All wickets in England will have a bit of grass due to the damp climate.
They looked like standard English wickets to me. They don’t change much over time. Lords is usually low and slow (though the new groundsman left some grass on against Ireland), OT takes a bit of spin later on, Headingley used to be a minefield but is now a shirtfront in comparison, Oval is a bit bouncier and takes spin later, OT is a green seamer.
Wherever you go in England you will get variations on ‘slow seamer’. Usually the new ball swings a bit depending on the atmosphere.

No, they need the sun to shine so they can play and equalise the score.
I guess comparatively to India, they look like raging greentops. Same as happens in reverse when others tour India- they look completely barren & alien.
England is a good tour, some variety of wickets. Chance for all bowlers usually- Murali & Warne both have excellent records there I think so good spin can thrive alongside seamers. Runs can be had but you'll need a solid technique vs most bowling & especially the swinging or nibbling ball.
There is a bit of "home conditions" going on, I remember '05 had some very dry squares in comparison, when the plan was for reverse & that great seam bowling quartet.
Problem this time is I'm not sure which type of pitch will suit England. Oz have them covered in spin & dry wickets (reverse) without Anderson. They tried a "typical" England seamer first test & were trounced. True greentops are lottery.
England will be looking for someone to stand up & boss them back into this series here, or it could all go very pear shaped very quick. Historically, Broad will have to be the man. Root hasn't ever taken a series or barely a match away from Australia on his own. Stokes either. Broad has. YJB & Woakes look decent against some sides but falter vs Oz. I don't think they have it in them to be more than a support act if someone else leads.

“England” has no say in the matter.
The Headingley groundsman will do the best he can to provide a surface that will last five days and make for a good contest between bat and ball, given the weather.
I understand that Leeds is the fastest test track in England these days. Should be true bounce and good carry.

I always say bat first because that is what Bradman said. Though he was an Aussie and the weather doesn't affect matches as much as in UK.
England won't want to face Lyon in the fourth innings.
If you put someone in you have to shoot them out for < 200 or you lose the initiative. It might be heavy overcast on the first day with blue skies forecast therefter but you still have to take wickets. I remember the Lord's test against India where there was thick grass on. England bowled too short and hashed it up. Then strong Sun burned the grass dry, and the wicket went lower and slower and England lost because they had a collective mare against Ishant on the last day.

Derby: Nathan Lyon has sent an injury scare through the Australian camp after hurting his ankle playing touch football at training on Wednesday.
The off-spinner limped off the track moments after with team doctor Richard Saw for further assessment.
A team spokesman said he had a slight twist of his right ankle and left as a precaution but would have continued playing had the incident occurred in a Test match. He was able to walk unaided after training.
It continues an eventful few days for Lyon, who missed a run out opportunity that would have won the game, and retained the urn, for Australia.
Lyon, third on Australia's Test wicket-takers' list, is close to irreplaceable with no other specialist spinner in the 17-man touring party.
If a replacement is required, Victoria's Jon Holland would be the frontrunner having been part of the Australia v Australia A game before the series which served as an Ashes selection trial.
The team was playing touch football as part of its warm up before training in the lead up to the three-day tour game against Derbyshire starting Thursday.

James Anderson has been ruled out of the remainder of the Ashes series.
The ECB have confirmed that England's leading wicket-taker, who missed the drawn second Test and the victory over Australia at Headingley, felt calf pain during an outing for the Lancashire second XI against Durham and will now miss the remaining two matches.
The 37-year-old was already struggling with the injury sustained earlier in the summer and exacerbated in the opening Test but this setback in his recovery will now end his participation in the series.
Somerset's Craig Overton comes in as an added option in Anderson's absence in the only change to the 13-man squad for the fourth Test at Old Trafford.
That means batsman Jason Roy, under pressure at the top of the order, will get another chance to impress.
All-rounder Sam Curran remains the favourite to come in with Chris Woakes a candidate to be rested after a hectic summer with both red ball and white.
The fourth Test begins in Manchester on September 4th.

England have a good pace/swing attack with Archer’s hostility, Broad the wise old head cutting in about and hitting the top of off, Stokes and Wilkes swinging it and hopefully Curran as a lefty option.

After missing out on the first Test at Edgbaston, spearhead Josh Hazlewood is confident he can play the final four Ashes Tests on the bounce.
Hazlewood was an 11th-hour omission from the series' opener in Birmingham but returned for the second Test at Lord's in what was his first Test match in eight months having been sidelined with a back injury.
He followed his impressive Test comeback with a career-best haul of 9-115 at Headingley which included 5-30 in England's first innings of 67.

Hazlewood said in April it would be "near impossible" for any of Australia's fast bowlers to play all five Ashes Tests, with only marathon man Pat Cummins with a chance to achieve the feat having not missed a match yet.
But Hazlewood says he is certain he can play the final four Tests unless his bowling workload spikes at Old Trafford, venue of the fourth Test, which starts on Wednesday.
"The body's really good," Hazlewood said. "I felt a lot better at Headingley than Lord's, just getting those miles into the legs in that first Test (back).
"I can't see why not unless we bowl a mountain of overs in the next game but body's feeling really good and happy to play both if possible.
In Hazlewood's favour of playing at Old Trafford and The Oval (from September 12-16) is his moderate workload in the Test matches he has played.
At Lord's he bowled 35 overs while in Leeds he got through 43.5, which is in the ballpark of what is budgeted for a fast bowler each Test.
The 28-year-old missed Australia's tour match in Derby to rest and given his brilliant form, it would be hard to see the right-hander miss out in Manchester.
Four years ago, Hazlewood – then a Test a rookie – got carried away trying to swing the Dukes ball on his maiden Ashes tour in the UK.
But in 2019, he has discovered less is more.
"It certainly feels like I'm bowling well," he said.
"Ever since I bowled at Worcester a few weeks back, I took it into Lord's and into Headingley.
"I think I'm not trying to do too much, trying to be pretty simple, not trying and swing the ball at all really, occasionally I do when it gets a bit older.
"But just hitting that right length with the new ball, making them play, not trying and do too much, keep it simple."
Hazlewood has been the pick of the bowlers for either side since the second Test and his performance in Leeds left former Australia captain Ricky Ponting mightily impressed.
"Hazlewood, with the exception of his spell with the second new ball in the second innings, I'm not sure I've seen him bowl better than that," Ponting said on the latest episode of The Unplayable Podcast.
"That was outstanding from him."

England have a lack of quality batsmen in their domestic circuit, they really are struggling to get good openers and middle order batsmen, they've gone through Vince, Stoneman, Malan, Roy, Hales, Haseeb Hameed, Jennings and all of them failed.
I wonder when they will give Ollie pope a go, he has outstanding first class stats. Instead of pushing Roy down to 4, why not place Pope at 4 and open with Denly.
Also Ben Foakes should replace Jos Buttler, and Foakes should keep. Buttlers Test and First class stats are below average, especially for a specialist batsman.

There's no mention of him retiring, were probably going off assumptions, every year jimmy brings a few of his former England team mates at Burnley cc in a presidents day x1 game, it attracts a full house and like usual jimmy is so down to earth and a fantastic bloke, my lad who plays at Burnley cc adores him

England batsman Joe Denly has confirmed he will open the batting in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, with Jason Roy to move down the order to No.4.
Roy has had a torrid time at the top of the order in the Ashes so far, averaging just 9.5 as part of England's opening stand that has averaged 12.5 for the series.
"I got a call from Joe Root and he said he'd like for me to go at the top of the order and try and get us off to a good start," Denly, who has batted at No.4 in the first three Tests, told BBC Radio.
"With Jason at four it enables him to come in and play his way.
"He’s a dangerous player so he's great to have there."
Denly has fared slightly better than Roy in this series, averaging 24.5 in six innings at second drop.
The right-hander is coming off a patient, resilient 50 in England's second innings at Headingley, before Ben Stokes capped off an incredible run chase with a thrilling unbeaten century.

Steve Waugh has rejoined Australia as a mentor ahead of the crunch fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford.
The 168-Test veteran spent the first month of the Ashes tour with the Australia side but travelled home to fulfil prior commitments after the Lord's Test.
It was Waugh's first stint with the visitors since retiring in 2004, and team coach Justin Langer affirmed how keen 'Iceman' was to return after arriving in Manchester on Sunday night to resume his role.
He said: "Steve was actually going to fly home, do the function and fly back the next day. That's how much he's enjoying it. He's been like a kid at Christmas.
"To come back after such a long time away from the game, his passion and enthusiasm has been brilliant and it's going to be great."
Waugh also held mentoring positions with the Australian team at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games.
Waugh has been officially employed by Cricket Australia to pass on his knowledge, following on from fellow former greats Darren Lehmann, Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting and Mitchell Johnson.
Langer added: "They have they got a great presence within the group but they're great psychologists as well. They've been in the cauldron, they've seen it before.
"To have your guys learning from people of that calibre is very important short-term, but longer term there's huge value in that."
It was at Old Trafford 30 years ago where Australia won the Ashes on English soil for the first time since 1975, with Waugh making 92, and he memorably recorded twin hundreds to level the series 1-1 in 1997.
Langer hinted not having Waugh during the Third Test at Headingley could have affected the result.
He said: "Would he have made a difference in those last 60-70 runs? Who knows?"

Matthew Wade has kept his position in the top six despite Trevor Hohns saying the incumbent No.6's place in the side was being considered.
The Australian brains trust were concerned with the form of the top order and have acted accordingly, dumping one of the mainstays of their side.
Khawaja and opener Marcus Harris had been in a battle to stay in the XI after superstar batsman Steve Smith was passed fit to play after missing the third Test with concussion.
Both players made half-centuries though Harris appeared the more composed of the pair before being run out in a mix-up with Khawaja in the tour game against Derbyshire last week.
Though one of the more experienced players in the touring party, Khawaja, who has played 44 Tests, ran out of chances after a lean run stretching back to late last year.
The 32-year-old is averaging 27 in his past 10 Tests since saving Australia with an epic ton in Dubai against Pakistan. He has since made one century and passed 50 on one other occasion.
Khawaja has had a lean Ashes series, continuing his poor record in England where he averages 19.66 in six Tests.
Not even Khawaja's excellent record as an opener, where he averages 96 with two centuries from eight innings, was enough to keep him in the side.
Marnus Labuschagne is set to take Khawaja's place at first drop with Smith to return at No.4 ahead of Travis Head and Wade.
Starc is as close as he has been all series to playing but he and Siddle's fates will be sealed by another inspection of the pitch on Tuesday.
The Old Trafford wicket is dry and similar to that unveiled at Edgbaston, which favoured the spinners on days four and five.
Selectors remain committed to restricting England's scoring in a pointer to Siddle's chances.

Australia should rest Pat Cummins now, they don't want him breaking down. Also rest Hazlewood.
They should also give Carey a go in place of Head or Wade.

At least one of Cummins or Hazlewood should play if Australia want to ensure a win at the Oval. Every test matters now and resting both of them wouldn't be worth risking throwing away 16/24 points and an Away ashes series win.

A tremendous, tremendous amount of respect and admiration for what Australia have achieved in this series so far with the help of only a few batsmen, and a salute to these few batsmen who´ve put up their hands and made themselves counted, especially Steve Smith. To get such a huge, huge aggregate of runs in just the three Test matches that he has played out of four, is simply amazing, amazing! What an awesome batsman!
I still think though that England will win the last Test match to draw the series - unless rains has a role to play. In this age and era where the ongoing trend is of teams making full use of the home conditions, and teams away from home collapsing like a house of cards, I cannot see this Australian team not having a single bad match out of five. I just cannot. I know that they´ve lost a match already this series, but that was purely down to one man brilliance and a bit of harshness from the umpire in the most crucial stage of the game.
