The IPL 2020 Thread

Robin Uthappa became the first Indian capped player to be sold at the IPL 2020 auction with Rajasthan Royals acquiring him for Rs 3 crore, while Piyush Chawla became the most expensive Indian player after being bought by Chennai Super Kings.

Among seasoned IPL campaigners, Yusuf Pathan, who had been released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, went unsold having listed himself at a base price of Rs 1 crore. India's Test specialists Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari - who had listed themselves at a base price of Rs 50 lakh - didn't have any takers either.

Vihari had been released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2020 auction, having been bought for Rs 2 crore at last year's auction.

Chawla, who had been released by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the auction, was bought by CSK and will complement Harbhajan Singh during the upcoming IPL season.

Uthappa, who had an ordinary season with the bat for KKR scoring 282 runs in 11 innings, had been released by the franchise. Rajasthan Royals won the bidding against KKR for the India batsman.

I just saw Yashvi Jaiswal's story on hotstar, he use to sell pani puri and stay in a tent. What an awesome dream come true story. 25 years ago cricket was an elite sports and cricketers had to have a second job to make a living. How have things changed, now 17 YO are making 2 crores and can truly make a living playing cricket.

It’s good to see franchises picking up young and promising players, especially batsmen, and not sacrificing them for the sake of ttfs and parchi players.

While Chris Lynn became the first player to be picked for his base price ₹2 crore by the Mumbai Indians at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 auction in Kolkata, India Test specialists Hanuma Vihari and Cheteshwar Pujara found no takers, on Thursday.

Additionally, Aussie all-rounder Pat Cummins shattered the cash counters, going for a whopping ₹15.5 crore ($411,135,020.00) to Kolkata Knight Riders.

Not only does this make him the highest-paid foreigner in the IPL ever (surpassing Ben Stokes' ₹14.5 crore transfer to Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017), but the selling price is also just ₹50 lakh short of the all-time IPL buy record of ₹16 crore (Yuvraj Singh to Delhi Daredevils in 2015).

This year's IPL is absolutely crucial with WT20 coming up. Every player will take it seriously to up their skills and wont be here just for pay checks.

England's Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran have all earned six-figure contracts in the Indian Premier League's player auction.

Morgan, who led England to World Cup success in 2019, was auctioned for £563,000 to Kolkata Knight Riders, who are coached by Brendon McCullum.

Kolkata also made Australia's Pat Cummins (£1.7m) the most expensive overseas player in IPL history.

Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer remain with Rajasthan Royals.

The England trio were not part of the auction after the franchise opted to retain them from last season's squad. Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali were also retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore respectively.

Jason Roy and Chris Woakes both went to Delhi Capitals for their base price of £161,000, while Sam Curran was bought by Chennai Super Kings for £590,000.

Curran was released from his £800,000 contract by Kings XI Punjab after his debut season in 2019 despite taking a match-winning hat-trick in one game.

Cummins, 26, is number one in the ICC Test bowling rankings and his pace and accuracy marked him out as a standout player in the auction.

Delhi and the Royal Challengers were both in for him, before the Knight Riders made their move.

At £1.7m, Cummins is the fourth costliest player in IPL auction history and the most expensive overseas signing, marginally surpassing the fee commanded by Stokes in 2017.

Only Yuvraj Singh in 2014 and 2015 and Gautam Gambhir (2011) have gone for more.

Report
Other big money foreign purchases included Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who joined Kings XI Punjab for £1.15m.

Chris Morris, who was omitted from South Africa's Test squad for the forthcoming series with England, was bought by Bangalore for £1.1m, along with Australia one-day captain Aaron Finch for £473,000 - his eighth different IPL franchise.

West Indies duo Sheldon Cottrell and Shimron Hetmyer were also popular. Left-arm bowler Cottrell was a £914,000 purchase for Kings XI in his IPL debut, and Hetmyer will play alongside Roy and Woakes for Delhi after they signed him for £833,000.

Among those who went unsold were South Africa's Dale Steyn and New Zealand's Tim Southee.

The 2020 edition, which begins in April, will be the 13th season of the IPL, which was won in 2019 by Mumbai Indians.

The IPL should really find a way to run for a longer period of time. Maybe start in February and end in late May. We have the money and the clout. Just need to be forward thinking. Players would prefer to play in the IPL over other leagues.

KL Rahul is the captain of Kings XI Punjab.

Coach : Kumble

Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair, Krishnappa Gowtham, Jagadeesha Suchith are from karnataka.

So happy for Cummins. He is a superstar and deserves this honour. Well done Eric

Why would CSK pick Piyush Chawla for such high amount when they already have 8 spinners in their squad??

RCB franchise left Steyn -1cr
Bought again for 2cr

:D :D

Retaining base price is extremly high and they already have retain spots in other top players so it doesnt make any sense in retaining old horse like stayn who is most likely going to not be able to play half of the games.
Still a good deal nevertheless considering he still can be deadly

Some players have signed for franchises they have played for in the past lol. Next year draft will be better as teams will make the major changes.

Unadkat has to be the luckiest cricketer ever. I mean most posters here if they roll their arms can bowl better than him. Yet this guy is earning money which perhaps we will not earn in our lifetime. So unfair

CSK has the worse team, no x factorin the team. Don't know why they still have Dhoni and Watson. They need to move on.

New Delhi - India's cricket board on Monday said a concussion substitute and a third umpire for no balls would be introduced in the upcoming lucrative Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament.

"The concussion substitute and the no-ball rule are new additions for the season," the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly, told the Cricbuzz website.

In August, new rules for concussion substitutes adopted by the International Cricket Council were used for the first time in Test cricket when Australia's Steve Smith was replaced by Marnus Labuschagne during the Ashes.

The introduction of a dedicated official for observing no-balls comes after several run-ins between players and officials with the standard of umpiring questioned.

A TV umpire instead of the on-field official called no-balls during trials in the T20 and one-day series between India and the West Indies in December.

The IPL, which was hit by a spot-fixing scandal in 2013, has emerged as the world's wealthiest league in the sport, with the tournament replicated by other nations such as Australia.

The 2020 edition will begin on March 29 with the final to be played on May 24 in Mumbai, the BCCI added.

All Star game has begun for IPL.

A team North+East teams players vs team from south and west teams players.

KXIP+DC+RR+KKR

vs

CSK+SRH+RCB+MI

:sa

All star game is interesting. Trp should blast.

Ganguly and team is rocking with new ideas.

Who would Captain each team and what would be the starting XI of each team. Will cap of 4 international players still apply?

I really want Dhoni to lead Southern/Western team. Infact, I would have like the idea of

TEAM DHONI Vs TEAM KOHLI

Damn, that would’ve made the headlines.

Not a fan of all-star games. There is no real passion, nor full commitment. Players simply dont perform 100%,, and yet public gets fooled by paying good money to see them.

I remember how Grame Smith talked about the lack of seriousness by Sehwag & Inzi during his team World XI vs Australia match.

Make 3 best teams of ipl led by Dhoni, Kohli & Rohit. Will be fun to watch.

Jofra Archer is ruled of IPL 2020 due to
low-grade stress fracture of the right elbow.

Big loss Rajasthan Royals. Hope this will give opportunity to Kartik tyagi and Akash Singh.

elbow is not the worst injury. He will be back. Shoulder and wrist hurt way more which could possibly lead to a debilitating injury.

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Friday announced a change in their logo ahead of the much-awaited 13th season of the cash lucrative T20 league. The announcement came just a few days after the franchise deleted their profile image, along with some old posts, and wrote a cryptic message on Twitter, with a photo that said ‘New year, New RCB’ and the caption - “B R A C E Y O U R S E L V E S.14th February, remember the date”. A day after the announcement, Vijay Mallya has a message for RCB.

RCB posted a video on Twitter in which they released the new logo, with the caption: “A new chapter begins”. In a reply to the tweet, Mallya said: “Great...but win the trophy !” In 12 seasons of the IPL, RCB have not been able to win a trophy even once. In the previous season, the Virat Kohli-led side ended with a wooden spoon.

“Virat came to RCB from the India U 19 squad. Virat has led India to great success and has been an outstanding performer himself. Leave it to him and give him the freedom. All RCB fans want that long overdue IPL trophy,” he wrote.

Speaking on the launch of the new visual identity, Sanjeev Churiwala, Chairman of Royal Challengers Bangalore, said, “The elements in the logo is a commitment to continuously entertain and engage with fans who are the force behind Royal Challengers Bangalore,” he said.

“We believe a change in identity for the club was necessary to effectively live and breathe this vision and celebrate the passion for cricket and playing bold,” he added.

Perturbed by the fast-spreading novel coronavirus threat, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is sensitising its contracted players, including the six who will play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), about preventive measures to deal with the deadly outbreak.

In India, 29 positive cases have been reported so far, including 16 Italian tourists. World over, the virus has claimed over 3,000 lives besides infecting more than 90,000 people.

“All New Zealand players, men and women, are being updated on latest developments, including best practice and preventive measures, as new information comes to hand,” NZC Head of Public Affairs Richard Boock said in a statement.

The six New Zealand players, who are set to play in the IPL are Jimmy Neesham (KXIP), Lockie Ferguson (Kolkata Knight Riders), Mitchell McClenaghan and Trent Boult (both Mumbai Indians), Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and Mitchell Santner (Chennai Super Kings).

Boock also said that the cricket board is in constant touch with the country’s health, foreign affairs and sports ministry to get regular updates which will ensure health safety for its players.

“NZC is in constant communication with its chief medical officer, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Ministry of Health, and Sport NZ, and is monitoring updates from the World Health Organisation to ensure compliance with best practice,” Boock stated.

The BCCI has already said that it is going ahead with the IPL as scheduled from March 29.

The Indian Board, however, is yet to come out with any travel advisory for foreign as well as national players.

During IPL, the number of selfie and autograph hunters increases manifold and it is expected that players might be advised to refrain from public gatherings given prevailing circumstances.

The England team, currently touring Sri Lanka, has been told to avoid handshakes and restrict pleasantries to fist-bumps.

Chris Woakes has ruled himself out of IPL. Think Delhi Capitals should sign someone like Jhye Richardson or Alzarri Joseph or Anrich Nortje.

It will be interesting to see who DD replace Woakes with as Rabada is injured so they will need some cover.

Coronavirus scare could impact the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL). Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope has commented on the spread of the contagious virus and its impact on the T20 league. Tope has said that IPL can be held on a later date in view of the spread of the novel coronavirus around the country. Defending champions Mumbai Indians are scheduled to host Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29 in the opening match.

“There is always a possible danger of spread (of contagious diseases) when large numbers of people gather in one place... Such (IPL) events can always be organised later,” Tope told mediapersons.

He also said that discussions are currently on in official circles whether to postpone the IPL, and a decision would be taken and announced shortly.

The minister’s remarks came just over three weeks before the start of the 2020 season of IPL.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly had said on Friday that the IPL will be held as scheduled. “It’s on...and BCCI will take all protection (against coronavirus),” he had said.

A plea has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the central government not to allow the Board of Control for Cricket in India conduct Indian Premier League T20 cricket matches from March 29-May 24 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The PIL, filed by advocate G Alex Benziger, is likely to come up before a division bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and Krishnan Ramaswamy on March 12.

“As on date, as per the website of the World Health Organisation, there was no specific medicine or to prevent or to treat the COVID-19,” the petitioner said.

According to the petitioner, the coronavirus was spreading all over the world rapidly and creating a huge epidemic disaster.

The Italy Federation League, one of the oldest leagues in the world, has been severely affected and the football games were being played behind closed doors with no fans allowed at any football ground until April 3 by the Italian government, the petitioner said.

The petitioner said he had sent a representation to authorities not to allow the BCCI conduct IPL T20 cricket matches.

As there was no response, he filed the present plea, the petitioner added.

BCCI is ready to play the IPL behind close doors but not cancel or postpone it.

BCCI is ready to play the IPL behind close doors but not cancel or postpone it.

Yeah because nothing is bigger than BCCI's greed.

It is also funny to see those who were supporting govt in putting restrictions on Kashmiris for the safety of people are now singing a different tune when demands of cancelling IPL are being raised for people's safety. It seems they are not even ready to give up watching cheerleaders dance.

Also lots of hypocrites will now come and say how it will affect thousands of people earning money through IPL but in reality this is nothing in front of what Kashmir is going through. :inti

All eight Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises Delhi Capitals (DC), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have called-off their respective pre-tournament camps due to the COVID-19 pandemic which had earlier postponed the start of domestic cricket's biggest extravaganza. The 13th season of the cash-rich tournament was scheduled for a start from March 29 before the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the country brought everything to a standstill.

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings reportedly cancelled the pre-tournament preparations in the aftermath of the deadly coronavirus outbreak on Saturday. Joining CSK on Monday, Virat Kohli starrer Royal Challengers on Monday revealed that their training camp has been deferred until further notice. "Keeping in mind the health and safety of everyone involved, the RCB Training Camp scheduled to start on the 21st of March has been deferred until further notice. We request everyone to follow the guidelines provided by the Health Ministry and stay safe," the official handle of RCB wrote on Twitter.

On Friday, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced that the 13th season of the PSL has been postponed following the government's decision to impose travel restrictions due to the Corononvirus outbreak. In the wake of the coronavirus scare, the BCCI has shifted the IPL 2020 from March 29 to April 15 and all other domestic tournaments including the likes of Irani Cup and the Women's Challenger Trophy have also been postponed.

India's biggest sports body also opted to shut down their its headquarter in Mumbai from Tuesday as all BCCI employes are insisted to work from home. "The BCCI employees were today notified that the headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium will be as good as closed in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. All the staffers have been advised to work from home," sources from the Board told news agency PTI on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is discussing the possibility of hosting a camp for its contracted players before the Indian Premier League (IPL). As reported by this newspaper, United Arab Emirates remains the first choice to host this year’s IPL in October, if the situation doesn’t improve in Mumbai. The board is looking at Dubai for the national camp, if UAE is finalised as the host.

Clarity on this will emerge after the July 17 Apex Council meeting, as the BCCI is yet to finalise its Standard Operating Procedures with regards to resuming cricketing activities. The Indian team management had informed the BCCI earlier that it wants at least a six-week training camp before featuring in any series. There are no international fixtures lined up at the moment other than a tour of Australia towards the end of the year. The BCCI wants to host the IPL in October-November.

While the franchises will have their own camps before IPL, the BCCI is understood to be looking at a short camp to assess the fitness of the players. But it is not going to be an easy task because of time constraints. For starters, if the IPL begins in late September or October, the franchises would expect the players to join at least three weeks in advance. This means the BCCI has to find time to host the national camp by September first week at least. Current restrictions in India make this logistically challenging.

That is why the BCCI reckons that the International Cricket Council Academy in Dubai will be the best place for the camp, as players can join the franchises without any hassle. “By the looks of it, UAE will mostly host the IPL, unless the situation improves dramatically in Mumbai. So the camp there makes more sense in every way possible. Once the IPL venue is decided, then expect things to move forward quickly,” sources following developments told this newspaper.

While the team management might not be able to host a longer camp, there are indications that the support staff of the national side will be free to stay back in UAE for a week to keep an eye on the players. Though the players won’t be able to report to them once they join their respective franchises, the support staff can keep a tab on their progress.
