Other than Yasir , teams seem to be picking off spinners in tests and are having success. LO cricket seems to be the place for leggies whilst this era of test cricket seems to have turned towards having an offie who can keep it tight.

Pace of the match these days are relatively hectic. Finger spinners provide more control i guess.

Our Spin attack with Shakib, Miraz & Taijul is quite good actually.

I think more than the spinners quality these generation (batting) is dominated by spinners because of the spin playing quality. Haven't seen any or very few footage from pre 1950s era, but based on last 50 years, I can safely say that after YK's retirement, this is by far the worst spin playing era by some margin.

Unless it's a green top (like the 2 Tests of PAK in NZ) or condition like May-June UK (next 2/3 Tests of PAK), on a standard Test wicket I'll always pick 1.2 spinners at least.

1.2???

Then take 1.5 :(. 0.2 is say someone like Haris or Sanath or Sehwag or Border/Bevan..... players who makes the XI simply on batting merit but can bowl 25-35 overs when condition is helpful (10-12 when not, just to change ends or give some rest to main bowlers) - that's 0.2 bowler for you :)

Sanath is more than 0.2.

Sanath is more than 0.2.

Not in Test - he didn't get his Test doubles from 100+ Tests, majority playing in spin friendly condition. In that regard, both Border & Bevan has 10 for in Test ....

The simple equation is, think if any of those can make a Test XI for their bowling only or combined batting-bowling and their batting skills matching their bowling skills ......

Nothing new. It used to be Murali/Bhaji/Ajmal/Swann/Vettori/ Harris (SA) half a decade ago. What's different?

It's the fact that good legspinners always have been rare. Still the case. Yasir is one of the few who has proven to be good after Warne/Kumble.

Even half decent Leggies do better in limited overs because of their variations and the fact that the batsmen has to score. Exactly the reason Shadab struggled in the longer version after a superb OD debut. It's a tough ask when the bats can block your best deliveries all day.

Great observation.

It is exactly oposite in shorter formats - almost every team prefers a wrist spinner as a more attacking option.

Yup this is definitely true. Problem is that they've become almost irrelevant in ODI's because the pitches give them absolutely nothing. You're going to start seeing less and less all-format bowlers from this point on is my gut feel.

This generation of batsman are poor in playing spin. Common sense might say it is easier for wrist spinners to dominate poor players of spin. But the reality is quite different. Although the batsman ability to play spin has deteriorated, overall run scoring rate has increased along with batsman intent to be positive. This allows them to negotiate wrist spinners somewhat easily when compared to wrist spinners who tend to be more accurate.. Even the best wrist spinner of current era offers lots of hit me balls and tend to go for runs.. That eases pressures and make it easier for batsman to survive as there is not much pressure to score runs. It is not same with finger spinners like Herath, Jadeja, etc who tend to be pretty accurate and difficult to get away with. That allows them to work on the batsman poor skillset and get them out

It is the other way in the LOIs where batsman are always trying to score runs.. Here the variety that wrist spinner brings to the table allows them to dominate even if they go for some runs, which even the finger spinners will concede anyway

Well summed up.
