Sri Lanka Cricket Implements Historic Amendments to the Constitution - Reduces voting members from 147 to 60

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wishes to announce that its membership at an extraordinary general meeting held on 20th December 2024 approved significant amendments to the Constitution of the SLC, reaffirming its commitment to fostering good governance, transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency in its management structure.

Among the notable changes, a substantial reduction in the total number of voting members from 147 to 60 has been introduced.

The new voting structure ensures that voting rights are determined solely based on the level of cricket played by each member club, with all qualified clubs and associations being entitled to only one vote. This marks a pivotal step towards equitable representation and streamlined decision-making.

Further, in order to strengthen the transparency in financial management, the membership unanimously approved the establishment of the Audit Committee, Investment and Budget Committee, and Related Party Transactions Committee.

This landmark initiative is expected to create a more level playing field for cricketing stakeholders, ensuring that representation within SLC reflects merit and contribution to the development of cricket across the nation.

SLC believes these constitutional amendments will foster a culture of professionalism, transparency, and meritocracy, paving the way for the holistic growth of cricket in Sri Lanka.

In addition to the above changes, the Election Committee for SLC for the year 2025, headed by retired Court of Appeal Judge Ms. Malanie Gunaratne and four other members, was also appointed during the Extraordinary General Meeting.

The election committee will oversee the preparations and conduct the SLC's upcoming elections, scheduled to take place in 2025.

Former India fielding coach joins Sri Lanka setup on a short-term deal

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has brought on board a seasoned Indian coach to lead a specialised fielding camp.
Former India fielding coach R Sridhar is set to lead a 10-day fielding camp in Sri Lanka, the country's cricket board announced in a media release on Tuesday, 6 May.

The program, aimed to ‘elevate the fielding standards of Sri Lankan Cricketers’, will kick off on May 7 and will feature men’s and women’s national squads, Emerging squads, Premier Club players, the National U19 team and Women’s ‘A’ team.

“The Former India fielding coach will begin the program with the Sri Lanka National Men’s team and subsequently train other squads, where he will conduct fielding drills, skill-specific training, and simulated match scenarios, to replicate game conditions,” said the media release.

During his 10-day stint with Sri Lanka Cricket, Sridhar will also work closely with coaches from the National, High Performance and Club setups.

A BCCI Level 3 certified coach, Sridhar brings in a wealth of international experience. He served as India’s fielding coach in over 300 international matches between 2014 and 2021, and more recently had a short spell as assistant coach with the Afghanistan national team in 2024.

Sridhar has previously worked with India’s U19 team as both a fielding coach and an assistant coach. He has also been involved in franchise cricket as a fielding coach Indian Premier League (IPL) side Punjab Kings (then known as Kings XI Punjab).

Angelo Mathews retire from Test cricket

Angelo Mathews will retire from Test cricket after the first Test against Bangladesh in Galle, starting on June 17. He will remain available for white-ball selection "if and when my country needs me", he said in an announcement on his social media handle.

Mathews has not been picked in a white-ball Sri Lanka side in almost a year, but in any case, the forthcoming Test in Galle will be the end of a Test career that will have stretched for 119 appearances. Mathews made his debut in the format in 2009, and has been more-or-less a fixture in the side since.

Sri Lanka's Test schedule is about to dry up, however, and Mathews, who turns 38 next week, would have likely had to have waited until May 2026 to play Tests again.

"The past 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka has been my highest honour and pride," Mathews said. "I have given everything to cricket and cricket has given me everything in return and made me the person I am today.

"Whilst I bid adieu to the Test format, as discussed with selectors I will remain available for selection for the white ball format, if and when my country needs me." With Sri Lanka due to co-host the T20 World Cup with India early in 2026, there is a chance Mathews could be picked for that tournament squad.

Mathews captained Sri Lanka in 34 Tests, including in some of their most famous victories, especially in Headingley in 2014, where his 160 in the second innings turned the match.

As a batter, his career tally of 8167 runs puts him third on Sri Lanka's all-time list, behind Kumar Sangakkara (12, 400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814). He presently has 16 hundreds, and a Test average of 44.62. Mathews has only sporadically bowled in Tests, but he also has 33 wickets in the format.

In his greatest stretch of form, between 2013 and 2015, Mathews scaled peaks rarely reached by Sri Lanka batters, hitting 2378 runs at an average of 59.45 during that period. Almost all those runs came with him batting at No. 5 or No. 6.

While he never matched that level of batting output again, he has nevertheless been a significant contributor in Tests, notably in 2022 and 2023, when he hit 2141 runs (both years put together) at an average of 51.15, though by this stage he had moved up to No. 4. His most-recent Test hundred came against Afghanistan in February 2024.

His career has not been without controversy, particularly around 2017 and 2018, when he had been in a public standoff with then-coach Chandika Hathurusingha. The last few years of his career have been characterised by a greater emphasis on his fitness, after the middle period of his career had been hampered by various leg injuries.

Not surprised at all.

I also wouldn't be surprised if many fixing incidents happen in IPL. :inti
