What's new

Talent Spotter : Shaheen Shah Afridi

why you folks are hell bound to undermine the young man's fantastic debut ?

Just relays the rumours I've heard.

Anyway, even if the rumours are true, that doesn't undermine him in the least; he's bowling alongside the likes of Sadaf Hussain and Yasir Ali who are seasoned performers at the domestic level. Picking up 8 wickets in an innings is a fantastic achievement, specially considering that this is his first FC match ever.

Hater, stop making up excuses. You know what you said.

The guy does seem the real deal. Actually looks his age as well. If he has a good FC season, I would put him in the squad to England next year.

needs to be brought up the ranks soon so we can get rid of Amir.

He looks like a cross between Mohammed Irfan and Abdul Razzaq.

Hopefully he becomes as good a bowler as Irfan in his peak and even as good of a batsman as Razzaq :afridi1

On a more serious note, very happy for SSA. When the videos first emerged of him I didn't look too much into it as there have been many clips on talented bowlers in Pakistan leading to everyone getting excited, such as Afraz Khoso and Yasir Jan, and then these players just fade away. However, SSA doesn't look like he's going to be one of those players with this amazing start he has had and if he keeps it up he could even be in the Pakistan team within the next year.

Agree, just one good FC season is enough, fast track him to the national team if he shows a rapid progress this year. That's the way we picked up two Ws, talent, not stats.

looks like one of our better prospects of recent years.
Get him in the test team now!!
Surely he s good as Abbas

He needs work on his run up.

It’s not particularly smooth, and over the wicket he’s going straight into the danger zone.

Lovely delivery action though, nice pace, perfect height.

Probably needs his stock ball to be of a very full length.

Now you just need to unearth a tall right-armer as an upgrade on Mohammad Abbas. Abbas is okay, but he’s not tall enough to get away with bowling 133K. When you go to South Africa in 14 months you need a tall right-armer in an attack of:

Mohammad Amir (batting at 8)
Tall Right-armer (batting at 10)
Shaheen Shah Afridi (batting at 11)
Hasan Ali (batting at 9)
Shadab Khan (batting at 7 as Yasir Shah failed in Australia, and in South Africa your spinner is primarily a batsman)

Incidentally, has anybody noticed that he is totally outbowling his teammate Sadaf Hussain?

Massive difference in potential.

Same height, but roughly an extra 25K of pace.

Don't forget guys he is a brother to our best outswing bowler of last decade(in terms of swing and control only). So for him to bring the ball back in to the RHB shall not be a problem.

Shaheen Shah Afridi: Performance Watch

I really like fast bowlers, irrespective of which country they are from.

And which country can compete with Pakistan in it.

Moreover I like pacers who are Left arm, 6.3+ , smooth action and pacy.

At present I like Starc, Hazelwood, Hassan , Boult, Rabada , Bumrah and Amir. Especially I like Starc's action a lot.

And a new guy which has impressed me is, Shaheen Afridi.

Name is Afridi, action similar to Starc and 6.3 feet at just 17 years of age. Just wow wow wow!

He's selected for U-19 Asia cup. Let's see how he progresses.

He has a good calendar ahead.

Nov : U-19 Asia cup
Dec:BPL
Jan: U-19 WC
Feb, March: PSL
April: Pakistan cup.

Let's monitor his Performance

Selected for U19 Asia Cup so another chance to prove himself

He will be one of the best if nothing happens wrong in his career, mark my words!!

A left-armer who is 6ft-plus and took 8 wickets on FC debut? Sounds a bit too familiar. :wasim :shaq

I'm sure he's more like 6.7, or 6.8.

Seen a picture of him standing next to Irfan - lambu, he's roughly 6 inches smaller than him

Saj any update on him? He doesn't seem to be playing QeA. Is he injured?

Hope he gets picked by Karachi Kings so Azhar can work with him.

Expect to see him playing in BPL from today

^ Dont think he has gone to Bangladesh since he has to be In Malaysia with the U-19 team very soon.

Yes, Asia Cup = 9 to 20 November 2017

Then he has told us he is playing in BPL from 21st Nov

Hope the kid keeps himself grounded. Not sure if getting picked up by these leagues this soon is a good thing or not.

Probably the only pacer who is one to be genuinely excited over. The natural ingredients are there, I hope for the best for him.

You'll like Mudassir as well, has the raw ingredients but needs polishing on his action. Despite that he was the standout pacer in the Pakistan Cup.

Sameen Gul is the other

I'm not that educated on the analysis of pacers tbh so I won't comment. I just like that Shaheen has the basic skillset of a fast bowler: pace, height, movement and is a right hander...if these two blokes have the same then kudos to them too, would make Pakistan's attack a lot more potent.

Pretty sure Shaheen is a left arm pacer mate

My bad. Still pretty exciting altho it'd been better if he were a right armer who consistently brought it away from the right hander. I like seeing outswing bowling.

Sameen gul is your man then

Is he overhyped?

offcourse he is

doesnt mean he cant be good though

due to Junaids most posters including to a degree myself have gotten a new obession with height that didnt exist with such uniformity before

A one match wonder after playing well in one game on a green wicket he's suddenly good enough to be an international bowler let him play shorter formats to see his potential.
The PSL will show what he's made of.

Abbas averages 21 so far let him fail before putting him down he's done well better than all the other phaast bowlers and he's yet to play in England and SA which have the most suitable condition s for a seamer.

Height, pace, movement and aggression. He's got so much going for him. Just hope he stays fit and carries on improving.

Can't judge from that sort of angle, but he needs to straighten out that run up and get closer to the stumps. He's bowling far too wide from the popping crease considering he has a fresh one in his hands. His run up lacks momentum, if he gets that going he could get that extra yard of pace.

what do you think now?

He seems a bit far away from the stumps or is that camera angle making it seem so??

Is he going to the Bangladeshi Premier League now? Can't wait to see how he does against international stars...

Yes now that the U19s ACC Cup has finished, he's supposed to be going to the BPL.

Do we know what his pace was like in the U19 Asia Cup? He'll always have his height to his advantage, and he got good movement from the videos I've seen.

Very hyped for this youngster, I have a good feeling about him, the same feeling I got when I watched Babar Azam play in the U19 Cricket World Cup.

Shaheen Afridi follows in some famous footsteps

With the rise in popularity of Twenty20 leagues around the world, and some players even choosing to play for franchises over their national sides, Pakistani fast bowler Shaheen Afridi, who will represent Pakistan at the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup 2018, is at once a maverick and a throwback – aged just 17 years old, he’s already being courted by the likes of the Bangladesh Premier League, but he’s also chosen to put his international career first.

“I got a contract for the BPL and for the T10 league too but I didn’t go because I was attending the camp for preparing for the Under 19 World Cup,” Afridi said. “I was sad to not, but it’s my national duty. Next year hopefully inshallah I’m free and will be going.”

Remarkably, he signed for the Dhaka Dynamites before making his first-class debut, a sign of the esteem within which he is held. And if the Bangladesh Premier League side were in any doubt about their new recruit, his maiden appearance in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy would surely have put them to rest – the left-armer took 8-39 in the second innings, breaking the record for the best figures by a Pakistani bowler on first-class debut.

“I wasn’t nervous,” he said of his pre-match emotions. “The senior men supporting me said just show your natural bowling and class. In the first innings I got one wicket, and then in the second I got eight! In the second innings I was really relaxed and in a good positive frame of mind.”

Shaheen is no relation to Shahid, who also had a spectacular start to his career, smashing the fastest international hundred in his first ODI innings as a 16-year-old, but does have a cricketing relative in brother Riaz who played a solitary Test in 2004. He was also the leading wicket taker in Pakistan’s successful 2004 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup campaign, providing a fine example for Shaheen to follow.

Still, as a Pakistan fast bowler whose main weapon is in-swing, it’s no surprise who his hero is. “I bowl like Wasim Akram,” he said. “When I was starting the game, I was watching Wasim on video and taking tips. He’s a legend bowler for Pakistan.”

Wasim’s first-class debut, against a New Zealand XI, was also notable; he took 7-50, including the wickets of John Reid and Lance Cairns. This tournament is a chance for Shaheen Afridi to show that there might be many more similarities to come.

How fast do you reckon he's bowling? I saw they had speed guns in the India game, were they not doing that in this game?

Should be the first name on the team sheet for the three Tests in South Africa next December!

Please don't overcook the guy by saying "test team". We're ok for pace at the moment, for once let's let a player develop and get in when he's ready rather than risk ruining him.

Lets see how he performs in the PSL, he will hardly get developed in our 'prestegious' QeA trophy so It'll be better to select him in national team so that Azhar can work on his bowling.

He looks very very similar to starc, going to be a beast when he starts bowling in the senior side

I completely disagree.

I’m 1984-85 the 17 year old Wasim Akram made his First Class debut and took 7-50 against the touring Kiwis.

Wasim Akram was bowling in the high 140’s. Which was a good job, because the incumbent left-armed Azeem Hafeez was bowling 130-135K and Imran Khan was now 33 and returning from 18 months of stress fractures, and instead of the guy who’d bowled in the 145K range previously he came back as a 135K bowler whose effort ball reached around 140K.

So Wasim Akram’s extra pace was crucial.

Pakistan will have a similar problem in Tests in South Africa this December.

Mohammad Amir will bowl 135-140K, but at 6’0 is borderline too short for the conditions.

Mohammad Abbas will bowl 130-135K.

Hasan Ali will bowl 133-137K, and is so short (5’8) that he will struggle to find a length.

Pakistan in South African conditions will need a fourth quick, but one who can bowl closer to 150K than 140K. The choice is between Shaheen Shah Afridi or Wahab Riaz.

In addition, the spinner will be virtually a Specialist batsman.

So my lower order is:

6 Sarfraz Ahmed (c/wk)
7 Shadab Khan
8 Mohammad Amir
9 Hasan Ali
10 Shaheen Shah Afridi
11 Mohammad Abbas or Mohammad Asif
