The Black Caps are set to be without captain Kane Williamson for this year’s ODI World Cup after it was revealed the star batter had suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and was headed for surgery.

White-ball skipper Williamson sustained the knee injury in the IPL season-opener on Saturday (NZ time) while on debut for the Gujarat Titans, attempting to take a catch on the boundary.

After laying on the ground in agony, then soon later being carried off the park, he was on Sunday ruled out of the rest of the IPL campaign by his Titans side.

Williamson then arrived back in Auckland on Tuesday, on crutches, and was headed for a scan and to see a specialist.

New Zealand Cricket on Thursday then delivered the news that the whole country had hoped wouldn’t be coming.

“Unfortunately for Kane, he has ruptured his ACL in his right knee,” Black Caps coach Gary Stead said in a video interview with NZC.

With six months until the start of the World Cup – which runs from October 5 to November 19 – and ACL’s typically taking a six-to-nine-month rehabilitation period, Williamson, who is set to undergo surgery in the next two to three weeks, is unlikely to be fit for selection for the this year’s event in India.

In a statement, the 32-year-old sent a message of thanks for the support he had received since the injury, and vowed to still help the team in whatever capacity he could.

“I’ve received great support over the past few days and want to thank both the Gujarat Titans and New Zealand Cricket for that,” he said.

“Naturally it’s disappointing to get such an injury, but my focus now is on having the surgery and starting rehab.

“It’s going to take some time, but I’ll be doing everything I can to get back on the field as soon as possible.

“I look forward to doing what I can to support Gary and the team over the next few months.”

While Stead acknowledged it would be “unlikely” to have Williamson for the World Cup, he was refusing to rule out his star man just yet.

”From our perspective, we certainly haven’t given up hope on that, and Kane will meet a number of milestones in the next six months or so,” he said, adding that the reason for a slight delay in the surgery was because best practice was to wait for swelling in the knee to first die down.

After their final home international of the season – the third T20 against Sri Lanka in Queenstown on Saturday – the Black Caps head to Pakistan for five T20s and five ODIs, starting next weekend, then through August/September go to the United Arab Emirates for three T20s, England for four T20s and four ODIs and Bangladesh for three ODIs, and Stead admitted that with most of the World Cup planning already in the bank, Williamson’s injury would “definitely” cause a re-think.

“You take Kane the player, for a first start, but then Kane the leader and the person he is within our group as well, it’s a huge spanner in the works for us.

“Our first thoughts, obviously, are with Kane at the moment, it’s a tough time for him, it’s not an injury that you expect is going to happen, it comes out of the blue and it obviously hits you pretty hard at the time.”

Williamson, who in 161 ODIs has scored the fourth-most runs for New Zealand (6554), as well as the fourth-most centuries (12), has a princely average of 47.83 and will be irreplaceable at No 3.

At the last World Cup, in 2019 in England, he was named player of the tournament, having been the fourth-highest run scorer (578 from nine innings) at an incredible average of 82.57, with two half centuries and two hundreds, as the Black Caps came up just short in that dramatic Super Over tie against England in the final.

Ruptured ACL is a very frustrating injury not only for any professional athlete but also for a " regular" person , like me. Takes a long time to recover, needs surgery and weeks of rehab . I had ruptured ACL during a cricket match , had surgery and physical therapy but was able to run NYC marathon 18 months later .

Shouldn’t let your main players play this long league just before main event .

I agree. But, hard to prevent players from playing in these leagues. Players want to earn money.

Tough luck. Could have happened in an international event too. Can happen during practice. He just attempted to take a catch on the rope.

He played IPL and got injured. Serves as a lesson to future cricketers.

NZC Release:

Kane Williamson will require surgery on his injured right knee, after scans on Tuesday confirmed he’d ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament while fielding for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.

The standard rehabilitation timelines mean that Williamson is now unlikely to be fit and available for selection at this year’s ICC ODI Cricket World Cup in India.

After receiving the news Williamson wanted to acknowledge the support he’d received since sustaining the injury.

“I’ve received great support over the past few days and want to thank both the Gujarat Titans and New Zealand Cricket for that.”

“Naturally it’s disappointing to get such an injury, but my focus now is on having the surgery and starting rehab.”

“It’s going to take some time, but I’ll be doing everything I can to get back on the field as soon as possible.”

While the World Cup now looked unlikely, Williamson vowed to support the team in any way he could.

“I look forward to doing what I can to support Gary and the team over the next few months.”

Williamson is likely to have surgery on his knee within the next three weeks.

Honestly speaking, the main players should probably stay away from any league in the year of a World Cup. You can play these mickey mouse leagues every year but one has to stay in form and then wait 4 years for a world cup. Lifting a world cup vs lifting an IPL/PSL/BPL/etc trophy is not even close. Will be a blow for NZ.

Wish him quick recovery , kane williamson is in his prime and this injury may well take a year from his best years.
You can get injured playing any cricket , cant blame any league for any injury. How do you expect players to not play in the best cricket league in the world which also gives them more than enough retirement money?

Not everything you hear at home is true :))

Don't think you guys understand how modern sport works. World Cup/Patriotism/playing for nation etc is very sub-continental thing. For western countries, sports is about providing entertainment and they get paid for it in return. It is a job for them and company that pays them more, they would offer their services there. Only we consider playing for nation as some sort of badge of honor, sacrifice for country etc. Its all about mindset and it simply dosen't exist outside sub continent. Take football for example, Karim Benzema was practicing for Real Madrid when France was playing world cup final.

IPL is the premium cricket tournament which pays the most to the players in return of entertainment. There is a reason AB Devilliers retired from internationals but continued to play in IPL. Most of the time, players from West Indies, New Zealand, SA or even Australia, England comes to India to play JAMODIs/T20Is for their respective country as an audition for an IPL auction. Heytmeyer, Pooran, Topley, Bracewell there are many examples. Recent example being Cameron Green who used that Australia tour of India ODI leg as an audition which fetched him massive IPL contract.

Let me put it this way - if someone is offering me 15 million dollars for 2 months work, that will be my main event. No need to get emotional or touchy about it. That is why IPL is the main event as far as players are concerned.

Benzema wasn’t picked to represent France in 2018

Which footballer in history has given preference to club over national duty?

That would mean every other league is more important than international cricket - which is simply not the case right now, sorry.

not true at all.

A lot of cricketers belonging to England, AUSTRALIA, NZ, take extreme pride in playing for their countries and have prioritized playing for their country over these leagues in recent times.

Didn't Paul Scholes retire in 2004 internationally ?

It’s never for money. There is no league football going on during international break. Footballers are better off going with their national squad and earning caps for their country instead of doing nothing or going to harrods for shopping.

From what I read, Scholes probably didn’t feel motivated anymore considering Lampard and Gerrard were playing more advanced positions than he was for England. Although I’m not too sure about this technical aspect of it.

There is always risk of injury and KW knew that when he accepted the IPL offer.

He could have NOT taken that risk keeping in mind the World Cup but he chose not to do that.

Almost all players were injured while fielding something we do at any level. Not like they are going to reduce the intensity of fielding. Most of the Indians picked up injuries during international matches. It is little more freakish this year. This is his 8th season. Probably first time he got injured in IPL? Besides Kane already carried several injuries. Tennis elbow injury for more htan 15 months. Then missed out matches due to shoulder injury. He is an ultra active fielder who is likely to pick up injuries somewhere as he gets older.

Shouldn’t let your main players play this long league just before main event .

World cup is 6 months away boss. By that logic they should not play any local game as injuries are not league specific and can happen even when not playing. If i remember bairstow got injured playing golf between 2 series and is out of action for last few months.

Some injuries occur due to bad luck but many injuries are due to too much stress on the body esp in the case of fast fast bowlers.Shaheen is a good case.He was playing every format with very little rest. When your body doesn’t get enough rest the chances of getting injured are high.

Does he gets paid for the whole season or not? How does it work out in case of an injury?

He will get paid in full. He picked up the injury while playing for them. I think he went for 245000 or something. Base price.

Wow, not a bad gig then. Sit back, watch some TV and watch the money flow in :))

How do you enforce this? The individual boards force players? Force is never a good thing.

If force happens, what actions will a player take?

In this case, it was entirely Kane's choice. He chose it. He bears the consequences. Which is how it should be.

Well said.

ACL can happen to any professional athlete and is more likely to happen if you have been playing a sport for a long time and past the age of 30.

Should just hope he gets well soon. Extremely difficult injury to recover from

Ideally you would want to do both. Now he has become like Boult who has relieved himself from central contract and focuses on league cricekt. Not just IPL Other leagues as well. ook on the bright side. If he had picked up this injury against Srilanka he would have missed both world cup and IPL which would have been even worse.

No one can force this. It's up to the individual to think about it. That's why I said it is up to the players to stay away, not the boards who will decide this.

If I was a player, and I knew this was going to be my last ever World Cup, I would not risk my body for any leagues in the year of the World Cup. Because I know that after this, I will never get a chance to lift the WC ever again. Money will come and go, and mickey mouse leagues will come and go every year, but some things are never going to come back. That's my 2 cents on this subject.

Messi has won how many leagues cup? Yet he cherishes which one more? The several league cups or the one and only WC? I can't speak for all individual but most people wants to be remembered for the WC. You name will be forever engraved in the history. Give it a couple of generations, do you think many people will remember players like AB, Ganguly, etc? But I bet you players like Imran Khan, Dhoni, and Pointing will be talked about and their names will be known... why, because their names will be forever engraved for lifting that cup.

Messi has won plenty collectively and individually in his career, but nothing has changed him like the WC. Never seen him so happy. Messi feels he's completed everything in football and is so relaxed.

The WC is the ultimate prize in football and cricket.

I guess for Sangakkara county cricket is the most premium cricket tournament since he kept playing that after retiring for Sri Lanka.

Players retire from international and play domestics like county and IPL due to less pressure, less exhausting and good money

It’s hilarious the mental hoops these keyboard warriors jump through just to prove their point.

Yes IPL is the most important T20 league in the world, but no way does it compare to international cricket. Maybe some Indian cricketers do think this way, which is why they crash out of every ICC tournament in humiliating fashion.

As the road to recovery continues, Kane Williamson discussed the possibility of representing New Zealand at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India.

In April, Kane Williamson underwent surgery to address a ruptured ACL suffered during the Indian Premier League (IPL), raising doubts about his participation in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

However, encouraging developments followed, as Williamson resumed practice earlier this month and was also part of New Zealand's training camp held in Mount Maunganui.

Speaking to the reporters at the Bay Oval, Williamson said the possibility of playing in the World Cup has been a huge motivating factor.

"To be at the World Cup is always special. It's still just guesswork at the moment in terms of when the day is or how it's tracking at the time," Williamson said.

"There's a lot of work to do. I am just really following the programme, with the professionals for physio, the support staff and New Zealand Cricket. And it's tough, because you do have some good days, and then you have a few variable ones.

At the time of the injury, Williamson thought that the possibility of being fit in time for the marquee event was 'slim' but the New Zealand batter has since made remarkable strides in his recovery journey.

"Something like that [World Cup] in the back of your mind is obviously motivating and you want to keep seeing those improvements," Williamson added.

The possible return of Williamson would be a huge boost for New Zealand, who was the Player of the Tournament in the 2019 edition. The 33-year-old was the highest run-getter for the Black Caps with 578 runs in 10 matches at 82.57 while leading the side to the Final.

New Zealand's campaign begins with the rematch of the memorable 2019 Final against England in Ahmedabad. Prior to the World Cup, the two teams will clash in four-match ODI series in what would be a crucial prep for the tournament.

Kiwis to provide Williamson every chance to prove fitness ahead of World Cup
New Zealand will give experienced captain Kane Williamson every chance to prove his fitness ahead of a potential fourth ICC Men's Cricket World Cup campaign in India this year.

Williamson was deemed an unlikely participant in this year's World Cup when hurt his knee while fielding during the opening match of the Indian Premier League in March, but the 33-year-old has recently made strong progress in a bid to lead his country into battle at the 50-over showcase.
The veteran right-hander is pushing hard to be named in New Zealand's 15-player squad for the six-week tournament that commences in India on October 5 and recently returned to batting in the nets alongside his teammates as they gear up for an important white-ball series against England.

Teams have until September 5 to provide the ICC with a preliminary squad for the 13th edition of the World Cup and final lists then need to be lodged prior to the September 28 cut-off date. Squad changes can only be made after his date with approval from the ICC.

New Zealand forced into squad re-shuffle ahead of England series
New Zealand coach Gary Stead said while Williamson was progressing well in his bid to return to full fitness, the team's influential skipper still had some boxes to tick before he would be considered for selection.

"(We have) got about two weeks from now until we name that side," Stead said.

"(We are) going to give him every chance and use that full amount of time.

"He's in full rehab mode, he's back batting in the nets again which is great to see. He's progressing really well but again there's a lot of work for him still to do to make sure he gets to where we need him to be."
Williamson is a veteran of three World Cup campaigns already with the Kiwis and starred at the most recent edition when amassing 578 runs at a lofty average of 82.57.

He stroked two centuries and a further two half-centuries during the event and was instrumental in helping New Zealand go agonisingly close to a first World Cup title when they lost a thrilling final to England at Lord’s.

Williamson's experience on the big stage will be vital for New Zealand as they attempt to go one step further in 2023 and Stead said the team was looking at all avenues possible to have the skipper included.

"They are all the things we are weighing up right now," Stead said. "There's a chance that even if Kane was named that he wouldn't be available right at the start of the tournament. But he also might be, and he also might not be ready.

"It's still a little bit of crystal-ball gazing where he will be at. Yes, of course, we want him at the World Cup but there is that bigger picture in mind that we want Kane Williamson fit for the rest of his career.

"They'll be honest conversations that Kane and I will have with each other around exactly where he is at, to make sure we get the best outcome for our team but also the best outcome for Kane Williamson and his long-term career."

New Zealand's World Cup campaign commences with a re-match of the epic 2019 final when they take on England in Ahmedabad on October 5.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has been given about two weeks to prove his fitness for the men's one-day World Cup, which starts in India in October.

The 33-year-old, who is his country's ODI and T20 captain, tore cruciate ligaments in his right knee in April.

Williamson suffered the injury playing for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.

"We've got about two weeks from now until we name that [World Cup] side," said New Zealand head coach Gary Stead.

"We're going to give him every chance to use that full amount of time. He's in full rehab mode, he's back batting in the nets again, which is great to see.

"He's progressing really well, but there's a lot of work for him still to do to make sure he gets where we need him to be."

BBC

Regular BLACKCAPS white ball captain Kane Williamson will be included in the BLACKCAPS 15-man squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup in India as he continues to recover from knee surgery.

After injuring his knee playing in the IPL in March, Williamson has made sufficient progress in his recovery to allow him to be included in the squad for the tournament starting in October.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead said while Williamson’s selection doesn’t guarantee he will be available for the first match, he continues to make strong progress in his recovery.

“Kane has applied phenomenal dedication to his rehabilitation and has been supported by a strong group of experts around him. He’s left no stone unturned in trying to get back playing cricket at the highest level. We are delighted to be in a place to select him.
“At the same time, he’s also kept perspective about his recovery and hasn’t wanted to rush or force his way back too early. As we’ve previously said, it’s great he wants to play cricket for New Zealand in the long term.”
Stead noted there wasn’t a specific match timeline on Williamson’s return to play.

“As we’ve said throughout this process we want to give Kane every bit of available time to aid his recovery. The World Cup is not a short tournament and we will continue to monitor his progress over the next month ahead of the first tournament match.”

Williamson himself said he was delighted to be in a position to take part in what will be his fourth One Day Cricket World Cup.

“Through this entire process I have tried to keep an open mind on when I might be able to return to cricket and not get too focused on one date or match. Being selected doesn’t change that and I know there’s still work to do and day by day goals to tick off to get back on the field with the team.”
The remainder of the BLACKCAPS ICC Cricket World Cup Squad for India will be named on the 11th of September at an event in Auckland at Papatoetoe High School, Ish Sodhi’s old school.

it will provide stength to their middle order for sure which seems so fragile right now.

well it does not matter this time they are not going to make it to semis. However his inclusion is a big boost for nz cricket

His inclusion is a big backward step for NZ cricket. They are already a weak team in Indian conditions and this guy is finished in white-ball cricket.

Since October 2017, his strike rate is a pathetic 74 in ODI cricket. They needed Bracewell a lot more for that balance. They should be looking to get more out of Will Young, Mark Chapman types rather than go back to KW. Even Latham is a little too slow and you want to bring back KW?

This is good news for India. At least there's one top 6 side that we have a good chance of beating quite easily. @Aman :inti

So he is back - but is this more of an act of kindness from NZC towards KW?

he is a back bone of NZ side. for sure it will boost the moral of the team.
Kane Williamson against World Cup teams not including SL/AFG/NED and since CT 2017.

Average = 46 , Strike rate = 71.30

That's an absolutely terrible record against top sides. Mind you, he has not played SL/Afghanistan in Asia either in this period. It was all in England/NZ and he last played them 4 years ago.

They were probably better off persisting with Chad Bowes or someone who did well in Ford Trophy.

More like morale-killer with bat. He's a nice guy and a very good leader of men but he's absolutely finished in white ball cricket.

Multiple injury scares for New Zealand ahead of CWC23

The fourth ODI between England and New Zealand at Lord's saw as many as three New Zealand players walk off the field injured.

With less than a month to go for the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, New Zealand have been dealt with multiple injury concerns on Friday, 15 September at Lord's.

Having taken a screamer in the slip cordon to send back Jonny Bairstow, Daryl Mitchell walked off the field with an injury to his ring finger. Commentators were heard saying that Mitchell has apparently dislocated his left ring finger in a major blow for New Zealand.

If that wasn't bad news enough, they soon lost opener Finn Allen and veteran pacer Tim Southee also to injuries.

Allen failed to hang on to a difficult chance off Joe Root in the 12th over, and while making the one-handed attempt hurt his finger, forcing him off the field.

Two overs later, off Ben Lister, Root was put down again, this time by Southee, who dove across with both hands but saw the ball hit his thumb and deflect to third man.

New Zealand have issued an update on Southee, stating that the pacer needs further assessment on his finger and won't come back on the field. Mitchell was spotted with a tape in the dugout and appears fine.

Two of the three players are named in New Zealand's squad for the World Cup while Allen missed out. The Kiwis are already concerned about Kane Williamson's return after a long layoff and while he has been named in the World Cup squad, the batter is yet to make a return to competitive cricket.

Avg of 46 ain't bad, and his SR is low because he has strikers like Conway, Glenn philps batting around him. He himself bats long and usually increase the Sr to 90 when he gets going.

Williamson is 10x the batsmen babar is, 5000x the captain. He's needed for one last WC.

No he's not needed at all. They are already a slow lineup with Conway and Young opening. And they barely have any bowling left with Milne and Southee injured. Jamieson and Lockie have been smashed in this series as well. They simply can't rely on just Boult,Henry and Santner to restrict teams.

They have no Bracewell either. Latham already bats like an anchor, anyway. They need to get another hitter in that lineup - Tim Seifert perhaps

I'm actually surprised no one made a thread on this. Everyone's favourites for semi final spots before Asia cup was typically Australia, England, India and Pakistan.

How come no one has mentioned NZ? Imo, their 2023 team is significantly superior to their 2019 team which had a relatively weak batting lineup.

Bowling is goated, and based of the way their playing warmups, It seems Devon Conway, Darly Mitchell, Williamson, Mark champman, ravindra and all these lads seem to take a massive liking to indian conditions, they feel at home and are playing all star level cricket here.

I defo think their either the 3rd or 4th Strongest team in the tournament. Their defo superior to Pakistan atm. And no before you start attacking me, I have nothing against Pakistan, I'm just speaking my opinion, the team is hella strong.

I'd keep my eye out for NZ this cup.

India Australia England New Zealand has always been my Top 4.

NZ are perennial semi finalists of ICC tournaments.

They can't win. Not enough quality there.
They'll make it all the way to semis or even finals by playing some very clever cricket - using very good defensive tactics etc. But individually , they just don't have the quality to win the World Cup

How one match can change the perception completely. All of a sudden with players like Conway, Rachin, Kane Williamson, Matt Henry, Glen Phillips all of whom are solid match winners, a final looks so much realistic now.

Every single time, New Zealand gets underrated right before ICC tournaments and every single New Zealand proves how great they are.

New Zealand is the best tournament side in cricket in terms of how much they elevate their game when the tournament begins compared to the series that they play before. To some extent, I feel the same way about Pakistan, but New Zealand takes this idea to an extreme. They easily won the ICC Test Championship Final, but have otherwise just barely missed out on many tournament wins the last few years.
