India's men's boxing coach denied any doping had taken place on Monday after syringes were found in the Commonwealth Games athletes' village, saying one of his fighters was given a vitamin injection because he was unwell.

Santiago Nieva was speaking to Australia's 7 News after Games bosses said officials from an unnamed team had been summoned over a breach of the event's “no-needle” policy.

“I'm confident that our boxers haven't taken anything,” Nieva said, two days ahead of the opening ceremony. “We had one boxer that wasn't very feeling well and the doctor has given him an injection.”

Asked if it had been a performance-enhancing drug, Nieva replied: “No, that was a vitamin substance.”

A cleaner at the athletes' village initially tipped off organisers about the syringes, officials said.

However, Nieva's explanation contradicts India team manager Ajay Narang, who on Saturday told AFP that the needles were nothing to do with them. They were found inside a water bottle on a path outside their accommodation, Narang said.

Games chiefs, who are still analysing the syringes, have repeatedly warned against teams or athletes breaking the “no-needle” edict.

Any penalties would be at the discretion of the Commonwealth Games Federation court.

David Grevemberg, the federation's chief executive, declined earlier Monday to identify which country was under suspicion, but said officials had been summoned to a meeting with the organisation's medical commission.

Commonwealth games discussion

India bagged their first medal in silver.
SL won bronze in same event

In badminton, Ind beat SL 5-0 in team event.
Scotland vs Pakistan to follow in same group.

Mirabai Chanu gets India the first GOLD. Pretty much stomped over all her rivals, her every lift a world record.

Top 3 finish looks difficult for India but should look to finish 4th. Behind the hosts, England and Canada.

how often is this held?

i remember one in delhi in 2012 or so. was that the last one?

Every 4 years. DELHI hosted it in 2010.
2014 was in Glasgow.

do people in india follow this generally?

pretty much no one in Pakistan does. though olympics does have a bigger audience eventhough we do poorly there as well

The one in Delhi was massive since it was held in India so it brought these games in focus of public eye.. People do watch it obviously not as much as cricket or olympics but it’s got a decent following..

Good stuff from Chanu she was getting good support from crowd and was just too good for this competition..

actually more than a decent following. The problem is most people don't do it for longer than 30 minutes or so.. many are just interested in one or two events... usually boxing, weight lifting, shooting kind of stuff..

Pakistani weightlifter Talha Talib won the first bronze medal for Pakistan in 62-kilogram category at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Lifting a total of 283kg, he also established a new record at the Commonwealth Games by lifting 132kg in the snatch.

The Gujranwala-based athlete lost the chance to lift gold after he lifted 151kg in the second clean and jerk attempt and failed to lift more in the third which cost him the gold.

Malaysian Muhamad Aznil BIDIN won the gold as he lifted a total of 288kg while Morea BARU of Papua New Guinea secured silver for lifting 286kg weight in the same category.

Pakistan has fielded weightlifters in five categories and the squad has two reserved players as well.

Earlier today, Pakistani squash players and boxers won their opening matches as well.

Fifty-six Pakistani athletes will be in action at the Commonwealth Games while more than 4,000 athletes from 71 nations and territories are participating in the game.

Eleven-year-old table tennis prodigy Anna Hursey made her mark at the Commonwealth Games as she helped pull off a hard-fought doubles win for Wales on Thursday.

The schoolgirl, the youngest athlete at these Games and thought to be the youngest in the competition's history, partnered with Charlotte Carey in the women's team event.

Carey and Hursey were 2-0 up against India's Madhurika Patkar and Mouma Das before being pegged back to 2-2, but they grittily won the last game 13-11 to seal the match.

Although it was Wales's lone success, as India won the three singles matches to take the tie 3-1, it was an important step forward for Hursey.

Standing just 1.60 metres (5ft 3in) tall, the Cardiff schoolgirl is known as a tenacious competitor, having already broken records by appearing at last year's European championships.

“She's taking it in her stride really,” Welsh coach Stephen Jenkins told AFP earlier. “She is actually really mature for her age. It's just inside her — she's mentally strong. “

Mirabai Chanu was glorious. Every attempt of hers was a Games Record. It was evident from the very 1st attempt that she was winning the gold. The competition was only for the 2nd & 3rd position. The girl is a sureshot medal hopeful in Tokyo’ 2020

These people across the Himalayan belt are some of the strongest Desis pound for pound. We should expect some world class athletes emerging from these states once they start getting proper training and facilities.

India wins it's 3rd gold, moves to no.3 position in the table behind AUS, ENG.

Will be a herculean task to end up in top 3 above CAN, NZ, SCO with lots of medals to be won in swimming, gymnastics, cycling and diving!

Shooting, wrestling, Boxing, TT, athletics and badminton are our main categories to win GOLD this time around. Need to win ~ 30 GOLD to be in top 3.

We will settle at 5 and if lucky 4. Too many cycling and swimming medals where we are zilch.

Will be happy with 5 or so medals in athletics. Overall count of 65 medals with 20 golds would be a good show for India.

Hard chance!! We will stay 4th... Just counted that there are 76 gold medals in swimming and cycling. We have zero chances in that big lot.

They dropped lawn tennis n archery. So many cycling and lawn bowl events !! I am still hopeful of a better show from our athletes this time around compared to Glasgow games where we won only 15 gold.

Pakistan and India played to a draw 2-2 in men's field hockey what a game it was with Pakistan to level the score on the last play of the game

Mary Kom has entered Semis of 48 kg boxing.

This girl Manu Bhaker appears to be exceptionally talented. Hope she pushes for gold in Olympics.

That's true. In swimming, they should add a few more, like 25m, 50m, 75m, 90m, etc. Just to make it easier for US and Australia to get more golds.

Saniya has entered skeet finals after finishing 3rd in qualification. Can expect a Silver if she maintain her consistency.

India bt Singapore in semis of badminton team event, another SILVER confirmed

India, Canada tied with 6 GOLD, vying for 3rd spot.

@Pakposters, apart from wrestling which events have better medal prospects for PAK?

Congratulations to supporters of Pakistani hockey!

2 excellent comeback draws against #6 India and #7 England. Oltmans is an excellent coach who will make Pakistani hockey competitive again, at the least.

Indian supporters should be more cognizant of the quality of the fields here; only the performances of Mirabai and Manu Bhaker were Olympic medal level.

India eek out a narrow win in hockey against Wales, 4-3.

Meanwhile Indian eves are up against hot favs Singapore in TT gold medal match.

She should win the gold here and is training for the Olympics in 2020 as well, routing for her to get the gold in 2020 if she was in her prime it would be no problem

If there really was doping, it will be revealed by the tests the athletes are subjected to, rather than syringes found "inside a water bottle on a path outside their accommodation".

PAK should invest more in sports, even B'desh has 1 silver compared to 1 bronze of Pak so far!

True. It was quite shocking when not a single Pakistani athlete qualified for Rio Olympics and going by the Commonwealth performance so far, I doubt things have improved.

Silver for Pradeep in weightlifting 🏋

Indian men TT team beat high ranked Singapore to enter finals , so at least a silver is confirmed!

Shooting events are in progress with 4 Indians in frey...

Swimming and cycling will take a long time to improve in our country, have more hopes from cycling in next 100 years than swimming.

Smit Singh qualifies for skeet finals, had a great qualification comeback today. Women weightlifting is in progress, we have 2 contenders in here... fingers crossed!

TT men team finals India vs Nigeria/ England scheduled for 6 PM today

We should also remember there was a lot of controversy in 2014 Boxing where we were robbed of 3 GOLD medals as the referees chose the Scots (host nation) and Welsh men in finals, there were also reports of judges being bribed. It won't happen this time, so we can expect at least 2 GOLD in boxing.

We won 4, 9, 4 in 2014 games.

So far in here it's 2, 2, 3 which is good; if we grab 8+ GOLD in shooting we are good for a 3rd place finish.

8 Golds in shooting events alone? Not happening. Would be very pleased with 4-5 gold with a total haul of 14-15 medals in shooting.

Man, never knew sports like TT and badminton can be sooo exciting. Wow
Badminton > Cricket (in terms of excitement)
