What's new

The price of attritional cricket

And if we don't win you will get on the back of Misbah and the team . So it's lose-lose for you.

You mean win-win for me.

I could care less what happens to this team. I'm only interested in Windies doing well. Their team has far more potential.

You play whichever style wins you games.

Master plan, seems to be working.

Yes just played a shot that came real close to the fielder.

Really checking the Windies fielders as to what extent they are active on the field, A master plan of giving them a dose of sleep by batting and then time to time making them alert about presence of the master on the crease.

People who are actually praising this kind of play are the ones to follow score card after 30 minutes.

its working, but lets not pretend its working because of ingenious planning or skill

its working because of a LOT of dumb luck

remember we lost test matches twice within one session on our NZ/Aus tours. lol so much for skills. It's incredible some Pakistan fans have totally forgotten those tours and have totally gone into to the denial mode. They need to know this is the brand of cricket that's causing them to be ranked with the likes of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and not Aus,India or England,SA. Do we want to be a top team or a minnow? We need to clear our minds.

I'm not as worried about this going into the future

Shehzad is being a selfish git right now, but I think tests are the one format he may not be insufferable and can strike at a decent click. PLus there is always hope sharjeel may come back, sami also has more strokes than he has displayed. Azhar is fine as he is

Likewise for Babar once he establishes himself. Haris would also do similar.

Asad is the big unkown. He still doesnt know what his game is unlike Azhar. Asad is a stroke maker and he needs to realise this and look at his 100 vs england, that was his best.

We did reach no.2 in Test Rankings under Inzamam, I am pretty sure of that... it happened once for a brief period

We were very good under Inzi.

drawn series against India in India.
Beat India at home.
Beat England at home.
Beat Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.
fought hard against SA in SA. The last time we won any test in SA was under Inzi.
Also thrash NZ.

That was really a dream team not built on flat empires of UAE.

That was Aus's greatest team ever. You cannot compare that team to the current team. The current Aus test team would even fold like a house of cards against Mathews Sri Lanka. So we all know their standard in test has gone down in playing spin. They do not possess great spinners either like Warne to attack back.

The series we lost against India had full of young players because the seniors most retired after 2003 world cup.

The arguabaly two greatest test teams of Asian conditions have not been beaten by Misbah XI in a single series. I'm talking about South Africa and India.

Run rates for visiting teams since 2010:

Windies - 2.96 RPO
UAE - 2.98 RPO

Let's take a look at how the super aggressive, always batting at 3.5-4.0 RPO because they're so amazing and attacking and awesome and aggressive and Pakistan need to copy them Aussies did when they travelled to those places this decade.

Aus in WI - 2.94 RPO
Aus in UAE - 2.93 RPO

Wow, such aggression, much attacking.

Yes, we should beat India without playing them.

You're shifting the goalposts. :19:

Pakistan going nowhere at the moment

last 4 overs 0 runs
11 runs off the last 10 overs or so

that session is a classic example where this can all go wrong, It's Sarfraz or bust with this strategy.

Yes, the pitch is tough, but early one we didn't take advantage of batting conditions, and what Asad just did was pathetic. Shehzad, Azhar and Asad all have been poor regardless of what the scorecard says.

Now the onus is on an 18 year old kid to salvage a decent lead.

Azhar Ali is so overrated. Terrible batsman even against a side like WI he's struggling.

ComeOn. He was an average KRL batsman who averaged below 20 on wickets which assisted seamers. He was limited.

A good FC season from nowhere and with Yousuf falling apart Azhar was picked. Hw fought and he fought hard for first 2 years.

Than he had good 2 Test seasons followed by severe loss of form. Hats off to the selectors who dropped him when all thought that He would be retained as per consistent selections policy of Misbah.

And Boy. Once Azhar got dropped from Pakistan team He turned it around. He came back and scored that uncharacteristic Azhar's Century when any other Pak batsman would have looked to draw the Match and save his Spot in the team.

From there on apart from one series vs SL in SL Azhar has been A* and the good batsman didn't become very good infact became excellent player.

Azhar is the name of no Drama and hard work. He has onfield discipline and grit of Younis and off field discipline of Misbah.

He has a certain method of playing Test Cricket. You may not like it. But He is an excellent Test player and currently one of the Best Test Openers in World Cricket.

Your 1 and a half line post can be termed as a Blasphemy of Test Cricket.

Yesterday I was thinking that whether any Pakistani Cricketer has Scored a Test tipple and Test double hundred within 6 months ? I think No. This might be one of those very rare moments of entire Test Cricket history. Here you my friend are calling him Terrible batsman. Show Respect to National heroes especially Honest Ones. He is a Proud Son of the Soil and wears our chaand sitara on his Chest.

I can't believe Azhar Ali the test batsman has haters.

The style of cricket that Pakistan mastered under Misbah.

Seems England borrowing the Misbah style of attritional cricket.

England batted in ugly manner but it was quite effective. West Indies are probably out of the game now.

It worked for England, but there needs to be a balance in the lineup - some attritional batsmen and some who can up the tempo.

Is what Pujara doing now correct - attritional cricket at its best or worst?

The attritional battle.
Cheteshwar Pujara facing a barrage of short balls from Mark Wood, who's bowling from around the wicket.

Fair enough but that is a defeatist mindset.

Was the aim to draw the game?

No, but with Rohit, Rahul and Kohli having been essentially dismissed for nothing on the scoreboard and India basically starting at 0/3 with two terribly out of form batsmen in the crease, it left India with no choice other than to go for the draw.

Unless Pujara was banking on a miracle tail-ender partnership, his innings still doesn't look great in hindsight. If he had decided to add a few more runs in place of dots, India could have declared earlier and given themselves a better shot of victory.

Hindsight is always 20-20. Pujara did exactly what he was tasked to do. This is why Pujara is in team, not for hitting fours and sixes nor even for pushing run rate along. India has many others who could do that.

Others tried to do what they were tasked to do. Some of them clicked too and that’s why we are where we are in this match right now.

Pujara is a core member for India’s test team and till we get another Dravid or an inform & fit Gill, he will stay. Indian Selectors can be stupid but not so stupid to throw Pujara away.
