The curious case of Australian cricket!

There was a time when they were unbeatable. They have the most World Cups (5) in cricket and have produced many cricketing legends.

But, this current era (Past 5-8 years) of Australian cricket they have just produced 1 class batsman and that is Steve Smith while Warner is fine but not upto that level. Now without both of them I only see struggle. There was a time when there were number of Australian batsmen averaging in 50s in first class and most of them never got many chances at international level as the team was already too strong e.g Brad Hodge just to name someone although there were many others.

While they do have some pretty good bowlers but they are all injury prone. I dont remember the last time when a cricketing nation have 5 of their front line bowlers injured (Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins, Pattinson, Coulternile).

So what has gone wrong with Australian cricket, though they still might fare well in World Cup considering the confidence they will bring in but actually there team has declined big time.

I dare say but I think it might be the effect of T20s which has spoiled the culture of Australian cricket as I cant think of any other reasoning.

So what do you guys think is the reason of this decline with no upcoming or present class batsmen other than the one I have mentioned and whats the reason of their bowlers being so fragile?

I agree I think many kids watching batsmen like Chris Lynn and Chris Gayle bat and whack the ball out of the park try to slog as well which ruins their technique and has caused a lack of class batsman for Australia.

He is really good and definitely one of the top batsman around but do you really believe he is in the same league as smith, ponting. I really like watching him bat but class is a big word.

Why are Australian bowlers bar Hazlewood so injury prone?

Even SA have produced fast bowlers like Steyn and Rabada, but they are/were not injury prone.

Steyn has been injury prone in last 5 years but he did played 10 years of consistent cricket without being injury prone.

Agreed he is one of the best openers around (Cant edit the original post now), would like him to score bit more runs in India and England as he is yet to score a century there.

If Australia get the players missing back they are still a top team. You guys are overreacting. If you take 5/6 world class players out of your team, you will struggle.

He is an FTB like Sharma.Was struggling against movement from Bhuvi in last ODI series even in India.

Given you mentioned "5-8 years" and that I've been following cricket since 2011, then this is the perfect thread for me to answer. Smith is obviously world class but Warner himself is also world class but not in the "legendary" bracket. He's already proven himself to be one of the best openers in the world, he's a lot better than Dhawan, Fakhar, Tamim, Perera, Roy, Guptill, Gayle etc. Apart from these two, they produced Glenn Maxwell who has always wrecked Pakistan since his debut in the UAE, he literally tears our bowlers apart; a pretty good player who is unique in his own way but has fallen away a bit. Mitchell starc is another world class bowler alongside Hazelwood, they've also had other good fast bowlers in the past like Hilfenhaus, Pattinson, Ryan Harris. As of now I'd say Nathan Lyon is a pretty good off spinner of which Aus can be proud of. Their wicketkeepers apart from Haddin have been really poor though. Forgot to mention Michael Clarke who was brilliant as well, lead his team to win the 2015 WC with ease. I would say that this Aus team isn't as strong as it was before 2011 but it's done enough to be that elite team which has beaten lots of other teams.
