There's a lot of talk about this test (more so than the one Pakistan won) so let's see where Pakistan lost this match and where the Windies won it.

First off, it is important to note that the WI have never lost to an Asian side at Bridgetown. Why is that? Maybe it's the nature of the pitch? Or maybe it's just one of those things you can't explain but there are certain points that should be looked at. I picked out the 3 main points for both sides.

Pakistan -

1. A negative approach in the field by both the captain and the bowlers. The guiltiest party is Yasir Shah, who, for over after over, repeated the mistake from the Australia tour and bowled a negative line with a packed leg side field. He was obsessed with the rough and for some reason, bowled a line where the lbw was out of the question and if the batsman was smart, as some of them were, they could easily knock the ball away for a single.

Eventually, when Shah came over the wicket, the complexion of the game changed drastically and wickets fell in quick succession. Why did none of the senior players, in a team filled with Misbah (captain), Khan, Sarfraz (future captain) and Ali not get in Shah's ears and tell him to try something different? Were they comfortable with the lead the Windied were racking up? Or were they taking a backseat and letting someone else take the blame? THE crucial mistake of the game and THE moment that led to WI putting in a match winning lead.

2. The senior batsmen refused to step up and take the initiative. Yes Misbah struck a few beautiful boundaries but he was content with the pace his team were playing at. It looked like they were scrapping together runs to maintain an average, rather than advance against mediocre bowlers to win a game. If I can use one word to describe their spinless performance, it would be pathetic.

3. Misbah Ul-Haq. Remember that name. A terrific man manager and a great ambassador for the sport but as I have long stated, an inert and impotent test captain (think Dhoni but even less proactive). He refused to budge with his tactics of having players pushed out, rather than putting in players in slips and close in. Even when the WI were down and seemingly out, he refused, yet again, to turn the screw and allowed their batsmen to find form and to work the single...again and again. For a man of his age and his experience, in his last test series, against a midling test side, it was poor. One wonders what he spent 5 days thinking about.

West Indies -

1. Resilience. This is what their batsmen and bowlers showed at a time when their skillset and fitness was letting them down. No matter how they dropped catches or bowled their no balls, there was a grit and determination that Pakistan usually shows but here the tables were turned. Is that down to the captain, who knows? But that leads me to point 2.

2. Jason Holder. Captain of the match. When Pakistan started to crumble and lost wickets in clumps across both innings, he persisted with an adage as old as test cricket itself "wickets win you matches". He knew his only hope was striking first and striking quickly, so even as Amir struck boundaries, he kept more than one slip in and backed his bowlers to pick up the wickets...because if they can't, then what's the point of saving runs? There was enough time for Pakistan to scramble their way to a win, so why not go all out.

Holder learned how to strangle a team from Misbah but he turned the scres by himself. It reminded me of Cook learning from McCullum across the two test series between New Zealand in England. Maybe now Misbah can learn something from Holder.

3. Roston Chase. As much as this is a team sport, often time it is individuals who stand up to be counted and in this case, Chase worked a miracle. He scored a 131 runs when the next best was 58, out of a total of 312. Best of all, he refused to be cowed and he refused to be afraid. He went at a sr of 62 and looked to impose himself, rather than hide away from responsibility. The Pakistani bowlers and fielders sat in, in the typical Misbah dashion, in the hopes of the opposition making mistakes, Chase did not make many. As early as the second day, he had handed part of the game to his team.

Good post and excellent points.

The selection of Shadab was a mistake too. 2 leg spinners rarely work. Ashgar should have been given a chance ahead of Shadab. He is a left armer and could have kept one end tight.
Shadab's time will come but let him develop in the limited overs version of the game.

Shadab as a main part of a four-man attack didn't work. We were essentially playing with three proper bowlers and a fifth bowler.

Hope's knock in the second innings was seriously good.

All valid points.

Thing with Shadab is, he is so young and so talented, there is no need to rush him into tests. I think Hassan Ali should come in for Shadab and I know the batting is already weak but drop Babar (not for good, just for now) and pick any of the remaining bowlers. If 6 batsmen can't get the job done, neither can 7.

Plus, I think Dominica may spin ,from what I'm hearing, so 3 pacers and 2 spinners would be better.

Ultimately, Misbah has to be mroe active and put his foot on the gas when captaining at times. His last test, he should use all his years of experience to work through it because Pakistan have the baility to beat WI easily, they just need the intellect.

Good 2nd inn batting by WI and dead slow batting by Pakistan in 2nd inn. Pakistan didn't look any where any time that they had the will to win this match.

Hope's innings was the turning point imo. One would have expected the Windies to fold in the face of a moderate lead and a turning pitch (perhaps what Pakistan expected) but Hope's resilience turned it around. And given Pakistan's mental weakness, anything above 100 on the 5th day becomes a dodgy proposition.

Playing Shadab was a huge error. When has two leg spinners ever worked? Our 5th choice bowler Azhar is also a leg spinner. We basically played the whole test with 3 front line bowlers.

Yasir shahs negative line was the biggest blunder of the match , 25 plus over from round the wicket. Just atrocious to say the least.

Exactly. Probably the most useless and pointless 7 wicket haul ever.

Shafiq coming in at 316-4 to score 15 runs of 66 balls.
That was the time to press home the advantage.

sometimes bowlers need support from one end. Had a pacer or Shadab picked up hope before the scored raced to 150 yasir would have shot them out under 200 the other bowlers I am looking at you Amir did not raise their hand at the crunch.

Exactly and teh worst part is, Shah has done this previously. Now, I have no idea if it's his own doing or if it's something Misbah told him to do but to repeat the same mistake, on the world stage, is very, very bad cricket. On top of that, why was no one else coming over and giving him some advice?

They lost it in their 1st innings, when they weren't able to take a comprehensive lead from a strong position.

Too many runs in the first innings - we always put too much pressure on ourselves for later. Problem is that we need to wait for Yasir Shah to do something in the 2nd innings until then our Fast-bowlers are non productive

Playing Shadab in a 4-man attack.

Not capitalizing in the 1st innings after Misbah and Azhar set it up nicely.

Then failed to make an impact with the new ball in the 2nd innings, as mentioned above.

Anything over 150 was always going to be tough on day 5.

It was Edgbaston all over again. We failed to press home the advantage in the 1st inns - you can't bat 140 overs and only make 393.

We were well set on 316-4 but collapsed in a heap when we should scored 430-440. Shehzad batted far too slowly for his 70, the only batsman who arguably looked worse was Shafiq.

Shai Hope batted wonderfully to give WI something to defend so take no credit away from him. We looked tired and short of ideas at times during that 2nd inns with our 4 man attack. What made it worse was Shadab Khan just couldn't find a consistent length, looking every bit the boy who's only played 4 FC matches.

The pitch was tough to get settled as a batsman with uneven bounce - but its hardly a shocker that WI pitches behave like that in the 4th innings. I remember that 1994 Trinidad Test where England were bowled out for 46. That's why you need to get a move on in the 1st innings !

Pakistan batting slow was the reason of defeat.

Batting slow took the game into fifth day , otherwise pakistan could have batted on fourth day. Negative batting .
Azhar and Misbah added only 13 runs on day two , early 2 hrs , its pathetic by all means.

Batting slow did not affect the outcome in and of itself but it may have been on e of the issues but the negative bolwing by Shah and impotent captaincy were bigger factors, much bigger in fact.
