The return of Nawaz Sharif

Its a miracle!

The bloke is deluded, not a chance in hell he will be elected by the people. I think IK may be right, they want to make a deal both Nawaz and IK are disqualified, sure this will mean the whole country in some sort of blockade or civil war.

IK should say do your best. Let the mafia disqualify him but no deal in any circumstance because they will sign their own death warrants.

Federal minister Javed Latif on Monday claimed that PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif — who is in a self-imposed exile in London on medical grounds — would return to the country in September.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Latif said a "level playing field" in Pakistani politics was impossible without Nawaz's presence. He said the people had expressed their opinion and now wished for Nawaz's return.

Latif said the PML-N would not allow the party chief to go back to jail upon his return, explaining that the party felt "injustice" was committed against it. He alleged that Nawaz was disqualified on the instructions and directions of former chief justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar.

Latif criticised PTI Chairman Imran Khan, and questioned whether those who had "removed" Nawaz and facilitated Imran's rise to power had still not learned their lesson.

"Some people are still pulling his (Imran) strings today. We know everything."

Latif alleged that Imran still had the support of "a few people", adding that he would not have come to Banigala otherwise and would have instead stayed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

"He came to Banigala after 15 days when he got cover."

Responding to a question, the federal minister said the PML-N did not want friendship or enmity with those who "made governments and broke governments" and the party had a clear stance that it wanted all institutions, including politicians, to operate within their legal and constitutional limits.

Counting on parliament

The PML-N government is considering relevant legislation to ease Nawaz's return.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had already said the coalition government might make certain amendments that would help repeal the ban imposed on Nawaz by a Supreme Court judgement in the Panama Papers case against him.

Nawaz will likely make his return to Pakistan ahead of the general elections as PML-N leaders think his presence in the field is necessary to stop the PTI juggernaut.

In the face of the rising popularity of the PTI chairman who was ousted as the prime minister in April this year, the entire PML-N leadership is unanimous that the party needs Nawaz to be in Pakistan ahead of the polls if it wants to score a victory.

“Embarrassing defeat in last month’s by-polls in Punjab has consolidated this view within the party that second-tier leadership like Maryam Nawaz and [Prime Minister] Shehbaz Sharif cannot compete with Mr Khan’s charisma,” an insider had told Dawn.

Nawaz has been living in London since November 2019 for medical treatment after the Lahore High Court (LHC) allowed him a four-week reprieve. He was serving seven-year imprisonment in the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore in the Al-Azizia corruption case before his departure to London on medical grounds.

Prior to his exit, Shehbaz had submitted an undertaking to the LHC ensuring his elder brother would return “within four weeks or on certification by doctors that he has regained his health and is fit to return back to Pakistan”. However, the return is repeatedly delayed due to health concerns.

Nawaz’s passport expired in February 2021. However, the junior Sharif’s government issued a fresh passport to the elder Sharif in April this year.

Great to hear the news of Nawaz Sharif's return. The only competent leader Pakistan has ever had in it's history.

Great to hear the news of Nawaz Sharif's return. The only competent leader Pakistan has ever had in it's history.

Is he also the first proclaimed offender and leader of a political party?

Our great leader and Ameer-ul-Momineen is coming back to the land of the pure to save our great nation! He tried his best governing from London via zoom, but cut him some slack it’s just not as effective as brung there in person. Anyone know if he booked his flights?

He is being deported from the UK as his appeal for staying on the basis of political victimisation has been quashed.

Now his low life party of chor and traitors are wasting public funds on press conferences to lie and make it appear as if he is returning to Pakistan in September out of his own free will.

He will have to return to Pak unless the Saudi's take him in. Sometimes in life we have no choice then have to make circumstances sound good. His day of reckoning will arrive, insha Allah.

Despite claims that Nawaz Sharif was returning to the country next month, party leaders have denied that the PML-N supremo was appearing on the political firmament anytime soon, while some suggested it could be a mere 'red herring' to counter PTI's rising popularity.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, two party leaders revealed to The Express Tribune that there was no definitive decision regarding Nawaz Sharif’s return to Pakistan. They admitted that there was a consensus among party leaders that he should return at the earliest but beyond this, there was no word as to when.

Both party leaders said that the party has neither officially confirmed nor denied the said claim, but that alone does not lend this speculation any credence.

A red herring?

One of the party leaders, who hails from central Punjab, pointed out that there was a possible advantage of making this claim at this juncture as it sways public attention from PTI’s rising popularity to Nawaz's return and serves as a boost to the flagging morale of the party workers.

However, he noted that it also works as a double-edged sword as this debate also brings to fore the subject of his controversial stay in London, where he was currently residing for his treatment since 2019.

The other leader said that the party supremo may return in September but that was "hope of a party worker, not a decision".

He said that no decision regarding the elder Sharif’s return has been communicated to the party, adding that his homecoming depends on a set of factors, including his health, assurance of being given a level playing field and another guarantee that the 'word' will be kept and honoured.

He said that the party can get all legal matters sorted out, but those remedies might be undone soon after his return, which may land him in neck-deep trouble.

He said that there was a consensus in the party that Nawaz should return for lifting the party’s fortunes. Without his return the party might not be able to reinvigorate its workers, and pay a heavy price in elections, he added. He said that hopefully Nawaz Sharif would return in time, and see the party through these difficult times.

Sharif family spokesperson, whom The Express Tribune had talked to very recently, had said that there was no decision regarding Nawaz Sharif’s return. He said whenever that decision will be taken it will be made public by the party spokesperson, not by any singular leader.

MNA Waheed Alam Khan said there was no decision regarding Nawaz Sharif's return, at least not to his knowledge. He said Nawaz will return to the country soon, that is as far they know.

Senior politician MNA Syed Javeed Hussain said that he was not in the know of any plan regarding Nawaz Sharif’s return.

He said that the party will make it public when this will be decided. Regarding his statement, he said that this was Javed Latif's personal views and do not reflect the party’s decision-making. He said that it was indeed better to wait for things to be decided before being announced.

PML-N MNA Mian Nawaz Latif, a day earlier on Monday, held a press conference, alongside party Punjab spokesperson Azma Bukhari, to claim that Mian Nawaz Sharif was returning to Pakistan in September. Mian Javeed Latif had made similar claims several times in the past as well, and the party distanced itself from his statement every time.

Mian Javeed Latif told The Express Tribune that the decision has indeed been taken but the date has not been finalised. Asked about misfires before, he said that Nawaz Sharif has indeed been ready since last year to return, but couldn’t due to a wide range of factors. But now things were different. He refused to answer the question of party leaders disowning his statement.

Party’s spokesperson and Federal Minister for Information Marrium Aurangzeb did not respond to the queries that this correspondent dropped, requesting her to either confirm or deny Mian Javeed Latif's claim. Other known party leaders refused to talk on this subject.

He has been told by close aids" mian sahib if you go and fail how will you come back?"

He's a coward and will find a way to go somewhere else. He can easily buy his way to another country. If he comes back two man and his dog won't come to see him. He's gonna realise what a disaster awaits him. His party is finished. He has no clue.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s appeal at the UK Immigration Tribunal has not been heard for over a year since the former premier’s plea for an extension of stay was refused by the UK Home Office.

Credible sources in the UK government have shared with The News and Geo that Mr Sharif’s appeal has yet not been heard at the First Tier Tribunal due to several factors, such as the Home Office seeking an extension of time to file its response to the representations made by Mr Sharif’s lawyers.

Last August, the Home Office turned down Nawaz Sharif’s application for a stay but gave him an in-country right of appeal against the Home Office decision. This meant that Mr Sharif was not required to leave the UK until he had exhausted all his appeal rights in the UK. Soon after the Nawaz lawyers appealed in August last year, the said appeal is still outstanding in the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) and is yet to be heard before the FTT Judge.

On Pakistani social media, a piece of news circulated on Tuesday 16 August 2022 that Nawaz Sharif has been asked by the UK government to leave by the 25th of September 2022 but the UK government sources have said that this was a piece of fake news as Nawaz Sharif’s appeal has several stages to go through before a final decision is made. The UK government source said that Sharif’s appeal has not yet been heard by the First Tribunal on the merits of the case.

On 18 February this year, a case management hearing took place at the First Tier Tribunal where Nawaz Sharif was represented by his lawyers. There was no need for Mr Nawaz to attend the case management hearing and that is where a schedule was agreed upon for all parties to file their bundles for the case to progress. It’s understood that a hearing is scheduled to take place soon. Barrister Ghulam Mustafa, who is working as a senior immigration lawyer and head of the Immigration Department at a London-based law firm, Law Lane Solicitors, explained the whole process and said that Nawaz Sharif’s appeal process has a long way to go as this is the first stage of the appeal and if Nawaz Sharif’s appeal is not allowed at this stage, this will not mean that it is the end of his appeal rights in the UK.

Mr Ghulam Mustafa added: “Once the FTT hears the case, the judge will deliver his verdict normally within a few weeks, and in rare cases, the decisions have been witnessed to have been promulgated by the Honourable Judges after a few months from the date of the actual hearing. However, delays have occurred in the FTT hearings and decisions mainly due to the COvid-19.”

Mr Mustafa explained that if Mr Sharif’s appeal is upheld, in favour of the Home Office and/or overturned in favour of the appellant at this stage, both the parties will have a right to apply for permission to appeal to the Upper Tribunal within 14 days from the date of the decision of the FTT, and this permission needs to be sought from the FTT itself at the first stage. This application is based on any error of law of the FTT Judge’s decision to dismiss the appeal.

He explained: “If the FTT refuses permission, either aggrieved party will be able to take another bite to the cherry in that by way of making a further application for permission to appeal to the Upper Tribunal (UT) directly within 14 days of the decision based on an error of law. If the Upper Tribunal Judge accepts that there was an error of law committed by the FTT judge, in that scenario he may order and remit the case to FTT for a fresh hearing before a different judge of the FTT. If the UT Judge finds no error of law, the matter is then certified by the Judge and hence all appeal rights are exhausted by the party challenging the decision.”

“However, if the UT Judge does not certify the decision but in any event refuses permission, then the aggrieved party may challenge the decision to the next stage in the Court of Appeal by seeking permission to appeal in the said court. Needless to mention here that the High Court is excluded in this process as this is also known as a leapfrog rule.”

Barrister Ghulam Mustafa said that since Mr Sharif is at the initial stage of the appeal process, it may take at least over a year before the matter takes finality. “Thus all about his return news to Pakistan seems speculative in nature.”

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in London three years ago in November 2019 in an air ambulance to seek medical treatment for multiple diseases after he was allowed to leave Pakistan by the Pakistani Courts. He was accompanied by his brother Shehbaz Sharif and a personal physician as he was taken to his London residence at Avenfield apartments. Nawaz Sharif had arrived in London for a few weeks only and he has been getting regular medical check-ups at the Harley Street clinic. He decided not to return to Pakistan and delivered speeches to party workers from London and has been conducting party affairs ever since from here.

There are reports that the PMLN wants him to lead the next elections, but he has not finalised his plan to return to Pakistan. In a recent speech, the former premier Imran Khan speculated that the current government led by Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) plans to bring Nawaz back to Pakistan soon.

A mass-contact campaign was the need of the hour for the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the present situation but to reinvigorate the party’s support base, Nawaz Sharif would have to lead from the front, a senior PML-N leader said on Monday.

Talking to The Express Tribune, the PML-N office-bearer said that Maryam Nawaz was indeed very popular in the party's support base but still she was no match for PML-N Quaid Nawaz, who had thrice led the party to form the government.

He said that Nawaz would return to the country “very soon” but could not give a “definite date”. He recalled that Nawaz had returned before (after spending several years in exile in Saudi Arabia), knowing that he could be sent behind bars. This time again, he would return, he hoped.

To a question, he admitted that neither there were any plans in the pipeline for a mass-contact drive, nor were there any party preparations for Nawaz’s return at any level. However, he added that both the tasks, if the party wanted, could be accomplished within a very short span of time.

The PML-N leader stressed the need for the party to start working on building its narrative as soon as possible. Before entering the canvassing stage, he said, the party needed to have a workable narrative. “Narrative-building is not a difficult task,” he added.

“Despite the fact that odds are stacked against us, the PML-N can make an easy comeback by turning the economy around. A few positive developments will change the perception 180 degrees,” he said. On the economic front, he said, the party hoped the government would stabilise the economy with foreign loans.

Other PML-N leaders have also talked about the need for chalking out a new narrative to win voters. Several PML-N lawmakers whom The Express Tribune spoke to in the last six days were unaware of Nawaz’s return.

PML-N supremo and former premier Nawaz Sharif's grip on his party has begun to weaken.

The leaders of his own party have started criticising Nawaz’s continuous stay in London for three years and giving instructions from abroad on the country’s economic policies.

Nawaz and his daughter, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, have taken a temporary break from politics, leaving the party to fend for itself.

However, in a tweet on Thursday, the PML-N supremo reiterated his support to his younger brother in handling the crises in the country.

“The negative comments attributed to me about PM Shahbaz Sharif are misleading and incorrect. I remain hopeful that the sincere and tireless efforts by SS under the most challenging circumstances will bear fruit and he will steer the country out of the mess created by Imran Khan.”

In the current situation, the decision of Nawaz’s immediate return to the country has also been postponed.

According to insiders, Nawaz had disagreed with not only his own party but also the leaders of the multi-party alliance – the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) – and its allies over various issues including not holding immediate general elections and the spiralling inflation.

However, instead of expressing it, he prioritised the collective wisdom of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, PPP Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari and PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman over his own opinion and discussed matters according to the situation – the new slogan of “save the state not politics”.

However, time has proven that if Nawaz’s opinion and suggestions were implemented, a stronger government of the PDM and its allies would have been established in the country today as a result of the general elections.

The only party standing against them, the PTI, would have died a political death.

The incumbent government, despite having an experienced team, has adopted policies that are anti-people. It has already pushed the people further into poverty, inflation and unemployment.

The current government is expected to bombard the people with more inflationary measures.

It has played a role in bringing its rival party, the PTI, to the pinnacle of its popularity.

Nawaz is extremely upset, and he used to express his disappointment in party meetings from time to time.

However, an incident happened 10 days ago which was probably unbelievable and unacceptable for Nawaz, former finance minister Ishaq Dar and Maryam.

According to insiders, an important meeting was held on August 15 under the chairmanship of Nawaz Sharif through video link in which PM Shehbaz, former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Maryam, Dar, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail and other senior leaders of the PML-N participated.

In this meeting, a decision was to be taken to change the prices of petroleum products and the government had been pressuring the media for several days that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) had prepared a summary of reducing the price of petrol by Rs25 per litre and diesel by Rs15.

It should be noted that this was the same meeting about which Maryam had tweeted that her father left the meeting when the decision was taken to increase the prices of petroleum products.

According to party sources, during this meeting, Nawaz had asked Miftah to give a briefing on the economic situation. The finance minister strongly suggested increasing the prices of petroleum products. On this, Nawaz gave the microphone to Dar.

Dar criticised Miftah's economic policies and his methods. Abbasi intervened and allegedly scolded Dar.

He told him that governing in the current situation and making tough financial decisions was not an easy task.

“If you think that we and our government are not doing a good job, then why you ‘gentlemen’, who have been sitting in London for so long, return to Pakistan and take charge of the country and the economy,” he added.

On this, Nawaz allegedly hit the table in anger and left the meeting, after which the government issued a notification to increase the prices of petroleum products.

After midnight, Maryam wrote on Twitter that her father had strongly opposed this decision and even said that he could not put a single penny more burden on the public.

She further quoted Nawaz as saying that if there was any compulsion from the government, he was not involved in this decision.

According to party sources, Nawaz had left the meeting not because of the government’s desire to increase the prices of petroleum products, but because of Abbasi’s “angry” tone.

Since this meeting, Nawaz and Maryam have left the government to its current situation.

By-elections are to be held in different districts of the country including Punjab on September 11 and 25.

The responsibility of the campaign for the by-polls of a National Assembly and three constituencies of the provincial assembly to be held on September 11 in Punjab was given to Maryam, but it has not been started yet.

It seems that Maryam is angry with the government. Her decision to set up a separate office in the party secretariat in Model Town has also been delayed.

In the past days, work on the renovation of Maryam’s office was under way at a rapid pace, but now this has almost stopped.

According to party sources, Nawaz has been silent since the party meeting held 10 days ago and postponed his immediate return home, which was possible in the last week of September or early October.

Now Nawaz has decided that if Dar acquired relief from the Supreme Court, then the former finance minister would first return to the country. After a complete review of the situation in Pakistan, he would inform Nawaz about it.

Only then would the PML-N supremo decide about his return to the country.

According to party sources, Nawaz, through his most trusted party officials, has called for the performance reports of all the members of parliament and party officials, based on which he could make important decisions in the near future.

They include giving the most important and powerful post in the PML-N to Maryam.

This is to ensure that she could keep the PML-N decisions and policies in her hands by strengthening her grip on the party.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry has denied reports of ‘behind-the-scenes’ connections between former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan, saying that the news circulating on social media had nothing to do with reality.

The former information minister said in a statement on Sunday that the position of PTI Chairman Imran regarding the country's political situation is very unambiguous and categorical. “No group or elite has the right to make decisions about the country's future… this will be decided by the people.”

He said that without the official announcement of the date of general elections, the party will not become part of any secret or announced negotiation process. “Instead of crafting fabricated news stories, the date of the elections should be seriously considered and announced,” he advised without naming any group or political party.

Fawad Chaudhry further said that there were no behind-the-scenes contact or meetings taking place with PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif or any of his representatives and there was no need for it. “All such reports are just speculations which have nothing to do with reality,” he maintained.

On Saturday, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb and Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman lambasted the PTI chief, saying that he was busy keeping his narrative alive instead of saving and feeding the flood victims across the country.

Marriyum said that half of the nation is submerged under the water while the former prime minister is trapped under his ego. She said that Imran indulged in his “false politics” to avoid corruption cases.

Pakistan is currently reeling through heavy floods. In the past few weeks, record monsoon rains and flash floods killed more than 1,200 people and injured over 6,000 others. Nearly 400 children are among those who died of the calamity. Moreover, 33 million people have been rendered homeless.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has finalised the strategy to ensure the safe return of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to Pakistan, ARY News reported, citing sources.

After the return of Ishaq Dar from London to Pakistan, the PML-N’s legal team has finalized the arrangements to ensure the safe return of the former premier.

Sources say the PML-N legal team will move the court for bail before the arrest of Nawaz Sharif and after confirmation of bail, he will appear before the court for permanent bail.

It has been learnt that Nawaz Sharif will return to the country before General Elections in Pakistan.

Last week, the PML-N supremo moved accountability court for relief in corruption cases under NAB Amendments Ordinance 2022.

Earlier, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid Nawaz Sharif will return to Pakistan soon and he will decide on returning home by himself.

The interior minister visited Pakistan Consulate in Jeddah where he met the Pakistani community and listened to their issues. Pakistani Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ameer Khurram Rathore was also present on the occasion.

Criminals can chose not to serve sentences? The Judiciary and establishment led by Bajwa are a disgrace

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and three-time premier Nawaz Sharif has said that during his tenure “people were happy and content” as he blamed Imran Khan’s government for causing the country’s economic crisis.

In an exclusive interview, the former prime minister shared his personal thoughts with the nation as he sat alongside his daughter and party Vice President Maryam Nawaz who is in London to meet her father after three years.

The full interview is set to air today at 4pm (local time).

During the interview, Nawaz expressed his gratitude to Allah that his daughter was sitting next to him, but also reminisced on the “way we were treated the moment we landed in Pakistan”.

Praising Maryam for having “stood by her father like a brave daughter”, Nawaz said his brother Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif “publicly appreciated her a lot” and that the party was “all-praises about her”.

The former prime minister also revealed that when he was incarcerated the circumstances weighed particularly heavily on his mother.

“Whenever she would visit me at the Pindi jail,” he said, she would refuse to leave without Nawaz and insist she be put in the jail cell with her son.

“Shehbaz Sahib has always held this against me,” he added, that their mother loved Nawaz more.

He also recalled how he was sitting beside his mother as she breathed her last.

The PML-N supremo in the interview alleged that all the pain that he and his family were put through was out of “vengeance”.

“In this process of taking revenge against me, you [Imran] have destroyed Pakistan,” said Nawaz as he noted how “everything became more expensive during Imran Khan’s tenure.”

“If you [Imran] wanted to take revenge against me, that’s fine, by all means,” he asked, “but who had asked you to take revenge from Pakistan?”

It may be noted here that Nawaz was sentenced in 2018, to a total of 11 years of imprisonment and was issued Rs1.3 billion fine in Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Avenfield properties references.

His sentence was suspended in 2019 by the Lahore High Court on medical grounds and he was permitted to fly to London to seek treatment, after which he did not return.

There are speculations that there has been a change of heart of powers that be towards the elder Sharif and steps are being taken to allow him to return to the country as his younger sibling Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif holds on to power. The ruling party has already speculated about his return in September, and there are rumours that his cases will also be taken care of systematically.

During the interview, Nawaz was also asked if he would run for prime minister a fourth time in response to which, he can be heard laughing. More details are to follow after the interview is aired later today.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and three-time premier Nawaz Sharif in an interview expressed hopefulness for taking office again following the general elections next year.

In an exclusive interview, the former prime minister shared his personal thoughts with the nation as he sat alongside his daughter and party Vice President Maryam Nawaz who is in London to meet her father after three years.

During the interview, he was asked if he would run for the prime minister's office a fourth time in response to which, he can be heard laughing as he added "God willing" (Inshallah).

There are speculations that there has been a change of heart of powers that be towards the elder Sharif and steps are being taken to allow him to return to the country as his younger sibling Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif holds on to power.

Last month, the ruling party already speculated about his return and there are rumours that his cases will also be taken care of systematically.

'Imran copied 'absolutely not''

During the media talk, the PML-N leader claimed that he had said "absolutely not" when he was offered $5 billion "in a plate" as he questioned rival party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) claim on the stance.

"On what grounds does Imran say absolutely not? We were the ones who said absolutely not," said Nawaz Sharif claiming that he had rejected an offer for $5 billion in an apparent deal.

"I said Pakistan has its own dignity and we would not compromise on that," he added without mentioning details about the said deal.

Nawaz also expressed his gratitude to Allah that his daughter was sitting next to him, but also reminisced on the “way we were treated the moment we landed in Pakistan”.

Praising Maryam for having “stood by her father like a brave daughter”, Nawaz said his brother PM Shehbaz “publicly appreciated her a lot” and that the party was “all-praises about her”.

The ex-PM also revealed that when he was incarcerated the circumstances weighed particularly heavily on his mother.

“Shehbaz Sahib has always held this against me,” he added, that their mother loved Nawaz more.

He also recalled how he was sitting beside his mother as she breathed her last.

Furthermore, he shared the experience of losing his wife while he and his daughter were both in jail and were not permitted to speak to her one last time.

Seems Pakistanis in Pakistan are too docile to throw away these cartels running in the country.

They lack the fire and courage of the Lankans

He is living in hope - remember there is no honour amongst thieves so don't think PPP etc will let him come back like that

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi has claimed that party’s supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif would return to Pakistan by late November, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

In a statement, Hanif Abbasi asserted that the three-time prime minister would return to Pakistan by late November or December.

Earlier in September, it was reported that PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif started consultations with his legal team to ensure his “safe” and earliest return to Pakistan from London.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Friday said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will return to Pakistan before the end of 2022.

While addressing the National Assembly, the defence minister said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests had violated people’s rights, adding that everyone had the right to protest but the limits of the Constitution and law should not be crossed.

He said that no development work was done during the past four years under the PTI government, and the incumbent government had explained these circumstances to the people.

Asif also said that the government withdrew money from other sectors and gave it to the flood victims who were undergoing great difficulties due to cold winter nights.

The minister maintained that the federal and provincial governments should provide assistance to disaster victims without discrimination and that the government was not acting on political priorities.

Earlier this week, Asif said former premier Imran Khan should not “target” the institutions that “supported him unconditionally” during the last four years, adding that the chief of the former ruling party could not deliver despite the assistance extended to him.

“After 75 years, we are at a point where we can say that all the institutions are playing their constitutional role. These institutions extended ‘unconditional support’ to Imran Khan,” he said.

“He (Imran) should not attack these institutions but rather should be ashamed of himself that despite their assistance he could not perform.”

Nawaz greenlights poll prep as ‘N’ pushes back plans to ‘save assembly’

LAHORE: In an apparent effort to dispel the impression that the PML-N is ‘running away’ from elections in Punjab, and seemingly out of legal options to forestall a possible dissolution of the provincial assembly, the party’s supreme leader, Nawaz Sharif, has directed the PML-N’s provincial chief to begin homework for shortlisting suitable candidates for polls.

However, party leaders insist they’re only preparing for the eventuality where the province goes to polls; they believe the ruling coalition in Punjab would not dissolve the legislature.

“Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah (who is also the PML-N’s Punjab president) will preside over the party’s provincial chapter meeting on Friday in Model Town regarding preparations for elections,” the party’s Punjab Information Secretary Azma Bokhari told Dawn on Tuesday.

She said the meeting had been called on the directions of the elder Sharif to initiate the shortlisting of suitable candidates for elections in case the Punjab Assembly was dissolved.

PML-N leader says ex-PM directed party to start short-listing candidates in case assembly dissolved

“However, let me tell you, Imran Khan will not have the [house] dissolved at the end of the day. But in case he does, we want to be fully prepared,” MPA Bokhari said.

Earlier, the Sharifs were reportedly advised by ‘well-wishers’ within the party to change their narrative of ‘saving Punjab Assembly at any cost’ and adopt a more confident tone that shows they are not afraid of contesting polls in case Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi dissolves the assembly at the request of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan.

The PML-N had claimed the party wanted to save the assemblies owing to constitutional, economic and law and order reasons.

Out of options?

As the PML-N announces preparations for elections, the party appears to have accepted it may be unable to block dissolution of the Punjab Assembly.

“After consultations with its legal brains, the PML-N seems to have arrived at a conclusion that it doesn’t have many options to forestall the dissolution of the PA, so it is better to prepare to go to polls in the province (if and when the assembly is dissolved),” a party source told Dawn on Tuesday.

He said even the efforts of PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari, who had been tasked by the PDM to woo ‘disgruntled’ PTI MPAs, could not bear fruit as yet, nor could Opposition Leader in the PA Hamza Shehbaz manage to convince PTI MPAs to switch loyalties.

The source said in case the opposition failed to table a no-trust move against the Punjab CM, imposition of governor’s rule and seeking a vote of confidence from the CM were the other options, which could not be exercised as the PA was in session. “Keeping such a scenario in mind, the PML-N supremo has given a go-ahead to the party’s Punjab chapter to launch election preparations,” he added.

Talking to a private TV channel on Tuesday, Interior Minister Sanaullah asked CM Elahi to dissolve the assembly, as his party was ready to contest elections.

Nawaz’s return

On the other hand, former National Assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has claimed that former premier Nawaz was returning to Pakistan in January.

“Nawaz Sharif will return to the country next month and also award party tickets to those aspiring to contest the polls,” the federal minister told a private TV channel on Tuesday.

In the party’s recent meetings, a good number of leaders had requested the elder Sharif to return and face the challenge posed by Imran Khan. Senior leaders like Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Rana Sanaullah have previously said Nawaz would be in Pakistan ahead of the next general elections.

“Nawaz Sharif is looking for some relief in the corruption cases to pave the way for his return,” the source said.

PTI Chairman and former premier Imran Khan on Thursday said PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif was trying to return to Pakistan and was “posing himself as Nelson Mandela”.

He lashed out at the ruling coalition government, saying “thieves who had looted the country” had returned back after “striking a deal with General (retd) Bajwa”.

Addressing the students via video link from Zaman Park, Lahore the PTI chief noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited foreign countries and said that he had not come to seek financial help but was compelled to do so.

“Your premier degrades the nation when he speaks like this. He (PM Shehbaz) is a shameless person. What respect do thieves enjoy? They steal [nation’s] money and send it abroad. They (ruling coalition) say they will not work hard and utilise the aid money,” he said.

“First they struck a deal with General (retd) Musharraf and now with General (retd) Bajwa,” he added, saying “they will now plunder the nation’s wealth”.

The PTI chairman said that the ruling coalition got cases worth Rs1100 billion quashed against them after recent amendments in the accountability law.

He said cases against PPP Co-Chairman Asif Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur were also quashed, noting that the “entire Sindh knows that both siblings take commission in every project”.

One criminal wishes another happy birthday

The coward still doesn't dare set foot in Pakistan.

How long before Zardari, the Sharif chors and co. discover that they are dangerously ill and/ or they can't stay in Pakistan any longer?

The economy and their kleptomania is leading to that medical prognosis.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan on Wednesday said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif could not return to Pakistan due to the current political situation as well as allegations that Nawaz was involved in the murder of senior journalist Arshad Sharif and the alleged assassination attempt against former premier Imran Khan.

Talking to media personnel outside the Lahore High Court (LHC), Aitzaz stated that London police would also undoubtedly probe these allegations.

He furthered that neither London nor Pakistan’s atmosphere was favourable for Nawaz.

Aitzaz maintained that the PML-N appeared confused regarding decisions to counter the actions of the Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaf (PTI). Quoting the recent approval of 35 resignations of PTI’s MNAs by the speaker National Assembly, he said it seemed as though the PML-N was worried, confused and afraid of Imran’s popularity.

The PPP leader further said that he did not see general elections in the centre and provinces at the same time.

He stated that Imran is only left with the option of coming out on the road again after the approval of PTI's resignations, as there was limited scope for the party within the National Assembly.

Commenting on the local body elections in Karachi, he said that the PPP succeeded while other political parties stood in good position.

He added that only the PML-N did not achieve a significant victory in Karachi’s election which suggested that they were losing their vote bank with every passing day.

We have no state institutions, we have a mafia owned state where there is no law and order.

Nawaz Sharif will only come back once Imran Khan is disqualified or sent to jail. Over the past few months PML/PDM is desperately trying to achieve this through dozen of cases against Kaptaan, from Toshakhana, foreign funding to not acknowledging that he has a daughter, etc etc.
Every time they try to malign him they think that will be the end of his politics and all of a sudden we hear reports that Main Sahab is coming back soon. Then somehow Imran hangs on and survives and Main Sahab changes his plans. I'm sure Nawaz Sharif gets nightmares of Imran bowling bouncers at him.

In the mid 1980s and early 1990s right before the Pakistani Generals propped up this filthy Nawaz Sharif, we had the best per capita income in South Asia and were competing with Far East Asia. 30 years later we are a case study on corruption, mismanagement and falling behind our peers. Now after giving this filthy three governments the generals gifted his brother the PM seat and paving the way for his fourth term. Mashallah. There is a tinge of provincialism in there too. For Pakistani Army, Punjab is the crown jewel and the rest of the country can go take a dump. Observe how the economic engine of Karachi is completely hijacked or how KPK and Baluchistan are again feeling the heat of terrorism but the Army is busy in trying to 'manage' IK in Punjab. For the Army only a Punjabi is acceptable at the helm, that is why Mujeeb wasn't allowed to rule, ZAB was hanged, Benazir was dismissed multiple times (she was no angel) and IK's rule was cut short while the Punjabi Sharifs have been given four goes at the helm.

I'm envious of our Bangladeshi brothers who took independence from the corrupt establishment. I hope there comes a time when Pakistan also rid of these brown sahibs colonial leftovers. Recently read a tweet which hit right at home...

NAWAZ SHARIF TO LEAD PML-N’S ELECTION CAMPAIGN: RANA SANAULLAH

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has once again indicated the return of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Supremo Nawaz Sharif’s return to the country and said that Sharif will lead the party’s election campaign, ARY News reported on Monday.

Rana Sanaullah said in a statement that Nawaz Sharif will lead the PML-N’s election campaign soon. He said that Sharif will also decide on the candidate for the prime minister’s slot.

Criticising the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief, Sanaullah said that Imran Khan is staging protests for six to seven months but he faced failures after being rejected by the nation. He added that Khan will not accept the results even if elections are held tomorrow.

He alleged that Imran Khan is planning to destroy the national economy. To a question, Sanaullah replied that Mohsin Naqvi is an eligible person for the caretaker Punjab Chief Minister’s (CM) slot who was nominated after the consultations of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) parties.

To a question regarding the verdict of the Naqeebullah Mehsud murder case, the interior minister said that those who are rejecting the verdict can challenge it. He added that the court needs evidence to decide on a case.

He said that some people refused to testify before the court. He suggested filing an appeal in the high court if someone thinks the verdict is flawed.

Regarding the power breakdown, he said that the electricity supply would be restored within 12 hours.

Sanaullah announced that Malik Saiful Malook Khokhar has been appointed as PML-N Lahore president. The decision was taken by PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif.

He said that Khokhar was the victim of political vengeance during the Imran Khan-led government. He hoped that Khokhar will reorganise the PML-N in Lahore.

PML-N ‘clueless’ about Nawaz's homecoming
Information minister refutes reports of supremo's return a day after Rafique predicted elder Sharif's homecoming

At a time when Punjab is just over a month away from witnessing general elections, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership remains clueless about whether or not the party supremo Nawaz Sharif would be coming back to lead fire up the campaign.

For months, the PML-N leadership has constantly been casting the PML-N’s top leader as the ‘only hope of the nation’ – an attempt to counter PTI chairman Imran Khan and his growing popularity – and has frequently predicted his 'imminent homecoming'.

However, time and again, the expected deadlines or predictions have backfired.

Once again, amid the chatter of the elder Sharif's return, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb refuted on Monday the rumours as well as news reports that Sharif was returning to Pakistan anytime soon.

To a question whether Sharif is finally coming back and if he would spend the last 10 days of Ramzan in Saudi Arabia before coming back to Pakistan, the information minister said that there was “no news so far” in this regard.

She didn’t object to the comment that there was no plan for Sharif of returning to Pakistan yet and only rumours are making rounds.

The minister has refuted Sharif’s return just a day after Minister for Railways and Aviation Khwaja Saad Rafique said that Sharif would soon return to the country and give an outline of the new justice system and economy.

While addressing an organizational convention in Faizpur, Maryam Nawaz said that Imran Khan used to threaten people with severe consequences but today, he is hiding like a rat. She claimed that Lahore has rejected Imran Khan yesterday.

Yes, Zardari went to jail but he was and not loved by the people like how Imran is. Imran has massive support in and outside Pakistan.

Just imagine if Khan is arrested...how will the people react...the whole country will burn.

Imran is trying his level best to make the Establishment understand the consequences of his arrest. Will they be able to save an almost bankrupt county which is already on it's knees...will they be able to avoid a civil war?

Nawaz will not return until IK is imprisoned for a long time. That too will never happen. The London plan of our McDonald's loving ex PM will never come true, insha Allah.

Lahore is ready to burn

You obviously not aware of ground realities.

Main Mall road is empty - people staying home and there is fear of impending doom.

You can also say goodbye to any favourable IMF terms.

Pakistanis are good at own goals. This is there best one so far.

Nawaz Sharif in 2013-2017 achieved way more than any leader in Pakistan. Firstly, he took the decision to carry out two military offensives- Zarb E Azb and Riyad Ul Fasaad. Keep in mind that before 2013, bombings were happening every single day in Pakistan. These two offensives- were highly successful in improving the security situation. A lot of terrorists were either killed or ran away into Afghanistan. The success of these offensives was proved internationally when teams started touring Pakistan again.

The country's traffic issues were solved to a great extent with the construction of motorways across the country. These motorways are available to be used by all Pakistani people. They aren't like Imran's Sehat card which is only available to 10,000 people. Also the introduction of metro buses happened during Nawaz's tenures. Females started going out and seeking education as these metro buses are more passenger friendly and also have CCTV cameras.

The CPEC also materialised under Nawaz, the power projects and infrastructure being developed is absolutely vital to meet our country's power demands. The CPEC project provided jobs to millions of Pakistanis. I feel the CPEC is vital for Pakistan's growth.

Also Nawaz was the first Pakistan PM to carry a pacifist attitude towards India. He genuinely wanted good relations with them and reached out despite criticism from his countrymen. If the Pulvama attack didn't occur, Pakistan and India could have improved their relations quite a lot.

I could go on and on. But hopefully this answers your question.

Thanks for your response at least somebody has made an attempt to defend their leadership. Is that all though?

Their is a lot more. But the main gist is that I believe the 2013 General Elections were the fairest in Pakistan. Because Nawaz never actually had the support of the army. He was elected based on the people's vote. The people of Punjab at that time were hugely Pro-PMLN because Shehbaz was working as the CM and had done brilliantly.

Eventually, it was the army who had the final laugh. But in my view, had Nawaz been allowed to continue. He would have sweeped the 2018 election as well and now in 2023 we would have been in a very different position to what we are in now.

IMRAN KHAN STAGING A CIRCUS FOR FEAR OF ARREST: NAWAZ SHARIF

The former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid Nawaz Sharif has said that PTI chief Imran Khan is staging a circus for fear of his arrest, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

Nawaz Sharif said in a Twitter message, “A person would have died of shame if he had been a brave and honourable person.” The former premier said that he would have left politics instead of being accused of cowardice and dishonour.

Earlier, PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz slammed the PTI chief once again and said that ‘coward’ Imran Khan is hiding like a rat today.

While addressing an organizational convention in Faizpur, Maryam Nawaz said that Imran Khan used to threaten people with severe consequences but today, he is hiding like a rat. She claimed that Lahore has rejected Imran Khan yesterday.

This man is a living meme. How did someone so naive become a major political leader? Money is the only answer I can think of.

If that was the case then why panic over the theft of votes. Why not get recounts on those constituencies or offer new elections? NS has never won a fair election in his life. Look back to 1990 at the Bin laden money and the ISI created opposition, or the 1997 election when BB was kicked out again, when he conspired with the Army or the 2013 election when they stole seats again.
NS has destroyed every institution he has ever laid his hands on. From the Punjab Police rememberthe gullu butts, to the Judiciary being bribed( justice Qayyum and the Balochistan suit cases and Rafiq Tarrar and attacks on the SC. The lies to the IMF of his govt by Munshi over actual figures.
Countries are built through strong institutions and this perennial loser only wanted personal loyalty, never loyalty to PK. His used politics to steal billions and in his desperation to cover up, he throw PK to the dogs. PK is bankrupt because of him and the Generals

Ganja is holed up in London too afraid to come back to Pakistan but likes to run his mouth off.

What do you make of this.

After the support of DHA, 13 parties and state resources what happened in Zaman Park during last two days, Nawaz Sharif should spit and drown in it

So to summarise your response above

Nawaz built or began the motorway network which helped reduce the traffic problems the nation suffers from. If that is the case do you have any data to back this up? Do we know if traffic has been reduced on cities? How many people actually use the motorways as there is a cost to them?

You also claimed above that he gave the go ahead for the mentioned operations. We now know that he didn't really have a hand in any of that and was a mere rubber stamp but I'll give you this one as he was the chief executive.

Also you made a comment about public transport which again inthink we should give him some credit for. However do we have transparwncy on the cost and benefits? Would it have been better to have trains or trams? What are the future benefits and costs etc?

Finally you made a small dig at universal health care. Inthink that one dig exemplifies the difference between the two ideologies. The sherief ideology involves: infrastructure. Notably roads. And not much else. Why? Because that's where you can milk it to your hearts content. Its also short term thinking without a real plan.

However the PTI thinking is around human development and creating an efficient workforce to increase industrilaisation increase exports and thus grow the economy organically. Universal healthcare means workers can save more money stay healtheir thus contributed more to the 3conomy and achieve a sense of worth and freedom. It is future thinking.

So to sum it up. PMLn thinks in the immediate short term with no future planning and no real benefits analysis.

In 30 years of approximate rule their achievements are relatively minor and haven't moved the development index anywhere.

NAWAZ SHARIF LABELS IMRAN KHAN ‘TERRORIST’

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif labeled former prime minister Imran Khan a ‘terrorist’, ARY News reported.

“I knew that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan was a ‘fraudster’ but he never knew that he [Khan] was a ‘terrorist’ too,” Nawaz Sharif was quoted as saying while talking to newsmen in London.

Sharif said the government had formed a joint investigation team (JIT) to probe into the incidents that took place outside Imran Khan’s residence in Zaman Park.

‘I neither saw a fraudster nor a terrorist in Pakistan’s politics like him,’ the former prime minister said.

Responding to a question, Nawaz Sharif who taught PTI workers how to ‘throw’ petrol bombs on police? For the first time in Pakistan’s history a political party is doing such things, he added.

Polls will be ‘death knell for Nawaz’s politics’
Imran says if Constitution is set aside, rulers can do anything

Former prime minister and Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Friday said Nawaz Sharif was heading towards his political death in the coming elections, which according to him, were delayed in violation of the Constitution.

Talking to media persons after attending a hearing at the Lahore High Court (LHC), the former prime minister said he pinned his hopes on the Supreme Court, which could eliminate this law of the jungle from the country.

To a question whether he thought the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to delay the elections until Oct 8 would be overturned by the apex court, Imran replied that he pinned his hope on the Supreme Court.

“If they [the Supreme Court] will not overturn the decision, the question will rise as to how will the elections be held in October? You will [again] say that there is no money,” he said. “It will get Pakistan out of the law of the jungle. Now, there is no other way left.”

Imran asked what new would happen on October 8 that is not happening now. “Will the economic conditions be fixed by that time? Will terrorism end [by October]? The situation is only getting worse and more dangerous,” he said.

The PTI chairman warned that if the Constitution was set aside, the rulers could do anything. He mentioned the former military ruler Gen Ziaul Haq, who promised elections in 90 days but stayed in power for 11 years.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry approached the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday to challenge the Lahore High Court's (LHC) decision rejecting his request to be made party to case concerning Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif's return to Pakistan.

The PTI leader argued that at the time of Nawaz being allowed to travel abroad Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had guaranteed that his brother will return to Pakistan.

Fawad had earlier filed a petition in the LHC to become a party in the ongoing case, which was rejected by the high court.

In his plea before the apex court today, the PTI leader maintained that Nawaz Sharif was a “fugitive criminal” and Shehbaz instead of acting as his guarantor “issued him a diplomatic passport”.

He implored the court to order the LHC to make him party in the case and questioned if the bench was “justified to dismiss the petition of the petitioner without discussing the facts and law point involved in the petition”.

When will the great Nawaz Sharif ameer-ul-Momineen return to pakistan? What is the Sher scared of? Isn’t he basically now an overseas Pakistani meddling in Pakistan’s affairs?

He will never return. He is known to be a phattoo who cried like a baby when mushy jailed him. He is not going to want to experience anything like that again at this old age. He will be rather happy spending his final days lavishly in UK spending all the money he stole from the country.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is in a self-imposed exile in London on medical grounds since November 2019, performed Umrah with his family members under tight security.

According to a report, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President and Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz, her husband Captain (R) Safdar Awan and other members of the family performed pilgrimage together.

The Sharif family offered Umrah under very tight security with special guards giving them protection during the Tawaaf of Holy Ka’aba.

The members of the Sharif family thanked Allah Almighty for reaching Makkah to perform Umrah.

After completing Umrah, the PML-N supremo also prayed for the development of the country while Maryam expressed her happiness and devotion.

Earlier this month, sources claimed Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud invited Nawaz — who is considered closer to the royal family — and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the kingdom to perform Umrah as a gesture of goodwill.

The Sharif family reached Saudi Arabia on April 11. Nawaz Sharif is visiting the holy land after six years.

Sources further told The News that Nawaz had initially planned to stay in the Kingdom till April 26, but Hussain Nawaz and his family had requested him to prolong his stay in Jeddah at his residence.

According to sources, Nawaz Sharif might hold a meeting with the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdul Aziz in Jeddah.
