So is Shubman Gill the right guy for the job which Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma couldn't do? 🤔

Shubman Gill shared following thoughts in his maiden press conference as Indian ODI captain:

* "It's the biggest honour to be able to lead your country in the one-day and to be able to lead a side, you know that has done so well, it's immense pride for me, and I hope I'll be able to do great."

* "Hopefully we will be fully ready and win that World Cup"

* "I think we have about 20 ODIs before we play the World Cup and obviously the ultimate goal is the World Cup in South Africa, so everything that we play, and all the players that we play they are going to try their best, and we're going to try our best to be able to have a great season before we get to the World Cup. Hopefully, we will be fully ready when we go to South Africa and win that World Cup."

* "It's difficult to put in words. This state is very special for me. From captaining my IPL team, then getting to know that I”ll be Test captain, I was here and then my first Test at home, leading the side in Ahmedabad, this venue has always been very special for me."

GG and Gill combo may survive if India does well in T20 WC 2026 and Gill does well with Gujrat Titans. But don't know how come he is a superior choice than likes of Pandya, Shreyas Iyer and Axar. Yes, even Axar is a better option than him

Team like India just need right structure. They will steam roll through to end. They did in 2011/ They did in 2015/ did in 2019, did in 2023. Each time they topped the table in their group. They just have these weird collapses in crunch games which due to lack of depth could not handle it. Each time we had different captains.

ODI is different, Gill deserves a slot there and might be good, its the T20 which I don't see us winning under him incase BCCI fires SKY

South Africa or Australia are likely to win it. :inti

I think South Africa may win more ICC events now that they won the WTC.
Pitch Dependent, also its scheduled in October Nov which is different from 2003 which was March ish.

2007 T20wc and 2009 CT was scheduled in Aug-Sept-Oct.. so pitches could be close to that even with it being mostly flat.

South Africa is one place where India does well. 2003 World Cup final, 2007 World Cup win.

Gill is an okay choice for ODIs but I think Shreyas was another good choice if he was made captain... GG knows gill better I think...

But 2009 CT is a bad one, I hated our performance in then not to forget losing to Pak considering we were a very good ODI unit back then,(an year ago we had won CB)

No team plays a lot of ODIs these days. That's why making Shreyas Iyer the captain makes little sense.

As it stands, he's only a one format player -- the format that's played the least, unfortunately.

And his captaincy record is impressive in T20s. Why would that make him an automatic choice as captain in ODIs?

At the moment Gambhir and Gill are doing a good job together so unless things go bad for them int he upcoming series/tournaments, we are likely to see these both as coach and captain for team India at the World Cup 2027.

Effect of ODI wc 2023 loss....in past history no captain or batsman surviewed if they lost ODI wc final. Remembered me as 1996 wc final loss of Australia against srilanka..Mark tailor is eventually retired after that loss.Same case with mahela jayvardane after 2011 wc final lost....

But not rohit Sharma fault as he played well in wc 2023 final ..it was subhmab gill rash shot that makes the downfall of Indian team in that final.

Subhman has got out in that fashion in Asia Cup final too. He hasn't clicked under pressure except in 4th innings at the Gabba in 2021 & 4th test vs England this year. Apart from these two instances his only valuable contribution has been scoring 30 in Champions Trophy 2025 final.

He scored a century in the U19 SF against Pakistan. Pretty much carried the innings there.

And although India lost the game against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup, his lone hand in scoring 121 was awesome.

Also, his scores against England in the Test Series at home. He scored a crucial 50 in the 4th innings.

Agree with you on the under-19 semi but other matches were pressure less, he has a chance to make amends in T20 World Cup semi-final & final if India reach that stage.
