The Embarrassment of World Cup qualifiers awaits Pakistan's ODI team

Qualification for world cup in 2023 in India is currently going to be done via the ICC ODI super league which contains 13 teams. (if someone can add the current table to this post). I think pakistan currently stand 11th out of 13 teams. The Top 7 teams along with India automatically qualify. The bottom 5 teams then have to play in a tournament before the world cup to seal the last 2 places. The fact pakistan are getting turned over by England "Z" team, Aussie "D" team. We struggled against a SA "reserve team as well. I can see Pakistan missing out on Automatic qualification with current team set up. Under 2 years away from world cup now and i can already seeing trying to qualify is going to be an embarrassment.

Apart from WI and Afghanistan i cant see current team beating most other sides in remaining ODI series they have left which contribute points towards the world cup.

But i want this embarressment! I want to see the trio of Babar/Rizwan/ Shaheen fail so hard so that there fans can realise how useless our team has become by putting our eggs in one basket banking on these three players for everything!
 
If Babar had played on a bit more, we would have got extremely close to the target.

The revisionism looks awful now, because him getting out at the worst possible time exposed our fragile and naive middle order and their ability to play at 7 runs an over was always doubtful.

I am sure if Pakistan have targets of 250 to 300 in next 2 matches, they will win both.

The problem is, wickets just fell wrong time in the match for Pakistan.

Its a game.

The strategy and timing and luck went wrong.

Thats all there is to it.

Most teams have only 4-5 players to bank on..Never understand the Pakistani poster logic of seeing your own team fail to prove yourself right.

Where are you when certain fans are destroying/character assassinating guys like Sharjeel, Rauf, Shadab, Umar Akmal and even Fakhar Zaman by calling him Hacker Zaman?!??

The trio were the reason PCT won against India in the T20 wc... not sure what you want me to say?

Fakhar is good for Pak if he scores runs and Shadab is good too.

With Sharjeel and Rauf not sure what is the goal? And UA lol cmon bro!

Fakhar Zaman, Shadab and Rauf are the only 3 proper ODI/T20 players pakistan has! How is that too difficult to understand??

You’re talking about the middle orders inability to play 7 an over but can you remind me at what RR Babar and Imam were going at? I’m sure it wasn’t 7, and yet you expect the incoming batsmen to go at 7+ an over.🤦🏻*♂️

Babar can bat at a higher rate but he gambles on batting longer so he plays safe.

They were batting at 4 to 5 runs per over simply to attack in last 10 to 15 overs.

With Imam, he is limited.

If you ask him to play at a SR above 80 to 90 early on, he probably will succumb.

You have to assume Imam bats through most of his innings with a SR close to 100 as he reaches his century.

Babar has gears.

The fact he didnt use them today, doesnt mean he doesnt have them.

Which is why I stick to my statement.

Pakistan would have got extremely close today had Babar batted for 10 more overs or so.

Babar has gears? Remind of at least 5 games where we’ve seen Babar start with a strike rate of around 70 and finishing at 100+.

The only thing missing in Babar’s game is that he hasn’t got gears and if he does it’s very limited. That’s why we often see him throwing his wicket away after he reaches his 50.

I said it before the England series were about to go on a losing run in ODIS and I was right with this team winning one high scoring match out of ten would be an achievement.

You’re really telling me Saud Rizwan Khushdil Iftikhar are the best batsmen we have in Pakistan not even mentioning Imam here or anyone else the whole balance is wrong which leads to results like we’ve seen recently.
 
Anyone who remembers the thrashing these guys got by England Z will know this team is in deep trouble.

They are definitely playing the qualifiers.

Just imagine if Pakistan do play the qualifiers and even bottle it there. We might not even see our team play in the World Cup. What an embarrassment that would be.
 
T2o is a fluke format never gauge the calibre of any player based on pajama cricket, cant see Pakistan winning any game with these performance
 
Pakistan should make it.

They have a home series against West Indies, an away series against Afghanistan, a home series against New Zealand, and an away series against Netherlands. Pakistan should win all of these.

South Africa and Sri Lanka may have to play qualifiers.

Bit of an over reaction, still a lot of cricket left to play.

However, I do agree drastic changes need to be made. And they need to be made right away.
 
From traditional top 8 teams, only 1 team may miss direct qualification.

Bangladesh have probably done enough (wins against South Africa, Sri Lanka, and West Indies) to secure direct qualification. That means, one team from traditional top 8 teams should miss it.

I think South Africa may end up playing qualifier because they have done poorly. Also, they have some tough assignments ahead.

Therefore, Pakistan should be safe.
 
Well that can be a blessing coz they'll get very good match experience before the actual tournament starts..
 
Overreaction.

Pakistan is ranked 11th because they have played fewer games. I expect them to end up at 6th position.

2 out of SL, WI and SA will play the qualifiers.

250-300 will chased down easily by these Aussies. Their bowling is toothless

Ever since Misbah took over and Haris was gone , that middle order they continue to play hackers like Asif and Ifthikar

Once they come out of it and play Shafique and Haider Ali in the top 5 this team is going nowhere

Rizwan has been playing poorly in the middle order for quite some time now

Babar should move down to no. 4 probably and play Shafique at 3 or open with Rizwan and play Fakhar or Imam at 3.

As of now tail starts at 4

SA quite unsettled, they beat India but lost to Ban , something not quite right for them.

By end of this year , Dussen or Maharaj might become captain. Temba is a joke.

South Africa's 3-0 win over India didn't count toward World Super League. It is because that series wasn't part of World Super League.

South Africa lost 1-2 against Pakistan, 1-2 against Sri Lanka, 1-2 against Bangladesh, and drew 1-1 against Ireland. These were big blows for them. Also, their upcoming assignments should be much tougher.

So, it is South Africa who may miss out and not Pakistan.
 
PCB, Rameez Raja and our players only care about T20s and making PSL better than IPL. They couldn’t care less about ODIs and test cricket. It might even be better for if we don’t qualify for the World Cup. Maybe then, they will actually implement some changes and stop obsessing over T20 cricket.

We are the only nation on earth set to host a 7 match bilateral T20 series later this year vs England.

That too a year before a 50 over World Cup. The mind boggles.

Pakistan has played only 10 matches so far out of 24 which is 4th lowest amongst the 13 teams (There are still 14! matches to go). Just thought to shed some light on the table and current standings.

However, yes the way we are playing has been alarming and better, approach, game sense and tactics are needed. No two ways about it.

An absolute embarrassment to play a 7 match T20 series.
 
You all need to relax and do some research before going on...Pakistan should be safe and qualify as most of the teams above us have played way more and we still have a lot of relatively easy matches coming on. Yes the standard of cricket is bad but its not like we are losing to everyone. Its a bad time for ODI cricket right now and most of the teams are struggling due to less ODI's being played....South Africa and England have lost to Ireland in this cycle already....Bangladesh have won series against Srilanka, Westindies and S.A amongst other results.
 
Well as long as Babar gets to score 100s against Namibia, UAE and the likes, and be number one again, I don't have much to complain. We will win it comfortably. Just hope we are not placed with Afghanistan though as they are real threat these days

My understanding is we have 12 ODIs remaining in the current cycle; 3 each against WI, SL, NZ and Afghanistan. I think if we can win 7 or 8 of those 12 games, we will be fine with qualification. Even if we factor in an unlikely 3-0 defeat against NZ we can still lose 1 or 2 against WI, SL and Afghanistan.
 
Pakistan is taking this cup in India let alone qualification. Mark my words.

It all seems a bit random to me. To be honest I don't really understand how it works i.e. can Afghanistan just have series after series with Zimbabwe, Netherlands and qualify by beating them?

For us we have another 9 games (I think!): 3 against Netherlands, 3 against NZ and 3 against Afghanistan. The Sri Lanka ODI series was cancelled as it did not form part of the world cup league.
 
A huge moment for us fans, especially for those who have seen ajju bhai taking us to 8th and heck 9th on rankings table. Now the aim must be to be the top 3 in all formats consistently.

Pakistan, after whitewashing West Indies 3-0 on home soil, have managed to overtake India in the latest ICC ODI rankings.

The Men in Green sit fourth in the ODI rankings behind New Zealand, England, and Australia. Pakistan has a rating of 106 whereas India sits in the fifth position with a 107 rating.
 
The number 4 position will give Pakistani fans an illusion that our team is good & strong but in reality we're still a mediocre side in all formats. The only reason we are #4 in ODI's & #3 in T20I's is that all other countries tries young blood in these meaningless series. The only format where team plays their full strength team (Test) Pakistan is at #5 seventeen points behind #4 SA.

In T20I's we still have too many accumulators in our squad i.e Babar, Rizwan(Riz can be excused because he plays as a wk as well) etc. Our Bowling apart from Shaheen is useless in T20's, Haris & shahdab have quality but are too inconsistent with the ball.

In ODI's we have non existent middle & lower order. Our team is over reliant on Imam & Babar. Rizwan's performances are abysmal in ODI's & in bowling again apart from Shaheen we have no one.

The whole "fUlL sTrEnGtH" argument is flawed on so many levels. Then let's also admit that past Park rankings shouldn't be taken into account as we were playing so many ttfs.

In the end, it is XI vs XI on the day.

Btw, these so called full strength XIs choke big time. Has seen it happened so many times.

Pakistan have been playing consistently good cricket and it shows in rankings.

So evaluation of Pakistan cricket is based upon how it does in a random shortened format where almost literally anyone can win?

Pakistan are not a Tier 1 team like England/Australia/India/NZ but they're definitely in Tier 2 with SA (and remaining teams are Tier 3 & below). There's definitely still work to be done to continue climbing higher but it's important we keep in mind a lot of the core guys are in their prime/entering their prime now with plenty of exciting talent that is upcoming.

The stability of playing in Pakistan is starting to help and we are starting to see our batsmen do our better by not playing in UAE anymore. The team is still pretty young and inexperienced and I think they will continue to get better as the players refine their game a bit more and mature.
