IPL Announces Introduction Of Tactical 'Substitute' From 2023 Season

The Indian Premier League on Friday announced that from the upcoming season (IPL 2023) each team will be allowed a substitute player who "will be able to take a more active part in the match". The announcement was made on Twitter. The concept of tactical substitutes was trialled by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the domestic T20 competition, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, this season.

"Time for a New season Time for a New rule How big an "impact" will the substitute player have this edition of the #TATAIPL," IPL captioned its tweet.

The 2022 edition of the IPL was won by newcomers Gujarat Titans. A mini auction is scheduled to take place on December 23 on Kochi ahead of the next season.

The details of the new rule are yet to come out. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, teams were asked to name four substitutes at the time of toss and out of them one could be used as an "Impact Player". The Impact Player could replace any players from the starting XI at any point before the end of the 14th over of either innings, and was allowed to bat and bowl his full quota of overs.

The tactical scope of the system was vast and there was no real restrictions on roles substitutes could play. He could replace a batter who had already been dismissed and still get to bat, as long as team used only 11 batters in total. Or else, he could replace a bowler who had already delivered a few overs and still get to bowl his full four-overs.

The Impact Player rule offers greater tactical scope than other substitution systems that have been used previously.

In the Supersub system used previously in ODIs during 2005 and 2006, the substitute's role coincided with that of player he replaced, he could not bat if the original player was already dismissed and could only bowl remaining overs of replaced player's quota.

In Big Bash League (BBL) held in Australia, teams can substitute a member of their starting XI at the ten-over mark in a full T20 game of the first innings. Also, the player replaced cannot have batted already or bowled more than one over out of his quota.

Feels like a gimmick when a gimmick isn't really required. Nothing is wrong with t20's as it stands.

Glad it is being trialled in a meaningless tournament though. If it happens to work well in IPL we can see it implemented into international cricket.

It can prove pivotal some time for example when a batting team has a collapse they can substitute a bowler with a bowler who can bat or simply a batsman. Or if the pitch is turning alot and you have 3 quicks u can change one with a spinner

It is effectively playing with 12 players but you don't reveal your 12th player to the opposition. Suddenly when one team thinks they've got all 5 batters out and are into the tail, this 12th man, like 'Money in the bank winner in WWE' will emerge and start playing!! A bit of a WWE flavor to IPL in the name of entertainment... 😂

Ridiculous, we dont need this again in international cricket.

We had this rule back in 2006.

its an unfair rule for the team bowling 2nd.

For example, Australia vs England is going on, England ends up batting really well and doesnt need a substitute. While bowling, Australia could be 6 down, batting with the last batter and for the bowlers to come out. Mark Wood is bowling his last over and ends up taking a wicket on the final delivery, his quota is complete.

Australia decides to use the substitute who ends up winning the game.

Unfair really. Basically, it would not be used by anyone in the first innings, but be used in the second innings.

Is T20 getting boring that we are seeing such gimmicks being introduced ? As it is Cricket is complicated enough and then we have daily such introductions of new rules.

As per the article they can only substitute before the 14th over of any innings so there will still be 6 overs to go even if the substitution is made at 14 overs

It will almost always be done in the 2nd innings unless the team batting first is something like 6 or 7 down at the 14th over.

Mostly team bowling will substitute a bowler for another main bowler and team batting will substitute a batter fot another batter. What is the surprise element here?
