What's new

The most popular name for a baby boy, born in the UK in 2022 is....

Intriguing. Boys name would likely get a number of right wingers riled up there :)

Not surprising. Most Muslims I know has Muhammad in their name some where. Subcontinent Muslims have it the most.

May also indicate a fast growing Muslim population.

Yes and I imagine that the birth rate amongst South Asian families is significantly higher than in White households.

I would expect it to slow down with immigration control and especially among British south asians who I’d feel more or less ought to follow a similar path to white folk, e.g. prioritising career/education and then children.

1st or 2nd gen would come here with 67 children :))

The South Asian families of my acquaintance have one or two kids.

Even though it's a name used by most Muslims and at that , say 2% of the entire population...that's not even accounting for girls, this seems ludicrous.

The white majority population probably has such a diverse spread of boy names, the concentrated effort by a small minority can help top the charts :warner

A more interesting comparison would be the majority's most popular male baby name as a proportion of its population vs Muhammad for baby boys among Muslims.

At least in subcontinent it was tradition for Muslims to have "Mohammed" in their name before their first name. However when you go to the west it makes it appear as "Mohammed" is your first name, so most Muslims in the west no longer do that. My father and all my uncles have Mohammed in their name, however none of my cousins nor I have it.
