Chris Silverwood appointed as Sri Lanka Men’s Team Head Coach

Head Coach Trevor Bayliss when England won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.

Silverwood played six Tests and seven ODIs for England and played county cricket for Yorkshire and Middlesex.

After his playing career, Chris has taken into coaching, taking over Mashonaland Eagles in Zimbabwe, winning the inaugural Logan Cup before a very successful stint as the Head Coach of Essex County Cricket.

His first competitive assignment with the Sri Lanka National team will be the upcoming Test series away in Bangladesh. He is contracted for a two year period.

“We are delighted to appoint Chris as the new Head Coach of the national team. “I am very excited to be on board with Sri Lanka and I cannot wait to get over to Colombo and get started. They have a talented and passionate group of players and I am really looking forward to meeting up with the players and coaching staff very soon,” said Chris Silverwood.

^why does the SL board not appoint any local legends as the head coach? Silverwood is an absolute nobody.

^why does the SL board not appoint any local legends as the head coach? Silverwood is an absolute nobody.

How many legends do you see involved with SL cricket in any capacity? Their administration is rotten to the core, worse than Pakistans.

Sri Lanka have been chopping and changing too much. Also, there seems to be infighting.

They have lost the plot after the legends retired.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Naveed Nawaz, former Sri Lanka Test and ODI player, as the Assistant Coach of the National Team for a two year term, effective from 1st April 2022.

Nawaz, before taking over the new role, was functioning as the Head Coach of the Bangladesh under 19 Team, where he led the team to an ICC under 19 Cricket World Cup win in 2020.

His first competitive assignment with the national team will be the upcoming Sri Lanka Tour of Bangladesh, which will also be the first such assignment of the newly appointed Head Coach of the National Team Chris Silverwood.

In the meantime, the following coaches were appointed to work with the national team during the upcoming Sri Lanka Tour of Bangladesh.

They did have Jayasuriya but he was convicted of corruption. If even he can't be trusted, I shudder to think what else goes on under their current administration.

What a random appointment.

Don't see this working out. Chris Silverwood made a plethora of mistakes as England coach with the biggest sin being repeatedly misreading conditions and picking the wrong team.

Although England did win in Sri Lanka last year.

I don't think any coach can revive SL's cricket with so many structural problems which's sad as I grew up on the era of Murali torturing batsmen surrounded by chattering close-in fielders and Sanath's square cutting like a madman.

Anyway SL have bigger issues right now than their cricket.

Tour of Bangladesh 2022

Kamil Mishara

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided to recall Kamil Mishara from Bangladesh for his alleged breach of rules [(clause no 1 (j)] governing the player's conduct/behavior as depicted in his Tour Contract.

Accordingly, Mishara, who is a part of the 18-member squad taking part in the ongoing Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh Series, will be immediately flown back to Sri Lanka.

Upon his return, Sri Lanka Cricket will conduct a full inquiry into the ‘violations’ and upon the outcome of the inquiry, further actions would be determined on the player.

(SLC) has decided to recall Kamil Mishara from Bangladesh for his alleged breach of rules [(clause no 1 (j)] governing the player's conduct/behavior as depicted in his Tour Contract.

Seems Sri Lanka cricket has a major problem with indiscipline. Player after player failing to stick to the rules.

Sri Lanka Cricket Appoints Lasith Malinga as Bowling Strategy Coach

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lankan fast bowling legend and former captain of the ODI and T20I team, as the ‘Bowling Strategy Coach’ of the National Team for the white ball segment of the Australia Tour of Sri Lanka.

Malinga, during the tour, will support Sri Lanka’s bowlers, providing tactical insight and technical expertise to help the on-field execution of strategic plans.

Sri Lanka Cricket is confident that Malinga’s vast experience and renowned death-bowling expertise, especially in the T20 format, will help the team immensely going into this all-important series.

Lasith Malinga held the same role with the national team when the team toured Australia in February this year for a white ball series.

Frankly, The only golden patch the SL team had was from 1996 to about 2011 a period of 15 years in their cricketing history. Other than that they were just an average team.

Sri Lanka have become a very unusual team.

They can beat big teams but can also lose badly against average/minnow teams.

Consistency is missing.

In other words they are an unpredictable team

They have some very good players. The key would be to strike an ideal balance of the team and nurture the talent.

Interesting developments in last year or so. Mickey Arther gave the initial direction and team combo to Srl (He has that nag but, rarely makes it to the next level and that is generating consistent wins with what he has created). Then I believe they hired Chris Silverwood at a pretty good time, he had a good CV with results at county level and that is what got him Eng job but it was not an easy task manage Eng test side and produce instant results so they let him go (His LOI results were pretty good). Add to it the U-19 WC winning coach with BD, Naveed Nawaz an ex Srilankan cricketer who is working as assistant coach with the team.

Some good players and decent setup this. However, they still need some consistent batsmen and pacers to be able to achieve success in different conditions. One batsman who can average 40+ in ODIs and around 50 in tests out of the lot along with a pacer who can consistently average atleast sub 30 in ODIs and Tests along with some longevity would add a lot to the team.

Congrats to Sri Lanka on their first ever ODI series win against Australia. Well played!

Ramesh Mendis - The only decent Test match spin prospect for Sri Lanka!

Mendis has comfortably outbowled Embuldeniya in this match. He has put more energy into the ball, has been better with his length and has looked threatening even to righties unlike the slow, overpitching Embuldeniya and Vandersay.

Thoughts?

SLC wishes to provide the following clarification pertaining to several media reports published citing that ‘SLC refused to bear the surgery cost of Kusal Janith Perera’s shoulder injury’.

Sri Lanka Cricket in consultation with the SLC Medical Panel worked out a 12-week Rehabilitation Program for Kusal Janith Perera’s recovery from a long-standing shoulder injury to ensure that the player is ready for selections for the T20I Asia Cup and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Towards meeting this goal, Sri Lanka Cricket advised Kusal Janith Perera to refrain from playing any competitive cricket and undergo the proposed ‘Rehabilitation Program,’ under the supervision of the SLC Medical panel.

The SLC also advised the player that postponing the rehabilitation program may negatively affect his injury, however, instead of heeding the advice of the SLC, the player took part in the Lanka Premier League 2021, thus affecting his recovery program.

Even after his participation in the Lanka Premier League 2021, Sri Lanka Cricket’s Medical Paneldecided to rehabilitate the player, focusing on the upcoming T20i Asia Cup and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, thus leaving him out from several international tours, which was played during the recent months.

However, despite these efforts, he failed to take part in regular ‘rehabilitation’ work and his last appearance at the High Performance Center for ‘rehabilitation’ was on the 29th April 2022.

Hence, his lack of commitment for a consistent rehabilitation program resulted in Sri Lanka Cricket having to rethink of making a full commitmentin this case, as the delay caused by the player, did not fall in line with SLC’s overall program of preparing players for the upcoming T20I Asia Cup and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

However, Sri Lanka Cricket hasinformed KusalJanith Perera that despite this situation, a major portion of the cost required for hissurgery will be borne by Sri Lanka Cricket.

They may have some good players but nowhere the level the quality of player and teams of the past. But, we really shouldn't be struggling against this mob.

That's what happens with unmerited selections and bad development of our own.

Think you are overrating our own cricket. We lost the test series to Australia at home recently. Were only able to manage a draw in WI. We don't have good players of spin that we used to have (Younis, Inzi, Misbah, Yousaf even Malik). We don't have 2 proper spinners who can run through a lineup like Ajmal/A Rehman or Yasir/Zulfi. Our pace attack without Shaheen is still a toothless kitten.

Statement from Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka Cricket vehemently refutes the false, derogatory and malicious allegations made by Mr. Nalin Bandara MP at the Parliament today on the Asia Cup 2022.

SLC categorically states that the said statement is baseless, frivolous and vexatious and hadbeen uttered with zero knowledge of the subject matter.

We wish to categorically state that ASIA CUP is not a tournament belonging to Sri Lanka Cricket to claim its ownership and to host it at the SLC’s sole discretion unlike a Bilateral tour which is held in Sri Lanka and to the contrary Asia Cup is organized, structured and controlled
by the Organization called and referred to as the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) which membership constitutes of cricket playing Member countries within the geographical area of Asia.

Being an independent entity, ACC offers the opportunity for each member country to host the Asia Cup in each respective year of such member country subject to a stringent evaluation and confirmation of the supporting background and other requirements which provides a conducive environment for hosting of the said event with a view to maximizing the profits of the ACC.

Therefore, it should be noted that the Asian Cricket Council having closely monitored the situation and developments in Sri Lanka during the last few months (both economic and social) after much deliberation on the 24th of July at a meeting held among member states decided to play the matches of the 2022 Asia Cup in UAE instead of Sri Lanka, whilst keeping the hosting opportunity and rights to SLC.

By the statement made by MP Nalin Bandara the actual perspective and the nature of the entire Asia Cup 2022 has been fully distorted and Sri Lanka Cricket is intensely of the view that no Member of the Parliament should make such statements by the use of Parliamentary privileges at a time when SLC has been performing extremely well and the Management has given all the support not only to the Players and game of Cricket but also to the Country, Economy and also to the other sports whilst bringing much needed forex income.

Further SLC condemns the highly irresponsible statement made by Mr. Nalin Bandara MP as it appears that the said statement has been made without verifying the facts and without making any inquiry from Sri Lanka Cricket.

It should be further noted that no independent report or research has ever revealed nor confirmed that the Country has ever received a staggering amount of USD 50 Million from hosting an event in Sri Lanka as claimed by Mr. Bandara MP and SLC considers such comments are instigated by few individuals with vested interests to destabilize Sri Lanka Cricket to achieve their personal goals.

SLC further wishes to state that no venue in Sri Lanka is capable of accommodating 100,000 spectators for a single match in any of the tournament in this magnitude as the maximum stadium capacity generally limits to 30,000. therefore, SLC considers that the said comment
made by Mr. Bandara on the spectator participation is rendered futile.

Commenting on the hosting of bilateral events, SLC wishes to inform that a bilateral tour is only involved with two nations competing each other and under the present situation in the country, the logistical and other arrangements in relation to the two recently concluded bilateral
tours (Australia Tour and Pakistan Tour) were fulfilled amidst greatest difficulties.

However, an Event like Asia Cup is involved with six highly reputed Cricketing Nations in the world and under the prevailing circumstances in Sri Lanka owing to the fuel crisis, power supply limitations and other logistical issues confronted by both facilitators and spectators, it was considered by the ACC that the hosting of the event in Sri Lanka is beyond imaginable in view of the added demands made by stakeholder and its commercial partners.

Moreover, SLC strongly believes that the disgruntle elements have now been activated to jeopardize and destabilize affairs of Sri Lanka Cricket and game of Cricket with a view to attaining their vicious motives when in actuality, SLC is heading to the right and passionate
directions.

Therefore, SLC wishes to state that by the said statements of such individuals not only hatred is spread among the general public towards the affairs of Sri Lanka Cricket but also misleads the hierarchy of the Government by such baseless and false facts and accusations.

The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) at an emergency meeting held today (15th August) having extensively deliberated on the false, derogatory and distorted statement made by the newly appointed Chairman of the National Sports Council, Mr Arjuna Ranatunga during a recent Media Interview (Derana Big Focus), has decided to take appropriate legal action against him who has spoken with malicious intent, damaging the goodwill and reputation of the SLC and have deliberately made public comments by making false and defamatory accusations against the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket.

Accordingly, Members of the Executive Committee have sent Letters of Demand to Mr. Arjuna Ranatunga, claiming Rs. 2 Billion as damages for the reputational losses that occurred to Sri Lanka Cricket and its officials by the said false and derogatory statement.

The following is a response to several media reports published citing a statement made by Mr. Arjuna Ranatunga mentioning that ‘Sri Lanka Cricket has sought permission to send 7 officials on an overseas joy ride, spending millions of rupees’.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to inform the public that the ‘news reports,’ published quoting Mr. Arjuna Ranatunga pertaining to the organization's seeking permission from the Ministry of Sports to send 07 officials on an overseas tour for official duties, provide a misleading picture, thus tarnishing the image of Sri Lanka Cricket and its officials.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that in this mentioned case, Sri Lanka Cricket has sought permission from the Ministry of Sports to send 07 Executive Committee Members to engage in official matters during the ongoing Men’s Asia Cup.

Any tours undertaken or planned to be undertaken by its Executive Committee Members are purely aimed at conducting "official work" pertaining to the development of the game of cricket in Sri Lanka and nothing else.

While being the host cricketing board for the Asia Cup 2022, the work expected to be done by these officials of SLC during the planned tour to the UAE includes: meeting and discussing bilateral cricket arrangements with the officials of the member countries; holding discussions with the Asian Cricket Council; and also meeting with the private sector representatives, who can bring in massive commercial opportunities for the game in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that with a massive Future Tours Program (FTP) in place for Sri Lanka during the years 2023 to 2027 and also several editions of the Lanka Premier League, it is essential that SLC officials start working on those tours, tournaments, and also the Lanka Premier League’s upcoming editions, and in this case, high-level international collaborations are required to ensure that we fulfill and achieve our cricketing objectives perfectly.

Executive Committee Members

Sri Lanka Cricket also wishes to emphasize here that the Executive Committee members of the SLC are serving in an honorary capacity for the betterment of the game and are not paid a salary, and they serve the game in various capacities such as' holding chairmanship, or membership 'in various cricket related committees or sub committees, such as' Tour organizing, Domestic Cricket, Umpiring, Tournament Organizing, and many more.’

As a result, the Executive Committee members of Sri Lanka Cricket deserve enormous credit for the honorary services they provide to the game of cricket, and such services should be commended rather than degraded by false claims like those made by Mr. Ranatunga, as quoted in the news reports.

SLC Financing Method

Sri Lanka Cricket also wishes to announce that our organization is an independently managed entity and is engaged in financing its operations purely from the money SLC has earned through conducting international tournaments, selling team sponsorships and also selling its "Broadcasting Rights,’ and from the funds disbursed by the International Cricket Council for its full member countries.

Hence, SLC wishes to emphasize that at no point the SLC is dependent on government funds to finance its operations nor the Government of Sri Lanka incurs any expenditure in respect of administration of Cricket in Sri Lanka whereas as seen in the recent past SLC has contributed funds immensely for diversified purposes including but not limited to, for the purchase of essential medical supplies and for the Sports Development fund at the Ministry of Sports, and funds granted to be utilized for the participation at the Commonwealth Games etc.

In the said backdrop, SLC considers the statement made by Mr. Ranatunga to be false, malicious, vindictive, derogatory of SLC and has been made for collateral purposes.

The source said that the former Test player was paid $1,850 a day plus expenses for the 100 days a year he was expected to spend in the country, which is suffering its worst economic downturn.

Moody will leave by the end of this month or before the T20 World Cup starts in Australia next month, another source said.

Former Sri Lanka head coach Moody was appointed director of cricket in February last year to help prepare the team for the T20 World Cup and the 50-over version in India in 2023.

There was no immediate comment from the Australian, who last month said that he was taking a similar director of cricket post at Desert Vipers in the newly formed UAE-based International League T20.

Under Moody, Sri Lanka emerged earlier this month as surprise winners of the Asia Cup, seen as a tune-up for the World Cup.

As director of cricket Moody drew up a performance-based pay structure which was resisted by the national squad.

But they were eventually forced to cave in following threats that they would be dropped unless they agreed.

Sri Lanka has faced acute shortages of food, fuel and medicines since late last year, but Sri Lanka Cricket remains flush with cash, according to board officials.

Last week it donated half a million dollars to a cancer hospital which is desperately in need of life-saving medicines and medical equipment.

Funny how these things come to light almost always when a country is doing badly economically.

'Director of Cricket' seems like strange position to appoint a foreigner though, who has no knowledge of how the cricket system in your country works.

Sri Lanka Cricket’s Executive Committee mutually agreed with Mr. Tom Moody, who was functioning as the "Director of Cricket," to exist from his contract with immediate effect.

The Executive Committee of the SLC, after much deliberation, was of the opinion that Tom Moody's services are no longer required as he was directly reporting to the Technical Advisory Committee, which has ceased to exist now.

Moody's appointment as the Director of Cricket, effective March 1, 2021, was made based on a recommendation by the Technical Advisory Committee of the SLC.

Sri Lanka Cricket, while thanking Tom for his contribution to the game of cricket in Sri Lanka during his tenure, wishes him the very best for his future endeavors.

Tom Moody commented, “It was a privilege to service SLC again and I’m proud of what I managed to achieve during my term with the guidance of the Technical Advisory Committee.”

The influence of the ‘Born Again’ religious group in matters concerning the Sri Lankan cricket team has been brought into question among a number of issues covered in a 63-page report compiled by the five-member committee headed by retired High Court Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena that was presented to Minster of Sports and Youth Affairs Roshan Ranasinghe recently.

The committee was appointed to investigate several incidents related to Sri Lanka cricket during - and in the backdrop of - last year’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

The report covers the incident relating to Danushka Gunathilaka’s arrest on charges of sexual assault, Chamika Karunaratne’s disciplinary breach, the impact of the ‘Born again’ religious group on the national cricket team, financial irregularities relating to spending on officials and player fitness matter.

The committee has also presented a series of recommendations pertaining to the areas investigated

The report did not find conclusive evidence that Sri Lanka’ performance or team selection during the T20 World Cup was influenced by the ‘Born Again’ group, but did issue a strong recommendation that their involvement be paid special attention to; as there exists the possibility of issues arising in future.

As per the report prepared by the committee, certain team players, when approached, had even refused to provide accurate evidence or speak to the committee for fear that any statements of theirs may negatively impact their career going ahead.

The report contained a statement from Frederick Christopher Jerome Fernando, the leader of the ‘Born Again’ sect in question, named Prophet Jerome Fernando. He has stated to the committee that he - through the use of divine intervention - provides physical and mental healing to those suffering from ailments and that he, in some instances, can predict injuries and heal them as well.

Fernando has stated that he has not met any Executive Committee officials of Sri Lanka cricket face-to-face in his religious practices, nor does he have any sort of private connection to anyone involved with Sri Lanka cricket and that no such individuals had approached him seeking his help. However, he added that he would not know if they had attended any religious worship in a general capacity.

Nevertheless, the report goes on to add that on another occasion, Fernando contradicts this statement, expressing that Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Jeffrey Vandersay, Emerging Team coach Ruwan Kalpage, umpire Lyndon Hannibal and cricket commentator Roshan Abeysinghe are members of his church, as was Kumar Sangakkara at one time, though he is presently not.

The report thus states that it directly contradicts his previous statement of being unaware of any individuals related to Sri Lanka Cricket having sought his help.

The report adds that in addition to the names previously mentioned, cricketer Sadeera Samarawickrama, as well as SLC officials CEO Ashley de Silva and former high-performance manager Jerome Jayaratne, are also known to be members of the religious group.

Concerningly, it goes on to state that there is evidence that some of the persons named actively seek those facing certain difficulties or problems and, in the guise of offering help, attempt to convert them to followers of the ‘Born Again’ sect.

It should be noted that SLC CEO Ashley de Silva strongly denied being a follower of the group or ever being present at any ‘Born Again’ religious events, as published in our sister newspaper, the Lankadeepa, on Thursday.

The report mentions an individual named Pastor Terry, from the same church, confronting Buddhist cricketer Chamika Karunaratne and attempting to persuade him to hear the merits of joining the ‘Born Again’ group.

As a whole, however, the report could not give a definite conclusion that the ‘Born Again’ sect had a direct influence on the national cricket team, largely due to the fact that witnesses were hesitant to give genuine and complete disclosures regarding ‘Born Again’ followers and those in and around Sri Lanka cricket. Its recommendation, marked in bold, that special attention be directed to the matter, is one that would need to be taken seriously given the nature of what is revealed in the report.

Questions over the ‘Born Again’ sect’s involvement in Sri Lankan cricket affairs have been rampant on social media in recent times and reached a crescendo when all-rounder Karunaratne was left out of the Sri Lankan squad for their inbound tour against Afghanistan last November, despite being named Player of the Match in his most recent ODI. Allegations were levelled from certain quarters that the all-rounder’s omission was due to religious reasons or disciplinary issues. SLC, however, clarified that the player had been dropped from the squad purely due to poor form.

The report also brought up alleged misappropriation of funds by officials during the T20 World Cup in Australia, calling into question the per diems (approximately 700 dollars per day) granted to 16 officials who travelled on tour, which included Jerome Jayaratne who, as per the report, had no official role with the team.

The much-awaited report on Sri Lanka’s behaviour at the last year’s ICC T20 World Cup ended up along language discrimination after the document was released only and entirely in Sinhala. When asked the new Sports Ministry Secretary, K. Mahesan, while admitting an issue lies there, he added, “The vacancies for the translators remain open. Before the report is raised at the parliament, we need to fix this”.

Despite, Tamil, country’s second-most spoken language, the report was not found to be bilingual, and has raised questions on the basis it was prepared. On top of that, the 63-page report was not translated in English too, the link language, prompting only more questions over it's comprehensibility.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to submit the following pertaining to several media reports published mentioning Mahela Jayawardena’s non-presence with the national team touring New Zealand.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to state that Mahela Jayawardena, who is working for Sr Lanka Cricket as the ‘Consultant Coach,’ has not been tasked with the job of touring with the National Team.

His functions as the ‘Consultant Coach’ are to be in charge of the overall cricketing element of the national teams and to provide invaluable strategic support for the players and management teams at the High-Performance Center.

Accordingly, Jayawardena works on coach and player development programs, the strengthening of domestic cricketing structures, and also focuses on developing the U19, Development, and National Teams.

He only travels with the national team if Sri Lanka Cricket management deems it necessary for him to do so.

We wish to state that Jayawardena, who is a highly regarded cricketing personality across the cricketing world, has been an invaluable asset to Sri Lanka Cricket since his appointment.

According to Mahela, he has even declined a coaching offer from, one of the ICC member board in order to serve Sri Lanka Cricket.

Really hope we don't get to see Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy, they don't deserve it

I have an awful feeling about SL cricket. These guys aren't numpties and something doesn't feel right

Aye something just doesn’t add up.

Mathews is a very experienced player but looked dis-interested today.

Rest of the teams body language was poor as well.

The Sri Lankan fans need to give the team the 90's treatment that was routinely given to Pakistani Cricketers. There was a reason why Sri Lanka moved on from Mathews, very lazy, dis interested cricketer, he was expected to be a role model for the Sri Lankans when Mahela and Sangakarra retired but the guy just let go of himself and took his place for granted.

Lanka always been my 2nd team 🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰

Kusal Mendis and Samrawickrama got something special in store for us, I have faith

There's literally no one on this forum whose favorite team or even 2nd favorite team is Sri Lanka, never seen that before.

I almost think you're trolling but having second thoughts since you're a staff member here, are you serious? why Sri Lanka?

No I'm not serious. Most of my posts are tongue-in-cheek or sarcastic. I am a Lankan fan for the next 5 days though

Fair enough, as predicted.

I was going to be shocked for the rest of my life if I found out the Sri Lankan team actually have external supporters.:ROFLMAO:

Sri Lanka sacks cricket board days after World Cup thrashing

Ranasinghe has been at loggerheads with Sri Lanka Cricket -- the richest sports organisation in the financially stricken country -- for months over allegations of widespread corruption.

The country's 1996 World Cup-winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga has been appointed chairman of a new interim board, Ranasinghe's office said in a statement.

"Sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe has formed an interim committee for Sri Lanka Cricket," the statement said.

The new seven-member panel also includes a retired supreme court judge and a former board president.

The move came a day after the board's second-highest officer, secretary Mohan de Silva, quit.

Ranasinghe publicly demanded the entire board's resignations after Sri Lanka's 302-run World Cup thrashing by hosts India last week.

Sri Lanka were at one point 14-6 and were all out for 55, the fourth-lowest World Cup total in history, while chasing India's 358 in Mumbai on Thursday.

The defeat prompted a public outcry with Ranasinghe saying Sri Lanka Cricket officials had no moral or ethical right to remain in office.

"They should voluntarily resign," he said.

Sri Lanka play Bangladesh later Monday and need a mathematical miracle if they are to squeeze into the last four of the World Cup.

On Saturday Ranasinghe wrote to full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) -- which has rules against political interference in the sport -- asking for understanding and support.

"Sri Lanka Cricket has been besieged with complaints of player disciplinary issues, management corruption, financial misconduct and match-fixing allegations," Ranasinghe said in the letters, released to Sri Lankan media.

The minister was forced by the ICC to withdraw a three-member panel he had appointed last month to investigate alleged corruption at the board after it was deemed to be political interference.

There was no immediate reaction from the ICC to Ranasinghe's latest move.

Sri Lanka have not won the World Cup since 1996, with Ranasinghe blaming the board for the "deterioration" of standards.

Another cabinet minister, Prasanna Ranatunga -- brother of the newly appointed interim board chairman -- told parliament in August that the 1996 triumph had been "the biggest curse for our cricket".

"Money started flowing to the cricket board after 1996 and with that came those who wanted to steal," he said.

The need of the hour, Sl cricket has been pathetic in recent years need a massive overhaul, ICC must also ensure some sort of integrity and credibility in cricket boards to ensure the protection of boards otherwise audience will get fed up watching Eng Aus and Ind play each other

I think issue for them is they do not have all the main players available. Some ditch them their team for franchise cricket. Others get injured. Others get dropped.

Things have been unstable for Sri Lanka for the past 8 years (since the retirements of Mahela, Sanga, and Dilshan).

Leagues have been around for 15 years now, Malinga thrived in the leagues and for the games.

They are just not ambitious enough, look at Angelo absolute dud.

As cricket gets more and more on professional these guys seem super dull and uninterested.

First thing first, don't know about the financial situation of SL cricket, but going by their economy it seems they are in turmoil. Ranatunga should arrange a 7 match ODI series with Afghanistan and select only 13 players for the series, let these players play consistently to battle hardened, this will atleast give SL their best XI regardless of result.

Because atm Sl cricket is in deep waters and need a radical plan.

Sri Lanka court restores sacked cricket board

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal quashed the sports minister’s decision to sack the country’s cricket board and restored the expelled officials on Tuesday pending a full hearing.

The court accepted a petition by board president Shammi Silva challenging minister Roshan Ranasinghe’s move on Monday to dismiss the Sri Lanka Cricket board and appoint an interim committee.

“The restoring of the board is for two weeks, when the court will hear the case again,” a court official said.

Board officials said Silva was due to return to work after securing an order that prevented the interim committee — headed by former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga — from continuing in office.

The government has also appointed a cabinet committee to address “outstanding issues” of the board.

The minister’s action followed a humiliating defeat by India at the World Cup.

Ranasinghe has been at loggerheads with Sri Lanka Cricket — the richest sports organization on the financially stricken island — for months over allegations of widespread corruption.

The country’s 1996 World Cup-winning skipper Ranatunga had vowed to clean up the board and rebuild the national team after taking over on Monday.

Even their skilled players look like mental midgets. Kusal Mendis being the biggest villain in this regard.

And they selected 3 spinners + DDS when their spinners are pretty mediocre. They needed another fast bowler like Binura in the squad.

Only time they looked impressive was when Lahiru bowled a hostile spell in Bangalore.

Their spinners have been the worst in this World Cup.

PAK spinners have been the 2nd worst averaging 81 in this World Cup. SL spinners have averaged 113.

Sri Lanka Assistant Coach Naveed Nawaz pre-match press conference:

[Reporter:]

Back home, it has been a bit chaotic couple of days with the Sri Lankan board and everything that's happening back home. Today also it has been a hot topic in the parliament. Does it affect as a coaching staff for you guys and does it affect the players in any way?

[Naveed Nawaz:]

Well, I think it's a challenging time of course. But we should control the controllables right now. The only control that we have in this tournament is the game tomorrow. So, during the team meetings and whatever discussions we had amongst the coaching group as well as the players was to sort of focus on that. We cannot focus on the matches that we have played and finished or we cannot focus on anything which is happening back home. So, I guess the way to go forward is to put our energies, put our focus on the game tomorrow and try and do the best to our ability.

Shocking how much SL has regressed literally they are getting even worse than Associates nation.

Batsmen are just hacks who throw at everything, Silverwood must be one worried man

PRESS RELEASE

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) would like to issue a statement clarifying recent assertions made by the Minister of Sports in Parliament regarding the transfer of USD 2 million from its accounts. SLC categorically denies any attempt to transfer funds from its accounts to third party accounts and wishes to address the matter to provide clarity to the public.

As the governing entity for cricket in Sri Lanka, SLC receives funds and sponsorship income in USD, which are intentionally kept in our USD accounts to leverage exchange rate fluctuations. However, it is important to note that SLC needs to carry out its operations in Sri Lanka and fulfill financial obligations to stakeholders, including suppliers, on a regular basis.

To meet these expenses, SLC follows the practice of transferring funds from its USD account to its local currency (LKR) accounts. This has been a longstanding practice, as SLC does not derive significant income in local currency. It is crucial to highlight that these transfers are solely for operational purposes and are not indicative of any attempt to transfer funds out of SLC’s accounts.

Thus, any claims stating that SLC is trying to transfer funds out of its accounts are false and factually incorrect. It is evident that such assertions have been made with ulterior motives, aiming to create unnecessary public unrest against SLC.

Additionally, we wish to state that SLC operates in accordance with the provisions of its constitution, which prohibits cash payments exceeding Rs. 10,000/-. Accordingly, and to clarify the misconceptions, we have taken steps to release a schedule to the Parliament and to the Ministry of pending payments, for which cheques have been issued to suppliers, stakeholders, and third parties who have provided services to SLC. The schedule covers the period from 17th August 2023 to 8th November 2023 and ensures that the necessary funds are available in our LKR account to fulfill these payments upon presentation to the bank.

SLC remains committed to transparency and upholding the integrity of its operations. We urge the public to disregard any misinformation and rely on authentic sources for accurate information. SLC will continue working diligently to support cricket development in Sri Lanka and maintain good governance.

How did Pakistan lose to this Sri Lankan team in the Asia Cup Final in 2022 and Asia Cup in 2023?

How did they allow Sri Lanka to score 344 against them in the WC?

Remember when they were over hyped with the 13 win streak tag, making everyone think that they were good team. 8 of those wins came from WC Qualifiers, and 3 vs Afghanistan.

A terrible team that are on level with the likes of Ireland and Scotland.

They have been atrocious. The winning streak was a sham and should be discounted

The Sri Lankan team needs a tough task master. The Sri Lankan board needs to come down hard on the players. It is very clear looking at the body language of the players, they are very content with things and happy to accept mediocrity.

Sri lankan team is going to be busy in 2024 with multiple home and away tours.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Responds to Allegations Raised by Opposition Leader Hon. Sajith Premadasa

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is compelled to address the allegations raisedby the opposition leader, Honorable Sajith Premadasa, during today’s (1st December, 2023) parliamentary session pertaining to SLC’s program of establishing LED digital screens in three of its international venues. Mr. Premadasa questioned the procurement process and alleged that 1) SLC has under invoiced when importing LED screens for the project, 2) SLC has paid money for the supplier before opening the tender, and 3) unreasonably disqualified one of the final bidders.

Hence, we wish to provide the following clarifications on all three allegations:

1) ALLEGED CLAIM ON UNDER-INVOICING SLC vehemently denies this allegation of under-invoicing, as contrary to the claims, SLC asserts that there was no such importation by the organization.

2) ALLEGED CLAIM ON PAYMENT BEFORE THE OPENING OF THE TENDER The opposition leader’s assertion that SLC paid a sum of U$ 29,000 to the supplier on the 13th of July 2023, a day before the opening of the tender, is unequivocally false, and SLC wishes to clarify that no such payment was made and the initial sum of the project cost was disbursed only upon the arrival of the project materials at SLC’s designated sites.

3) ALLEGED CLAIM ON UNREASONABLY DISQUALIFYING ONE OF THE FINAL BIDDERS A competitive bidding process was undertaken in accordance with proper procurement guidelines. The procurement process was conducted by qualified procurement committee, which consisted of a representative from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs. The disqualification of one of the bidders was done in accordance with the National Procurement Guidelines due to procedural lapses. The respective bidder was disqualified as it failed to submit the ‘Form of Bid’ with the authorized signature, a mandatory requirement of the National Procurement Guidelines. In light of these clarifications, Sri Lanka Cricket urges the Honorable Opposition Leader to exercise caution and refrain from making misleading statements using the parliamentary privileges that could adversely affect Sri Lanka’s most iconic sport brand.

Sri Lanka Name Different Captains For Test, ODI And T20 Sides

Sri Lanka cricket selectors Wednesday named different captains for the Test, one-day international and Twenty20 sides ahead of tours by Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. Batting all-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva, 32, will be Test skipper while Kusal Mendis, 28, will lead the ODI team and Wanidu Hasaranga, 26, will captain the Twenty20 squad. It is the first time that Sri Lanka will have separate skippers for all three formats.

"I would have preferred to have the same captain for all three formats," chief selector Upul Tharanga told reporters in Colombo. But we are unable to do that at the moment with the players we have."

Selectors had resolved to retain Mendis through to the next ODI World Cup in 2027, Tharanga said, despite finishing second from bottom at last year's showpiece in India.

Mendis took over after the last-minute injury withdrawal of Dasun Shanaka and Tharanga said Shanaka had not considered for the captaincy due to performance issues over the past two years.

Hasaranga will lead the side for the T20 World Cup starting in June in the West Indies and United States.

The latest selection announcement came ahead of white ball series against Zimbabwe starting Saturday.

Following that Sri Lanka will host Afghanistan for three T20s, three ODIs and one Test match.

Sri Lanka Cricket is looking to obtain the services of Jonty Rhodes, Bharat Arun and former national physiotherapist Alex Kountouri to provide advanced training for local coaches, trainers, and physiotherapists to enhance their skills and competencies by conducting periodic training programs in selected areas, the board stated in a release on Thursday.

The announcement was made at an Executive Committee meeting of the SLC where it was also decided that an award would be introduced to recognise and compensate junior cricketers who perform exceptionally well in Sri Lanka's school cricket tournaments. The award will be given to cricketers at Under-15 and Under-17 level.

The board is also considering starting an Under-21 program especially for kids who don't have a pathway after school cricket. All the relevant stakeholders will be spoken to ensure program hits the ground running at the earliest.

The board also decided to increase the pay of the players participating in the National Super League. Similarly, retiring umpires, scorers and referees will be rewarded starting 2024

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is set to declare open groundbreaking facilities at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium on February 5, with the participation of Honorable Ranil Wickremesinghe, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, as the Chief Guest.

The President will declare open the new facilities following an invitation made by the President of the SLC, Mr. Shammi Silva, and the Executive Committee, while the Honorable Harin Fernando, the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Lands, and Tourism, will also be present at the ceremony.

The new facilities, such as the opening of the country’s first state-of-the-art LED-light-driven sports stadium and the world-class swimming pool, hydrotherapy, and injury rehabilitation unit, are going to strengthen the Center of Excellence of Dambulla, thus strengthening the development of cricket within the North Central, Northern, and North Western provinces.

All teams at the district, provincial, and super-provincial levels ranging from U13, U15, U17, U19 Men’s and Women, U23 Women's, and the National Super League Team of Dambulla will benefit immensely from these facilities to improve and enhance their standards and move forward.

Work towards building more facilities to commence President Ranil Wickremesinghe will also lay the foundation stone to build an indoor net and practice facility, a new media center, and the redevelopment of the grandstand.

The two Vice Presidents of Sri Lanka Cricket, Dr. Jayantha Dharmadasa and Mr. Ravin Wickramaratne, Acting Secretary Mr. Chryshantha Kapuwatte, and Treasurer Mr. Sujeeva Godaliyadda, along with other ex-co-members and Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, will be in attendance at this momentous moment.

Sri Lanka reveal likely T20 World Cup selection plan

The island nation looks set to give the nod to experienced players when deciding on their squad of 15 for the June event.

Chief selector Upul Tharanga has revealed Sri Lanka will favour experience over youth when deciding who will represent the side at this year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

The 2014 T20 World Cup champions caused a shock recently when they recalled experienced wicket-keeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella for their ongoing T20I series with Bangladesh and Tharanga indicated this would be the norm ahead of this year's 20-over showcase in the USA and Caribean in June.

It means the likes of left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage and fellow youngsters Vijayakanth Viyaskanth and Shevon Daniel may have to bide their time and wait for further opportunities at the top level according to Tharanga.

"In T20s we need a wicket-taking option, which is why we opted for Jeffrey (Vandersay) over someone like Dunith (Wellalage)," Tharanga said.

"We felt that Jeffrey was more of an attacking bowler in T20s.

"We had a big discussion regarding Viyaskanth and Jeffrey, and there were differing opinions within the selection committee. But in the end, we went with Jeffrey because the (T20) World Cup is coming up soon and there was a question over whether Viyaskanth could suddenly be brought in to play in a (T20) World Cup. So that's why we went with Jeffrey and his experience.

"We were looking for someone to play in the top-order (following injuries to Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera). We looked at Shevon Daniel, Lasith Croospulle and Dikka (Dickwella), but the first two are still quite young. It was difficult to pick them based purely on their most recent performances."

Tharanga singled out Daniel as a player he expects to shine for Sri Lanka in the future, but said the time will come for the teenager to show his qualities and add to the two white-ball matches he has played for his country.

"They're very talented cricketers, someone like Shevon can play for 10 to 15 years for Sri Lanka," Tharanga noted.

"A player like that, do we drop him into a difficult situation? Or do we hold him back and let him play in the NSL (Sri Lanka domestic competition), give him experience and then bring him into the side.

"We spoke to the captain, as well as the coach, and they also felt Niroshan Dickwella was the best option at this time because heading into a (T20) World Cup, his experience will be useful."

ICC
