With catchment of millions of people within few minutes’ drive featuring about 200 brands and an indoor amusement park, with a roller coaster ride which is the biggest in South Asia. The mall is soon to become the most loved entertainment destination of Karachi.

the mall is in a very dense area of the city but also away from the more well off areas. So certainly people wont be spending a lot there for the top top brands to come

i give it 2 years to become a run of the mill, run down mall with substandard brands

Karachi posters

What are the mall situation in karachi? Do you guys impose tickets on males who come alone?

Because alot of discrimination goes on in centaurus islamabad where the idea is to discriminate rawal pindi bois

Wow but why would anybody do that??

On topic: The entrance looks good.

lol No ticket

but Saturday is family day so single males cant go in on that day normally

Doubt it will be as good as Dolmen in Karachi. Dolmen is world class and comparable to malls around the world.

Such a weird rule but guess it makes sense families will spend more than single males, what about single female why do they get to come, how is that fair??

Every mall goes off steam in a few years,i was really excited when a huge mall was coming next to my home bu then the traffic it brought i started hating it in 6 month.

Tbf the parking situation and roads near the area improved 10 times not to forget garbage collection as well.

What!
you mean to say they check whether you're on your own or with a family when going in to a shopping mall?

I'll have a heck of a problem if that were the case since I usually let my wife (when the kids are not with us) go in and wander around the ladies fashion stores whilst I sit listening to music in the car, and only join her later when I think she's ready to do some 'normal' shopping. Going by the above sounds as if I'll need to ask her to come back to the entrance for me to be allowed in!

Besides, can't be good for trade for the stores catering to clothing etc. for young men.

There used to be a textile factory where this mall is being built and it was quite huge factory. The residential area is starts right next to this mall. Its right opposite to UBL Sports complex.

If you are talking about defence and Clifton as in well off areas, then yes its very far. But if you are talking about spending boy you are wrong, about half a Kilometer you have Imitiaz Super Market on weekend you don't have space to set foot in that place let alone navigate trolleys. There was a need for another Super store/mall in this area. This area is near to Dastagir, Liaquatabad, North Nazimabad, Gulshan etc. so there will be a lot of spending.

yes youre correct in your understanding

but why would you wait in the car anyways. id rather just sit in a coffee shop ot sth. Karachi is very hot!

i think issue is when 3 or 4 male friends cant go in. Or even a dad and son cant go in. Basically have to have a female with you to enter

PS; Reason apparently is so that creepy guys cant enter to harass women.

Yup, but there is catch, there is a list of people who can go without entery, and that includes lawyers, foreigners(passport) and beuracates etc.
Meaning, no one could sue them..........

poor stuff. this is just discrimination.

lol this is the stupidest rule I have heard.. I can understand in clubs where you need couple entry to maintain ratio and not to cause trouble but why in malls??

The enterance looks beautiful..how many malls are there in general in Pakistan? In my area there are so many malls now it's unbelievable.. Every new mall that gets built is called "asia's best mall" lol

Currently, I live in the UK. So waiting in the hot outdoors is not an issue! :))

That should be taken care of inside the mall when/if a woman get's harassed by 'creepy guys'. There's likely to be enough security / CCTV around to take care of that. But stopping all males (eg father and son as per your example) not accompanied by a female from entering the mall is basically accusing all of these males of being potential creeps and harassers of females.

That just makes it worse.
Says a lot about a society where males out shopping and unaccompanied by women (see my post above) can automatically be treated as being creeps, and where entrance to public shopping malls can be determined/restricted according to your social status.

There is another mall in islamabad. Safa gold. Me and my friends were standing outside a shop and the managers comes out and tells us to move as we are blocking his shops view.

i actually wrote a letter to editor which got posted in dawn

a lot of big ones are opening in recent years

a culture is developing where people go to malls for shopping rather than go to individual outlets

its like a day out as theres a lot of good snack and dessert places as well as good restaurants in the top malls

but i also feel lot of people just waste their time due to a trip to the mall.

Earlier if i needed a pair of sneakers Id just go to the Nike store or a local sports shop and be done with it in 15 mins.

Now when you go to the mall its a hour plus experience as you end up roaming around, checking other shops for clothes or whatever, and top it with ice cream /coffee etc at the end.

good for families with young kids i would say but i find it inefficient tbh

In India you would see many single guys hanging out in malls ,ogling and stalking girls who for some reason are always giggling.
We do it sometimes when we are penniless and need a place to pass the time for free.I mean who wouldn't love to be in a place filled with so many beautiful women.

True this same culture same in my city around 7-10 years back and now everyone in my city is imbibed with this mall culture..

I used to wonder how do shop owners in a mall make money? The rent must be huge and with so many malls and shops there just isn't enough consumers for everyone to be in profit.. Then someone told me that the shops are being opened by people with blackmoney and they fudge their shops sales and convert their blackmoney into white by paying some tax, which made sense to me..

Personally I don't like going to malls but its become necessity now coz of all the brands being in malls only.. I can understand the family experience part I guess it's a good outing for a family maybe in 5-7 years time I'll be one of those families..

Should have named the mall and shop in your article mate.. Also couldn't you approach the police to file a complaint of discrimination against the manager/mall?

In Pakistan you only need to open up a restaurant for that. Hot and Spicy is one that i would assume

i did name it, but the editor removed it, i think for obvious reasons.

the Pakistani culture is of such that even if you complain about something you get called mummy daddy(pampered kid) or burger bacha(same meaning). Everyone here tries to act street smart...

Consumerism of the kind that is being promoted with these malls and stuff in a country that doesn't produce anything and relies on imports for even the most basic needs will not end well for the economy.

Ahh ok was a good read though..it's a pity when you get discriminated against and no one is there to support you.. I guess at the end of the day best you could do is not visit that mall and tell whoever you meet about this story so their sales might get impacted by 0.00001% or something.. Small cictory

That's ok for the up and coming middle classes. But what about those at the bottom rungs of Pakistani society? Especially if/when active measures are taken to exclude them ("not wanting the riffraff and bringing the 'ambiance' of these shiny new malls down") from entering these establishments? Simply creating a greater divide between the haves and have-nots which can only result in consequences down the road.

Ermmm no.Most malls are branded clothes and textiles is pakistan biggest export. Its a myth that Pakistan does not produce and relies on imports I work in the industrial supplies sector and our manufacturing base quite developed for a devoloping country.

Desi people only have two sources of entertainment, food and shopping. That is why a new "biggest in Asia" mall springs up every year, and new restaurants come up wherever there is some free space.

Our manufacturing base is not "quite developed" by any means. The only industries of note are textiles which has been on a downward trajectory followed by basic chemicals, sugar and other low value added industries. Manufacturing accounts for about 14% of our economic output which is embarrassing, especially when you consider that it has actually gone down in the last few years(15% in 2000). For comparison, the corresponding figure for developing economies that are actually developing and not just called developing because third world is no longer a politically correct term, tends to be north of 20% and even that's low if the end goal isn't to remain developing perpetually. It's 21% in the Philippines, 21% in Indonesia, 23% in Malaysia and 28% in Thailand, all countries with a significantly higher per capita output than Pakistan. There's a reason we're running double digit(as % of GDP) trade deficits for years.

The most Ironic thing about this mall is that, its built on the area where once a textile factory used to be which of course would have exported material to the world, now opposite is going to happen.

Which mall bro ?

Bro even in India you get kicked out if you walk in with poverty clothing.

It really isn't.

Also, in terms of the thread, is it really the biggest mall in Asia or is that a lie?

No way is it the biggest mall in Asia. But the built quality, retail spaces, car park provisions and many others features which makes it comparable to some of the best malls in the world.

So crowded as if people havent seen a mall before. Might have been normal 10 years back, not now.

Certainly the folks who visit dolmen in Clifton didn't give this one a try it seems if
You look at the pictures

What's the big deal about this mall? In America going to mall isn't fun or cool anymore, maybe it was in the 90s but businesses have moved into town squares which is like an open air market/bazaar.

Imtiaz has a lot of spending

and theres a lot of people in this surrounding area so total spending will be a lot

but i dont think spending per person will be that of dolmen clifton

pakistan's a poor country, last time I visited that mall on the beach next to the knockoff of the burj al arab, I noticed that not many people were buying stuff there cause the brands weren't that good and cost a lot more than what most people make and why would anybody visiting from America want to buy some out of fashion clothes that cost about the same.

Y'all need more amusement parks, skate parks, museums and music festivals not more malls and restaurants :))
