New Chicken Recipe

As an Indian, I request my Pakistani Brethren to recommend a Pakistani Chicken recipe to me. I have recently found a new love of cooking, and have learnt how to cook some veggie dishes, keema and egg curry and a chicken curry.

But in order to diversify my skills, I am looking for a typical Pakistani (ideally from Karachi) Chicken Recipe.

I highly recommend this youtube channel for you:

Chicken a la Nawaz comes to mind. Chickens stuffed inside a fermented camel carcass, buried under hot desert sands, and then hung out to dry. It's a quintessentially Pakistani speciality.

Try Chicken Do-piaza or Balti Chicken.. both are absolutely awesome.

There's also the Baloch/South Punjab classic, Chicken Surprise. It's so named because it's actually a Houbara bustard.

Let's just say it will liven things up later on.

Is Houbara bustard, an aphrodisiac?

Is Houbara bustard, an aphrodisiac?

Indeed it is. Can you picture anyone more virile than a 90-year old wheelchair-bound prince in diapers who has an operation theater in his aircraft?

One of the top Pakistani chicken is called "Lahori Charga" .... the steam brings in the moistness and tenderness, while frying takes away any game odor from the meat .... you simply can't go wrong with it.

Okay, let me start by asking the following question.

When cooking Biryani, how can I keep the rice fluff and grains separate from each other? Any tips :dav?

While cooking fried rice after frying the rice and cooking it, i refrigerate it for an hour to keep the grains separate. I don't know whether this will work for biriyani. i think it depends on the rice you use also.

Has nothing to do with cooking, but I advise everyone to have warm honey water first thing in the morning. Its been a month now, and I feel better.

Student Noob here. How do I make Biryani? :yk

Is it possible out of the Ingredients I have available at the moment:

Laziza Biryani Masala
Rice
Tomatoes
Green Chillies
Black Pepper
Onions
Chicken

Can't cook at all, but I like to help my Mother with presentation of food thanks to the artist in me. I believe that the taste can be enhanced infinitely if the food look good. :butt

For starters, never use dark coloured tableware.

I can make Lamb Keema, Asian Style Tuna Fish and Daal. I can make Chicken curry and Lamb curry to but they don't always come out right so I guess don't know how to make it properly. Had to adapt at uni :)) still don't really cook that often, at best once per week most of the time stuff myself with loads of carbs

Pizzas, burgers, paratha rolls and sandwiches are the norm here too. Have somehow lost a couple pounds because I've taken up cricket again! I aim to lose at 10 pounds this summer though.

I find going to the gym tiresome. I'd rather involve myself in multiple sports.

:))) I just realised there are instructions behind the Laziza Masala pack, thanks bruv will update you if it goes well LOL

These ready-made biryani masalay are for novices, and they don't taste nearly as good as the real thing.

Damn! I'd have thought you guys eat healthier in pak! In my village of Gujjar Khan everyone is on the Paleo Diet. I love that place because it's so ancient, hasn't made any kind of progress for centurys so when am there it feels like i travel back in time :)) tbh most of pak is like that in the village areas, haven't been there in over a decade i will tour pak when the security improves lol

Yeah I hate gym to, i play in the ecb cricket nets on weekends and do star jumps in my bedroom.

True that but it's okay for a student that don't know how to cook properly :))) asian food in pak is the best though, on another level to everything in the UK

As a student, why go through the pain of making biryani? trying something simple. They are plenty of simply healthy recipes, but yeah they won't taste particularly but neither will your biryani probably. :))

For a novice, it's better to start off with these ready-made masalay. You just have to have the slightest knowledge about cooking and follow the instructions on the pack, and you'll end up with a 6.5-7/10 dish. And that's enough for someone who's living alone and just wants a taste of home without ordering in.

When I was doing my A-levels, I was the biggest slob out there. Basically ate 5 full meals a day, and didn't have much going in the way of activity. That caused my weight to shoot up 10 kgs in the space of two years. Thankfully, university happened then and I made a promise to myself that I would try to get into whatever sport I could.

I'm a jack of all trades and master of cricket, you can say. So ever since university started, I've got back to playing football, cricket, tennis, basketball and tennis, which consumes most of my time so I don't particularly have time for 5 meals a day. My weight has gone down a bit obviously but this summer is where I hope I'll put in a lot of work and get back in proper shape.

Never goes well the first time. Your rice will turn on you. Always. They're the devil.

As a student, Pasta is your best friend when it comes to cooking. You can find the most basic recipes on the web and pasta as a main course is pretty hard to mess up.

5 meals you mean small ones? or big ones LOL I love playing cricket it's better then making love :))) that's what I said to myself when i came back from a session i had after a very long time. That's good way to exercise though doing all those sports you enjoy, i only really enjoy cricket and boxing, i guess i like table tennis and badminton a bit to. Hopefully you do, with weight loss you just have to cut carbs and do loads of exercise but it's easier said then done because we like to eat rotis hard to substitue bread for vegetables

5 big meals.

Breakfast - Omelette with bread
Lunch - 1 roti with saalan or saalan with rice.
2 hours later - Used to hit the nearby biryani outlet EVERYDAY after class with friends. BEST biryani in the world. Had it basically every day for 2 years.
Dinner - whatever's for dinner. Typical desi food.
After-midnight snack - Didn't have the tension of waking up early as I had afternoon classes so basically stayed up all night watching tv shows and what not. Ate a ton of instant noodles.

Are you in Lahore because of uni?

No, my parents and I live in Lahore while my brother works in Karachi. My sister used to live with us but she's married now and moved to Dubai.

We're originally from Karachi though. The reason I know so much about living alone is because I spent a few years alone in the US, and worked my way through middle and high school before coming back to Pakistan.

:))) that's a jobber diet

I need to start making past more often but i hate eating it plain i guess the vegetable one is okay, the chicken one is the best but don't know how to make it

That's a pretty heavy diet. What's your weight?

Weight: 74 kilograms

Height: 5 ft 11 inches

I used to workout in 2009-2011 but only use treadmill these days. Have one at home, can't be bothered to go to gyms any more.

I don't drink soft drinks like Cola, 7 Up, Fanta etc. at all, which helps me keep my weight in check.

why did you return to Pakistan if you don't mind me asking? peeps tend to stay in the US or UK for their career prospects

We had no career prospects because we were on an immigrant visa. We could only work in supermarkets owned by fellow Asians. My brother had a degree which was being wasted because he didn't have a social security number but the need of the hour required us to make money as fast as we could. We were going through a financial slump at the time.

Eventually had to return because of some family issues but can pretty much go back whenever we want now. Got a clean record and a great sponsors.

Used to lift weights few years ago, but it started to affect my golf which is why I only do running now. I'm fit; not mottu or pathlu.

Oh, okay. You work now?

I get up at 6:30 and have coffee when I get to work at around 8:30... I have my first meal at around 12:00 which is usually a sandwich or pasta (something that I can eat without making niwalay :yk). Get home around 6:30 and head to the gym.. I come back around 8 thats when I have my first proper meal.

Keeps me lean and healthy :srt

I see, Glad to see that things are better now. I know people like that who use to work for my uncle but then immigration control got them :))) i don't know how they got in the country tbh anyways i knew a few who were planning on returning to pak, free plane ride i guess win win for them :yk I understand how hard it can be though knowing peeps that come from pak to the UK for study etc some of them are doing really well for themselves which is good.

From experience, nothing is worse for weight than soft drinks and they are very bad for health generally as well. I used to drink Pepsi daily but gave up a few months ago.

For me breakfast could be anything from Omlette paratha to poha (lol) or oats or daliya coupled with one glass of milk.
Lunch is usually dal or rajma with chawal and one sabzi
Dinner again could be anything ranging from simple aloo-gobi and roti to chicken curry and roti to fried fish, noodles and sweet corn.

I'm 5'11 and weigh about 65kg, but yeah my physique sucks coz I don't workout.
Only play cricket with the colony kids for about an hour in the evening.

Man that's responsible for my weight gain, I've bring drinking too many fizzy drinks at uni. Will have to give it up, I think am a fizzy drinks addict :)) sometimes feel like i can't go a day without some pepsi or coke. Did you just give it up like that or made some changes, i think exercising alot can help because then you're more thirsty for water then anything else

I was an addict too and working out/playing sports helps because when you are really thirsty, you prefer water or juice to fizzy drinks. I also started to take them with fast food only instead of having Pepsi with every day normal food like biryani, saalan etc. which I used to. After a while, I gave it up completely and substitute it with fresh juice/water.

Having pizzas and burgers with water/juice doesn't really work well, but I'm getting used to it now.

Next step is to give up fast food altogether.

Good Job dude, it must be really hard to have fast food without fizzy drinks but I guess making small changes one step at a time can help eventually especially during the World Cup! :)) you must have been tempted to have the fizzy drinks during the games perhaps entire bottles after the dreadful performances lmao

True. That's why atleast when I'm at home I try to restrict myself only to one desi meal a day.
I prefer my dinner to be continental, but you always can't get the same thing on a regular basis.
Though the good thing is we use very little oil in our foods at home, so atleast we don't gain weight through that.
