how do we do this? are belters the ideal solution in test cricket? is home advantage more of an advantage than toss these days?
in odi's too toss seems to matter alot barring the semi final clash between England and australia.

Test matches have to be fair. In Australia the team that bats first has such a massive advantage. Its totally unfair as the team batting second will be lagging behind unless they can bowl the opposition out quickly on the very first day of the test match. The team batting second won't get a fresh surface to bat on as the pitch wears out. So how exactly is this fair ? You can't really tell who the better team is if both teams don't get to play on a similar surface. Same applies to odis.
Wickets slowing down in the second innings forces teams to bat at a below par run rate which ultimately puts them under pressure in the latter stages of the game.

Well I've said before that an option is to give the away team a chance to decide whether to bat first or not.

The team that loses the toss should be allowed to make amendments to their team

Toss is basically there for commercial purposes. Broadcasters generate a lot of money and extra viewership time with toss. I don't think that various boards and ICC would be willing to negate it.

The issue is, toss doesn't play much role in sub continent where as in England it seems to be the case.

I think in ODIs split inns is the solution.

first team20 inns -second team 20 inns-second team 20 inns-first team 20 inns-first team 10 inns-second team 10 inns - in that order , with the team winning toss having the option of batting first or not .

In tests , , if two teams are playing , team A should be allowed to take a decision, then team B, then team A , then team B in that order for each passing match. Then it should go on for ever between these 2 teams

Sigh. Here we go again. Countless threads must exist already. The toss is here to stay. It's the only logical way. The better team will win the match. Yes, the toss is important but to win games you can't have everything going your way.

I would suggest scrap the toss and the lower ranked team should decide whether to bat or bowl. This would make the game more competitive

For odis and t20s, you have a toss, but that toss is only for a pre super over!
Whoever wins that pre super over decides whether they want to bat or bowl first and the game starts properly from there!
Also team sheets should be handed in after the toss! So you can have a team sheet for batting first and one for bowling first and submit it after the pre super over!

Ultimately, odis should be reduced to 40 overs and icc should look into split innings as per my thread!

In tests, the away team should choose whether to bat or bowl!!
Home team will have the advantage of tailoring the wickets to their preference!!

problem is, in England winning the toss is a massive advantage. Australia too. particularly for a strong touring team like india, south africa etc. in tests I mean.

Home team can obviously doctor the pitch and rightully so. I think they should award the home team the option to make their decision regarding batting and bowling for the first test. A toss winner rotation policy must be introduced. The away team should be deemed as toss winners for the next test and they can interchange post each test.

Good teams find a way to win irrespective of the outcome of the toss.

Playing conditions do not change significantly in ODIs, so I don't see how the toss could be making a significant impact on the game. If a team sucks at chasing and absorbing pressure, then that's on them.
