PML-N leader Mian Javed Latif on Sunday claimed that the party supremo Nawaz Sharif is expected to head back to the country after Eid, adding that the coalition government in his opinion will not last longer than six months.

The PML-N leader said the decision pertaining to Nawaz’s anticipated return will be discussed with the coalition partners and added that all decisions would be first brought up with constituent parties of the coalition.

Regarding the myriad of problems facing the country, Latif suggested that the only solution to remedy the prevailing woes was to hold fresh elections. “However, there was this task of election reforms that had to be done prior to elections,” he stressed.

He pointed out that the issues regarding the electronic voting machines (EVMs) and overseas voting rights were two primary issues that are to be addressed at the earliest.

He said: “EVMs are susceptible to external interference, and similar to RTS, this system can be tempered with easily. As for overseas Pakistanis, exclusive seats can be created for them to elect their own representative, similar to the seats in Kashmir where seats are reserved for migrants.”

The overseas Pakistanis, he added, can be allowed to vote in constituencies as they have no interests attached with their areas.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, PPP’s senior leader Farhatullah Babar assessed it might take at least seven months before the coalition government will be able to proceed toward fresh elections.

The time frame, he said, he was giving was based on the time election commission has sought for preparations for the elections, adding the prevailing crisis in the country certainly required fresh polls.

The PPP leader said that in these few months, political parties will bring in the election reforms, which remains their primary challenge.

‘Sensitive subject’

Meanwhile, the spokesperson to Nawaz Sharif, Muhammad Zubair, refrained from making explicit remarks regarding PML-N supremo’s return, saying “this was a sensitive subject and could not broached at this stage”.

It is pertinent to mention that this is not the first time that whisperings about Nawaz Sharif’s return have surfaced. PML-N leaders, including Javed Latif, have made similar claims before as well.

However, with the PTI government ousted, the prospects of Nawaz Sharif’s return to home remain a subject of swirling speculations.

Nawaz Sharif looking to return to Pakistan after Eid

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has directed the Ministry of Interior for the renewal of ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif and former finance minister Ishaq Dar's passports, sources said Tuesday.

The development comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif — the younger brother of Nawaz — was sworn in as the premier following the ouster of PTI Chairman Imran Khan from office.

The sources further added that the Pakistani High Commission in London has also been directed to start work on the renewal of the passports of the PML-N leaders.

The Khan-led government had refused to renew Nawaz's passport after it expired in February last year, but then-interior minister Sheikh Rasheed had said if the PML-N supremo wanted to return, he could be issued a special certificate.

The PML-N supremo was granted an eight-week bail on medical grounds in October 2019, and a month later, he was allowed to travel abroad for treatment for four weeks — but he is still in London to date.

In 2018, an accountability court had sentenced Nawaz to seven years in prison in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference, while he was also sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison and slapped an £8 million fine (Rs1.3 billion) in the Avenfield properties reference.

Khan had repeatedly lashed out at Nawaz for going abroad for treatment, but earlier in February, he noted that letting the PML-N supremo leave Pakistan was a "major mistake" of his government.

In December last year amid escalated political activities, a debate erupted over the rumours of the PML-N supremo's possible return to Pakistan, but his party maintained that Nawaz would return after he has fully recovered.

Meanwhile, PML-N senior leader Mian Javed Latif had said a day earlier that the former prime minister was expected to return to Pakistan after Eid.

Speaking on Geo News programme "Aapas Ki Baat", PML-N senior leader Javed Latif had said that Nawaz will return to Pakistan after Eid as currently there is no pandemic in the country.

Latif had further said that after coming to Pakistan, Nawaz will face the cases against him.

“He [Nawaz Sharif] will face the courts and rule of law, but we expect neither should anyone should be treated as ladla [favourite] nor should anyone have to face brutality,” he had added.

Well I'm sure he'll be back soon and back in Pakistani politics. No better moment than the present for him.

All will be forgotten?

What a Don though lol.

Took on the army and survived.

Had cut throat political opponents like Zardari family

Survived an entire revolution where he was the biggest boogeyman and poster boy for everything that is wrong in Pakistan

Had multiple exiles

Was called a traitor.

Now just waltz his way as the supermo of Pakistan politics with his brother as the PM.

Gotta respect the fight and resolve. Obviously having billion dollars in the bank account helps but usually most of us would give up for a lot less. Respect his hustle even though don’t like him on a personal level because don’t approve of any corrupt politician.

He survives due to corruption and his allies outside Pakistan(Saudi, US, EU), he has connections in judiciary and Army , weaves influence across , I wouldn’t call that a Don but a ticking time bomb for the nation.

It’s like praising Lalu Prassad Yadav‘s ruling in Bihar.

Why would Shehbaz bring him back? It will damage his own chances?

Shehbaz Sharif after assuming charge of his office got a briefing from the diplomatic staff about the issuance of a passport to the PML-N supremo. Pakistan’s mission in London was directed to issue diplomatic passports to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and former finance minister Ishaq Dar.

However, the diplomatic staff said only Nawaz Sharif can be issued a diplomatic passport, not Ishaq Dar, on which PM Shehbaz Sharif directed to issue a normal Pakistani passport to Dar.

It may be noted that the passport of former prime minister was revoked on Feb 16, last year, who is in London in connection with his treatment.

Again, there is nothing wrong in this.

According to our laws, ex-pm of pakistan are supposed to be given diplomatic passports.

Ishaq dar cant have one yet, but if he is a minister than he can also have one.

However, i am pretty sure he can have an official passport if he is still an mna or for being an ex minister.

Official passports almost have the same powers of diplomatic passports i guess. Not the same though

Absolutely shameless stuff. There are reports that a lot of people have been arrested for campaigns against institutions and rightly so. But I am hopeful that the same treatment will be given to this loser when he returns to Pakistan.

What is wrong is that this man who refused to comeback on basis of some sort of illness is now suddenly fit to travel.

Diplomatic or ordinary is irrelevant.

Another shame filled chapter of our history will be written after Eid.

I heard Nawaz booked a flight to return after the initial vote. It was a miracle, his illnesses no longer exited.

When the vote didnt take place, his flight was cancelled, the illness returned.

Now he is fitter than Pat Cummins, will return like a brand new man.

Feel sorry for Pakistan a convincted crook who looted the nation blind is returning with an NRO.

On a positive note, he will leave us in the UK. :wg

London properties are not cheap to maintain. Coming back to loot some more?

If he didn't have a passport than how could this be true?

Why wouldnt he have a passport if he's in the UK on a visa?

A. His passport had been expired/revoked
B. Visa stays valid on an expired passport

He cant travel to pakistan on an expired or revoked visa, thus that booked flight news was fake and the list that was shown was editted.

SS too ill to go to court, evaded cases for 2 years. Broke the world record for the number of times he got Corona, and then big bhai, too ill to fly and now wants to come back. I hope these guys Rot in hell.

Saw the geo news program, where PMLN spoke person said "Now adays Pakistani doctors are doing good treatment, there is no Covid in Pakistan, so Nawaz Sharif will come back" even the Host was laughing...

I want him back because it will create the atmosphere to finish this family. Even the Generals won't be able to save them. I have a feeling that it's now or never in PKs battle against the mafia

Offcourse a diplomatic one. Just like how Imran Khan carries one as an ex pm

IK isnt an absconder But this guy is an absconder. You seem to have your analogies confused. I hope he comes back. I want IK to meet him at the airport with a million people.

I highly doubt he will be back,

SS has the limelight, why would he want NS to come and take it away from him.

Bajwa clearly hates NS and has built trust with SS, he wouldnt want to work with NS ever again.

Absolutely shameless stuff. There are reports that a lot of people have been arrested for campaigns against institutions and rightly so. But I am hopeful that the same treatment will be given to this loser when he returns to Pakistan.

Right after NCM was done reports were PTI members were being hounded. Literally in the middle of night the house of PTI Digital team was raided. I don't think they even said anything then.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Javed Latif has given a unique logic for Nawaz Sharif’s return to Pakistan, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is currently in London after getting bail on medical grounds from Pakistani courts.

According to details, Javed Latif has said that doctors have told Nawaz Sharif that doctors are providing proper treatment in Pakistan nowadays and there is no epidemic.

He said that of course doctors can treat PML-N supremo in Pakistan now and hoped that he will return to Pakistan after Eid.

On Tuesday it emerged that Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif had directed the interior ministry to issue a diplomatic passport to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Shehbaz Sharif after assuming charge of his office got a briefing from the diplomatic staff about the issuance of a passport to the PML-N supremo. Pakistan’s mission in London was directed to issue diplomatic passports to the former prime minister and former finance minister Ishaq Dar.

However, the diplomatic staff said only Elder Sharif can be issued a diplomatic passport, not Ishaq Dar, on which PM Shehbaz Sharif directed to issue a normal Pakistani passport to Dar.

Nawaz Sharif was going to comeback as some sort hero but I dare the crook to come back. If he is given bail this time the Judiciary will fall because unlike before Kaptaan doesnt have to worry about contempt and if he isnt govrn bail, then its back to jail for 9 years. And with a population already at boiling point, SS would do well to destroy all lamp posts lest it also becomes his final resting place

What if he comes back and all of a sudden imported govt hets hitched up then what will be his status I mean again in lockup SS might trick Barrey Mian Saanp this time

That would be the irony of all ironies. But as I said he ain't coming quickly because if does and the govt falls, he quod have to face the 9 years

imran will bring Pakistan to a half if Nawaz comes up.

He was furious at this choro ka tabbar during his speech in Peshawar. Absolutely seething.

If Nawaz comes back he will have to come without informing anyone. It will not be a triumphant return where supporters will put haar around him at an airport.

Yes PTI revoked his passport. But after the vote, the new imported government could have given him diplomatic passport to travel, its not difficult thing to do. The news could still be true.

The guys is a coward, theif and liar. Hopefully his health remains good now until next year when Imran returns to power. If he's in Pakistan after the result, hopefully he is arrested and never let out again.

Why did Imran Khan let him fly away in the first place?

Why did Imran Khan let him fly away in the first place?

Imo IK was thinking if he died in Pakistan, he would become some sort of martyr for some. He also didnt want to come across as being unfair esp as his wife was not well and would be in London too.

Nawaz instead of appreciating IK's compassion, decided to set up meetings with his masters planning this coup for a year.

Why did Imran Khan let him fly away in the first place?

The court asked IK/The Government to guarantee that NS would not die from his illnesses if he was not allowed to leave Pakistan for treatment.

Most of the judiciary is as corrupt as these PDM politicians.
Surely this is obvious by now?

What are you on about? How would had he gotten the passport on the same day?

It takes time

You can renew your passport in a day and also replace your passport in a day. Ive done it myself. If its a diplomatic passport it would be even quicker. You just need to visit the office, arrive early and your passport is ready by lunchtime.

You tell others they dont live in Pakistan so dont understand , yet you dont live in the UK but feel you know it all.

I'm thinking he will most likely go to jail. It will help push their narrative that the hero returned and faced all his problems.

Ofcourse he'll be out in no time as they have a gidar singhi

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) was moved on Friday to prevent the expected issuance of a diplomatic passport to PML-N supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and direct the relevant authorities to immediately arrest him upon his return to Pakistan from London.

Nawaz, who is convicted in a corruption case, has been living in London on the pretext of ill health since November 2019, when the Lahore High Court had allowed him to leave the country for four weeks for medical treatment after Shehbaz Sharif, his younger brother and the incumbent prime minister, gave an undertaking that the senior Sharif would return within the stipulated time. Later, Nawaz sought extensions to prolong his stay in London on medical grounds.

A lawyer, Advocate Naeem Haider Panjutha, filed a petition in the IHC on Thursday, referring to media reports that said Nawaz was being issued a diplomatic passport on the instructions of newly elected PM Shehbaz. He specified that the instructions for the issuance of the diplomatic passport were given to the interior and foreign affairs secretaries.

The petitioner contended that as Nawaz was "a court absconder who was convicted by learned NAB (National Accountability Bureau) Court for corruption ... it is violative of law, a mockery of the justice system and disgrace to the nation if a diplomatic passport is issued to a convict".

The "issuance of a diplomatic passport to a convict is tantamount to bestowing respect, state protocols and dignity to a convict and if the convict is a court absconder it becomes a disgrace to the entire judicial system of the country," he said, adding the act was also "against the spirit of the Constitution and against the fundamental rights whereby it has been guaranteed to every citizen that they will be treated equally".

Moreover, the petition stated, the country's courts had held that a fugitive would lose all rights a normal person was entitled to, adding that Article 25 of the Constitution had set clear standards against discrimination against citizens.

"And all the ordinary citizens will be discriminated if a convict is issued a diplomatic passport which has so many privileges and immunities, far more than the ordinary passport."

The petitioner further argued that the "illegal and unlawful" act of the interior and foreign affairs secretaries of issuing a diplomatic passport to a convict and court absconder "is not sustainable in the eyes of law".

"The honorable superior courts have held in a number of cases that public servants are not duty-bound to implement or obey the illegal directions of the superiors and whoever acts illegal just to please a superior will solely be responsible for that illegal act."

Advocate Panjutha highlighted that diplomatic passports were issued to the heads of states, highest officials and dignitaries, and that the holders of these passports enjoyed certain immunities and priviliges outlined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961.

In this connection, he also cited Passport Rules 2021, which, he said, limit the issuance of diplomatic passports to a certain class of state officials so long as they held office. Moreover, he said, according to the rules, persons entitled to get the passport are to apply for the same with the relevant authority and furnish three copies of their photographs.

"No authority other than the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will, in any circumstances, issue authorisation for diplomatic passports," the petitioner said, adding that the process for the issuance of the passport had not been followed in Nawaz's case.

The process, he said, "cannot be exempted or bypassed and ignored merely on the ground that the applicant is a brother of the prime minister".

He also pointed out that Nawaz had passed "derogatory remarks against the serving military and judicial officials" at public rallies, which caused "disgrace, disrespect, injury and insult" to the Pakistan Army and judiciary.

"It is also pertinent to mention that action is yet to be taken by the law enforcement agencies for the remarks mentioned above," he added.

Advocate Panjutha underlined that it was mandatory for all convicts to surrender before the law.

Nawaz, on the other hand, had "yet to surrender before the law", while "the federal government is hurriedly trying to issue [a] diplomatic passport to him", he claimed.

He prayed the court to prevent the issuance of a diplomatic passport to Nawaz, direct the Establishment Division secretary to arrest him immediately upon his arrival in Pakistan and produce him before a court.

"During the pendency of this petition, [a] diplomatic passport shall not be issued to" Nawaz, the petitioner requested.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah will hear the petition on April 18.

In August last year, Nawaz had filed an appeal with the British Immigration Tribunal after the Home Department refused to extend his stay in the country on “medical grounds” any further.

Nawaz can legally remain in the UK till the tribunal issues its decision on his plea for his stay in the country. His passport had expired in February 2021.

ISLAMABAD:
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) declared on Monday a petition challenging the issuance of a diplomatic passport to convicted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif as inadmissible, and imposed a fine of Rs5,000 on the petitioner.

The ruling was announced after being reserved by IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah earlier in the day.

The petitioner had earlier contended that Nawaz should not be issued a passport on the grounds that he was an "absconding convict”. “Therefore, authorities should be barred from issuing a diplomatic passport to him.”

During the hearing today, the IHC chief justice asked the petitioner's counsel what order of the federal government's was he challenging. "The court cannot give a verdict in the air," the CJ added.

“Where has the order been issued and who has issued an order that you are challenging? Why not reject your application with a penalty?” the CJ asked.

Justice Minallah further remarked that there were laws related to dealing with absconders, adding that the law must take its own course.

“There are many other issues. Why did you bring this issue unnecessarily?” the CJ inquired.

The petitioner's lawyer argued that the news was circulating in the media. "We also consider the dignity of the court," the counsel said.

“If given time, we will try to get the order from the government,” the counsel further said.

The plea was two days after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reportedly ordered for his brother be issued a diplomatic passport so he can return to Pakistan.

So IHC thinks its OK to give a diplomatic passport to a convict and then we ask why our Judiciary is amongst the worst in the world. Anyway as long as he comes back, then it won't matter. What is the wait now? Brother in power, Judiciary in their pocket, Army chief is one of them, media is controlled, so what is the wait? And [MENTION=131701]Mamoon[/MENTION] even the PK Doctors have improved according to Latif

The newly sworn in Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah said on Tuesday that a diplomatic passport was former prime minister Nawaz Sharif right and will be issued to him.

In conversation with the media after being sworn into Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s new cabinet, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) regretted that “it is unfortunate that a person who has been prime minister three times is being deprived of national citizenship.”

The minister stated that the interior ministry would be briefed on security issues and subsequently formulate a policy.

Referring to his drugs case, the minister said that an investigation will be done into the registration of the fake case.

"Everyone has the freedom to express on social media, but we have to take care of the other person’s freedom too,” he said, adding that the government would not ban social media but will regulate it.

Minister Sanaullah also told the press that former prime minister Imran Khan has been granted “foolproof security” on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

“We have no intelligence regarding a threat to Imran Khan's life,” he stated.

In response to a question about registering a case against Imran Khan, the minister said the government would not take any retaliatory action.

“The former premier will not be arrested. I am no Imran Khan that I will arrest someone or release someone," thte minister stated, adding that if there will be a case of corruption against the former premier then it will be investigated first. Any action will be decided upon later, he said.

The interior minister added that the complaints of large donations and cheques regarding the Rawalpindi Ring Road project will be investigated.

He further added that state institutions should not be maligned and their sacrifices would not be in vain. “We will support the institutions and bring reforms to all including the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)”.

A day earlier, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had declared a petition challenging the issuance of a diplomatic passport to convicted former PM Nawaz Sharif as inadmissible, and imposed a fine of Rs5,000 on the petitioner.

The ruling was announced after being reserved by IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah earlier in the day.

The petitioner had contended that Nawaz should not be issued a passport on the grounds that he was an "absconding convict”. “Therefore, authorities should be barred from issuing a diplomatic passport to him.”

Speaking about the newly appointed cabinet, he revealed that PPP had named Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for the slot of foreign minister and he will take the oath for the office after returning from London.

It is noteworthy that Latif took oath as the member of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's cabinet on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a two-member bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) is scheduled to take up a petition seeking the removal of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL). The PML-N had filed the petition in the LHC.

It may be recalled that the court had allowed Nawaz Sharif to go abroad for treatment on November 16, 2019. He departed for London on November 19, 2019, and since then, he never returned to the country.

Bilawal expected to meet Nawaz in London
The PPP chairman left for London where he is expected to meet Nawaz Sharif to "discuss the current political situation in the country."

Confirming Bilawal's departure, PPP Secretary-General Farhatullah Babar told The News that the PPP chairman is meeting Nawaz to congratulate him on the coalition government.

"The main purpose of meeting Nawaz Sharif is to congratulate him on the coalition government and discuss the current political situation," he said.

No chance. The coward planned to come back as a hero and now has to wait for the political temperature to cool but with the anger of millions, he can't take the risk of an imported govt falling and him being stuck or running off again.

LONDON: Pakistani Embassy in London on Monday has been issued a passport to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, ARY News reported.

It may be noted that the passport of the former prime minister was revoked on Feb 16, last year, who is in London in connection with his treatment.

The PML-N supremo has been issued a Pakistani passport in the normal category for 10 years. After a change of government in Pakistan, the passport of Nawaz Sharif has been renewed on the directions of PM Shehbaz Sharif.

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif had directed the interior ministry to issue a diplomatic passport to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo.

Shehbaz Sharif after assuming charge of his office got a briefing from the diplomatic staff about the issuance of a passport to the PML-N supremo.

Pakistan’s mission in London was directed to issue diplomatic passports to former prime minister and former finance minister Ishaq Dar.

However, the diplomatic staff said only Nawaz Sharif can be issued a diplomatic passport, not Ishaq Dar, on which PM Shehbaz Sharif directed to issue a normal Pakistani passport to Dar.

Nawaz likely to return after Eid ‘to face court’
Maryam successfully begins mobilisation drive

LAHORE:
A day after the issuance of a 10-year valid passport for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Federal Minister Mian Javed Latif on Tuesday disclosed that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz quaid was returning after Eid to face the courts.

“If not arrested upon arrival, Nawaz will most likely lead the rallies planned by the PML-N [to counter the PTI gatherings],” he said. “These were supposed to be led by PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz from May 6.”

Dispelling rumours about Maryam trying to flee the country, the minister said she would return if she was allowed to travel to Saudi Arabia as she had to lead the PML-N rallies.

Maryam began her mobilisation drive from Tuesday, holding a party workers’ meeting in NA 128, Lahore which is MNA Sheikh Rohail Ashgar’s constituency.

She was accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister-elect Hamza Shehbaz.

Maryam will hold her next party workers’ meeting in MPA Saiful Malook’s constituency.

On the sidelines, the PML-N VP has also sought permission from court to fly abroad, which led to speculations regarding her return.

On the matter, Minister Latif said if Maryam was not allowed to travel, she would continue holding as many constituency wise meetings as possible before and post Eid.

Laying out the schedule of rallies, the PML-N MNA said the first rally was scheduled for May 6 in Attock, second for May 8 in Okara, then two in K-P before one on May 15 in Vehari.

He added that from there onwards, there would be rallies in Mianwali, Chakwal, Rahim Yar Khan before proceeding to Sindh, where so far a rally had been planned in Karachi.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Latif said the schedule was slightly different when it was issued earlier, adding that somewhere towards the last leg of these rallies, the part would begin preparations to welcome PML-N Quaid Nawaz.

The minister said the date of Nawaz’s return had not been finalised, but he would return next month.

“The party has planned a series of activities post Mian sb’s return,” he said. “If he is not arrested upon arrival, then Nawaz will lead the activities but if otherwise, then the activities will be put on hold.”

This was not the first time that whisperings about Nawaz’s return had surfaced. The PML-N leaders, including Latif, had made similar claims before as well.

Lack of security for Nawaz Sharif in London

Let's be honest the videos are outrageous. With protestors and the general public on several occasions coming within touching distance of the Ex-PM. Chairs being thrown at his sons, constant pushing and shoving of his companions. Also without mention being required the constant sloganeering and protesting outside his residence.

Surely in a developed country like the UK, you would expect proper security being given to our 3 time EX-PM. Has the UK failed to provide adequate security to Sharif or is the general public becoming too rowdy nowadays?

You mean a criminal on the run. Why is he in the UK and not in prison in PK? Why is his guarantor become PM?

A "big decision" is on the cards as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be meeting his elder brother and PML-N supremo in London, Geo News reported Tuesday.

Senior PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi -- who is already in London -- confirmed the visit, with sources saying that PM Shehbaz will likely leave for the visit tonight.

Ex-prime minister Abbasi said that PM Shehbaz and other party leaders had requested Nawaz to call a consultative meeting, but did not specify when the recently-elected premier would be reaching the English capital.

But in contradiction to Abbasi's statement, sources said PML-N supremo Nawaz had summoned an urgent meeting of the party's leadership in London.

According to the sources, Nawaz has to consult the party leadership over some important issues he has reservations over and the PML-N is expected to make a "big decision", which is why he rejected the proposal to have an online meeting.

The party sources further reported that during the meeting, a discussion regarding the strategy on the prices of petroleum products will be held with Nawaz and former finance minister Ishaq Dar.

The discussion holds special importance as a delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to begin talks with Pakistani officials on May 18 in Doha.

Moreover, decisions regarding power-sharing, the next general election, and the Punjab cabinet will also be taken during the meeting.

A man ineligible to participate in politics is navigating the politics of the country. This is a circus and we are all clowns.

Nooras don't want an election but fear the disaster of this govt and the economic situation may get worse and give IK a 2/3 majority if they don't hold an election soon.

Former federal minister and Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid has taken a swipe at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, saying that how could he serve the nation when could not even bring his brother — Nawaz Sharif —back to Pakistan from London in three years.

In November 2019, convicted former premier Nawaz had left the country after he signed a court-approved undertaking, saying that he would return to the country within four weeks. Shehbaz too had signed an undertaking, that stated he would "ensure the return" of his brother "within four weeks or on certification by doctors that he has regained his health and is fit to return back to Pakistan".

In a statement on Monday, the close confidante of PTI Chief Imran Khan said the coalition government led by PML-N could fall anytime as it has a razor-thin majority of only “one vote”.

The time will come soon when the president will ask them for a vote of confidence “which will shatter their imperialist plans,” he added.

Rashid said the government with one vote majority did not have any authority to represent 220 million people of the country.

Referring to coalition partners — PM Shehbaz, Asif Zardari and Maulana Fazlur Rehman – the ex-interior minister said the “three political rats” gave their offspring’s ministries while the poor were dying of load-shedding, inflation and unemployment.

Rashid said Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah was “hired” to suppress the opponents with torture and intimidation.

He added that as the government will further increase the prices of fuel and electricity next month, “people will come to the streets themselves and break the chains of slavery.”

While commenting on recently amended electoral and NAB bills, the former federal minister said that depriving 10 million overseas Pakistanis of their voting right is “national dishonesty because the Supreme Court has already ruled on this matter in 2018”.

“I am going to the Supreme Court to give the right to vote to overseas Pakistanis. Overseas Pakistanis are the only ones who can save democracy from any disaster while the lawmakers are being sold for Rs20 to Rs25 million.”

As the new COVID variant in the United Kingdom (UK) emerged, doctors warned PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif against travelling, Geo News reported Tuesday, citing sources.

Former prime minister Imran Khan’s government had refused to renew Nawaz's passport after it expired in February last year but then interior minister Sheikh Rasheed had said if the PML-N supremo wanted to return, he could be issued a special certificate.

However, the incumbent government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had issued on April 25 a new passport to the PML-N leader.

Following the issuance of a new passport to Nawaz, it was expected that he would return to the country.

According to the source, chances of Nawaz Sharif's repatriation have ended after doctors directed him to avoid travelling till he completes treatment.

“Doctors have advised [the] PML-N supremo to avoid travelling after a new variant of COVID emerged in the UK,” said the source.

Many European countries, including Germany and Portugal, have seen a rapid surge in the Omicron sub-variant BA.5 cases.

Due to the COVID sub-variant, 27,000 cases and 47 deaths were reported in Portugal on Wednesday.

In April, while speaking on Geo News programme Aapas Ki Baat, PML-N senior leader Javed Latif had said that Nawaz will return to Pakistan after Eid as currently there is no pandemic in the country.

Latif further said that after coming to Pakistan, Nawaz will face the cases against him.

“He [Nawaz Sharif] will face the courts and rule of law, but we expect neither should anyone should be treated as ladla [favourite] nor should anyone have to face brutality,” he added.

The PML-N supremo left for London in November 2019 following his illness as then Prime Minister Imran Khan had permitted him to go abroad for medical treatment.

Subsequently, in 2019, the Lahore High Court after suspending his sentence, allowed Nawaz to go abroad for medical treatment.

ISLAMABAD: If former prime minister Nawaz Sharif does not secure transit bail while coming back to Pakistan, he can be arrested, Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar said Tuesday.

In 2020, Islamabad High Court’s Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani issued non-bailable arrest warrants for the PML-N supremo after he failed to return to Pakistan following the expiry of his bail.

The Lahore High Court (LHC), in November 2019, allowed Nawaz to go abroad for medical treatment and in the same month, he left for London — where he resides to date. His party has reiterated that his return is conditional upon the doctor’s approval.

Time and again, there have been rumours of the former prime minister’s return to Pakistan, but the speculations increased after the formation of the coalition government in April — as PML-N is the major player in the coalition.

In his press conference today, Tarar — a member of Nawaz’s PML-N — said that if the party supremo receives transit bail, then he cannot be arrested upon arrival in Pakistan.

The law minister said if Nawaz fails to secure transit bail, then he will have to surrender himself and the “courts should provide [relief] to the people who are handing themselves over to the law voluntarily".

Tarar added that ex-premier Benazir Bhutto also secured transit bail when she came back to Pakistan.

Speaking about former military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s return to the country, Tarar said that the law will take its course and "he will be facilitated in line with the rules and regulations".

Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar has said that the military leadership’s stance is that Musharraf should return, while top PML-N leaders, including Nawaz, have stated that no hurdles should be put in the way if the ex-president wishes to return.

PML-N seeks NRO-style remedy to enable Nawaz’s return
Federal Minister Javed Latif says 'the powers that be' should now step in and 'right the wrong'

LAHORE:
Federal Minister Javed Latif has lamented that the incumbent government has so far failed in attempts to bring any legislation to do away with conviction and cases instituted to “victimise” party's supreme leader Nawaz Sharif, pointing out that the latter’s return faced legal impediments which needed an NRO-style legal remedy.

The PML-N leader told The Express Tribune on Saturday that Nawaz Sharif wanted to head back to the country at the earliest but regretted that despite having his own government in place, he was still “neck-deep sunk” in cases and potentially faced incarceration on return.

He stressed that the coalition government should take up the matter collectively as it was not a problem specific to PML-N only and suggested a legislative remedy was needed to bin all the “forged cases” against Nawaz similar to the one carried out in 2007.

He further emphasised said that the powers that be “who have used such cases for arm-twisting”, should now step in and right the wrong.

When asked if such NRO-style legislation – amnesty granted by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf – will be brought into the assembly to give a blanket relief to Nawaz Sharif, the PML-N leader revealed that he has raised the concern in the house, adding it should be tabled and brought into being.

Asked what was stopping the government from bringing such legislation to the National Assembly despite the fact the government had virtually no opposition to confront, Latif emphasised that there was a need for collective decision-making on the matter.

Meanwhile, former advocate general of Punjab, Ahmad Awais, alleged that the PML-N has already made attempts to grant NRO to Nawaz Sharif and other political leaders via NAB law amendments, which were challenged before the Supreme Court.

He said any legislation brought with “nefarious designs” can be challenged in court.
The National Reconciliation Ordinance was brought in 2007 to provide blanket immunity on cases instituted against bigwigs of the country including Nawaz Sharif.

It is pertinent to mention here that convict Nawaz Sharif, who was in London for treatment since 2019, is yet to complete his ten years of prison terms on his return and other than that he was reportedly declared absconder in other cases.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has demanded that all cases pertaining to Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) should be heard by full benches of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, ARY News reported.

Talking to media representatives outside the Supreme Court (SC) Rana said that there are judges in the bench that convicted their party leader Nawaz Sharif, all PML-N cases should be heard by larger benches of the SC.

He added that yesterday’s CM election in the Punjab Assembly proved that there was no horse-trading involved, not a single MPA was bought or sold. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) claims about Rs400-500 million being offered for MPA proved to be hokum, he added.

The Interior Minister added that PTI supporters trespassed the Supreme Court registry last night and caused mayhem. Rather than taking any action against the PTI goons, the registry accepted their application, Rana added.

Rana Sanaullah demanded the ECP announce the PTI foreign funding case’s verdict as soon as possible. It has been proven that PTI was involved in foreign funding, why is its verdict not being announced? he questioned.

The parameters for justice should be the same for everyone, SC’s full bench should hear PML-N-related cases, the PML-N leader demanded.

Senior leadership of the PML-N has advised party supremo Nawaz Sharif to return to Pakistan to take control of the matters as the party faced a blowback after losing control of Punjab province to rival PTI, ARY NEWS reported.

According to sources having knowledge of discussions within the party, the senior PML-N leadership have made contact with Nawaz Sharif and mulled over ways to restore the standing of the party in the country, especially in Punjab province.

“The senior leaders advised Nawaz Sharif to return to Pakistan and lead the party,” they said, adding the meeting reached a consensus that the party lost in by-polls owing to worst economic conditions and inflation.

Moreover, the performance of the PML-N federal ministers was also reviewed during the meeting and Nawaz Sharif directed the leadership to stay connected to party leaders and activists.

Recently during a meeting of the PDM, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif lambasted Finance Minister Miftah Ismail due to the ongoing economic turmoil in the country.

The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) meeting was held on July 28.

According to sources, the PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif took to Miftah Ismail over the Dollar hike since the PML-N-led government took charge. Miftah had claimed that the Dollar would rise only Rs 23, but apparently, Rs 23 and Rs 55 are the same to him, Nawaz Sharif said.

Sources say that the three-time Premier asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to summon a meeting of all ally parties.

The Finance Minister should take all allies into confidence regarding the deteriorating economic conditions, he added. The PML-N leader said that if they have to govern then they will have to be brave.

NS pretending that he and the imported crooks that rule PK are 2 different people. This duffer with his thick daughter couldn't run a sweet shop never mind PK. In his last term, he spent a year on holiday. It got so bad that he would turn up to the opening up of an envelope in places like Azerbaijan just to get out of PK.

Amid swirling speculations about PML-N’s supreme leader Nawaz Sharif's homecoming, a majority of the party’s parliamentarians wants him to return to the country to save his rudderless party which was sailing through pretty turbulent waters, a well-placed party leader said.

A party parliamentarian speaking on the condition of anonymity said they were aware of the media reports about the elder Sharif’s possible return. However, there was no confirmed development in this regard internally.

He said that the matter of his return was now beyond his and his family’s wishes, stressing it had become a necessity for the party supremo to save his party. “He should and must return at the earliest,” he emphasised.

The parliamentarian of the embattled party reckoned that Nawaz Sharif will have to overcome his fears of potential hardships that await him upon his return for the sake of his party’s future. “Cases should not stop Nawaz Sharif from returning now especially knowing that party is currently passing through testing times.”

He noted that the concerns expressed by Federal Minister Mian Javeed Latif over the party not doing enough to get Nawaz Sharif absolved from the politically motivated cases were legitimate. He admitted that indeed the party has not been able to make any considerable progress in the last few months.

“This state of a lull in the given matter is not justifiable no matter what the hiccups were,” the party leader feared.

Need for a fresh narrative

The PML-N leader went on to point out that the party was in dire need of a new narrative to appease its voters, saying that the overused narrative of ‘vote to izzat do (respect the ballot) had died down. The party does not have any narrative now, he added.

He said the party leadership should hold meetings to come up with a “sellable narrative” at par with PTI’s popular rhetoric.

He revealed that there was a debate within the party that if the party had not accepted to offer a compromise on government, the ‘vote to izzat do’ narrative would have pummelled PTI in general elections.

“By forming a government, PML-N breathed life into PTI's deflating popularity. It was us who washed all PTI’s sins and shouldered all their mistakes,” he said.

“However, what was done was done, now it was important for the party to get to grips with the ground reality and develop a practical narrative. A new narrative can be mainstreamed in about a month.”

He said that from how PTI’s protesting workers were mistreated, to what unfolded in the provincial assembly during their tenure, is not politics. "Politics is not about unabashedly hanging on to power. Every political party instead of doing politics, of late, is looking toward 'gate number four'," he stated in a tacit reference to the establishment.

"Every political party wants to be in their good books and have their backing. He said that thus far they do not know of any commitment which was not met from the ‘other end’ from which they can deduce that they were double-crossed."

When asked if party leadership in London was satisfied with Finance Minister’s performance, he said that he does not have any direct acknowledgement of that “but if I were them I would not be satisfied”.

Another senior party leader taken to be close to Sharif's family not only refused to answer the question of Nawaz Sharif’s return but also said that asking him the question of his return was akin to making fun of the party’s inabilities and failures.

It is pertinent to mention here that there were rumours of Nawaz Sharif's return to Pakistan soon, and these rumours were being aired by people from within the party. But these rumours were nothing new, as many leaders have in different times speculated about his return.

The Pakistan Mus*lim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government is considering relevant legislation to ease the return of its supreme leader Nawaz Sharif, who is in a self-imposed exile in London on medical grounds, to Pakistan.

PML-N leader and interior minister Rana Sanaullah has already said the coalition government might make certain amendments that would help repeal the ban imposed on Mr Sharif by a Supreme Court judgement in the Panama Papers case against him.

“The parliament can undo the lifetime ban on politicians and it may not be struck down by the court,” an insider told Dawn.

“Nawaz Sharif will be the ultimate beneficiary if this legislation is brought to parliament and subsequently adopted,” the insider said, adding that the introduction of this legislation would be linked to the outcome of the Supreme Court Bar Association’s petition in the apex court challenging lifetime ban on politicians.

Earlier, PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz had hinted that her father wanted to come back but there were ‘certain problems’ hindering his return. She was referring to legal problems as Nawaz Sharif will have to go to jail on his return in the Al Azizia corruption reference. Besides, she had also referred to not getting a ‘green light’ from the powerful circles for his return.

Sanaullah says party supremo will spearhead election campaign

After Shehbaz Sharif managed to become the premier in April last, some PML-N leaders were excited hoping that their supreme leader would now be among them soon.

But legal hiccups are said to be the main hurdles in his return plans.

Nawaz vs Imran

Nawaz Sharif will likely make his return to Pakistan ahead of the general elections as PML-N leaders think his presence in the field is necessary to stop Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) juggernaut.

In the face of the rising popularity of the PTI chairman who was ousted as the prime minister in April this year, the entire PML-N leadership is unanimous that the party needs Nawaz to be in Pakistan ahead of the polls if it wants to score a victory.

“Embarrassing defeat in the last month’s by-polls in Punjab has consolidated this view within the party that second-tier leadership like Maryam Nawaz and [PM] Shehbaz Sharif cannot compete with Mr Khan’s charisma,” an insider told Dawn.

Despite an aggressive campaign by Ms Nawaz, the PML-N faced a crushing defeat in the by-polls held on July 22 that cost Punjab to the Sharifs. “Only Nawaz can handle Imran Khan in the political field as per the PML-N senior leadership,” the insider added.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah dismissed rumours about the immediate return of the elder Sharif. He, however, confirmed that Mr Sharif return ahead of the next general elections to spearhead the party’s campaign.

“There has been a talk in the party about the return of Nawaz Sharif. He is likely to return to Pakistan ahead of the next elections whenever they take place to spearhead the PML-N’s campaign,” Sanaullah said on a private TV channel.

Mr Sanaullah was referring to the claims made by PML-N leader Javid Latif who had claimed that Nawaz Sharif was thinking of coming back to Pakistan in mid-September.

Mr Latif has been passionately appealing to his party chief to come back before it is too late to counter Imran Khan.

Nawaz in London

An ‘ailing’ Nawaz Sharif has been living in London since November 2019 for medical treatment after the high court allowed him a four-week reprieve. He was serving seven-year imprisonment in the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore in the Al-Azizia corruption case before his departure to London on medical grounds.

Prior to his exit, his younger brother Shehbaz had submitted an undertaking to the Lahore High Court ensuring his elder brother would return “within four weeks or on certification by doctors that he has regained his health and is fit to return back to Pakistan”. However, the return is repeatedly delayed due to health concerns.

Nawaz Sharif’s passport expired in February 2021. However, the junior Sharif’s government issued a fresh passport to the elder Sharif in April this year.

It may be mentioned here that in August last year, Nawaz Sharif filed an appeal with the British Immigration Tribunal after the Home Department refused to extend his stay in the country on “medical grounds” any further. Mr Sharif can legally remain in the UK till the tribunal issues its decision on his plea for his stay in the country.
