This is what Morne Morkel said in his presser recently:

"Luckily we've got a fantastic medical team and myself who monitor the bowling loads and we're daily checking in with the guys on mental well-being as I don't think it's always just the physical stuff"

Looking at how we handled Shaheen Shah Afridi's injury in the recent past and how Naseem Shah has been allowed to be run into the ground. can we put any faith in PCB's work load management?

How can Naseem's serious issue not been spotted before? Even when he was in LPL his captain was talking about shoulder issues but NO one from PCB, including coaches took note of this.

PCB is a complete joke. Just like the rest of the government in the country. Apparently they haven't even come to a conclusion on the new central contract and players haven't been paid for 4 months now.

Why does Pakistani fast bowlers play every international match, there are so many bowling options for Pakistan but still they make their primary bowlers to play all matches.

This is a failure to develop your bench strength and the faith you have in them along with worrying about wins, losses

Who's next Shaheen? Because the amount of leagues and international matches he's playing without a rest it's coming isn't?

Let's not excuse the players in this because they should be on the hook too. There's no long-term thinking and just looking for a quick buck whenever they can with these T20 leagues.

From Social Media

In the Test versus England at Rawalpindi where Nasim first complained of shoulder discomfort.

Is this the same injury?

It’s the same injury. He was continued on to play BPL, LPL, Nepal, BD, etc.

If it is the same injury then PCB is to blame for this. Where is their management?
Are they sleeping as our premier fast bowler gets injured due to their negligence?
Shame on them for all this mess.

Think criticism of PCB for this specific aspect of workload management is a bit wrong. We as fans are not sure that he was redlining but are making assumptions after the fact.

These things happen. Even if they had rested Naseem, a shoulder issue could have flared up. We can't know it was caused due to letting him play LPL.

In the past 2 years, which matches has seen Naseem or Shaheen not bowl the first over?

The players themselves have to take responsibility as well. They know their bodies and injuries very well. The final 10-15% always comes from the player as the team management asks the player how do you feel? Any pain, discomfort?

Pakistani players have a habit of hiding, down playing niggles, injuries. Similarly they want to play every league in the world and when they don't get NOC's they go crying to the media, their close friends who are ex players to build pressure on the PCB.

For the main Pakistani players especially fast bowlers who are being compensated very well, the policy should be a maximum of one T20 league plus PSL and the leagues should only be the high quality ones like Hundred, SA20, ILT20, Big Bash, IPL etc

Players must also realize that they can't engage in continuous cricket across various leagues without rest.

Naseem Shah's case is an example where he played consecutive matches in the SPL resulting in physical fatigue for his body.

Babar was also playing alongside him but he didn't bother advising him to take a break.

Think it's different to the other shoulder issue he had earlier. Question is, why is the fragile boy playing so much cricket? 8th highest international workload since July 2022 + PSL + LPL + BPL etc.

Inzamam-ul-Haq speaking to the press:

Q: Is there anything being done to manage and monitor player workload?

IuH: I do not decide whether a player plays in white ball or red ball. That is the player’s choice and we respect that. However, we will be monitoring how much league cricket is being played by one player and what Pakistan’s commitments are at that time. In my opinion, for example, playing for two or three months in Sri Lanka can cause fatigue and can be detrimental for the player. We will be reviewing that as it falls under our work, but we cannot control whether a player plays red or white ball cricket.

Note how BCCI is resting Bumrah during series with Australia.

PCB's poor workload management has cost us big time. The injury of Naseem shah is a big blow for the team.

Between them, the Board and the players just cannot get it right can they.

There seems to be no proper planning regarding workloads.

They should have mapped out a players schedule for the next 12 months - which international series they will play in, which domestic cricket they will play, which leagues they will play in and which periods they will be rested for.

Other Boards do it, so why can't PCB.

Might be hard to do that considering the head of PCB itself changes every few months. If there is no plan or consistency up top, how can there be below?

Pakistani pacers have a shelf life of 1 month to 5 years max before they are injured or thrown out, I have a feeling the best of Ihsanullah is behind him

I wanted to open a thread about Workload management but find this one.

Cummins, Stac, Hazelwood , Bumrah , Shami ,Wood , Rabada etc most of Times don't play meaningless Jomodi Match while Sheheen, Naseem regularly Play .

Why is Pakistan not manage them properly ?

Shaheen has crossed the stage of "getting preserved". He is not that good anymore to be preserved. He needs more game time to find some kind of rhythm. In quest of swing in every condition he bowls too much on the pads. He never expanded his game. Batsmen are ready now. He is not smart like Trent Boult who is super athletic.

Pakistan's white-ball coach Gary Kirsten, on commentary during the Champions Cup, argued that Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah's workloads need to be managed properly:

"Fast bowlers are always under immense pressure to deliver and win games. When we look at our key resources, Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah have carried the bulk of the workload for Pakistan across all formats. Shaheen has bowled three times more overs than any other fast bowler in the world over the last 18 months. That's alarming—you’re bound to wear him down eventually."

The workload of all bowlers must be managed going forward, or we risk not having any bowlers capable of delivering match-winning performances. Players like Shaheen and Naseem Shah were more effective when they first started than they are now, primarily because they have bowled excessively. The problem is that these bowlers themselves often resist being rested, and the concept of workload management is neither well-understood nor practiced in Pakistan.

Salman Butt was chatting with Gary Kirsten earlier today on commentary.

Gary was saying the same that most of us have been saying for sometime that Shaheen has been playing consistently over the last few years and has bowled 3 times more than others around the same time.

He's going to be breaking down consistently if that keeps going on and even players need to know that they're of need of rests as they won't be at their best when the team really needs them to step in important games.

Our players are such that they don't want to stay out of the team as they're rather get injured or even if they're carrying a niggle they'll carry on playing as the medical team is a joke in itself too.

AI based workload management is needed

They are good at workload management of any up and coming players. Amir Jamal was dropped for today's game. Lot of insecurity among our main team players.

Management talks about the players workload yet they still arranged a 50 over tournamnet in extreme heat which I don’t understand. They could have easily chosen the months of winter for this event to avoid the risk of injury.

Tbh Shaheen is to be blamed. Back in 2020-2021 Mohd Amir warned Shaheen about being over zealous in representing Pakistan in all formats and in every meaningless game, refusing to take rest but he warned that once Shaheen will turn 26-27 (Which is very likely his real age now) his body will start fatiguing and breaking down which is what is happening today.

Naseem Shah confirmed in an interview that the pacers refuse to sit out of meaningless games and as part of workload management because of insecurity i.e. they will not get their place back in the team and someone else will perform and take over.

As I said the onus falls on everybody.

If the player is injured and regular fitness tests are conducted and it comes in that, then the team management need to step up and put the player aside on that basis.

If a player is carrying a niggle and is still wanting to play only to aggravate it in the game, it is also the player and the management at fault as how comes they can carry a player who is not 100% fit around the team.

There's clearly issues which need to be addressed in all seriousness and the players need to be held accountable too for their performances and fitness.

The other problem is the team's present trainer and physio Cliffe Deacon, he has been with the Pakistani team since 2021 and under his watch so many players have become unfit and injured. The team's fitness has gone for a toss under his watch. According to a sports reporter, he is too friendly with the players and he under pressure from them hides their injuries, masks their niggles and gives them all clear in fitness tests when they are not fully fit. Gillespie has discovered this and wants a physio, trainer of his own choosing going forward.

Pakistan should try bench players against Zimbabwe, Ireland, and associates when they play bilateral games.

No point in playing Shaheen against Netherlands.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, in an interview with a local media outlet, said:

"If you're saying that I have bowled the most in the world, three-time and so on—But if you look in the past at out legends like Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis, there was no such thing as workload back then."

"I don't understand why this issue has been going on for a year. We've perhaps overemphasized this issue. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. As I mentioned, everyone has their own approach to different formats. You need to be mentally prepared for how you will react. If you react lazily, you will never perform well.”

“There are instances where you might not perform as expected. You keep trying; your body is working to ensure that your deliveries are smooth and your batting technique is intact. Sometimes, a little time is needed to figure things out, you require support."

"This support comes from your management and the people close to you who send you as many positive messages as possible. That's when you receive the necessary support. The issue isn't about the workload being too much, but I feel that you should enjoy whatever format you are playing."

Hassan Ali during a TV show:

"Even our current players who are playing right now—they are playing a lot of cricket. Just like they talked about Bumrah and Siraj or anyone else, if you look at their recent matches, they have only played the important ones. They haven’t played matches against Zimbabwe, they haven’t played matches against Bangladesh. Sorry to say, but what do we think? That we have to beat Zimbabwe with the same strength? That we have to beat Bangladesh with the same strength?"

"We have mostly played full-strength teams all the time. Neither have we played too much cricket nor have we been injured too often. Now, if someone isn’t able to play much cricket, it’s because he played just one T20 match where he gave it his all. After that, he was rested and didn’t play the next series."
