Just in: Thailand launches air strikes on Cambodian military targets

Cambodia and Thailand are literally breaking out into war and no one is talking about it

----------------------------

A Thai F-16 fighter jet has bombed targets in Cambodia as weeks of tension over a border dispute escalated into clashes that have killed at least two Thai civilians.

Of the six F-16 fighter jets that Thailand readied to deploy along the disputed border, one of the aircraft fired into Cambodia and destroyed a military target, the Thai army said.

Both countries accused each other of starting the clash early on Thursday.

"We have used air power against military targets as planned," Thai army deputy spokesperson Richa Suksuwanon told reporters. Thailand also closed its border with Cambodia.

Cambodia's defence ministry said the jets dropped two bombs on a road, condemning Thailand's "reckless and brutal military aggression".

It accused its neighbour of opening fire on its troops and violating an agreement designed to de-escalate tension.

The skirmishes came after Thailand recalled its ambassador to Cambodia late on Wednesday and said it would expel Cambodia's envoy in Bangkok, after a second Thai soldier in the space of a week lost a limb to a landmine that Bangkok alleged had been laid recently in the disputed area.

Thai residents in the Surin border province fled to shelters built of concrete and fortified with sandbags and car tires as the two countries exchanged fire.

"How many rounds have been fired? It's countless," an unidentified woman told the Thai Public Broadcasting Service while hiding in the shelter with gunfire and explosions heard intermittently in the background.

For more than a century, Thailand and Cambodia have contested sovereignty at various undemarcated points along their 817km land border, which has led to skirmishes over several years and at least a dozen deaths, including during a week-long exchange of artillery in 2011.

Tensions were reignited in May following the killing of a Cambodian soldier during a brief exchange of gunfire, which escalated into a full-blown diplomatic crisis and now has triggered armed clashes.

Clashes took place near disputed temple

The clashes began early on Thursday near the disputed Ta Moan Thom temple along the eastern border between Thailand and Cambodia, around 360km from the Thai capital Bangkok.

"Artillery shell fell on people's homes," Sutthirot Charoenthanasak, district chief of Kabcheing in Surin province, told Reuters, describing the firing by the Cambodian side.

"Two people have died," he said, adding that district authorities had evacuated 40,000 civilians from 86 villages near the border to safer locations.

Thailand's military said Cambodia deployed a surveillance drone before sending troops with heavy weapons to an area near the temple.

Cambodian troops opened fire, and two Thai soldiers were wounded, a Thai army spokesperson said, adding Cambodia had used multiple weapons, including rocket launchers.

A spokesperson for Cambodia's defence ministry, however, said there had been an unprovoked incursion by Thai troops and Cambodian forces had responded in self-defence.

Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said the situation was delicate. "We have to be careful," he told reporters. "We will follow international law."

An attempt by Thai premier Paetongtarn Shinawatra to resolve the recent tensions via a call with Cambodia's influential former prime minister Hun Sen, the contents of which were leaked, kicked off a political storm in Thailand, leading to her suspension by a court.

Fighting erupted at six locations along entire length of border, says Thai military

Clashes have been reported along the disputed frontier between Cambodia and Thailand, military officials said.

Thai military officials said clashes, involving small arms and heavy weapons, have since spread along the frontline affecting a total of six locations. This includes sites in Surin province, Sisaket and Ubon Ratchathani.

The violence began Thursday morning local time at the ancient, disputed Ta Muen Thom temple site in Thailand’s Surin province, but it is also claimed by Cambodia. Both countries accused their neighbor of firing the first salvo.

Though Cambodia hasn’t acknowledged all six locations, its Defense Ministry said all affected areas “are within Cambodian territory … and are actively protected by Cambodian forces.”

My advice to both sides is if you have Rafael don't use it, it's not worth the global humiliation of having 6 shot down.

If you need the phone number of Trump to request a ceasefire then please consult PM Modi of India.

A new war is approaching: Heavy fighting broke out on the border between Thailand and Cambodia, — CNN.

The Royal Cambodian Army shelled several Thai border towns with multiple rocket launchers.
In response, Thailand closed its border with Cambodia because of these attacks.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said the shelling was in response to actions by the Thai army near temples in the provinces of Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, and Ubon Ratchathani.
At least one civilian was killed, and seven soldiers were injured by gunfire and artillery fire.
Fighting was reported at six locations along the disputed border with northeastern Thailand.
The Thai army said it carried out airstrikes on two Cambodian military installations.

Relations between the two countries have escalated in recent months due to an armed conflict in territory claimed by both sides.
The conflict is part of a decades-long border dispute, particularly over the Preah Vihear temple.
Similar clashes occurred in 2008 and 2011.

@DeadlyVenom hope this is clear things for you

Twelve killed in Thailand-Cambodia military clashes on disputed border

Clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops at their disputed border have killed at least 12 people, Thai authorities say.

The fighting marks an escalation of a dispute between the two South East Asian neighbours that dates back more than a century.

Most of the casualties were civilians from three Thai provinces, according to Thailand's army, which also reported that several people were wounded. Cambodia has yet to confirm whether it suffered any casualties.

Both sides exchanged gunfire early on Thursday, with each claiming the other had fired the first shot. It escalated quickly, with Thailand accusing Cambodia of firing rockets and Bangkok carrying out air strikes on Cambodian military targets.

Thailand has closed its border with Cambodia, while Cambodia has downgraded its ties with Thailand, accusing its military of using "excessive force".

Both countries have asked their citizens near the border to leave the areas, with Thailand evacuating 40,000 civilians to safer locations.

"[The fighting] is really serious. We're in the middle of evacuating," Sutian Phiwchan, a local resident of Ban Dan district in Thailand's Buriram province near the Cambodian border, told the BBC.

Thai authorities said that a total of 11 civilians - including an eight-year-old and a 15-year-old - as well as one military personnel have been killed in the Surin, Ubon Ratchathani and Srisaket provinces.

Thailand and Cambodia have given differing versions of what happened.

Thailand's National Security Council (NSC) claims that just after 07:30 local time (00:30GMT) on Thursday, Cambodia's military deployed drones to conduct surveillance of Thai troops near the border.

Shortly afterwards, Cambodian military personnel carrying rocket-propelled grenades gathered near the border. Soldiers on the Thai side attempted negotiations by shouting, but were unsuccessful, the NSC spokesman said, adding that Cambodian soldiers opened fire at around 08:20, forcing the Thai side to retaliate.

Thailand has accused Cambodia of deploying heavy weapons, including BM-21 rocket launchers and artillery, causing damage to homes and public facilities including a hospital and a petrol station along the Thai side of the border.

Meanwhile, Cambodia claims that Thai soldiers initiated the conflict at around 06:30, when they violated a prior agreement by advancing on a Khmer-Hindu temple near the border and placing barbed wire around its base.

Thai soldiers then deployed a drone just after 07:00, and fired shots "into the air" at around 08:30, according to Maly Socheata, a spokesperson from Cambodia's Ministry of National Defence.

At 08:46, Thai soldiers "pre-emptively" opened fire on Cambodian troops, leaving them no choice but to exercise their right to self-defence, according to the Phnom Penh Post newspaper quoting Socheata.

Socheata further accused Thailand of deploying excessive troops, using heavy weapons and carrying out air strikes on Cambodian territory.

Why are Thailand and Cambodia fighting?

The dispute dates back to more than a hundred years ago, when the borders of the two nations were drawn after the French occupation of Cambodia.

Things officially became hostile in 2008, when Cambodia tried to register an 11th Century temple located in the disputed area as a Unesco World Heritage Site - a move that was met with heated protest from Thailand.

There were sporadic clashes over the years which saw soldiers and civilians killed on both sides.

The latest tensions ramped up in May after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a clash. This plunged bilateral ties to their lowest point in more than a decade.

In the past two months, both countries have imposed border restrictions on one another. Cambodia banned imports from Thailand such as fruits and vegetables, and stopped importing power and internet services.

Both countries have also strengthened troop presence along the border in recent weeks.

Where is the conflict headed?

Thailand's acting premier Phumtham Wechayachai said that its dispute with Cambodia remains "delicate", and must be addressed with care and in line with international law.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said his country wants to resolve the dispute peacefully - adding, however, that it has "no choice" but to "respond with armed force against armed aggression".

Serious exchanges of fire between the two countries have de-escalated relatively quickly.

But while it appears the current fighting is unlikely to blow up into a full-scale war, both countries currently lack leadership with enough strength and confidence to pull back from this confrontation.

Hun Manet, the son of a former strongman, does not yet have his own authority - and Hun Sen, his father, appears willing to push this conflict further in order to burnish his own nationalist credentials.

In Thailand, there is a shaky coalition government backed by another former strongman, Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thaksin believed he had a close personal relationship with Hun Sen and his family, and feels betrayed by Hun Sen's decision to leak a private conversation which led to his daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, being suspended as prime minister.

Please refrain from racial slurs. If some Pakistani, regretably, calls you a urine-drinking pajeet, you will rightly be offended, and I would even intervene on your behalf, so please try to get your point across without slurs.

Apologies for using the word. But I don't mind being called pajeet or whatever else we are being called. So as that word is not censored here .it is ok with me personally.

Is defence the only way to prop up economy around the world?

Also I didn’t even know Cambodia and Thailand had so many issues between them that it escalated to this extent.

Battles between T-55 and Type-59 Tanks with the Royal Cambodian Army and T-84 and M60 Tanks of the Royal Thai Army are reported to be taking place on the border between the two countries near Ta Thav.

Yeah this level of violence was no way on the cards.
Its crazy how many wars have been normalized recently. We all knew a global order didn't really exist but seeing an imaginary one vanish before our eyes is crazy.

There is major upheaval all over the Middle East, Russia has taken control of territories all over eastern Europe, recent Pakistan India war, and all sorts of craziness in African countries. Pakistan and Iran even had a one day skirmish at one point.

This could be economical as well, Tariffs to soon hit both these countries, Thailand democracy is a big joke.

Lockheed surprisingly showed a very low profit yesterday.

At least 12 killed in Thai-Cambodia border dispute escalation

At least 12 people – mostly Thai civilians – have been confirmed killed in clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops on the two nations' shared border, marking an escalation of a dispute which goes back over 100 years, and has been simmering for several months.

Artillery and rockets have been fired from Cambodia, and Thailand has deployed fighter jets.

While officials in Bangkok have blamed the attack on Cambodian aggression, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet says Thailand launched a pre-mediated assault.

Nearby countries have called for a de-escalation, with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim saying he would speak to both countries by the end of the day.

We are going to bring our live coverage to a close now, but you can keep up with what’s happening in our news story.

No need for this. Have a proper Muay Thai man to man combat competition between the leaders. Jo jeeta wohi sinkander

Enough of these modern day leaders hiding in bunkers and bathrooms while they send young men to their death in meaningless power grab wars.

Cambodia has reached out to Pakistan for assistance and to summon the security council of the United Nations.

Pakistan is seen as a key super power in the region.

@emranabbas @sweep_shot @Rana
Pakistan has played a significant role as a peacemaker, even managing to persuade Trump to urge Israel to agree to a ceasefire during the Israel-Iran conflict.

Great satire on pak though. Pak is the President of the Security Council for July 2025.so they reached out to pak.
I don't think you are understanding the point.

You guys are trying to isolate Pakistan...yet Pakistan is president of the SC. How is the isolation going?

I only know about the enmity between both nations over Angkorwat an ancient Hindu temple. They both lay claim to it.

Cambodia is a poor country. War should be the last of their priorities.

Pakistan really is the tribal chief of South Asia, hope it does its role of being Bhai Saab of South Asia and makes peace between these two.

The presidency rotates monthly among the 15 member states of the Security Council in English alphabetical order. Nothing special there.

Cambodia calls for ceasefire with Thailand, AFP reports

Cambodia called for a ceasefire with Thailand, AFP reported on Friday, citing Chhea Keo, the country's ambassador to the United Nations.

"Cambodia asked for an immediate ceasefire -- unconditionally -- and we also call for the peaceful solution of the dispute," AFP said in a post, opens new tab on X quoting Keo, who made the statement following a closed meeting of the Security Council attended by Cambodia and Thailand.

Thailand and Cambodia exchanged heavy artillery fire for a second day on Friday as border fighting intensified and spread, while Cambodia's leader said Thailand had agreed to a Malaysian ceasefire proposal but then backed down.

Trump likened proposed ceasefire between these two countries fighting over a mandir according to @Devadwal as similar to the ceasefire requested by India in the Indian Pakistan conflict.

Thailand and Cambodia thank Trump for mediation, but shelling continues

Donald Trump said on Saturday that he had called the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand, pressing them for an immediate ceasefire following border clashes.

At the beginning of a private visit to his Scottish golf courses, the US president wrote on Truth Social that both nations "have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!"

Both countries thanked him for his concern and efforts. Cambodia has accepted his request for a ceasefire, while Thailand stressed the need for a dialogue between the two countries.

After the US president's calls, however, shelling continued along the border overnight.

The response from the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia to Trump's phone calls has been positive, yet neither has changed its position.

Cambodia had already proposed a ceasefire; its military is weaker than Thailand's and it has been losing ground and equipment to the Thai artillery bombardments and air strikes.

"I made it clear to [Trump] that Cambodia agreed with the proposal for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between the two armed forces," Cambodian PM Hun Manet said after the phone call, adding that Trump's mediation "will truly help protect the lives of many soldiers and civilians".

On the other hand, Thailand says it is willing to consider a ceasefire, but is sticking to its previous demand that dialogue with Cambodia must come first.

Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai "thanked President Trump for his concern and expressed that Thailand agrees in principle to have a ceasefire in place. However, Thailand would like to see sincere intention from the Cambodian side," the Thai foreign ministry said in a statement.

At least 33 soldiers and civilians have been killed while thousands of Thai and Cambodian nationals have been displaced since fighting broke out on 24 July.

No peace, no trade talks

Trump said that he looked forward to resuming trade talks with Cambodia and Thailand though it wasn't appropriate to hold discussions until the "fighting STOPS".

He has intervened a week before US tariffs on Cambodia and Thailand are due to come into force.

From 1 August, businesses in the US shipping in goods from Thailand or Cambodia will have to pay a 36% tax unless an agreement can be reached before then.

It is not clear how Trump has become involved in the situation, given that just a day ago Thailand's foreign minister Maris Sangiampongsa said: "I don't think we need any mediation from a third country yet."

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had previously offered to facilitate talks between Thailand and Cambodia.

Earlier on Saturday, Cambodia had already called for "immediate" ceasefire with Thailand and a peaceful resolution to the dispute.

After teeing off at his luxury resort Trump Turnberry in South Ayrshire, the US president said that he had spoken to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Phumtham.

"When all is done, and peace is at hand, I look forward to concluding our Trading Agreements with both!" Trump wrote.

Thailand and Cambodia have each accused the other of firing first in this latest clash.

Thailand claims fighting began when Cambodia's military deployed drones to conduct surveillance of Thai troops near the border.

Cambodia alleges that Thai soldiers violated a prior agreement by advancing on a Khmer-Hindu temple.

The dispute between the two countries dates back more than a century, when the borders of the two nations were drawn after the French occupation of Cambodia.

Thailand accuses Cambodia of violating hours-old ceasefire

Thailand has accused Cambodia of "deliberately" violating a ceasefire the two countries had agreed on Monday to end border clashes that have killed at least 33 people and displaced thousands.

It's a shaky start for the ceasefire, which was meant to bring an end to five days of bombardment and rocket attacks along the shared border.

The Thai military says it stopped firing after midnight, but that it continued to receive gunfire from the Cambodian side "at multiple locations" up until this morning.

But Cambodia's defence ministry told the AFP news agency that there had been "no armed clashes" between the two sides since the ceasefire began at midnight.

A meeting between local commanders which was part of the ceasefire agreement has been postponed twice, and may not happen at all.

Tensions between the South East Asian countries over their century-old disputed border ramped up in May when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a clash.

They escalated into a full-scale conflict last week after five Thai soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion. Thailand closed some of its border crossings, expelled the Cambodian ambassador and recalled its own from Phnom Penh.

After the two sides exchanged gunfire early on Thursday, Cambodia fired multiple rockets into Thailand, killing several civilians.

More civilians died on both sides in the following days, and tens of thousands more were evacuated to shelters.

Intense exchanges of fire between the two armies continued up to midnight on Monday, the deadline for the ceasefire, with Thailand launching more air strikes on Cambodian positions.

But on Tuesday morning, before Thailand alleged the ceasefire had been violated, Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet said that the "frontlines have eased" since midnight.

Under the agreement, both sides had agreed to pull back their armies and to accept some kind of independent monitoring to prevent further clashes.

Hun Manet and his Thai counterpart Phumtham Wechayachai had met on Monday in Malaysia in a meeting brokered by its leader Anwar Ibrahim.

An outgunned Cambodia had been pushing for a ceasefire and its leader called it a very good meeting.

Thailand, which had initially been reluctant to negotiate, agreed after US President Donald Trump threatened to halt talks over tariffs until Thailand and Cambodia stopped fighting.

A dispute going back decades

In fact, the argument between Thailand and Cambodia dates back more than a century, when the borders of the two nations were drawn after the French occupation of Cambodia.

Things officially became hostile in 2008, when Cambodia tried to register an 11th Century temple located in the disputed area as a Unesco World Heritage Site - a move that was met with heated protest from Thailand.

Over the years there have been sporadic clashes that have seen soldiers and civilians killed on both sides.
