Ok, so let's get back to some cricket. I was wondering what would be the best XIs for every test playing nation...made up of only players that have started their international careers this century? So not someone like Freddie who played a bit in the 20th century and then mostly in the 21st. Purely 21st century players.

Heck, even make a world XI if one wants to.

I'm gonna start with a Pak Test XI -

1. A. Ali
2. S. Butt
3. Y. Khan
4. M. Haq c
5. A. Shafiq
6. M. Hafeez
7. K. Akmal wk
8. S. Ajmal
9. M. Amir
10. W. Riaz
11. M. Asif

Pak ODI XI -

1. F. Zaman
2. A. Shehzad
3. B. Azam
4. Y. Khan
5. M. Hafeez
6. M. Haq c
7. K. Akmal wk
8. S. Ajmal
9. M. Amir
10. H. Ali
11. U. Gul

I guess Umar Akmal, maybe Sharjeel, maybe Jamshed all have a say. It is a pretty inexperienced side. I have Younis because you has scored so many runs and could help anchor with his experience.

I tried giving it a go with India, but man it's tough. Crafting a Test XI is near impossible, and even in ODIs I'm hamstrung with players who debuted in 2000 (ie not the 21st century yet): Yuvraj, Zaheer, Sehwag, Harbhajan, etc. etc.

The only certainties are Gambhir, Dhoni and maybe Rohit.

The year 2000 is the 21st century lol

It would be really tough making an ODI XI simply because of the quality on display but a test XI would be easier to make...because guys like tendy, dravid etc would be excluded. Much like Pak it would be a bit of an inexperienced side.

India:

ODI

SRT
Sehwag
Kohli
Gambhir
Yuvraj
Dhoni (C)
Raina
Kumble
Zak
Nehra
Bumrah

Just replaced Munaf with Bumrah, and Kumble with Harbhajan in the world cup winning side. Shuffled the batting order two. Cant have anyone else except Mr. Kohli at 3.

Test

Sehwag
Gambhir
Dravid
Tendulkar
Laxman
Ganguly (C)
Dhoni
Ashwin
Jadeja/Shami
Bhuvi
Zak

Amazing that Kohli cant get into the Test XI. Needs to match Ganguly in captaincy to replace him. Don’t want Dhoni as captain. Need a strong captain.

Must say, very strong teams.

Notable omissions:
ODIs: Rohit (3 time double centurion), Dhawan (consistently the best ODI opener this time), and Ganguly (fantastic ODI captain and one of the all time best openers)
Tests: Kohli, Rahane, Kumble, and Harbhajan

Dravid, Ganguly etc. played most of their career after 2000. They made their debuts in 1996 and played till 2008 (Ganguly) and 2012 (Dravid). Tendulkar is borderline as his career is equally split between pre and post 2000. Zak, Yuvi and a few other made their debuts in 2000.

Edit: my bad, you want only post 2000 debutants. Any way, made too much effort to change now. :P

Nope. The 21st century begins from Jan 1, 2001.

You are right! Sorry my head skipped to decades rather than centuries.

lol I see you corrected yourself. So , just take out the ineligible players and put in others, make a true 21st century side, will be interesting.

I'm gonna do a test side for England -

1. A. Cook
2. A. Strauss c
3. I. Bell
4. J. Root
5. K. Pietersen
6. M. Prior wk
7. B. Stokes
8. G. Swann
9. S. Broad
10. S. Harmison
11. J. Anderson

India ODIs
-Pujara
-Jaffer
-Abheejit Kale
-Rohan Gavaskar
-Ratra (wk)
-Binny
-Vinaykumar
-Joginder
-Rasool
-Dinda
-VRV Singh

Bench-
JP Yadav
SS Das
Pankaj Singh
Manprit Gony

Flintoff had more impact than Stokes

I would go with Trescothick over Strauss. A criminally underrated opener, averages over 50 in England which is amazing.

Hoggard over Harmison as well.

Time for an England ODI XI -

1. A. Hales
2. J. Bairstow wk
3. J. Root
4. K. Pietersen
5. E. Morgan c
6. J. Buttler
7. B. Stokes
8. A. Rashid
9. S. Broad
10. L. Plunkett
11. J. Anderson

Very similar to the side playing now, and why not when it's the best England have ever had? Add to that Jimmy and Broad (imagine if they were part of the current set up) and you have a terrific ODI side.

Let's look at an Indian ODI XI -

1. S. Dhawan
2. R. Sharma
3. V. Kohli
4. S. Raina
5. Y. Singh
6. MS Dhoni c/wk
7. R. Jadeja
8. H. Pandya
9. I. Pathan
10. M. Shami
11. B. Kumar

Barely....by a few months. Going by your reasoning then Younis Khan debuted pre 21st century.

You are a 100% correct. I need to change that but I can't edit anymore so I'll do a full revamp post later.

Maybe Katich for Rogers otherwise pretty much spot on.

I assumed Katich made his debut in the 90s but now that you mentioned him I checked and he makes the cutoff. Definitely Katich over Rogers.

Good one. Can you do a world XI?

Pakistan tests:

1) Azhar Ali
2) Salman Butt
3) Younis Khan
4) Mohammad Yousuf (It was Youhana who played in the 90s, not Yousuf).
5) Misbah ul Haq (c)
6) Asad Shafiq
7) Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk)
8) Mohammad Amir
9) Mohammad Asif
10) Yasir Shah
11) Saeed Ajmal

South Africa tests:

1) Graeme Smith (c)

9) Dale Steyn
10) Kagiso Rabada
11) Morne Morkel

NZ ODIs

1. Guptill
2. McCullum (c & wk)
3. Williamson
4. Taylor
5. Elliott
6. Styris
7. Oram
8. Santner
9. Mills
10. Bond
11. Boult

I'll try to do a SL one.

Replace Nehra with BK or some spinner.

I would pick Kuldeep or Jaddu over Nehra who is an average bowler and a mediocre fielder.

South Africa Test XI -

1. G. Smith c
2. D. Elgar
3. H. Amla
4. AB. de Villiers
5. F. du Plessis
6. A. Prince
7. Q. de Kock wk
8. K. Maharaj
9. V. Philander
10. M. Morkel
11. D. Steyn

Rabada just misses out but could get in there instead of a spinner but I think it's always important to have a solid spinner in the side.

ODI XI -

1. G. Smith c
2. H. Amla
3. AB. de Villiers
4. F. du Plessis
5. JP. Duminy
6. Q. de Kock wk
7. R. Roussouw
8. K. Rabada
9. I. Tahir
10. M. Morkel
11. D. Steyn

I'm gonna have a stab at a world Test XI, which is likely to change in the future -

1. A. Cook
2. G. Smith c
3. H. Amla
4. AB. de Villiers
5. K. Pietersen
6. M. Prior wk
7. B. Stokes
8. S. Ajmal
9. S. Broad
10. D. Steyn
11. J. Anderson

Root, Smith, Williamson, Kohli, Morkel, Philander, Starc, Johnson, and Swann are unlucky not to have a place in here.
