India is considered by many as one of the biggest democracy in the world. Many leaders of great stature had grace the political arena of India but at the same time some had been disgrace for the Indian political system.

So in your opinion who was the best politician in the history of Indian polity. Also you guys could name the most detestable leaders in the history of India below including the current lot of politicians.
 
India is so big & diverse that its impossible to have consensus on best or worst

Some will say Lalu is worst but for backward castes he was Messiah

Same for most leaders. We dont agree on anybody

He was a meek man who surrendered in front of Taliban in Kandhar. However, that shameful episode was more on Vajpayee who was heading that government.

I'm not sure what Gadkari has done to be included in the best. He's mediocre politician who would probably have been better off as a bureaucrat.

Similarly it's stunning to see Sharad Pawar in the worst. Maharashtra's development under successive congress governments with a long stint under him would probably put him in the running for the best though his later years have been impacted by his declining health and the standard Indian nepotism.

It's best to divide politicians and leaders as successful and unsuccessful or effective and ineffective rather than this silly classification.

I don’t know if you are from Maharashtra, but Sharad Powar has been synonymous with corruption for a long long time. Sugar mill scam, wheat scam, land scam, you name it & the king of Baramati had a stake in it. The guy’s worth is thousands of crores. In his heydays he was known as the Chanakya of Indian politics. Shrewd & extremely poisonous.

The other guy I probably missed mentioning is Jyoti Basu. Guy single handedly strangled all industries in Bengal. Never let Bengal grow. Hate all communist politicians like him to the core.

You are right though that Gadkari is more a bureaucrat than a true politician - he keeps to himself but has a great track record of delivering projects. Maybe the reason I like him. Maharashtra & India owes a lot of its infrastructure development to this guy.

Yes I've lived in Maharashtra for a huge chunk of my life and while I'm very well aware of his corruption( I actually lived in a massive township he owned Benami), I don't really take corruption into account while rating politicians. I just assume each and every one of them is corrupt and then look at rating them on other factors.

Under Pawar and his predecessors, Maharashtra has consistently remained the most industrialised, least unequal (thanks to sugar co-operatives), most stable state in the country. For that I would excuse him 5 times the corruption.
 
In terms of controversy, one politician who has been involved in several corruption cases is Lalu Prasad Yadav. Have heard of several corruption cases of his. Not sure if they are 100 percent true or not. Maybe some Indian bro can share some insights.

Well he helped rescuing Indians from the Talibans, was a decent finance minister and a good external minister who helped Vajpayee in breaking the ice with Pakistan in the Agra talks.
 
Best - Sardar Patel. should have been India's first PM.
Worst - Lalu. On the top of all his corruption. He made his illiterate wife CM.

Agra talks? worst thing ever. should have let mushsarff hang himself. Musharaff's humilating end would have happened sooner if India had ignored him

Worst- M.Gandhi, nehru, indira g, sonia g, , vp singh, farooq Abdullah, lalu yadav

Most adorable : Indira Gandhi, Naveen Patnaik, Kamaraj, Lal Bahadur Shastri, P.V.Narasimha Rao, Manmohan Singh, A.B.Vajpayee, Narendra Modi.

Most reprehensible: Morarji Desai, V.P.Singh, I.K. Gujral, Laloo Prasad Yadav, Sharad Pawar, Mamta Banerjee, Jyoti Basu, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi.
 
Worst: Moraji Desai, Indira , Sanjay, Rajiv, Jyoti Basu

Best: Shastri, Kamraj, MGR, Sardar Patel, N rao, Manmohan Singh, AB vajpayee, Ambedkar
 
So finally we have found a leader on which majority of Indians do feel proud, Narasimha Rao. I also liked his policies

Indira Gandhi - stood up to that Nixon cretin, broke Pakistan in two and Shimla Accords .

Vajpayee - humiliated PAK in Kargil

Actually I am changing my reply - the worst of the lot is Nehru. India wouldn’t be half the mess it is right now if not for this dude who screwed us both economically & politically. His worst decisions - declaring ceasefire & going to the UN when we were about to win the war in 1947, creating a special status for Kashmir in 1950 & not taking up the UN permanent seat and giving it up to China (who does that!). Also his socialistic policies killed entrepreneurship and encouraged corruption/sab kuch chalta hai attitude. Worst politician ever.
 
Indian elections have just kicked off, so have you voted for your favorite politician yet?

Most adorable has to be Ghandi for me, top top dude for a short heighted person
 
Nehru was a proper pain. Rajiv Gandhi was rather likeable.
