The last time India chased a 100+ target successfully in tests outside Asia was in Adelaide, 2003. Since then, in the 20 such instances (including today's test match), they have drawn 12 and lost eight.

Discuss.

Dravid 233 & 72 at Adelaide is one of the greatest performance by an Indian performance in Australian conditions.

Disappointed with India, should be doing much better with the team and resources they have. If Kohli was taken early in the first innings India would have been thrashed. Nothing impressive about them.

That was when dravid was when in his peak. What a player. Always loved that guy

That's a remarkable stat. This match was pretty similar to the 1st Test vs South Africa this year. India's batting is too reliant on Kohli

In test chasing 200 or more in allein condition is almost impossible.I don't know when was the last time any team chase more than 200 in India .

Yes but this is about 100+, not 200+ and outside Asia...

Anyway to answer your question, 200+ has been chased by overseas teams in India twice only. England in 1972 and West Indies in 1987.

They failed to chase 193 in the first test vs England, but now have a chance to make amends in the fourth test.

Can they chase 245 to level the series?

They should be able to chase 245 in terms of the amount of time left in the game but if Ali and Rashid come into play and if they can hold onto their catches, India may be in trouble.

Another reason why icc ranking is a farce. A team that hasn't chased anything above 100 outside Asia in last 20 years is the current no 1 test team. Lol. :))

What should be the Test rankings according to you, and why?

Before you make that statement shouldn't you check it for other teams too?

Otherwise on what basis are you making this statement?

You do realise that the ranking system is relative right?

The streak looks set to continue unless India pull a few rabbits outta the hat

You saw the reviews turning? I dont think any more rabbits are needed. Even a blind one could see daylight between Kohlis bat and even a deaf one would know that spike was of bat-pad not bat-ball.

This is going to be tight and Ind are still in it. I am not a betting man but Ind might just sneek this.

Simple, add an impact factor, which should be a ratio of opposition ranking, pitch condition, their previous performance in such conditions, difficulty factor and the difference of performance as compared to other players.

Impossible to work with so many variables especially when many of them are subjective in nature.

Too many runs left and this is their last batting pair. One wicket and floodgates will open.

The wait continues.

Gripping test match but comfortable margin of victory in the end for England.

Barring beating BD (till 2010)none of Aus, SA, Eng and NZhave successfully chased 100+ in Asia. Works both ways.

Historically we have done badly in 4th innings but the nobility to even stand upto a tough chase in 4th innings has become even more glaring now. Can no longer brush it aside.

Individually, Kohli has a great 4th innings record but others have just folded up except for the Rahul-Pant partnership in Eng. it’s not just a mental block but raises questions on the ability of the batsmen as well. Not sure if there is any readily available solution

I don't recall a SENAW team chasing 100+ in 4th dig in India since I started following cricket.

edit: Checked, last time was 2000 when SA chased 164 in Mumbai test.
Australia chased 195 in Bangalore (1998).
WI did it in 1987, England in 1984 and NZ never.

So it is tough both ways I guess.

Pak chased 191 in South Africa 2007
Pak chased 248 in eng 2010 and 155 in ireland 2018

And this week it is even lower at 17.

His career record in 4th innings is 23 innings, 896 runs@49.77 with 2 100s and 6 50s.

Oh please, you make it sound like a year is a short period. This year he has batted six times in the 4th innings, which works out to more than a quarter of his career fourth innings. That is more than high enough a % to analyse. For argument's sake, let's look at a three year window i.e. 2015-2018. He had 11 innings in the fourth innings during that period and averaged 30.66. Would you consider that "great"?

Granted, he has a great home record in the fourth innings but even that is inflated. In fact just to show you how misleading his home fourth innings average is, his fourth innings home average is actually higher than his highest home fourth innings score!

More worringly for Kohli is his away record in fourth innings. Between, 2011-2014 it was an impressive 69.50. Between 2015-2018 his away record in fourth innings has dropped to a mere 26.00.

And so it goes on. His fourth innings record isn't what you think it is and all the evidence suggests it will continue to drop.

To be clear, the purpose of this isn't to disrespect Virat. Pretty much all batsmen struggle in the fourth innings. Rather it's to dispel your argument he is "great" in fourth innings.
