Pakistan consumer inflation slows to weakest in nearly a decade​

Pakistan's annual inflation rate slowed to 1.5% in February, the lowest in nearly a decade and below the finance ministry's estimates, data from the statistics bureau showed on Monday.

Inflation has cooled significantly, easing from 23.1% in February 2024.

Consumer prices in February fell 0.8% from the month before, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

The South Asian country, currently bolstered by a $7 billion facility from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) granted in September, is navigating an economic recovery.

Authorities have credited inflation's downward trend to economic stabilization under a the IMF programme.

Pakistan's finance ministry, in its monthly economic outlook report released last week, predicted inflation would stabilize in February between 2.0-3.0%, continuing its downward trend from the previous year. The ministry also forecast a slight increase to 3.0-4.0% by March 2025.

"A favorable base effect from last year's high inflation contributed to this result. We anticipate an uptick in food inflation during Ramzan," said Waqas Ghani, head of research at JS Global, adding that the data was primarily driven by a decline in food inflation, with significant price drops in staples.

The rupee under IK was around 180 per USD, now its nearly around 280, this is a huge increase in a relatively short time frame. These crooks are bringing their country to the knees. I don't know why you keep name-checking me, I have very little interest in Pak politics so don't usually read these threads. I only saw this because you replied in the cricket forum by dropping Imran Khan's name (again) in a thread about Shaheen Afridi so I realised why this thread keeps refreshing.

In contrast in 2013 flour price was 640 per 20 kg and by 2018 it went up by only 200 rupees

In 2018 flour price was 864 by 2022 it went up by 250

In 2013 petrol price was 102 per litre and in 2018 88 went down by 14 rupees

In 2018 the petrol price was 88 April 2022 it was 150 rupees that's an increase of 62 rupees

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to take strict action against sugar hoarders and those responsible for artificially inflating prices, according to Associated Press of Pakistan

Speaking at a review meeting on Friday, the prime minister expressed concern over the rising sugar prices and emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring fair pricing.

PM Shehbaz stated that the government would not tolerate speculation or hoarding that artificially drives up the cost of sugar. He ordered a comprehensive crackdown on profiteers and hoarders, with a report on the action to be presented after the operation.

The prime minister also instructed officials to closely monitor the supply and demand of sugar, highlighting that there is an adequate quantity of the commodity available in the country. He further directed authorities to strengthen their communication with sugar mills to ensure proper oversight.

Addressing the issue during the holy month of Ramadan, PM Shehbaz said that the government would not allow any exploitation of the public. He urged chief secretaries from all four provinces to ensure that sugar is provided to the people at fixed, government-approved prices.

Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain has denied reports claiming that sugar is being sold at Rs180 per kilogram, calling them “baseless” and “propaganda meant to create panic among the public.”

Speaking to the media, the minister said no significant increase in sugar prices has occurred, and in fact, government action has led to a Rs5 per kg reduction.

“Media rumours are designed to spread uncertainty. The current market price is Rs164 per kg, not Rs180,” said Hussain. “These statements are part of a disinformation campaign.”

He added that the federal government is working closely with provincial authorities to monitor the situation and ensure price stability. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also formed a committee, headed by Ishaq Dar, to determine fair sugar pricing.

According to the minister, hoarders and profiteers are responsible for the recent disruptions and will face strict action. “There is no shortage of sugar in the country. We will not allow anyone to manipulate prices,” he stated.

Rana Tanveer rejected claims of a sugar crisis, saying last year’s sugar stock stood at 7.6 million tonnes, while national consumption was only 6.3 million tonnes. “The surplus stock was about 1.5 million tonnes, and more than half has already been exported,” he explained.

He acknowledged that while sugarcane cultivation increased by 2% this year, adverse weather slightly affected yield. Still, a national buffer stock ensures a stable supply.

“There is no truth in media reports about sugar shortages or exports,” he said. “Some vested interests are spreading misinformation to disturb market conditions, but the government is fully implementing the Prime Minister’s instructions to maintain supply and prevent shortages.”

Inflation hits three-decade-low of 0.7pc in March

Pakistan’s consumer price index (CPI) inflation rate maintained a sharp deceleration trend on Thursday, hitting a three-decade low of 0.7 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in March.

The current situation in Pakistan reflects disinflation, which signifies a slowdown in inflation. In contrast, deflation occurs when the general price levels decline.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, CPI inflation decreased to 0.7pc on a year-on-year basis in March 2025 as compared to 1.5pc in Feb and 20.7pc in March 2024.

“On a month-on-month basis, it increased by 0.9pc in March 2025 as compared to a decrease of 0.8pc in the previous month,” it said.

Topline Securities, a brokerage firm in Karachi, said, “Pakistan’s CPI for March 2025 has clocked in at 0.7pc, the lowest monthly YoY reading in over three decades.

“Inflation in February 2025 was 1.5pc,” it stated. “Inflation during 9MFY25 has averaged at 5.25pc compared to 27.06pc in 9MFY24.”
