to scare away tourists.

Foreigners need to avoid getting hostile in a hostile nations. And by hostile, i mean, avoid getting in confrontation with locals, especially in third world countries.

Hope they're okay. Question for the Indian posters here about something I've heard from 2 white girls who recently visited India...Is it true that random people on the streets come up to white people/women and ask for "one snap"? Meaning they want to take a picture with them? Both the girls told me it happened to them in every city they went to and families would send their kids to ask if the whole family could take a picture with them?

thought that was weird...

Yes. Inferiority complex.

Yes they later tell their friends that the white people in the pics are hollywood celebs. Thats what i heard from a friend who lives in Rajasthan.

Nothing new and unexpected for foreigners travelling. I feel as though such incidents are given more importance when it happens back in India and Pakistan. I can't name a single friend of mine who hasn't been attacked in London, New York or even cities like Paris and Bonn, ...and trust me, I have A LOT of friends in Uni or travelling all around the world.

Facing problems from locals is in itself a huge reason as to why travelling considered such a strenuous and at times, a dangerous activity. Happens everywhere.

Do you tell your friends something else?

Not insecure enough to ask white folks for a snap. Add to that most Indians aren't idiots like their neighbors who would believe something as comical as that.

Okay so you know all the 1.5 billion Indians personally and can guarantee that not even 1 of them says those things. Quite impressive.

Have you ever heard of the term 'generalization'? When you Pakistanis call us Indians vegetarians, do you mean that you know every Indian personally and can guarantee that every one of us is a vegetarian?

Yes it happens.

Why would anyone want to travel in UP?

Even UP people runaway to other states if they have a chance.

I never called Indians vegetarian. I can only speak for myself and you can only speak for yourself.

I've seen same thing it happen in Germany at a big expo with hostesses.

Random people (mostly white youth) taking selfies with them.

Expo girls are usually dolled up and are representing an organization/brand, so I can see people taking pictures with them. I wouldn't expect that to happen to white female tourists in Germany though.

But yeah, I guess due to the rarity of white people in India this probably happens. The news in the OP does say that the guys forced the female to take pictures with them so it must be a trend.

haha...one of the girls did say she felt like a celeb after it happened 2 days in a row.

Yes. Inferiority complex.

We might think of this as inferiority complex but this humble and subservient attitude is what endears Hindus to the host community when they migrate abroad. That is why you will get even avowed racists like Tommy Robinson sharing the stage with Indians like Tapan Ghosh from the Hindu Defence League. They don't come with the equality complex that you often find in immigrants from countries like Pakistan or Afghanistan. A complex which often isn't earned I might add.

LOl.. so true. In last 20 years I went to UP once when visiting Agra with my wife and hated experience due to multiple reasons. You could clearly see why UP is called a backward state if you visit.

In 2008 they did this to my friend (now wife). An unknown lady visiting Taj Mahal took pic with her...my (now) Mrs was a bit shocked.
