The Jos Buttler thread: a modern-day potential great but needs to be backed in all formats

Speaking at an event for the MLB World Tour: London Series, Buttler said cricket could learn from American sports when it comes to fan engagement:

"I've no real [Test] ambitions at the minute, I am just really fully focused on white-ball cricket and all the stuff I am doing there, captaining England in that format."

"You never say never to anything, but I've had no communication with anyone to talk about red-ball cricket."

"Test cricket is very traditional and it started with that as the only format, It has 150 years of history behind it and tradition. T20 cricket only started in 2003, so people who love all the history and records [perfer it], but I'll tell you what: the kids on TikTok and Instagram aren't watching Test cricket."

"Cricket could absolutely learn from American sports. The Superbowl is obviously huge but when you have Jay-Z or whoever performing at half-time and it brings eyeballs which can be an introduction to the sport. If someone is introduced to the sport by seeing world stars in music, then they might really enjoy watching the game as well and I think that is something cricket could do really well."

"I hope that T20 and The Hundred is the way they can then learn to love Test cricket. If they love the Hundred and are say 'I really enjoyed watching Ben Stokes' and then mum or dad says 'well, you can see him for four or five days if you want in Test Cricket' that can be the great introduction for the younger generation into Test cricket."

Well Jos Bro, that is not how it actually works.. People who like T20 like it for its fun and entertainment value. They wont like the full experience of tests..

Jos Buttler had a horrific World Cup and his white ball game has declined. Maybe he should play red-ball cricket to change the mood for himself.

After few early failures, Mr Buttler is back in business

Jos Buttler is doing what he does best... he smashed a quick fire 50 in a huge chase against KKR and is still leading his team in the chase.

Jos Buttler has an underrated GOAT case for limited overs cricket. If we are discussing GOATS in LOI cricket, usually the names that pop up are Vivian Richards, Kohli, Sachin, ABD etc

But it’s very hard to make comparisons with Jos Buttler because he plays a very different role. In his prime, rather than the top order he played most of his ODI innings at 5 and 6. As an opener in T20s he’s arguably one of the most destructive we have seen.

In ODIs:
39.54 @ 117 SR

In T20s:
34.84 @ 144 SR (his SR as an opener is 150+)

Yes, top order batsmen like Kohli average much more. Kohli averages nearly 18 more but Buttler strikes the ball at a 24 higher point SR. He’s played his role as well as the top order batsmen in the GOAT discussion have played there’s.

He managed to get England their first ODI WC and followed up with a T20 WC in the span of 3 years.

The mighty Jos Buttler is back in form.... scored a quickfire 83 off just 45 deliveries to lead England to a convincing win in the 2nd T20I against West Indies.

Most 50+ score for England in T20Is

26 - Jos Buttler (116 Innings)

17 - David Malan (60 Innings)
14 - Eoin Morgan (107 Innings)
13 - Alex Hales (75 Innings)
10 - Jonny Bairstow (72 Innings)

Jos Buttler smashed a 24-ball 62 including 6 sixes to secure a victory against the Deccan Gladiators in the Abu Dhabi T10 League.
