Talent Spotter : Shaheen Shah Afridi

Philander is only 5'9" and bowls 130 KPH.
And has bowled in those conditions all his life.

Philander knows the right length to bowl at sea level in South Africa. And he struggles at the high altitude venues except when the pitch is a greentop.

Do you think Amir and Hasan Ali will adapt to the length required? Amir didn’t in Australia!

I think it is more of how the Pakistan batsman will play, Steyn, Morkel, Rabada, Ngidi and Philander. The bowlers will do okay. If you see the current series, the Indian bowlers have taken 40 wickets but the batsmen have disappointed and have not been able to score against the SA pace attack.

Pakistani quick Shaheen Afridi out to prove he's his own man

Despite a famous surname, and comparisons to Mitchell Starc, Pakistan's prodigious paceman Shaheen Afridi won't be pigeonholed.

GettyImages-909405436.jpg

Even though, at six-and-a-half feet tall, Shaheen Afridi towers over most other players at the 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup, the most striking thing about him isn’t his height; it’s actually his demeanour that’s most noteworthy. On first sight, the impression one gains of him is that of a gruff, old-fashioned paceman, all aggression and intensity.

So his mischievous side, witnessed during one of Pakistan’s Group D matches in Whangarei, came as surprise – while fielding in the deep he had a quick snack comprising solely of potato chips, a bib-wearing squad-mate acting as the facilitator. Despite how he looks from afar, and how he acts when bowling, it is clear from talking to him that he is more than just a mean speedster. Though he was shy and all polite smiles initially, after some coaxing in Hindi though, he was soon in deep conversation on everything from Salman Khan and Bollywood to idolising Wasim Akram.

It was an entertaining chat, but his bowling, when he’s on song, is an absolute treat. He steams in unhurried, and goes through his delivery in one natural, clean motion. In keeping with Pakistan’s tradition of churning out express pace bowlers, Shaheen is properly fast as well, and allayed with his height, it’s a powerful cocktail – something the South African batsmen found that out the hard way during their Super League Quarter-Final at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, when he claimed the wickets of both openers.

When Shaheen was introduced, the pair of Matthew Breetzke and Jiveshan Pillay had made it through the first five overs unscathed, with Breetzke in particular looking in good form, a couple of exquisite straight drives ending up at the fence. By the end of the sixth over he was out, foxed by a delivery that bounced more than expected, moved across him, and found the edge on its way to the keeper’s gloves. Shaheen struck again in his third over with an even better delivery, nipping one in from outside off, drawing an inside edge from Jiveshan Pillay, and disturbing the stumps.

South Africa never fully recovered, posting only 189/9, with Pakistan going on to win by three wickets with 13 balls remaining.

It was almost unavoidable that Shaheen would turn into such a promising player given that he’s grown up knowing only cricket. His brother, Riaz Afridi, made his Test debut for Pakistan when Shaheen was just four. Riaz wouldn’t play another Test, but young Shaheen was awestruck, and his love for cricket was sealed at an early age, with the younger Afridi still looking up to his sibling for advice.

“Riaz bhai (brother) was a Test cricketer, so watching him, I developed this liking for fast bowling,” said Shaheen. “He says always follow the plan your team sets for you,” said Shaheen. “Never let negative thoughts come to your mind. Always remain positive and concentrate on line and length, go after the wickets. He keeps in touch over the telephone even when I am on tour. He is my first coach after all.”

Riaz’s success also helped Shaheen have that conversation with the parents, one that every teenager dreads – plans for the future. Riaz’s achievements convinced the family that cricket was a viable career option, and Shaheen was overjoyed, with wider recognition coming soon after.

“My interest in the sport started growing playing tennis-ball cricket around 2015,” he said. “That was the same year I had my trials for Under 16 and eventually played for Pakistan, and that too in Australia. It was a great start for me, to play outside Asia in my first season in hard-ball cricket. This is only my third year in professional cricket.”

It was on first-class debut for Khan Research Laboratory that he really made his mark, setting a record for best figures on debut by a Pakistani with a return of 8/39 against Rawalpindi in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. At the ICC U19 CWC, he has so far displayed all the qualities that led to the hype, and he’s credited Mushtaq Ahmed, the former Pakistan legspinner who took him under his wing during the U16 days, for his meteoric rise.

“Mushi bhai has helped me a lot when I first went to the NCA. He is such a senior player, it feels great to work with him,” said Shaheen. “Before meeting him, I had only heard his name on the TV, as a big player. So when I get to sit down with him, it feels really nice. I have never seen Mushtaq Ahmed live, but in Pakistan, we watch the footages from '92 World Cup a lot. I had spotted him in that, and then when I got to work closely with him, I felt quite lucky.”

It would be unnatural for a young Pakistani fast bowler to grow up without idolising either Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis. Shaheen looks up to them both, and even had a chance to pick Akram’s brains not long ago. “Wasim bhai had met me in Australia recently,” he said. “He gave me some very nice tips, like how to use the kind of conditions we were going to experience here in New Zealand. He made me understand a few things very nicely, like how to attack with a Plan B when plan A doesn’t work.

“It was great to meet him. Wasim Akram was my hero, Waqar Younis also. I have heard stories that when they would bowl from opposite ends, there was a competition between them, like if one of them got a wicket, the other would try harder to get one for himself! There was that healthy competition between them. I decided I wanted to have a story like that one day.”

Perhaps that day is already here. Against South Africa, Shaheen’s double strike seemed to motivate fellow quick Mohammed Musa, who claimed the next two to fall, eventually returning 3/29. “This team has a lot of characters like that,” Shaheen revealed. “If I am bowling from one end, there is Musa from the opposite side, or sometimes it’s Arshad (Iqbal). It's a fantastic feeling to have so many good fast bowlers in our team.”

Irrespective of how Pakistan progress in this tournament, Shaheen has made a name for himslef. There are already calls on social media for him to be named in the senior squad is indicative of that, even if it is a bit too soon. Shaheen’s progress here on must be managed carefully – young fast bowlers can break down under heavy workload, and he should be eased into the senior set-up.

However his career pans out though, one thing is clear: though he has a famous surname and has drawn comparisons to Australian left-armer Mitchell Starc early in his career, Shaheen will be his own man. "I don't even think my action has any similarity with that of Starc's,” he said. “But people keep bringing it up on the internet. I have got a natural action, and I haven't really tried to model it around anyone else's.”

It’s stated with enough annoyance to ensure that line of questioning wouldn’t continue. Perhaps those early impressions of a fierce paceman weren’t too far off the mark after all.

He's been the best bowler of under 19 world cup.

Must be fast tracked into the team.

A few good PSL performances might be enough to convince Inzamam even further.

Try him T20s at first... slowly ease him in. He is a young boy with a developing body. Last thing we need is a stress fracture after which he never remains the same, but knowing the Pakistani selectors if they like the kid he will be put in all three formats and made to bowl 20 overs a day in Test matches.

Played First class Cricket; he had dream debut.

Played Under 19 world cup; he's been the best bowler.

Should be first choice emerging category player for his Psl team as well.

We are playing Zimbabwe and Australia in a T20 tri series, that is where I would give him a chance. Slowly build him up.

Why waste him playing on those dreadful slow pitches of Zimbabwe.
Rather play him against Scotland in 2 T20Is in June

Guys I know he is a spectacular talent and has got us all excited, but let me remind you that we have had such teenage prodigies before as well and they struggle to make the jump from playing against boy versus playing against men.

So while Shaheen hopefully has a bright future ahead of him, I request the PP hype machine to pipe down a bit because you guys will be the first ones calling for his head if he doesn't perform upto what you hoped.

Good call. I still have my doubts because of his seam position to the right handers but as a physical specimen he has it all. He will need a good captain and someone to bounce ideas off but he needs to be careful that too much advice doesnt also destroy him.

Bewal Express I saw some pictures too, did his seam position resembles wahab Riaz?

He can always get the seam position right, just needs proper coaching.

Tbh i have seen any real close ups. For some reason the close ups for Musa Khan and Arshad but Afridi. If the seam position is good then i will be as excited as everyone else.

Whats wrong with his seam position? I have seen him swing it both ways.

I was just saying that we havent seen a close up, My worry from the movement he gained is that it will be the saucer position, which makes it very difficult to move it in to right handers.

Still remember how Shehenshah could deflect bullets with his home made self bedazzled jacket.

Andheri raaton main ...

12 wickets in 5 games - Named in the Team of the ICC U19 World Cup!

Will love to see him do well in psl, that's how shadab and Hassan Ali got their starts in international cricket

He isnt ready yet.

But better to be with the national side than rot in rotten domestic set up

The International Cricket Council announced on Sunday the Team of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup and Pakistan left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi was named in the side for his 12 wickets in the tournament.

The 17-year-old Afridi was the only Pakistani in the side that features six nationalities and is already being tipped to have a long and successful career .

South Africa’s van Tonder was named the captain of the side, while five members of the triumphant Indian team make it into the eleven.

Team manager Nadeem Khan revealed Shaheen impressed all onlookers with his performances.

“Shaheen has been outstanding in the tournament and he has helped Pakistan claim crucial wins before that too,” said Nadeem Khan, while talking to The Express Tribune. “Many legends of the game and team managers came to me during the tournament to applaud Shaheen’s skills,” he said. “Even [Indian coach] Rahul Dravid came to me after the match and said Shaheen has all it takes to be a future star and become a real asset to the national side.”

Nadeem, however, feels Shaheen needs a bit more experience before he can be considered for the national team.

“He is a brilliant bowler with a lot of variations and that has impressed almost everyone who has watched him bowl,” added Nadeem. “It’s incredibly encouraging to see the praise he has received and to see him included in the team of the tournament.”

Really happy to be in team of the tournament, says Shaheen

Shaheen expressed his delight at being selected for the team of the tournament and believes it is reward for all the hard work that he has put in.

“Being named in the U19 World Cup’s team of the tournament is a great achievement,” he said. “I have always worked hard to make a mark. When I got to know about my selection, I was really happy. It felt like being selected for the national side.”

Shaheen, however, said the happiness would have been many folds more had Pakistan managed to reach the final of the tournament.

“This is a dream come true,” he said. “I tried to help Pakistan reach the World Cup final but we couldn’t take our chances. However, I am happy to be representing Pakistan in the team of the tournament.

The young pacer vowed there is a lot more to come from him in the future and is confident of one day wearing the senior team colours. “My parents always dreamed of me making Pakistan proud and today I have achieved that,” he said.

Shaheen was quick to credit his coaches and teammates as well, stating that all of them can take pride in his selection.

“This is not my success alone,” he said. “It was the effort of the entire team that made me achieve this. The coaches and manager gave me the confidence that I needed throughout the tournament. Hopefully I can kick on from this and play even better in upcoming assignments.”

I hope he gets good game time in the PSL... But what a team Lahore have this year.

McCullum, Fakhar, Lynn, Sohail Akhtar, Narine, Umar Akmal can all hit the ball a long way.

Narine, Yasir Shah and Raza Hasan all excellent spinners. Yasir Shah under Baz seems to be a different bowler.

Good fast bowlers in Sohail Khan, Musafizur and McCleneghan, with young seamers in Ghulam Mudassar and Shaheen Shah.

The two young seamers will struggle for game time, which is a shame...

They still wont win :) Big names does not guarantee success. Sure their team was decent in the first 2 editions too but they struggled :)

We will see atleast one of Shaheen, Salman or Ghulam in the playing xi due to emerging players rule. I wont be surprised if at some point of time we see two of these three in the playing xi.

As we saw last year in ISB united among Amad, Shadab and Talat almost every game had two of these three emerging

Is the emerging rule that one emerging player has to play in the starting 11? If so, Allah ka shukar...

McCullum
Fakhar
Lynn
Umar Akmal
Sohail Akhtar
Narine
Sohail Khan
Yasir Shah
Raza Hasan
Mustafizur
McCleneghan

I think without the quota rule, that is their best team. Who would you replace in order to get an emerging player in? And I assume your top pick would be Shaheeh Shah?

Shahid Afridi wicket a ‘dream come true’ for Shaheen Afridi

“Shahid Afridi is a legendary player, a world figure, taking his wicket was my dream which came true,” says Lahore Qalandars’ pacer Shaheen Afridi about the wicket everyone is talking about this PSL.

Saheen, who is being dubbed a future star for Pakistan cricket, dismissed star all-rounder Shahid Afridi in the 20th over of his team’s March 11 clash against Karachi Kings, a ball after getting whacked for a maximum by ‘Boom Boom’. Lahore Qalandars eventually won the match in a super over.

On his thoughts on being a part of Lahore Qalandars he said that he feels “blessed” to be a part of such a team where everyone from skipper to coach is so supportive.

“I was truly disheartened when I was dropped from the team after playing a couple of matches. I asked my seniors for guidance on my bowling skills and where I was going wrong and they helped and gave me great advice to improve my game. Waqar Younis also helped me a lot. I am truly thankful to him,” Shaheen added.

When asked who his inspiration and role model, the 17-year-old said that he is a great fan of Pakistan’s legendary pacer Wasim Akram.

Shaheen Afridi, who played the recently concluded under-19 Cricket World Cup, made his Twenty20 debut for Lahore Qalandars against Multan Sultans this PSL season and has been lauded by cricketing pundits and fans alike for his performance.

In the March 9 encounter against Sultans, Shaheen Afridi delivered a match-winning performance by taking five wickets by conceding only four runs. The victory was also Lahore’s first in the PSL season 3.

Not good signs.

He has everything in him to be a good test bowler.

Height, Pace, Aggression, Angles, Reverse swing and Bounce.

But if he opts for this fun cricket, then in a year or two, he'll be playing all over the world and earn good money. But of no use in tests.

DEC, JAN - BBL

FEB, MARCH - PSL

APR, MAY - IPL(if Pak players are allowed in the future)

JUNE, JULY - ENGLISH LEAGUE (yet to be launched)

AUG, SEP - CPL

OCT, NOV- BPL, GLT20

Much better that he plays first class cricket and bowls a lot of overs. T20 leagues won't improve him much. Our domestic system is rubbish so better to include him in the national team.

Delighted to see him selected. Should play LO formats for now and travel with the test team. Excited by his potential.

Shaheen Afridi is the least experienced International cricketer

Shaheen Shah Afridi

He has only 2 FC matches under his belt.

And only 7 T20 matches as well. Here’s his stats:

Bowling
24 overs bowled
7 Wickets taken
197 runs conceded
8.32 ECR
20.2 SR

Batting
7 innings played
3 times not out
9 Balls faced
1 Run scored
0.33 Average
11.11 SR

Could Shaheen be the most prodigious international bowler ever? He has played so little matches to earn his international debut. I’m a big fan of him. Allah willing, he will have an amazing career.

If I’m not wrong Wasim played no domestic cricket either. He was just picked and played.
