What's new

The most humiliating LOI defeat in Pakistan cricket history

It's just a T20 such things happen on a bad day.

I actually think pak genuinely has a good side, if they pick the right playing 11 . The batting is too top order heavy, a genuine finisher is made to open and an attacking opener being wasted at 3 . Let one of the younger players bat at 3 or 4, followed by Hafeez and Rizwan .

its humiliating, but i think most posters on here have realized this team is rubbish, we are 5th or 6th at the moment so games like these are expected, you cant judge our performances based on unrealistic expectations, our players are very imited in their skill set right now.

In my opinion ireland 07 or bangladesh 99 was alot worse, the team had more of a stature then

I don't think our best 11 is rubbish.
It can get us all the way through to a final of a tournament.

Our problem has been team selection.

Bit of over exaggeration,
This happens, teams like zimbabwe do have right to beat top teams,

Clickbait for sure. Too much weightage being givem to one loss when Pak has played last few series' brilliantly.

In fact this just made the last t20i imteresting, and Pak will win the final one with min 5 overs to spare or over 50 runs...

It is T20, the most unpredictable of all formats, shocks happen in T20, however this match doesn't even make it to the footnote of news unlike 36 all out which made worldwide news. Just as the OP said then, the team will move on.

Well done to Zim for provided this shock!

I have a different viewpoint than OP.

People are upset but really, there is not as much of a shock or embarrassment. It is a T20 game, things happen.

Many things to fix, particularly middle order. Also coaching set up.

However, since Pakistan has won many series at home and away after ANZ tour, it should be seen as a reminder of what still needs fixing.

This is exactly why you should never play more than 3-4 regulars against bottom tier teams. There's absolutely nothing to win but everything to lose. :91:

I mean even India lost two T20is to Zimbabwe in 2015 and 2016 but at least they could say they were trying out a team full of youngsters.

People are continuing to delude themselves by saying that this is a one off t20, that things like this happen, that India was beaten by Zim 5 years ago.

What will it take for some fans to lose their delusional optimism. An innings defeat to Uganda U19? Even then I reckon posters will come up with excuses

Disappointing.

At this point, remove any thoughts of winning a WC.

Netherlands is a better team than us.

This shows that big teams should take teams like Zim and Afghanistan seriously in this format. They can only improve if they get a chance to play against top teams regularly but sadly Big 3 tries hard to not give them a chance to improve. Well done Zimbabwe. :inti

LOL

When Pak wins series after series in T20s they don't matter. Now after a single loss in a series which PAK still can win this is the worst loss ever?

Mind you PAK had to win this game and played poor cricket. But this is nothing more of an individual being happy because the team that he hates with a passion lost a T20 game.

Pak is not amongst the top teams ATM and if you look at their recent record its quite good but they still have a lot to improve.

But then beating South Africa, Sri Lanka, England and then India on the way to winning the CT17 was a fluke?

What would you say if Pakistan were to win this years WT20?

Yes, CT was a fluke just like the 1992 World Cup. As per my calculation, such flukes only happen every 25-30 years.

So there is no possibility of pakistan fluking the upcoming WT20. We are one of the worst sides around.

Many improvements need to be made.

Misbah's team selection is horrible, remove him.

Babar should bat at 3, Hafeez at 4, Malik at 5, Danish at 6, etc.

Anyone who thinks that we can go to the World Cuo without Malik given our recent performances needs to get their head checked.

Agreed. We have no chance of a World Cup win. If we can't understand how to bat on a sticky wicket, we'll fail in India.

Pathetic stuff.

Some desperate fans trying to cover this embarrassment by terming it as a one -off.

If Pakistan has absolutely destroyed SA- B and Zim-B before this match and somehow lost the plot today then it's fine. Such things generally happens from time to time.

Unfortunately Pakistan has been even struggling to victories against these depleted teams.

I don't think our best 11 is rubbish.

Our problem has been team selection.

This is the type of delusional viewpoint that has infected not only the fans but the management as well.

We don’t know what our best 11 is because we don’t have a best 11. There is mediocrity everywhere.

We always talk about selecting the right players because don’t have any right players. Anyone who is not in the squad is supposed to be the savior.

If Talat and Khushdil were selected instead of Asif and Danish, our fans would be claiming that the latter should have been picked.

It is simply a coping mechanism by our fans who refuse to accept or perhaps don’t have the capacity to accept that we are rubbish.

You pick any so-called best 11 and they will be far, far inferior to the best 11s of India, England and Australia.

India lost multiple times to Zim and Bang in WCs and bilateral series. Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid all failed in crucial games against Zim and bang. Does that mean India is a joke of a side ?

This is definitely up there with one of Pakistan’s worst loi defeats. I couldn’t believe it. Even my 8 year old brother was cursing Misbah and saying stuff like the 30 yard circle is the boundary line for players like asif ali and danish aziz. The reality is that Pakistan are a very mediocre team now and all credit goes to the team management and Misbah. Apart from 2-3 players all the others are worried about being dropped so they are playing for themselves not worried about the team result to be honest. This is what happens when you chop and change and pick people on likes/dislikes make excuses and take no accountability. A few days ago Misbah wanted credit for the South Africa victory?? Well he needs to come take the blame for this defeat as well then. Accountability starts from the top. Babar needs to stop being a selfish captain and forcing himself to open. He must come at 3 for the betterment of the team. Pakistan need to play positively from the start to reduce pressure on the middle order. And Rizwan who’s done well as makeshift opener moves down to stabilize the middle order. Bowling was also disappointing vs South Africa C. PCB need to bury the hatchet with Amir and get him back if they wanna compete at the World Cup. Shaheen hasan and Rauf combo won’t do the trick vs top teams to be honest.

Part of the blame can be given to the slow pitch but still this should be a big wake up call.

I’d go with this team for the next series after this defeat

Sharjeel
Fakhar
Babar
Hafeez
Haider/Malik/Azam khan
Rizwan
Imad/Shadab/Qadir @11
Faheem
Hasan/Hasnain
Shaheen
Rauf/Amir

For god sake it's a meaningless T20 match . it's can happen with ever team so nothing serious .but seriously Pakistan middle order is pathetic .Malik even Umar Akmal is better than Asif ali .

This might be a fluke but don't even think about comparing zim of andy, grant flower, campbell, Streak, Olonga etc with this joke of a team

Lmao, I cam here after the defeat see the reactions after the defeat. You guys didn't disappointed with.the OTT reactions 😂

It's a damn bilateral T20I.

The problem with suggesting that it was just meaningless match is the fact that Pakistan loses about 90% meaningful matches as well.

Well played Zimbabwe. Not a fan of bilateral T20s, I rate IPL higher than bilateral T20s.

But from Zimbabwe point of view, a great win.

It is definitely up there. Think about it, the first choice Pakistan team could not chase 119 vs not even a first choice Zimbabwe team. Wow.

sorry to say its just a reflection of who we are as a nation.. no pride in defending our country's name

Winning a series is all good, but let’s not forget HOW we won those games. For example, the T20 series against South Africa, who were playing without 5 of their main players. We won 3-1, but we probably could’ve lost all of them. When we win games, we should be dominating weaker teams, consistently.

That T20 series win vs South Africa was basically papering over the cracks. There’s problems with the team, but when we play weaker teams then it’s hard to see, until we lose against those weaker teams.

What delusional fans will say is, “oh it’s just a bad day at the office”, or “people are overreacting, it’s just 1 game”.

Lol I knew you will create a thread like this but relax pakistan mein talent hain and you cannot deny babar scoring a hundred at a strike rate of 200 against saffers plus fakhar along with sharjeel are very dangerous for the world cup

Pakistani players don't get the kind of exposure indian players get at the Under 23 and 19...once that happens talent will be oozing through the ranks...Take the example of paddikal who is 20 and scored a century batting alongside kohli and facing world class bowlers at this age.Pakistani players do not have that liberty at all

I was absolutely sure that with this middle order Pakistan will lose a game to Zimbabwe, and actually it was a Zimbabwe without Ervine, Williams and Raza, three of their better players.

Even in South Africa, that last game Hasan Ali bailed them out, else it could have been a drawn series.

I think Kyle Jarvis is out as well

Misbah-ul-haq needs to go!!!

In 2007 defeat against Ireland, Woolmer took it to heart and gave his life away.

Will Misbah take a little shame and resign now?

Not in a million years. He doesn’t care about Pak cricket. All he wants is that big fat paycheck.

I think Kyle Jarvis is out as well

Jarvis has been immensely unlucky with infectious diseases recently: coronavirus, malaria, and tick bite fever. He's out for 6 months.

Pakistan cricket is the poster boy of mediocrity and lives and breathes defeats.

However, surely, this has to top everything?

You cannot sink lower than failing to chase 119 against Zimbabwe in a T20I with your first-choice top 3 on show.

Not only did Zimbabwe choke our run rate, they actually dismissed us for 99.

Absolute shambles. How do we recover from this? I don’t think we can.

The players, selectors, fans, tv analysts – all of them deserve this unprecedented humiliation.

Extreme and hysterical responses. It’s a game.
Pakistan team has played well lately and was a bad day today. It happens.

Yeah, OTT reactions. Bilateral T20s are pointless.

Tests, ODIs, WT20s and IPL Only these four matters. Pakistan should forget this loss just as a bad day!

Woke up expecting a convincing win, and boy Misbah did not disappoint. :asad1

Hawkeye Could you say my thanks to Misbah for rejuvenating the good ol' winning days?

The fact it was a T20 makes it nowhere near the worst defeat. In a hit and giggle format, even a minnow can upset a mediocre side like Pakistan.

Before today, Zimbabwe had lost their last 9 T20Is with their previous win being against Singapore in October 2019.

The win over Pakistan is Zimbabwe's first T20I win over a leading Test-playing nation since their win over India in June 2016.

I am not surprised to be honest. only Pakistan can do this. the "cornered tiger" tag was attributed to Pakistan for a reason. this is the reason.

I am sure in next match, Pakistan will thrash Zimbabwe.

Pakistan typically lifts their games against established teams and in big tournaments and gets relaxed against weaker team. Hence we see that kind of surprise results when Pakistan plays.

For me, the most humiliating defeat was the loss to India in 2011.

The only time I have truly been hurt and heartbroken at a defeat

And guess what? Misbah was the chief architect in that as well

Still remember , Sunil Gavaskar commenting "Very strange and defensive batting from Misbah"

When you get humiliated in this fashion, there needs to be repercussions. Someone has to pay the price.

You sack the coach or the captain or the selector or maybe the head of the cricket board resigns. This is not just a bad game; it is a calamity.

You cannot let it flow under the bridge unless you are a top ranked team across formats and you simply write it off as a flash in the pan, nightmarish result.

Pakistan is ranked 4, 5 & 6 across formats, and yet, we are told that this is just a one-off result and hence not a big deal.

It is incredible. This is how immune we have become to our own mediocrity.

Difficult to gauge which was the worst, but today's loss is right up there.

This is a Zimbabwe team who are frankly awful and have been struggling. They are missing players and the political system means that cricket is run in the country in a shambolic fashion.

To lose to them and that too by being bowled out for 99 is nothing short of disgraceful.

It’s one of our most embarrassing losses, wouldn’t say the most humiliating.

That loss to India in Round 1 of the CT17 was a humiliation tbf, but Pakistan did return the favour in the final.

This is humiliating for sure. But not unexpected. People kept harping on about the victories we received from South Africa what they failed to realize was those victories were won by few of our batsmen. This loss was bound to happen. Under Misbah we have regressed heavily. What was once a number 1 twenty20 team is now falling to minnow level.

Defeat was expected in at least one of the three games after watching the first T20I. It could have been dicey if Zim held on to their catches there, especially Rizwan's. This just exposes the issues with the middle order. Pak should play Sharjeel as opener and move everybody down one slot in the batting order. Rizwan should still open as he's very successful there. Asif Ali and Haider Ali are no longer reliable. Faheem seems to have regressed in his batting after the NZ, home SA series.

You are being very melodramatic. It is just another game. The Pakistan T20 team has consistently performed well and we are very proud of their performances. They have the most T20 victories. They have been the #1 team for a consistently long period . They are going through a rebuilding phase . Losing is part of the sport and you have to acknowledge the wonderful display by Zimbabwe. That is the beauty of sports and no one can take their superiority for granted . This is the time to really support the team and look for a winning combination. They can form a formidable combination for the World Cup. This is just a wake up call and reemphasizes that we cannot be complacent!

It's debatable whether this is Pakistan's most humiliating defeat of all time, however I reckon that this is the most humiliating performance from a top 8 team in at least the last 10 years.

Losing a tiny run chase against the second string bowling line up of the 11th ranked T20I team- a team which has been defeated comprehensively by teams such as Afghanistan and Ireland and even suffered a loss to Singapore- with your "best XI" playing surely tops all other humiliations seen in the last 10-15 years.

So are you gonna ignore Pakistan’s major flaws even in those victories?

Does the beloved opening poster knows that his Indian team has dropped two T20’s against the Zimbos out of 7 games they have played? The last one being in 2016.

This was Pakistan’s first defeat against Zim in 16 matches.

Yes the batting sucks and the team is mediocre, everybody knows that.

I agree with most when they say this loss is only behind Ireland 2007 and Bangladesh 1999.

If the middle order wasn't exposed before, it sure is now. This loss doesn't take away from the fact that this is Pak's best top order lineup of Babar, Rizwan, Fakhar, Hafeez but this absolutely has to be the end of Asif Ali and Danish Aziz. Look, people won't like it and it is playing musical chairs here but we're gonna have to bring Shoaib Malik back now. Not a tourney player, I know, but Pakistan is not blessed with insane power hitters and the middle order needs stability more than anything. Also the WT20 is in India where you'd fancy a Shoaib Malik-type player in your XI as he's a great player of spin. There's still one more T20 left with these squad of players to win the series, so post this series Pak should have this top 7:

Babar, Rizwan, Fakhar, Hafeez, Malik, Haider, Faheem.

Inzi speaking about this defeat:

“If you look at today’s performance, nothing was different except the luck which didn’t favor them this time. Pakistan has middle-order batting issues for quite some time now"

“It was Pakistan’s first ever defeat against Zimbabwe in T20I and it badly exposed so many things. On priority, Pakistan’s middle-order as this time our top-order failed to score runs. In previous matches, Babar, Fakhar, Rizwan scored so it helped Pakistan save the game otherwise middle-order order’s performance was same"

“You can’t bring batters with very less First-Class experience. It can work for bowlers as they get enough time to make their way through but batsmen only have a single chance, if they get out they lose that chance"

“Haider Ali is an example for us, the youngster has so much talent but you can’t play international cricket based on just talent. You need to work hard and realize playing according to the situation. You can’t play in same style everytime. Haider needs to be strong at reading the situation"

It was a very bad defeat but definitely Not the most humiliating ever, you are going way over the top as usual.

Now I say this as I was personally roasting the Pak team during the match commentary thread but some of the factors you have to take into account:

1) it’s a 20/20, so yeah Pak should still beat mediocre teams like Zimbabwe but the shorter the format the better chance they have. On any given day a minnow can and has beaten the bigger teams in the past, it makes logical sense if you think about it.

2) The pitch was terrible for a 20/20 - you couldn’t play good shots on a good length against the seamers. That’s not excusing Pak not chasing this score, it was chaseable if smart cricket was played like getting lots of doubles and good strike rotation but you couldn’t hit yourself out (20/20 should be about hitting though).

3 ) Nobody in my social circles was talking about it because it didn’t get broadcast on any of the main channels. What I mean is if this was an ICC tournament match sure it would be epic humiliation but it wasn’t so they got away with bigger consequences.

Then why don't we win tournaments? Outside of CT2017 this isn't exactly a normal occurrence.

This, it's only just another game, or it was only a T20I match attitude, is exactly why we aren't amongst the top teams in world cricket any more.

We have just lost to an extremely weak and inexperienced Zimbabwe team and been bowled out for 99 by them.

Wake up people, it was a horror show of a performance.

Since 2019, how many T20 series did Pakistan actually win :danish

What does since 2019 to with this? History will tell that PAK always has been a formidable T20 side with many matchwinners since 2007 in this format.

A loss vs Zimbabwe hurts but a single loss in a series is really not the end of the world.

Very interesting and a thoughtful point made by Inzi.

Perhaps you can favorably look at a couple of BOLWERS to be fast tracked based on the extra talent, but can't do that with the BATSMEN.

The talented batsmen must go through the grind of domestic cricket, and perhaps also some Jr. level cricket in the international arena. Batsmen must become seasoned and well trained before transitioning into the national squad.

This is a great insight.
Thanks Inzi

shouldn’t this be common sense by now. That’s virtually a fact.

shouldn’t this be common sense by now. That’s virtually a fact.

Can't say.
If this was a fact then our professionals/selectors/Think Tanks/coaches/admins, who are highly paid to get their job done, must have displayed the notion of knowing this. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

That was killer embarrassing today and I agree with Mamoon. We still have one more T20 left god that was embarrassing

LAHORE: Former Test captain Intikhab Alam has expressed his surprise over the shocking 19-run defeat of Pakistan at the hands of a much weaker Zimbabwe in the second T20I in Harare and has urged the players to show consistency and the coaches to put together the best possible combination in view of upcoming T20 World Cup.

Talking to Dawn after Pakistan’s humiliating defeat which leveled the three mat*ches series 1-1, Intikhab said the team lac*ked consistency and until it was not achie*ved, Pakistan would face several problems while facing top teams of the world like England, India, New Zealand and Australia.

“It is not a good sign that despite our coaches working with this team for a long time now, they could not analyse the real strength of their players and are still experimenting,” he lamented.

“Look, other countries show more consistency in all departments as their selectors pick the players after thorough consideration,” observed Intikhab. “But we are doing experiments in every match and that is an evidence that you don’t know what exactly you have to achieve and you select players randomely and hope for a fluke performance from them.”

He said though Pakistan had won against South Africa in the ODIs as well as the T20 series, there were many loopholes still in the performance especially in middle-order. He added that the tour selection committee had failed to stabilise the middle-order combination.

“The team management should give clear targets to every player that what it wants from the openers and other players and similar targets should be set for the bowlers,” said the former skipper. “In T20 cricket every team needs to score 55 to 65 runs in the first six overs and this target should be met if you want to set a big total for the rivals,” Intikhab said.

He also criticized captain Babar Azam for winning the toss and electing to field first. “You have won the last series against a big team of South Africa but such a decision of opting to field first shows you are defensive against a rather weak side like Zimbabwe,” he said. He also pointed out that the first T20I was also a close game and had Zimbabwe held a couple of catches, the story would have been different.

He agreed that pitches and weather in Zimbabwe were different to South Africa but “as professionals a player have to be adjusted with playing conditions beca*use this is demand of international cricket.”

Intikhab advised the Pakistan team to remove all the flaws before the World Cup which is not very far and the time is running short. He admitted that the team management was relying more on the players who performed in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) which was not an ideal strategy.

“For every country the performance in the domestic cricket system is most important in the selection of the national team as leagues like PSL are not the real yardstick of assessing a player’s strength. If the selectors are relying on the PSL, then it is a mistake as we have to make our domestic system stronger and groom the players for tough and pressure games in international cricket,” he concluded.

A T-20 game can not be the most humiliating ever.

20th June 1999.
World Cup Final.

The darkest and most humiliating day in Pakistan cricket history. When Steve Roger Waugh lifted ICC Cricket world Cup in front of Smiling Wasim Akram.
Scoring 132 all out in World Cup Final
Till this day it is the lowest score ever in world cup final. That day Pakistan could have become the team of 1990’s decade winning 2 world cups. But despite all the luck favoring Pakistan in 1999, they lost against South Africa and India back to back but still topped the super six table and faced easier opponent in Kiwiz at Semis.

16 years rewind, India scored 183 a low score in world cup final 1983 but they were victorius.

2nd darkest ever day has to be 1987 world cup Semi Final at Home at Gaddafi Stadium. Facing a vastly inferior Australian team of Allan Border. Imran’s team wilted badly under pressure. Ramiz Raja’s first over run out, Steve Roger Waugh’s smashing of Saleem Jaffar in 50th over, Miandad’s slow paced innings and Above all failures of Ijaz and Salim malik. Pakistan were hot favorite of 1987 world cup. But trophy went to Allan Border at Eden Gardens Calcutta.

For me these 2 defeats snatched 2 guaranteed world cups from Pakistan
1999
1987.

Instead of 3 we only have 1.
Our Field Hockey team instead never really choked apart from 1990.
Ended up winning 4 world cups.
Cricket team has under achieved.

1.5 years later, the pathetic team has managed to outdo itself against the same opposition in a World T20.

Beautiful. :)))

Wasn't really that embarassing tbh. Actually I find rooting for Zimbabwe quite easy regardless of who they play against.

The loss to Ireland in 2007 and the 3-0 loss to Ban in 2015 were more humiliating because of the manner of the losses.

1.5 years later, the pathetic team has managed to outdo itself against the same opposition in a World T20.

Mamoon the soothsayer.

Scores of people dismissed the original/opening post via the excuse that it was a meaningless match.
They surely can strike out that alibi now.

Is England a pathetic team since they lost to Ireland again? Pakistan won the T20 series in NZ and took it to the final game against England. And played semi final last year in T20 WC by giving your beloved team a beating of a lifetime with 10 wickets win.

You are such an old annoying uncle type troll :)

As for the topic, most humiliating would be folding for 123 in 99 final against Australia. Pakistan was favorite to win the tournament and was dominating the whole tournament (other than one off Bangla game), and then they played one of the most disappointing embarrassing game

Today's one is because the Pakistani batsman took it very lightly.

From start, they were not trying to score quickly + a lack of skill against bounce. It was just 131 to chase and they took it deep and in the end panicked.
