Hope will be able to watch WC soccer in the stadium, finally, at Metlife Stadium, or at Phili . A very important item in my bucket list.

World Cup 2026: Fifa switches back to four-team group format

Fifa has switched the format for the expanded 2026 World Cup back to four-team groups.

The competition in the United States, Mexico and Canada was due to feature 16 groups of three because the number of teams is increasing from 32 to 48.

But the success of the four-team format at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar caused the governing body to reconsider.

The move expands the competition from its projected 80 matches to 104, including a new round-of-32 stage.

Fifa said the top two and eight best third-placed teams would progress to the last 32.

"The revised format mitigates the risk of collusion and ensures that all the teams play a minimum of three matches, while providing balanced rest time between competing teams," said world football's governing body.

The move was approved at Fifa's council meeting in Rwanda.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino said in December that the governing body was considering a format change after the group stages in Qatar included some exciting final games.

The four-team group format, with the top two going through to the knockout stages, has been used since the men's World Cup expanded to 32 teams in 1998.

The new round-of-32 stage means teams will have to play eight matches to win the tournament, compared to seven at the 2022 World Cup.

Fifa approved a men's international match calendar from 2025-2030 and said that "based on the new calendar, the Fifa World Cup 2026 final will be played on Sunday, 19 July 2026".

It added that the "mandatory" date for which clubs must release players for the tournament will start "on 25 May 2026, following the last official club match on 24 May 2026" and that "exemptions may apply to the final matches of confederation club competitions until 30 May 2026 subject to Fifa approval".

The women's international match calendar keeps its six international windows per year and includes the women's Olympic football tournament, which will take place from 25 July to 10 August 2024.

The MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will host the 2026 World Cup final on 19 July, while the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City will stage the opening group game on 11 June.

Mexico is one of three countries co-hosting the expanded 48-team tournament along with USA and Canada.

They have hosted two World Cups on their own, in 1970 and 1986.

Canada's first game will take place in Toronto on 12 June, with Dallas hosting a record nine matches.

The Azteca was the venue for Argentina striker Diego Maradona's famous 'Hand of God' goal against England in the 1986 quarter-finals.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino announced the plans on Sunday and also revealed the third-place play-off match will take place in Miami.

The semi-finals of the tournament have been handed to Dallas and Atlanta.

The tournament will last 39 days, 10 more than the 2022 edition in Qatar.

In total, 16 cities have been chosen including Monterrey and Guadalajara in Mexico, and Vancouver in Canada.

Boston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York, Houston, Seattle and San Francisco make up the US contingent.

Tariffs row makes World Cup 'more exciting' - Trump

US President Donald Trump says the political and economic tensions between the United States and its 2026 World Cup co-hosts Canada and Mexico will be good for the tournament.

Trump has imposed tariffs - taxes charged on goods imported from other countries - on the United States' two neighbours.

Asked how he saw the World Cup playing out, given the current trade situation between the three nations, Trump said: "I think it's going to make it more exciting.

"Tension's a good thing, I think it makes it much more exciting."

At the start of the week, Trump confirmed that he was moving forward with 25% tariffs on goods imported from Mexico and Canada.

In the days that followed, the Trump administration announced that it would be temporarily sparing carmakers from the import levies.

The next day, the president signed an executive order that placed a number of other exemptions on various goods.

Trump was speaking alongside Fifa president Gianni Infantino at the signing of an executive order to establish a taskforce that will oversee preparations for the tournament.

Trump will chair the task force, which will "co-ordinate with federal agencies in planning, organising and executing" the tournament.

Forty-eight teams will compete in the expanded World Cup in 2026.

Eleven of the 16 host cities are in the United States, with Toronto and Vancouver in Canada also set to stage matches, as will Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey in Mexico.

Azteca Stadium in Mexico City will host the opening match on 11 June with the final being played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 19 July.

The United States will also host the 2025 Club World Cup in June and July.

Japan becomes first country to qualify for 2026 men’s World Cup

Japan became the first country to qualify for the 2026 men’s World Cup after it beat Bahrain 2-0 at Saitama Stadium on Thursday.

Second-half goals from Daichi Kamada and Takefusa Kubo were enough for the Samurai Blue to earn its spot at next year’s tournament which is being hosted in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Japan becomes the first non-host nation to qualify for the 2026 men’s World Cup, with the three host countries already assured a spot in the 48-team tournament.

They never miss any World Cup generally. One of my favorite Asian teams.
