What's new

Team Green [181 & 354/4] beat Team White [249 & 284/5] by 6 wickets in 4-day match at Derby

Haider should be given a chance in the last test. It is written that senior players AA n AS will fail in the series.
Played a good inning against the likes abbas (top bowler for english conditions) , naseem, wahab. Seems to be in good nick.

Yes I would go with that aswell he had the quality just need to put away few shots and work on his temperament

Haider should not play tests yet. He absolutely should play T20 and potentially ODI (given his run in T20).

The management should work very closely on his game and monitor him extremely closely for 2 seasons before drafting him into test line-up.

From what I have seen of this kid, he has got absolutely great hand-eye coordination. His hand-eye coordination is similar to that to BMac and Sehwag but having said that there are a lot of other batting principles that should be taught to him, footwork is one of them. He needs to improve his footwork although his balance at crease is great. He also needs temperament and mental training to play long innings.

I have a lot of hope from this kid and I really hope proper investment is made into his game rather than leaving it all on luck. His diet, fitness and fielding should be already invested into for long-run.

I disagree with you I think he should play the last test if the series is already gone or won.

In terms of footwork against spin hes right up thier with the best in terms of psl but i agree on temperament.

Debuting a teenager in a Test in England is madness. Haider has only played one season of FC cricket and already there is clamouring for him to play all forms of international cricket.

Yes Haider is a promising young bat but some seriously underestimate the gap between U19, domestic/PSL, and international cricket.

I'm all for booting out Azhar and Shafiq but that's no reason to rush Haider. Let him first find his feet in white ball cricket before giving him a Test debut.

Haider Ali needs to play at 6 ahead of Fawad and Iftikhar

I would pick Kashif Bhatti, he will keep one end tight unlike Yasir Shah(in Australia). I don't trust Shadab to be a front line spinner. Faheem will be useless with the bat

45-47 overs from Abbas and Kashif
20 overs Shaheen
5 overs Shan Masood
2-3 overs Asad Shafiq
Naseem 15 to 16 overs

BABAR seems to lost his fluency ..
he can't play slow cricket

Babar has scores of 102*, 60, 100*, 143 in his last 4 test innings. SRs of 79, 62, 76 and 74 in these for innings. I understand what you are saying but Babar is too good a player to not slow down a bit if bowlers are bowling well In good areas, he has shown that before multiple times that he can do that.

Just scored a 80 odd not out in the last warm up as well.

Bold. I rate Haider but, I would prefer him to be be eased into international cricket. What we did with Babar worked and would be a safe bet with Haider as well. To first play him in LOIs, let him play another FC season and if he really shows that he is improving game after game and feels at ease at international level then Test is obviously the eventual step.

Every series is important but, I think its more important to develop a young player who is gonna serve you for more than a decade in a proper way.

I wont be surprised if he plays and probably impresses everybody but following the route of Babar would be the safest way as you dont want him to go down on confidence if he doesnt do well and form any doubts.

Pakistan’s batsmen hit form on the third afternoon of the intra-squad match at the Incora County Ground in Derby.

Haider Ali made a half-century and Babar Azam was 39 not out as Team White reached 132 for four at tea in their second innings, which represented a lead of 200 runs.

There was an injury scare for the tourists just before lunch when Abid Ali was hit on the helmet fielding at short leg and needed lengthy treatment on the field.

The 32-year-old opening batsman was absent during the afternoon session as he was assessed by a doctor but is not thought to have sustained any serious injury. It is not known at this stage if he will play again in the match.

Conditions were much better for batting although Team Green collapsed to 181 all out, losing four wickets for three runs, with Sohail Khan finishing with five for 50.

That gave Team White a lead of 68 but both Imam-ul-Haq and Shan Masood went cheaply before Haider and Babar added 50 for the third wicket.

Haider cut Yasir Shah to the boundary to reach 50 from 69 balls but was bowled by Faheem Ashraf and after Babar had lofted Yasir for six, the leg spinner had Fawad Alam caught off a leading edge for three.

Interesting that Kashif Bhatti hasn't bowled at all and Shadab has only bowled 3 overs.
Seems Yasir Shah is already guaranteed a spot which is rather worrying when you see that he's going at almost 6 an over in his 2nd innings so far

Moh Abbas 12-7-12-1. Thats some accurate stuff from Abbas, good to see he is getting back his control.

Madness to think Yasir will not play. Of course he will play. Pakistan’s best hope is that he finds the right pitch and conditions, wickets upfront by the quicks and 4th innings bowling.

Unfortunately nowadays even in suitable conditions he is not performing well. His biggest issue is lack of control. After two good balls, he balls a four ball.

Yasir seems to be making it count in this warm up. I am still a bit apprehensive considering what we all had to witness from him previous overseas tours. Dont think many have it in them to see more of those 4-5 RPO destruction in tests if it goes into that direction. :misbah3

Bowling well here as per stats maybe Mushy has helped him.

For a player of his calibre, Babar gets stranded in front of wicket too many times against spinners. I have seen him being cramped playing cut shot against spinners. Normally, it happens when batsman is not sure about the flight of the ball (not sure where it’s going to land), and foot-work comes as an after thought rather than proactively taking the batsman to the pitch of the ball.

Some of the best spin players I had seen before T20 era were Lara, Javed, Zaheer, Mahela & all the Indians of 90s + Sunny & Vishy - they could get into position almost at the point of release and most times read the drop in air, hence they were hardly ever cramped playing back foot shots or front foot defence and could manage with soft wrists, even if they were beaten by flight or drift. Probably the best right handed batsman to do such was Azhar (uddin) - may be Babar should look to have a chat with the crooked guy. Misbah won’t do jack with this problem while YK managed his problem with his unique style, won’t fit on Babar.

Abid Ali injury update

Derby, 19 July 2020:

Abid Ali was struck on the helmet while fielding at forward short-leg on day three of the intra-squad match on Sunday afternoon. Abid Ali has shown no signs of concussion but has undergone a precautionary CT scan which also has returned normal.

Abid, who has also been rested from the remainder of the match, was hit near the logo of the helmet by a Haider Ali flick off Mohammad Abbas.

Pakistan team doctor, Dr Sohail Saleem, said: “Abid is absolutely fine and will be available to resume training on Wednesday following Tuesday’s rest day. He underwent a precautionary CT scan which has also returned normal.”

Babar has his fair share of struggles against spin. He is not able to read the ball from the hand. He even struggled against tajil aslam in the last test against Bangladesh. Though he has improved alot against spin from his struggles against sri in uae but he still needs to work more on this.

Arrived late, not much experience in England, walked in at no.3 and scored a 50 in his second innings, where experienced players still struggling to score.. Talent and form speaks volume here... He definitely adds to the chance of winning the series, if the coaching team are intelligent enough should give him a place in the 11

Close of play at Derby on day-three of four-day match,

Team White 2nd inns:

245 for 5 in 77 overs

M Rizwan 81 not out
Shadab Khan 20 not out
Babar Azam 58
Haider Ali 51
Yasir Shah 2-52
Mohammad Abbas 1-20

Pakistan batsman Abid Ali was cleared of significant injury but will take no further part in Pakistan's opening intra-squad match after he was hit in the helmet while fielding at short leg at the Incora County Ground in Derby.

Ali required lengthy treatment on the field after he was felled by the full force of a Haider Ali clip to leg and, after an ambulance was driven to the middle to help tend to him, there was palpable relief when he was able to get on a stretcher unaided and sit up as he was taken from the ground. Ali later underwent scans which cleared him of concussion.

“Abid is absolutely fine. He underwent a precautionary CT scan which has also returned normal," Pakistan team doctor Sohail Saleen said.

The 32-year-old opener, who has played three Tests, will sit out the final day of the warm-up match tomorrow and is scheduled to return to training on Wednesday.

That will come as relief to the tourists following a day in which their batsmen found form in the bright sunshine.

After the bowlers had dominated on the first two days, Pakistan's coaching staff will have enjoyed seeing Babar Azam bat for more than three hours for a half-century while wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan top-scored with an unbeaten 81, his second fifty of the game.

Teenager Haider also made 51 as Team White closed on 245 for five - with a lead of 313 runs - after Team Green slumped to 181 all out with Sohail Khan taking five for 50.

Asad Shafiq’s hopes of building on his overnight half-century were ended by Babar’s direct hit from cover in the third over of the morning which sparked a collapse in which four wickets fell for three runs.

Faheem Ashraf edged a lifting ball from Shaheen Afridi who then tempted Yasir Shah into cutting a wide ball to gully.

Imad Wasim fell across his stumps to be lbw to Sohail and after a few defiant blows, Wahab Riaz, who played for Derbyshire in 2018, skied a pull to long leg.

That gave Team White a lead of 68 but they lost Imam-ul-Haq cheaply to Naseem Shah for the second time in the match when he edged a ball that moved away low to third slip.

When the players returned after lunch, Abbas brought one back to have Shan Masood lbw but Haider grew in confidence and he reached 50 by cutting Yasir for his seventh four.

But the 19-year-old was out in the next over when Ashraf got one through his defence and Fawad Alam got a leading edge off Yasir to backward point.

Yasir had a fascinating duel with Babar who dispatched his team-mate over the ropes at long on and clipped him past mid on for another boundary.

But it was far from one-way traffic and after Yasir almost defeated an attempted cut, he had the last word when Babar was lbw playing forward and the rest of the evening session belonged to the increasingly fluent Rizwan.

occurred to me the same..
Well hope so as he marched along ...
looking forward against archer & co

Yes it's good hes taking his time the more balls he faces the better it is as he will catch up with the run rate we dont want him getting 30 of 30 balls we need him to bat big

Yasir shah is going at 3.5 rpo not 6 hes got the wicket of babar I belive

Was going at 5.6 rpo in 5 or 6 overs at the time of posting and he did well to improve his figures since.

I still think Bhatti and Shadab should've bowled more overs just to see to where they are in terms of being backups for Yasir shah or second spinners especially with Shadab being talked about as a potential all-rounder in the 11

Asad Azhar can't get dropped, so he can't play

Good to see Babar and Rizwan getting some runs. Probably the two most talented Pakistani batsmen going into the series

Haider clearly outperformed Fawad and Ifti, but not sure a 51 in a intra-squad game justifies selection and a test debut in England. Atleast not right away, maybe bring him in mid-series if the more experienced players don't work out.

Agreed shadab needs to be bowling

Still one game to go, but the game at bowlers are being used, I think PAK will start the tour with traditional 6-4 combination. Three pacers (SSA, NS, Abbas) backed by Yasir & Iftikhar at six.

This is where that guy Haris let down his team big time. That 6-4 formation was perfect with Haris at 5, pushing Asad at 6 and bowling around 20 overs per Test. As a bowler, I think Fawad is better than Iftekhar but not sure about the batting now - don’t know whom to play.

A few positives so far in this match, but some of the batting is a worry, especially the openers.

Azhar needs some runs under his belt too.

Mohammad Hafeez opened for PCB Green since Abid Ali isn't taking any further part in this match.

Only lasted 3 balls against Shaheen before being caught behind.

Those runs havent come in a good couple of years now. He's a spent force m afraid.

I actually think that Shadab Khan has gone the full Steve Smith transformation.

He started out as a leg-spinner, but now he’s Pakistan’s third best batsman behind Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

He’s a far better batsman than Azhar or Shafiq or Fawad.

A few positives so far in this match, but some of the batting is a worry, especially the openers.

Azhar needs some runs under his belt too.

He’s going to need a Time Machine to go back in time to when he was a decent batsman.

He’s been rubbish outside Asia for two years since he was 33, even going down a level to play for Somerset, and be rubbish there too.

Pakistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan scored an unbeaten century on the fourth morning of the first intra-squad match at the Incora County Ground in Derby.

Rizwan’s hundred was the signal for Team White to declare on 284 for five, setting Team Green a target of 353 in a minimum of 89 overs.

The chase started badly with the experienced Mohammad Hafeez, in as a replacement for Abid Ali who was struck on the head yesterday, falling for two but at lunch, Team Green had moved to 56 for one from 16 overs.

This first warm-up match has been a good one for Rizwan who followed his unbeaten 54 in the first innings by scoring the 19 runs needed this morning to reach three figures.

A clip off his pads and a classical drive past mid-off brought him boundaries from Faheem Ashraf before a turn off his hip took him to a fine century.

Shaheen Afridi impressed in the first innings and he struck with this third ball which Hafeez could only edge into Rizwan’s gloves.

Afridi twice saw edges evade the slip cordon but Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali settled in to set up the prospect of a good finish.

Team Green 2nd inns

56 for 1 in 16 overs

Fakhar Zaman 26 not out

Azhar Ali 24 not out

Mohammad Hafeez 2

Shaheen Afridi 1-21

From commentary, evey boundary was miss timed for four.. shokar hay video dhek li . By the way why is here so much silence in the forum on Rizwan's century... I wonder ...

As Naseem seems to be on a mission to hit people, I wonder if its possible to put Hafeez and Malik in his net.

Shadab Khan being smashed all over the place. Definitely not an option for Test cricket right now.

Shadab is not ready yet and Faheem is crap with the bat. Misbah should not have ignored Amir Yamin.

Shadab should be sent back to First Class and made to bowl longer spells.
This has been his problem in entire career. He has played only 15 first class matches and hasn't bowler longer in 4 day cricket.

Azhar even in practice matches can not play above 40sr lmao.

Shadab has been over hyped, he let his own hype get to his head. If he stayed humble and kept improving, he couldlve been a very useful #8 batsman and spin option

Fakhar is destroying Shadab.
Thank you Fakhar Zaman.

Shadab should be sent back to First Class and made to bowl longer spells.
This has been his problem in entire career. He has played only 15 first class matches and hasn't bowler longer in 4 day cricket.

Shadab is more interested in playing pyjama and chaddi leagues. Instead of playing in the QEA Trophy last season, he was in BPL. Shows his priorities.

Tea report.

A brutal onslaught by Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has set up the prospect of a thrilling finish to the first intra-squad match at the Incora County Ground in Derby.

The left-handfer savaged the leg-spin of Shadab Khan as Team Green chased a victory target of 353 and at tea were on course at 164 for two with captain Azhar Ali unbeaten on 55.

Zaman moved into overdrive against Shadab, smashing him for six sixes, one of which cleared the Main Stand at the City End of the ground.

He also hit 10 fours but was out on 99 when he drove at Mohammad Musa and was caught by Shadab head high at third slip.

Wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan had completed a century in the morning scoring 100 not out before Team White declared on 284 for five.

Shaheen Afridi removed Mohammad Hafeez with his third ball but Zaman and Azhar shared a stand of 159 and at the interval Team Green need 189 from 44 overs.

Great to see Fakhar getting some runs, finally!

Not only is he needed for the T20's, but need him to keep Abid and particularly Shan on their toes in the Tests as well.

Fakhar’s runs did not come under ‘test match conditions’. 6 sixes and going after Shadab like a madman. Obviously he deserves praise for the inning but this lone show does not justify him a spot at the top of the order come the first test match against England

Haider Ali needs to play at 6 ahead of Fawad and Iftikhar

I would pick Kashif Bhatti, he will keep one end tight unlike Yasir Shah(in Australia). I don't trust Shadab to be a front line spinner. Faheem will be useless with the bat

45-47 overs from Abbas and Kashif
20 overs Shaheen
5 overs Shan Masood
2-3 overs Asad Shafiq
Naseem 15 to 16 overs

I agree on Haider to debut at 6. An ideal option to try out a youngster at that position or even give a chance at 5 not disturbing Asad at 6 where he takes it for himself couldn’t be promoted up the order even as a senior as he failed to score runs and scored pairs in a test.

Kashif was the 12th man in this match , didn’t even have played a match. Not known much of him , should have been tried in Asian conditions where spin gets help from the pitches. In England , should be either Yasir or Shadab. I’m fine with both of them , but Shadab can offer more with the bat and since England either of them wil, have equal amounts to contribute in bowling.

So would go with Shadab.

If is asad is not able to score of shadab and shinwari. What will he do against archer, braoad, etc.
Is on 5(38).

I don't think anyone here is arguing for that.

Well played Shadab - heading for a run a ball hundred. I am a bit surprised with Asad - what is he trying to achieve here?

And, very well played Azhar - in a tough away series, Captain needs to be leading from the front.

Rizwan playing really well,he actually good against pace particularly against short bowling. He used to get in really good position and would take most of them on.him scoring might make a big difference to even the series result.
A good wicketkeeper batsman and a good allrounder is what completes a team. Wk of Ab type and alrounder of kallis type, what team SA was during their time by the way.

Result Team Green won by 6 wickets

Team Green 2nd inns
354 for 4 in 88.1 overs
Azhar Ali 120 retired out 10x4
Asad Shafiq 67 retired out
Fakhar Zaman 99 10x4,6x6
Shaheen Afridi 1-23
M Musa 1-41

Pakistan captain Azhar Ali scored a century that guided his Team Green to a six-wicket victory in the first intra-squad match at the Incora County Ground in Derby.

Azhar anchored a fourth day run chase with a composed 120 from 225 balls after Team White led by Babar Azam had set a target of 353 in 89 overs.

Fakhar Zaman provided the initial thrust by smashing six sixes in a 128-ball 99 and Azhar paced his innings shrewdly before retiring with the finishing line in sight.

Asad Shafiq made 67 from 95 balls before he also retired leaving Iftikhar Ahmed and Sarfaraz Ahmed to complete victory in the evening sunshine with five balls to spare.

Despite the relaxed conclusion, the first of two warm-up matches has been a worthwhile exercise for a number of key players ahead of the first Test against England in just over two weeks with Azhar’s innings particularly encouraging after his modest season with Somerset in 2019.

Azam, another of the tourists key batsmen, also scored runs while Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi bowled with pace and accuracy and Yasir Shah twirled away for 31 overs in the match

It was a memorable game for wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan who followed an unbeaten half-century in the first innings by completing a century before Team White declared to set up a competitive final day.

Rizwan looked assured in both innings and two boundaries off Faheem Ashraf eased him through the nineties before a tuck off his hip against Naseem took him to three figures and prompted Azam to declare.

Team Green’s chase threatened to stall immediately when Mohammad Hafeez, in for Abid Ali who was struck on the head fielding at forward short leg on day three, was out to the third ball off the innings from Afridi which he edged to Rizwan.

But that was the last wicket to fall for nearly 43 overs as Zaman and Azhar first saw off the new ball and then eased through the gears with Zaman moving into overdrive against the leg-spin of Shadab Khan.

The left-hander plundered six sixes between long on and long off, one bouncing off the pavilion roof with another clearing the Main Stand at the City End of Derbyshire’s headquarters.

He also hit 10 fours but Shadab denied him a century by grabbing a head-high catch at third slip from a sliced drive off Mohammad Musa.

Azhar had been a spectator during the onslaught but with the exit of Zaman, he took the initiative to reach his hundred off 199 balls while Shafiq drove the left-arm spin of Kashif Bhatti for six on his way to an 81 ball 50.

Both made way to give Iftikhar and Sarfraz time in the middle and the tourists have one more squad game at Derby starting on Friday before the real business begins at Emirates Old Trafford on August 5th.
