What's new

The 2nd Test between Pakistan (408 & 304/9) & NZ (449 & 277/5d) ends in a draw - Series drawn 0-0

When the scores are this close, they should just play until someone wins.

No wonder non-cricket people think test cricket is a farce.

Pakistan has restored some pride after the humiliation against England.

That dumb review time wasting should not have been let go of. Goes against the spirit of the game.

If Agha didn't give his wicket away I think Pakistan win this.

Unfortunately we don't have players with a steady head on their shoulders.

good intense last day...this is what TC is all about
for me MOM is Sarf...what an fighting innings...a true fighter- what a comeb ack....

Babas taking Pak cricket fr a ride.. smiling like his just won a 50 over wrld cup.. knws his pathetic captaincy has just been saved.

Pakistan were winning it easy when Sarfaraz and Salman were at crease.

NZ would have backed themselves to win it after Sarfaraz was dismissed.

Overall a good stalemate.

Sarfraz saved Pakistan from 0-2. Difference between NZ and England attack Mark wood. You need express bowler on a placid track. Anyway good try by both sides.

Robbed of a grandstand finish by the light. All that is wrong with test cricket.

All results were possible. A good declaration by New Zealand but was an awful run chase by Pakistan. The top sides in cricket would have chased that down.

Babar I guess clings onto his captaincy and more mediocre results will dog this team.

Yep that was it . Sarfraz and him would have done with ease

Is this the first time you've watched Pakistan play in the last 2-3 years? :))
Pitch was flat, 319 should have been a walk in the park. Only one batsmen showed up and you almost chased it down.

was turning out to be an iconic test match until aleem dar decided against it. now this remains as just another one of the million draws in pak. poor stuff from umpires. should've allowed the remaining 3 overs.

THey unexpectedly dismissed Sarfraz. Guy who is so fluent against spin got out at the wrong time. Naseem with a couple of lusty blows killed the NZ's possibility of win.

Next home Test series against the West Indies in 2024. We will be a much stronger and dangerous team by then.

Aleem Dar should get test player of the 2022-23 season. Played a pivotal role for visiting teams to Pakistan.

Pak and NZ. Two teams with no winning mentality.

Lol, you are comparing current Test champion team with this talent-less pakistani team?

Kiwis tried to win when declaring. Pakistan would not have declared like this. In the end Sarfraz and light saved Pakistan, was only one deserving winner here.

Neither players nor umpires have any say in it. It is the reading.

Realistically a decent Test team would have chased in the 2 Tests vs England and today. Shame we are truly dreadful.

Tame ending

Should have just played with the lights on

Yes, should have played on. There was no physical danger to the two batsman. Only call off play if the bowlers are bowling short pitch stuff.

they've checked the reading an over before. not at the time of calling it off. now one can say that the reading was already too low and that extra over was already stretching it. doesn't matter how you put it now, an exciting match ended in a tame draw and left a bitter taste to many watching for an exciting finish and will remain one of the forgotten matches. and the series ends in a 0-0 draw, gained nothing.

Congrats Pakistan! Credit goes to Sarfaraz for playing an epic knock and to NZ for giving a sporting target. NZ made a match out of this.

This reminds me of Johannusburg test against India. India set a target of 458. An epic partnership between Faf and ABDV almost saw them through. Faf's late run out snuffed SA's hope. Last over of the day 16 runs to get. Steyn hit a six of the last ball. SA reached 450/7 ended in draw.

Naseem shah has the clutch gene.
Didnt watch this series tho. Completely lost interest in home matches.
Pakistan is killing test cricket.

No. If the fast bowlers are not allowed to bowl and NZ refuses it match will be called off. NZ could have called off the match long back based on that. They knew Pakistan's win gone out of the window moment the umpire told them not to use pace bowling. SO they gambled with spinners.

Surprised by the result especially after the first session which went to NZ, how could NZ fail to finish the job considering the position they were in? Tim Southee should be kicking himself because NZ lost a golden opportunity

Great test match! Really close.

With Bazball, NZ would have won I think.

Sarfraz's innings shocked Southee like for 4th time. Line and length bowlers won't cut it. You need someone sharp like Mark Wood. Or atleats you should reverse like Anderson/Robinson.

Got away. Pak never deserved to win this match.

Still so much to do. I mean not winning tests at home is just so bad!

Hopefully, England, Australia and other top teams will not be touring Pakistan in the next few years. It will be a good time to bounce back playing against mid to low level teams.

Babar Azam | Pakistan captain - The plan was to be careful and assess according to the situation. Sarfaraz, Saud and Salman batted well. We just wanted to keep it simple and see where it takes us, we needed a big partnership and that's what we got in the middle-order. The game changed a bit after the dismissal of Salman Agha (we decided to pull the shutters down on the chase). As a captain, there have been quite some positives, we need to polish those well and continue doing well. It was a dream comeback from Sarfi bhai, we kept backing him and the way he did when the opportunity came, it's very heartening to see. This will lift his confidence immensely.

Sarfaraz Ahmed | Player of the Match | Player of the Series - It was a great comeback, I've been part of the team for a long while, but I was waiting for a chance in the playing XI. The management gave me a lot of confidence when I went out to bat, thankful for everyone for keeping faith in me. The plan was to play according to the merit of the ball, a few more runs here and there, the result could have been different. Batting in the 4th innings anywhere is a challenge and I think this is the best out of my four hundreds. Thankful for the support from the Karachi crowd, please keep supporting us in the upcoming ODI series as well

Tim Southee | NewZealand captain - (On the final session) It came down to those last moments, great end to ten days of pretty tough toil. We got ourselves to push for a win but Sarfaraz played with intent and took the game away from us in the second session. Funny game, we saw in the end it was still up for grabs. Sodhi's comeback after not playing Tests for a long time and he bowled very well and we are thrilled for him Bracewell also bowled very well. We knew from the nature of the surface that things could happen late in the Test but the way Sarfaraz batted took the game away from us. He was very busy and he was the difference or else the game could have gone the other way round. (On his outing as captain) You approach every Test to win. Tough tour to play 10 days in the same ground. We will try to chip in with some wins in the ODI's.

Pakistan bowling is a massive let down. Bracewell, Ajaz patel, Sodhi, Mark wood they all feast on against this bowlers.

Why on earth you guys hyped so much this pathetic , useless, 2nd tier level club cricketer, its beyond me.
I said it when he came to bat if Hasan Ali comes to bat consider Pakistaani loss Abrar and Naseem have more sense to bat than this tulley baz. If he did not get dismissed Sarfraz would had continued to bat fluently and stolen the win for Pakistan

Good result..glad we fought till the bitter end. Love that sarfaraz has shown what a street fighter he is. We have the basis of a good side here..

At Karachi National Stadium: New Zealand 449 and 277-5 declared drew with Pakistan 408 and 304-9 (Sarfaraz Ahmed 118, Shan Masood 35; Michael Bracewell 4-75). Series drawn 0-0.

For the second time in a week, New Zealand have been unable to bowl out Pakistan on the last day to win a test match.

Bad light had the final say again in Karachi on the last day of the second test in the two-game series, with stumps called prematurely when both sides were in sight of victory.

The Black Caps still required one wicket – and the hosts needed 15 runs – for the win when stumps were called with three scheduled overs still left unbowled.

Pakistan were 304-9, with wicketkeeper-batter Sarfaraz Ahmed the key contributor as his 118 from 176 balls frustrated New Zealand’s quest for victory.

The first test was drawn at the same venue last week, meaning the series was tied 0-0.

The hosts began the final day in desperate trouble, two wickets down without a run on the board in their second innings. They’d been set a target of 319 to win the test and the series when New Zealand declared late on day four.

Pakistan lost three further wickets before the lunch break – mostly through their own ill-discipline – leaving the tourists still heavily favoured.

But veteran Sarfaraz looked at one stage as if he was going to spearhead a remarkable win for the hosts, before falling in the 87th of 90 overs as he also began to run out of partners.

In the first test which finished a week ago at the same venue, New Zealand were unable to take the eight second-innings wickets required to set up victory – which would have been just their third test win in Pakistan.

The host side entered the test series shortly after being dispatched 3-0 in their home test series against England, giving them four consecutive test defeats in Pakistan for the first time in their history after Australia sealed a 1-0 series win previously.

Despite being ripe for the picking, New Zealand were unable to make the decisive moves on the final day on pitches at the Karachi National Stadium which made wickets for the bowlers difficult to capture.

Under new captain Tim Southee, the tourists had periods of hesitancy and caution when more aggression may have rewarded them with a clean sweep of the series as England had managed prior.

Sarfaraz and Saud Shakeel put on 123 for the sixth wicket, as Pakistan didn’t lose a wicket in the second session. Shakeel made 32 from 146 balls, which slowed New Zealand’s chase for victory but also had a similar impact for the hosts.

When the home side reached 273 for six in the final session, a Pakistan win looked the most likely outcome, but Agha Salman perished with an ugly and unnecessary heave across the line when Sarfaraz looked capable of playing the guiding hand.

Big moment

The umpires calling stumps with 18 balls still left to produce a memorable result.

New Zealand were bowling spin, so there were no dangerous circumstances, and both sides were chasing a thrilling and series-clinching victory. To halt matters when they did made no sense.

Best with the bat

Sarfaraz’s previous test ton came in 2014 – the year he scored all three centuries he had prior to the final day. The former captain, only recalled recently, may have had his moments with his keeping but was a constant thorn for the Black Caps with the bat.

He mixed his usual positivity with stubborn defence when required to get the hosts within touching distance of what would have been a record last-innings pursuit of victory in Pakistan.

Best with the ball

Michael Bracewell isn’t regarded as a frontline spin bowler, yet Southee often went to the offie for wickets and he responded with 4-75 off 20 overs, including the scalps of Sarfaraz and skipper Babar Azam.

Big picture

New Zealand, world champions in 2021, have now gone six tests without a win. Their next five-day opponents are England, who ended 2022 with five successive victories and wins in nine of their last 10 tests.

Stuff NZ

Pakistan just about held on in Karachi late on day five to eke out a draw against New Zealand, but their winless home streak extended to eight Test matches with the latest result.

For the second time in their Test history, Pakistan drew a Test match with just one wicket remaining as the ICC World Test Championship series against New Zealand ended in a 0-0 draw.

With light fading in Karachi on day five, all four results were still on the cards. Pakistan were 15 runs away from a win and New Zealand just needed one wicket to win a Test series in Pakistan for the first time in more than fifty years.

Sarfaraz Ahmed, on a golden run since his comeback into the Test side this series, made his first Test century in nine years to keep Pakistan in the hunt after New Zealand had them at 0/2 at stumps on day four.

At 80/5, New Zealand seemed to be on course for a win when Sarfaraz and Saud Shakeel came together to resurrect Pakistan's innings with a century stand.

When that stand was broken after tea, New Zealand yet again edged ahead but Agha Salman hung around with Sarfaraz to push the game into the final hour.

The visitors clawed back into the contest with three wickets in the space of five overs late in the day, including that of Sarfaraz. But Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed held on and Naseem even smashed a six and a four an over before it was called off to threaten a late Pakistan heist.

Thrillers in Pakistan continue with bold declarations

Pakistan have now gone eight home Tests with no wins. Their last victory on home soil came against South Africa in Rawalpindi in February 2021.

But, there's been no shortage of drama in the Test matches in the country. Last month, a bold declaration from Ben Stokes opened up the Rawalpindi Test that England won by 74 runs to start their series on a winning note.

Babar Azam explains shock declaration call

In the last Test against New Zealand, Babar Azam threw caution to the wind by declaring with about 15 overs left in the day and New Zealand needing 138 runs. The New Zealand batters came out all guns blazing and reached 61/1 in 7.3 overs before bad light called off play.

Little changed in 2023 as Tim Southee became the third captain to make a brazen declaration call in the country. Declaring at 277/5, Southee set Pakistan a target of 318 with more than a day left in the Test and we once again witnessed a dramatic Test match that could have swung whichever way.

Not losing a series in the sub-continent is a bit of an achievement for SENA teams. Its like an Asian team no losing a series in SENA.

I still recall one of the ATG SA side in the 2000s playing for draw from day 1 in India. Australia was the only exception. They always play for a win regardless of conditions. Recently England has joined them.

That's one reason that SA team will never be considered amongst the GOAT test teams.

There's only two. Aus(late 90s-2000s) and WI(mid 70s-80s)

Great knock by Sarfraz, and Im 100% sure Saud was told to stay and occupy the crease which he tried ..

Have seen Saud play many match winning knocks in 4th inns at a very good rate in domestics.

This was his home ground and he is capable of doing that.. but his snail-paced knock made sure NZ doesnt lose..

His SR was 20 less than that of Azhar Ali.. if he batted at atleast Azhar ali's SR say 35 , Pakistan would be home winning this easily even if they lost a few wickets in the end...

Saud should have shown more intent by picking up singles and rotated the strike however if he lost his wicket earlier then they would have proberly lost.

Saud shakeels turtle inns cost us match here.

Management to blame for this, young player asked to bat like he did which is not his natural game..

He wouldnt play that slow, had many 4th inns match winning knock in domestics at good pace similar to sarfi's today..

He could have easily batted at 40-50 SR but he was told to keep quiet and occupy the crease for hours which he did.
